Firstly the prices are RIDICULOUSLY HIGH for what it is (Basically a overrated pot pie). You would think it is a walk in restaurant from the outside or in traditional South African "Take-Away" style but it is far from it. Inside looks very dull and depressing, almost like a business that's about to shut down and holding on by a thread or the owner just does not take pride in it or cares. Secondly, how on earth are you pre-order lol? Covid has passed so why are we still pretending to be in a Pandemic mode and high prices to match? I ordered Steak Pie and a Sausage roll. Had to wait over an hour before I could come get it. The filling in the pie seemed watered-down and had a weird smell as if the meat was old and cooked anyway. The sausage roll was very small. I would have got twice as much and better tasting food almost anywhere else. NOT RECOMMENDED. read more

Not familiar with South African cuisine, so I have been wanting to try this place for quite a while! I wanted to grab them frozen so I could order a few and try them slowly. I called the place as suggested by the website, and was guided through patiently what some of the items were, and what to order. Since I ordered the frozen ones, I was able to pick them up right away. Place is easy to find, and there is plenty of parking. They explained how to bake them at home, and I was on my way back home in no time. I ordered 4 savory pies, and one dessert one: Sausage Roll / Chicken and Mushroom / Beef Pasty / PieDog and their Vanilla Custard. I skipped lunch so I decided 2 of the savory ones were in order. I read that some people felt that they were small for the price: I did not think so. I could probably have done with just one honestly. Sausage Roll was amazing! Chicken and Mushroom was very flavorful but to me, the chicken was too dry. And finally, the Vanilla Custard was simply decadent! The custard was creamy, sweet (but not too sweet), and that sprinkle of Cinnamon on top just sealed the deal! If you are in the mood for something new, I highly recommend it! Check their website before ordering (they post the menu of the day). And if you want them baked / served hot, note that you will absolutely need to call ahead and then wait 30-45 min before you can pick them up! Having been raised on Swanson's chicken pot pie, I'm forever on the hunt for something that'll trigger those childhood memories. I know these pack a lot of calories but that's ok, eating an entire pie every now and then, should be fine (that's my non-medical opinion, by the way). Another interesting twist is that the owner is from South Africa, whut?! They make pies too?! Apparently they do. Due to COVID, they're only selling frozen pies for take out, unless you preorder a baked pie for pick up. So we decided on a chicken and beef pie and two smaller dessert pies - blueberry and peach. The instructions suggested that we add an egg wash (for the chicken and beef pies) on the top of the crust, to give it that golden look and that's a big plus. These pies came out beautifully!! I didn't get the same creaminess that I expected for the chicken pie and the beef pie was packed with beef. The dessert pies were fine but I'd probably order the bigger version next time. If I'm ever in the area once more, I'll keep the Pie Boss in mind and will try the other types. read more

I actually found this place on Yelp when I was browsing and looking for new places to try. I used to live in Aurora so it was not a far drive. They have a private parking lot so you don't have to worry about finding parking. Now, for the pies themselves they are not big. I had to eat at least 3 to fill up but they were delicious. I ordered the chicken and mushroom, cheeseburger, and pepper steak. They were well made and require 30-45 mins to cook. Prices have gone up, now it's in the range of like $7-9 something. Stopped by to try out this highly rated restaurant. I discovered everything is carry out and one needs to preorder if you want food to be warm. I decided to buy frozen pies and some desserts to reheat at home.I purchased Spicy chicken pies a Chicken mushroom pie and a Beef Pasty. The Beef Pasty was my favorite. It tasted like my Mom's Pot Roast encased in a delicious crust. The Spicy Chicken was good I like spicy hot so I would have liked a bit more heat. The Chicken Mushroom was too bland for me.The crust on all the pies was amazing. The Deserts were small and tasted okay. I LOVE the pies from Pie Boss. Simply the best and there's nothing else like it! Truth be told, I wasn't sure what I was getting at first as a colleague of mine from New Zealand introduced me the concept of meat pies. (I was only familiar with a chicken pot pie). Everything is made from scratch with quality ingredients. Imagine a delicious meat pie with flavors from South Africa, Africa or India with a buttery, flaky crust. My personal fav is the pepper steak pie. Yes, things have gotten more expensive but you get what you pay for and unlike too many restaurants, they haven't resorted to shrink-flation. I realized last minute that I forgot to order a pie for my dad's birthday and I was able to call up last minute and they were able to accommodate us no problem. When we picked up the pie, it had just come out of the oven and it was a huge hit that afternoon. Thank you for the great product and service! I saw this place was featured on a list of best places in Aurora and while in the area I decided to stop in. I tried the spicy chicken and a cherry desert mini pie. The spicy chicken was not spicy but overall not a bad pie. The cherry tasted like your run of the mill cherry pie filling in a homemade dough that was overly sweet. In the post pandemic ere dine in is no longer offered so you will have to order ahead. If you want to eat immediately 45 mins prior notice is required so that the pie can be baked. Inconvenient if you're looking for a bite while you're out but worth taking back and baking. read more

Having grown up in New Zealand, a British colony, steak pies are a staple, but unfortunately they are non-existent here, or so I thought! Therefore I was super stoked to come across Pie Boss on Instagram randomly and it took me no time to find my way here, especially since they are in my neighborhood! Really tasty pies with a perfectly flaky crust. The pepper steak was great - the meat was very tender. I also enjoyed the chicken mushroom pie. Seating in the restaurant is bare bones but comfortable enough. Turns out you're typically expected to call ahead, as the pies are made to order and take 35 minutes to bake. There are a few pies in the heated case for walk-ins (they try to have more there on Saturdays) so luckily there were still a few options when we arrived at 6 (they close at 7). So this is more of a takeaway place. You can also pick up frozen pies to bake at home. read more

All of the pies were delicious with flaky crust and balanced ingredients. Chatted with the very friendly owner and most of their orders are pre-ordered, either frozen to take home and bake or call ahead for ready to serve. This little shop is turning out some amazing pies. Unfortunately I stopped in the last night I was in town and I regret that because there's at least two previous meals I should have substituted with Pie Boss. As the snow started coming down, huge magical flakes too, I thought it was perfect weather for hot pies from their case to take home to share some of my family. Now out in San Diego I have these South African pies all year round from a place called Perky's but I have to say Pie Boss does it better. The flavor profiles, the amount of moisture in the filling, and the crust are all better at Pie Boss. I didn't order ahead because I was totally fine with just taking them home frozen if the freshly baked in the case were all sold out. Pie Boss includes a little card with baking instructions but I think that their oven gets these pies more magically brown and delicious than my mother's did. The beef pasty was still okay baked at home, just a little paler than the others. It has a delicious filling of beef, potatoes, and carrots. You can't go wrong with a beef stew baked inside a flaky crust. Well you could, but Pie Boss has it worked out. If you're going for visual perfection- order ahead. From the hot case I picked out two pepper steak pies and 1 spicy chicken pie. The pepper steak has always been my favorite South African pie and Pie Boss turns out a perfect one. The crust on these little pot pies isn't soggy (inside or out, not even the bottom where it can be tricky) and it flakes nicely. The spicy chicken, aka chicken curry, has a nice little kick but nothing too crazy and the spices are balanced. Perky's, I'm sad to say, frequently has soggy crust and the chicken curry is overwhelmed by giant shards of bay leaves. I'll think of Pie Boss fondly while I eat less tasty pies here. Unless Ty ships his delightful pies? Well a girl can dream and hope to head back to IL sooner rather than later for more pie. read more

We love Pie Boss and come here frequently, but last few times we have tried to get the frozen pepper steak and they are always out. They are apparently the most popular flavor...perhaps make more of that type! Meanwhile we have gotten a few different ones to try, including a special with buffalo chicken and mozzarella, so we'll see how those compare. ETA: made the others last night. Buffalo chicken was good, not overly spicy but still 2nd place to pepper steak! My mom wished for more mushrooms in her chicken mushroom pie; there weren't many this time. Wow! This gem has amazing pies! My husband and I wanted to try all of them after already splitting four. We met the owner and he is great people - he truly cares about serving the others while also incorporating culture which I find outstanding. You do have to order/call ahead to ensure you get the pies you want, which we did not know at first. Taj owns the spot and has great recommendations, even with their limit menu selection due to covid. But there's still a lot to offer even on the limited menu. **Always go online to look at Today's Menu to see what there is to order, not the full menu.** I also like that even though they stop baking about an hour before closing, they still offer pies to bring home and bake yourself. Hot Diggity Damn! I usually am not into pastries of this sort....I don't like pies in general. I have some fam from Michigan so they're all really into pasties but it's never been my thing. So much crust...ugh. Enter: Pie Boss. Pie Boss does have a lot of crust but...it's just unlike any other I've ever had. I don't mind all the dough and not only that but I think that may just be the best part of their goods. It's flaky in all the right places on the edges, soft & gooey in all the rights places in the middle, just absolutely delicious. I tried a few different specimens to get a good scope and now am dying to go back to try more items. +Sausage Roll $3.49 - This looked like a snack in my carry out box, but after I popped it in the oven, man did the sausage expand with some heat (har har har, too easy). Seriously though, it accounted for an entire lunch for me. It was so good. +Chicken & Mushroom meat pie $5.29 - Holy goodness. I swear I didn't think it could get better after trying the sausage roll but I was wrong. The chicken & mushroom mixture was so insanely good, eloquent words are eluding me from describing the delight properly. +Spinach & Feta vegetarian pie $4.99 - This might have been my favorite of the bunch! It's really so hard to pick because I felt like each was better than the next. Thi s pie, along with the others, was completely packed full of spinach & feta goodness. I absolutely loved it. I *have* to get back to buy some pasties to go to see how they stack up for my fam vs. those from the UP. As everyone said, call 30-35 minutes before going in so they can prepare your pies to eat there. I prefer taking mine frozen. Trust me, they taste just as amazing if you heat them up at home.
