Way over sugared outside and inside, rendering the pastry stiff not flaky and the (milk not dark) chocolate was grainy not smooth due to over sugaring and thinly filled and not very flavorful. We've had a lot of good experiences at Provencal, but this wasn't one of them. Our sandwiches were not made according to the menu. No mayo, not toasted. The ingredients were sparse, the bread is not what I ordered, and it was just ok. Thankfully they returned the charge for one of the sandwiches. But I'd rather it was good. Food is tasty, service is great. Since we found this place, we stop most days and pick up lunch. I always get a roast beef wrap and it never disappoints. I never leave without a cupcake or croissant, it's a bakery after all. I've only been to this location and my only complaint is that there's only one restroom, and they are closed on Tuesday. They specialize in breakfast, lunch, homemade pastries, cakes, cookies, and even prepared foods to take away. I especially love escaping the brunch crowds on a Sunday morning and coming here for a tender and flavorful egg white, cheddar, and spinach omelet made with fresh vegetables and the most perfectly cooked eggs you'll ever have (no burnt omelets here!), or a cup of steaming lentil soup, packed to the gills with beans and ham. Still hungry for more? Save room for dessert favorites, like Hostess cupcakes with chocolate ganache and cream, molasses ginger crinkle cookies, the perfect treat for fall, and a unique and addictive Billionaire Shortbread, which combines silky chocolate and caramel on a crumbly cookie crust. That's the stuff that dreams are made of! You can always expect prompt service with a smile. Everyone that works here is lovely, and because of the distance from the craziness of Newport, seem to be more relaxed than their city counterparts. There's a good vibe here. I was greeted by savory items like soup and shepherd's pie before reaching the bakery case with the desserts I was intending to bring to my hosts in Massachusetts. I would have been happy choosing one of everything in the case but settled on lemon bars and small key lime tarts. Sweet and citrusy, they were a hit and the perfect wrap-up to an early and unseasonably warm October dinner. The muted sage green walls gave the place a peaceful feeling. I loved the 50s cafe tables and chairs dotting the front of the shop. The woman who took care of me was friendly, lovely, and helpful, and within days I recommended it to someone who wanted a nice place to reunite with an old friend. read more

This was the third time I tried ordering an egg sandwich (to go) and the third time in a row that something was done wrong. The first time was a sausage egg & cheese on a grilled bagel. Them: what kind of cheese? Me: cheddar what I got: American. Well ... okay. NBD. Second time: bacon egg and cheese on grilled bagel. As they are about to tell me my order is ready someone realizes it's on toast instead of a grilled bagel and has to remake the sandwich. I had to wait as it took forever and I needed to get to work!! Today: I ordered BEC on grilled everything bagel. They didn't have bagels. I had to ask what they did have. I settle on Grilled Italian bread. I get to work and open my sandwich. The bread looks weird and is stale spongey. I bite into it and it's such a weird texture and sour. A couple bites and I think they gave me bad cheese or something when I realize they gave me spongey sour-dough bread (which in general I do not like). The service is always slow. They act like they've never had customers before and it's always a conversation amongst the workers about what should be routine: how to assemble a box for a to-go pastry, how to make a sandwich, how to add cheese to a sandwich and every little thing is over explained to every customer instead of moving the long line of people quickly and accurately. I had high hopes but they were dashed. Bought a baguette and it felt dry and off. I asked the salesperson if was fresh and she said it was baked that morning. Tough, dry and mediocre at best. Gave them another try, same thing. They don't have the hang of making baguette correctly which is kind of important if you call yourself a French bakery. Fatal flaw, they should get their act together, there are alternatives in Newport area. The pastries are okay, nothing special. I would never recommend Provençal Bakery and Cafe after our first visit and interaction with the owner. My husband went into this establishment today to pick up a loaf of sourdough bread and after seeing the specials on the wall ordered some soup for our 101 year old grandma that recently made the move with us to Newport across country from San Diego. (she loves good soup). My husband made his purchase and as he left, he dropped the soup in the parking lot...he has little to no use of his left hand(he is left handed). For context, my husband recently had a bad injury and almost lost his life. He severed 10 tendons, 2 arteries, a nerve and a half and hit the bone with a broken piece of glass after our move to Newport with the United States Navy. He came back in, placed the split open soup container in the trash can and explained what happened to the two gals behind the register. He asked for more soup and explained this was his fault and he was happy to pay for more. The owner of the company came out of the back as rude as can be! She questioned him dropping the soup and then asked where it was. She actually checked the garbage can and asked why did he not save any of the soup (It was on the parking lot asphalt and he salvaged the container and drenched paper sack with 1 hand). She was incredibly rude even though he only asked for more and said he was happy to pay for it again. Instead of the fresh soup from the back, the sweet girl at the register hustled to give him some from the refrigerator to get him out quickly and even whispered "I really don't want to charge you, but she's making me" while motioning to the kitchen where the owner had stormed off to. After paying for the replacement soup again, he came home and shared the story. I was livid and took the soup back to this establishment and demanded a refund. The owner was just as rude to me and seemed incensed that he had dropped the soup and reiterated her anger that he had not saved any of the soup that had been on the parking lot ground with his 1 working hand! After dropping $11.50 cash on the counter, she exclaimed I was never to return to her business again! This all was completely baffling and almost seemed like a certain scene from a "Seinfeld" episode over soup! I would not recommend Provençal Bakery and Cafe to anyone. read more

The person taking the order was very rude. They were not busy and she seemed to be annoyed by us. When I went to order a coffee and tried to charge it she said there has to be a five dollar minimum on a credit card. Being in the human resource profession I know that is not the rule. While I was eating my sandwich, the staff was talking about me not cool. I will not go back there ever again. The sad thing is the food was very good. First off, the wife and I stopped here for lunch on a weekend for sandwich and soup since the little deli down the road was closed. The shop is really nice and spacious. It looks like two shops that had the dividing wall broken down in the middle. To the left hand side as you come in is a bakery counter with cupcakes and all sorts of breads. To the right is tables, a diner counter, and cash register with a kitchen in the back. The wife and I went to the counter and ordered a bowl of chili, bowl of chicken soup, and one of the speciality sandwiches for the day - the tuna melt panini. The ladies behind the counter were very nice, courteous and brought everything out with a smile as we sat at the end of the counter. So the custom service here was pretty cool for a mom and pop dinner style setting. They serve breakfast, lunch, and have a couple larger entree dishes based on the menu. The problem was the food. The bread was delicious, the food was lacking on any depth of taste. The chicken noodle soup tasted like a watered down chicken broth with very weak flavors of the large chunks of vegetables and chicken. Typically chicken broth has a nice thick flavor to it, if done right. It seemed that this batch was pulled to early from the bones and stock before it got the full flavor. The chili was decent, a heavy amount of ground beef with tomatos and a ton of vegetables. But once again, it seemed as if the soup didn't get any time to have the vegetables meld with the bowl. The good news is that the bowls are huge and are a meal on their own for about $5. So even though the soup is mediocre, the size of the portion is ridiculous. The saving grace for the soup is the slices of bread with them. I believe by the taste they are sour dough and they taste great dipped in the soup. The tuna salad panini had awesome toasted bread. The tuna itself was dry (how do you make dry tuna salad), lacked pepper and salt, and the tomato was definitely not fresh. So the entire point of a tuna melt is to have a nice juicy Tuna salad with melted cheese with a thick juicy tomato. I was treated to no cheese, dry flaky tuna, and a two-day old tomato. I will probably come back here for a loaf of bread since the marble rye for the panini was really good and the bread for the soup worked well. I'll stay far far far away from eating here for lunch or dinner. I'm sure their breakfast is fine since its really hard to screw up over easy eggs... read more

Walked in with the husband for a light lunch after hitting up our favorite coffee joint just down the road. I wasn't that hungry so I got the chicken soup while the husband got the chili and tuna melt. The broth of the chicken soup seemed quite watered down and very lightly seasoned; but I did enjoy the chucks of fresh carrots and celery and chicken in it. I tried some of the chili and it was decent;y seasoned and tasty. The tuna melt was just ok but I did like the bread they used for it (and the bread served with the soups). The food here is reminiscent of a warm summer day. The bread, much like the warm air coming through the door from waters of the Atlantic Ocean, is crisp and fresh. I wholeheartedly doubt that I will ever enter an establishment as good as Provencal. My humble advice; Walk, run, CRAWL if you have to, but make a point to eat at this establishment. Given the choice between winning the lottery and eating the bread from Provencal, Id choose the bread. And If I did win the lottery- Id spend it all at Provencal. I was looking for a cake for my mom's birthday and they went above and beyond! She has high cholesterol and hypertension, so I needed a low fat, low sugar cake to accommodate her special diet, but I still wanted to make her feel special as it was her birthday. I contacted 5 bakeries and Provencal was the only bakery in the Newport area who could make me what I wanted: a low-sugar chocolate angel food cake frosted with whipped cream and decorated with strawberries. They managed to have it ready by today once I had the cake ordered on Wednesday. The best part? I was able to do everything by Facebook messenger! I hate making phone calls and I was contacting so many bakeries, that doing it this way was just great for me. I contacted them on a Tuesday and the order was placed on Wednesday for Friday pickup after several messages back and forth to work out details! The cake came out BEAUTIFULLY! I never expected them to even pipe the whipped cream as roses! I could not believe my eyes when I saw it!!! Here's the best part: my mom loved it! She said it wasn't too sweet which was absolutely perfect! It was also the first angel food cake we've ever had that wasn't gummy. It was light, fluffy, and delicious! Oh, and even better: my husband who adores sweets loved that it was only lightly sweet! Also, 3 days after picking it up, the whipped cream hadn't fallen flat nor had the cake gone dry or gummy! The cake and whipped cream was just as soft, fluffy, and delicious as the day I had picked it up! I can't recommend this place enough!!!! read more

So today was my first time ever trying Provençal, and wow oh wowww........ the food was absolutely spectacular. My server Paige was absolutely the best, absolutely gorgeous just everything about her 10/10. I asked her what would be a good sandwich with roast beef in it and she asked if I have ever had roast beef in a panini before ? And I responded " no I haven't, but wow does that sound magnificent." So I had to try it...... Let me telllllllll you ! This was the best sandwich / panini / work of god I have ever had in my life... perfect amount of mayo, perfect amount of protein, and the panini was cooked to a perfect crisp... not even slightly burnt. It was absolutely phenomenal. I had to know who the chef was... Paige proceeded to tell me this young man's name was Jordan. Well Jordan, koodals to you my dude. You need to go talk to chef Gordon Ramsey or something cause wow.. I am in love, not with the sandwich. But with your ability to piece together a perfect sandwich... thank you Provençal team! You guys rocked it ! Perfect atmosphere for a first date or if you want to have some great food! Be warned food wrapped in plastic is stale and inedible. But they still charge triple the price! Even the pastry is overpriced and totally underwhelming. Dreadful quality and value. Some of their bread is pretty delicious make no mistake about that. Sometimes they have jalapeno breads which I highly recommend. Their sourdough is pretty average in taste as are the french baquettes. The bread is expensive compared to other bakeries. The major problem with this place? Customer service. I've gone into the store and heard employee verbal fighting/swearing. I've waited at the register longer than I should have while someone was on a cellphone. I had placed a special order for pickup once, got home and realized I was missing 2 particular loafs of bread I had paid for. I went back and the owner said he couldn't be sure I really got them in the first place & came back trying to get two free loaves of bread. That REALLY just topped the cake. If you want good bread, this is ONE of the bakeries that has it. But why bother? You'll probably be treated like crap like I was. read more

They do have some good breads, and I don't know many places around that actually make their own - but I agree, the bread is a little expensive. I am willing to pay a little extra though to keep a local artisan in business, so expect to pay $4-5 for a loaf and be prepared for more bread than you probably need! I can't find any bread that's the right size for my girl and I, we usually have half a loaf left over. The breads are good, but as the other Yelper said - sometimes the service leaves a little to be desired. But hey, they're baking bread for almost all the restaurants on the island! read more
