PICO, not surprisingly, is ranked as the number one restaurant for Rockaway on Yelp, a title that is no doubt well deserved. However, outside the confines of a Rockaway list, I'm sure you'll never come across PICO mentioned in any of the top Mexican restaurants for the greater NY area ... which I think is total bs. Sure, seeing as how I'm a native of Rockaway, I can see how my review could be considered biased, but it's not. While PICO isn't your traditional Mexican place, their twist on Mexican food is perfectly executed, and unquestionably delicious. I'm sure if this place was opened in Williamsburg, people would literally be losing their minds over it: countless articles would be typed, lines would be preposterous, some customer would have the logo tatooed on their arm, and Munchies would have already produced a Night Out, YouTube video. As an unrepentant glutton, I've scoured countless lists, proclaiming one restaurant or another, to have the title of "best nachos." A title that I see as tantamount to a Nobel Peace prize. Never have I seen PICO mentioned on said lists, but by all means, go into PICO, order the nachos with brisket, and tell me where you can find better nachos than that. Easily they should be tops of any nacho list, which, in my opinion, is automatic grounds for a 5 star review, but don't worry, the rest of their food is just as good. All of their tacos are good, but the pastrami taco is especially worth noting. Pastrami that could rival some of the top Jewish delis, coupled with coleslaw, and a chipotle mayo sauce, all on a freshly made tortilla. How can you beat that? For dessert, the tres leches cake will not disappoint. I'd say in the last few years I've been to PICO over 20 times, and their consistency is to be applauded. Those wings!!! I can't even describe how incredible they are!! Honey wigs with cumin sauce - so easy so perfect! The only way it can get wrong - if you order small plate. Medium size is great for two, big size is also good for two. Everything else on the menu is also very good. We tried different salads, tacos, burrito - all great choices. Chips and guacamole is also amazing! But those wings are the best!! Probably the best I've ever eaten in my life. And if you don't want to take my word for this, take my BFs word - he thinks the same:) Whenever you are in Rockaway, Pico is a place to go for delicious food and drinks. My friend told me about this place so I had to check it for myself. We started off with some amazing drinks like the spicy margarita with jalapeños,bitters with a sugared rim. Excellent!! Then we ordered nachos which were really good. We had the pulled pork enchiladas and fried calamari for dinner. They were both very good too. The staff are nice and the place has a cozy atmosphere. I go to PICO often - this was the first time for brunch, two weekends ago. As usual, the creative menu selections did not disappoint! The smoked brisket hash had the right amount of ingredients and savory flavors. The portion was plentiful! I tasted the Panko crusted French toast which was the perfect amount of crispy, softness and sweetness. The bananas are a plus. And of course, had to have the amazing guacamole with lump crabmeat! Always a must! The tortilla chips were extra tasty this time around - perhaps a new or some added seasoning?! The right amount of crunch! Can't wait to go back and try something else. Pico is a great addition to Rockaway! The location is great, parking can be a bit rough, but you can find street parking on off nights. The atmosphere is very laid back- there is a full bar with seating, high top tables, long booths that seat about 6-8 people, and regular tables. The menu has all the Mexican favs like tacos, burritos, nachos, salads, and quesadillas just to name a few. I went on a Thursday night around 6:30 with a group of 6 people, it was not crowded at all and my group was seated right away. The waitress was not very friendly- I've heard that's typical behavior for her since the people I was with have had her as a server before so I let it rock. We got down to business and picked some apps starting with pickled carrots and jalapenos and a few different types of wings. Everything was very good I really enjoyed the pickled veggies, super bitter which I loved! For my main, I got the LA burrito with smoked brisket it came with: Frijoles Gordos, & Queso, Yellow Rice, Frijoles Negros, Guacamole, Pico de Gallo & Crema. I was told to get the smoked brisket because that's one thing they do very well. I enjoyed the burrito it's not massive so you can actually finish it with the sides, the brisket was good, but not the best I've had. I came here on busy Friday night .. the wait time for a table of 5 was about 20 mins. We were greeted at the moment we walked in ! The staff here is ridiculously friendly. The restaurant itself has booths in the front along with a bar and another area in the back with tables. We wanted a booth which comfortably sat our party of 5. We started with the chips and guacamole --- amazing ! The guac was so fresh and tasty. I got the burrito and smoked chicken with a side of rice and beans. They were both delicious. My 2 girlfriends and I came here for a brunch around opening time on a Sunday. We ordered an elote-split, 10 chipotle honey wings ($12.00), a nappa cabbage salad with smoked brisket, a taco lunch with brisket tacos (came with rice, black beans, and slaw), and a house salad with chicken. We finished off that delicious meal with bread pudding. The apps were DELICIOUS! The wings are something you must get! They were crispy, perfectly flavorful, and juicy. I would 100% get them again if I come again. The elote was also very good. I had the tacos and the entire meal was great. The rice and beans were perfectly seasoned. My favorite part of the meal was the dessert. The bread pudding was very warm and the vanilla ice cream complimented it very well. The bread pudding had strong cinnamon flavor, so if you don't like cinnamon you may not like it. Overall, my experience here was great. Our server was Melissa. My friend and I came here for lunch on a lovely Saturday afternoon. We sat at the bar and had a few beers, shrimp empanadas and wings. The food is okay, not necessarily authentic Mexican but decent for the neighborhood. The drinks looked great but we didn't get to try them. Jill was our bartender and she was great we really enjoyed her company. However, I will probably never step foot back into this establishment due to a terrible interaction that I witnessed. What seemed to be the manager or the boss I'm not too sure but he definitely worked there and was yelling (literally screaming) at the hostess. Now I may not know what happened between them but literally 5 mins ago we were chatting with the hostess about the Olympics, she was very sweet and we were getting along very well. But to raise your voice at an employee at your establishment in front of your customers, is extremely unprofessional. Burrito (1 smoked chicken & 1 Brisket) and they were both delicious. Enough food to fill you up. We also ordered the Chili seasoned fries which were good. For drinks we had a Sangria and Margaritas. The Sangria was just okay but the Margarita was fantastic. The staff (especially Ben & Chris) were on point and although the place was packed, the service was still friendly and sustained. Although I couldn't give it just a 4 star because I was overwhelming pleased, there is always room for improvement too! House made guacamole is amazing! Their menu selection is eclectic and varied. Smoked brisket burrito was delish. They have a huge selection of tequilas and cocktails. The house margarita on the rocks was lemony and had a nice shot of tequila. Specials included duck enchiladas, pastrami tacos and seafood enchiladas. Although it was packed on a Saturday night, our waitress came by often and refilled our chips and water. A nice ambiance and décor to the back dining room and there is a bar with booths and communal table seating. Wish they had a place like this in Jersey! So for the past two weeks for some reason I haven't been enjoying anything I've eaten to the point of satisfaction that I've wanted. Pico knocked it out of the park. From their brunch menu I had their burger and it was the best burger I've had. It had smoked bacon which is out of this world the best bacon,nice and thick. I don't ever want to see regular bacon in my life again lol. It had cheddar cheese and an egg on it. It was my first time having an egg on a burger. The combination was terrific! Guacamole and salsa were on the side. I put it on my burger also. The burger came with home fries which I didn't need because the burger was perfect alone. We ordered the nacho chips with guac. The chips have a great seasoning on them.The kids tore them up eating two orders. The place is so pretty , I fell in love. In fact, the place smells like smoke. The crab in my enchiladas tasted overly "crabby" as though it was out of the can in a long time. After lounging on the beach all day we were hungry and stumbled upon this gem. The ambiance is welcoming and nice. There are comfortable booths and they were playing really good music. Tacos and guacamole were had and they were excellent. Their house sauces were surprisingly better than the typical red and green sauce I'm used to. Mexican is not my favorite cuisine but this place makes me wanting more. The corn here is yummy 5/5. The guacamole was actually just avocado so it's nothing special and fairly expensive 3/5. I tried the shrimp and brisket tacos, they were good 4/5. My friend and I shared the LA burrito and the chicken was really soft and yummy but the mashed beans inside were too much 4/5. I had a frozen margarita with a splash of sangria, it was good but very sweet 4/5. For dessert we had the dulce de leche cake, I didn't like that it was cold and it was extremely sweet we couldn't take more than a couple bites each 3/5. OMG...this is great Mexican cuisine. Who would think of pastrami on a taco would taste so damn good?!??! I also had their special seared tuna on a corn taco. Absolutely so fresh. And their corn with the chipotle aioli sauce...DELICIOUS For dessert I had their bread pudding...it's not stale bread...its croissant...flaky buttery deliciousness with vanilla ice cream. (Check in on Yelp and you get 50% off a dessert so this a must to get) I like Pico because they put a twist on their food. When you eat here it's not all about cheese and fried dishes...you leave feeling light and not like you are going to fall over.
