We had a terrible experience! We went after my friends got married. We really should have checked the reviews first. Service was horrible. We were treated as if they didn't want us there. My wife asked for bread and the waiter gave her a smug look. When the waiter brought the bread to the table, he did didn't set it down. He tossed it. Our pastor told him that his food was cold. The waiter was so rude that he shunned him off by throwing his hand in the air. The Bride as for a drink, any rudely told her to go to the bar and get it herself. Yes the menu looked awesome. It had a lot to choose from and that's why the Groom chose it. He felt that it would fit everyone's. needs. we were a party of 14 I'd think you would be happy to have the business. Do you know the way to Ballena Bay? Pier 29 Restaurant is located in Alameda's Ballena Bay. It has an extensive seafood menu, full bar, soups, salads, and some chicken and steak. It has a view of the marina on one side, and a view of San Francisco bay on the other. It's away from the busy downtown traffic, and offers lots of free parking. I was treated to lunch there recently, to celebrate my retirement. For appetizers, we had Shrimp Cocktail and Fried Calamari. All the seafood was fresh. I then ordered the "Fish and Chips Combo" featuring fish and prawns. It consisted of two pieces of fried cod, and two fried prawns. The fish was fresh, and had a nice flavor. The prawns were crispy, and not greasy. There was a generous amount of crispy fries. The coleslaw on the side was dry and bland. Service was good. There were only two servers working, and it seemed the young lady was doing most of the work. But service was attentive, and she checked on our table a few times. Went to pier 29 with friends for lunch last Saturday at general the food was good unfortunately I ordered the old-fashioned chicken fried steak with country sausage gravy. When it arrives, it had some nasty chicken gravy look like Campbell's chicken soup. We have had lunch and dinner here a few times in the past and it's always a hit and miss on the quality and taste of the food. Last night we ordered the clam chowder and my soup did not have any clams a few pieces of potatoes and large chunks of onion. I did not have one piece of clam in my soup. For my main dish, I order the ground round steak, it was OK, but I needed to add a lot of salt and pepper to give it that extra flavor that it was lacking. We ordered a few alcoholic drinks, and they were a little mild on the alcohol. They could've added a little more alcohol to the drinks. The women's restroom looks somewhat clean the stall walls really need to be clean. The stall wall has a lot of fingerprints and look dirty. read more

I'll start with the good: very sweet and friendly servers and bartenders. The fish and chips as well as the Grilled Albacore and Cheese sandwich are the BOMB! The menu has a lot of variety so there is literally something for everyone to pick, no matter their taste buds. Unfortunately, quality of food has gone done in the past few years and, like many other places so I get it, pricing has gone up. Maybe on a warm summer night with sunset views over the bay, this place would be worth the price. But as it were, on a chilly mid-week spring evening, this place felt drafty and lonesome. It's clearly got its regulars, who were all on a non-name-tag first-name basis with the sole waiter/bartender. Cheers to all of them. The meal seemed like upscale theme park fare--an afterthought straight out of the freezer. With the exception of the creamy sauce served over the shrimp and scallops, the food was unremarkable. The seafood was not especially fresh, the steamed vegetables tired and dry. The place wasn't warm to outsiders. The bill was too high for what we got. Much, much better! I see there has been changes to the management, so we thought we'd give them another chance. At first we were to be seated in the larger dining area alone, but we asked to be on the bar side. They accommodated us without issue. To me the bar side is warmer in atmosphere and the Warriors were on the television. Thank you for that. Our server was attentive, friendly and had a great sense of humor. Our first surprise since our last visit, was the bread. Previously it was unappealing plain white bread, but now it is a very nice sourdough. It would have been even better warmed. We then ordered Clam Strips and Clam Chowder as appetizers. They were also much better than our last visit. While really good, the chowder needed more seasoning. We all hit it with S&P and it was great! One of my favorite appetizers was the crab cakes, If I have know they were that good, I would have ordered them as my entree'. We then ordered salad with our entree's. It was fresh and a nice companion to the main dish. I had the Cajun Scallop & Shrimp saute' and enjoyed every bite. My wife had the grilled prawns with garlic butter, also really good. And last, my son ordered the muscles. He said the muscles were good, but that he expected them in a cream sauce, whereas, the sauce was more of a light broth that needed to be doctored. I came here the second time after 12 years. The restaurant didn't have any upgrades. Food was good, lamb shank and pork ribs are tasty. The view is gorgeous but I think there's smell inside and I got bug bites while eating there. Business is slow on Sunday evening. There were only two big groups including us and a couple for the whole evening. Staffs are friendly and polite. This restaurant should have done better in this prime location. I would go here for the views and and ambiance - not so much for the food. They in the past had happy hour specials that made it an incredible value. That was before covid not sure if they still exist. Very nice looking restaurant but it isn't so expensive that you have to leave it for special occasions only. Service and food was good - but not great. One small example is the soup tasted no better than if I opened a can. Sounds so harsh but true. Overall I like the place and if your a tourist you might really enjoy this so much more than some hole in the wall. I do think that food snobs wouldn't like the place at all though. A good bet. Give it a try. See if there are any specials - I usually order that as I feel like more people will order and so it will be fresher. Yelp directed me to Pier 29 on the North side of the island. Awesome ! Situated between the marina and the Bay, it is wonderful. The food was great and service was top notch. Inside is cozy and a bit classy. Prices were very good. They have a wine list as well as a cocktail list in addition to the extensive dining menu. LOL---thought tempted to divert my cravings, I stuck with the fish and chips. Super delicious. I plan to go back soon and try something else. read more

Joined a few family members for lunch. There were other small groups have lunch today as well. Felt very comfortable and inviting. Seated promptly and served water quickly. Their menu is extensive and there is something for everyone. Seafood, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, pork and beef entrees served along with salads and thick rich clam chowder. I chose the Pier 29 Sandwich; a combination of shrimp and crab with cheese, grilled and served with your choice of fries or salad. I chose to add Clam Chowder with was thick and tasty. Service was great! There was a very nice bar upon entering the restaurant and the views of San Francisco were breathtaking. Reasonably priced with parking in front. Will definitely return. read more

I wasn't able to take pictures of our food because we were caught in our conversations, but I can tell you that the location is beautiful. As for the food, it is very much mediocre. I got the lamb shank and it was literally a regular size lamb shank with gravy slapped on it. It was still tender, but very plain taste. I loved my mash potatoes and veggies, they were cooked and made perfectly. My coworker had the pork masala with gravy and mushrooms and she said it was typical. What I should have ordered was the fried shrimp and fries that my boss got because it looked really good and he finished his whole plate - LOL! So my best guess is to get their fried foods which should hit cause how can anything be a miss with fried foods, unless its super soggy with oil. But my boss really enjoyed his fried shrimp and fries. Other than that, this place has been here for awhile, which you can tell with the decoration and the elderly people that are there. Don't get me wrong, I love being around elderly people, but this is most likely their go to spot, cause at lunch at 12pm, I seen a few grandpa's at the bar drinking it up - LOL! It's a really lovely local restaurant with a fantastic view. I went on a Wednesday night. The service is excellent but ... the joint needs a MAJOR upgrade drink menu and interior design wise. The main dishes are the best. My Cajun seafood with rice pillof was tasty. It was flavorful and spicy. However the drinks were too sweet, the tiramisu was also nothing like a real tiramisu (no need for whip cream and chocolate syrup on it!) It felt like someone went to Safeway and BevMo and just made food and drinks mixes without trying to get creative. Sort of like a college or senior home cafeteria . I am giving it a 2 start - instead of 1 star - because the waiter was very nice and remade my drink. Plenty parking is available. I made a reservation here for Mother's Day. However, when we arrived, the host at the front was not very welcoming. Instead of guiding us to our table, she said she would "check" on the table and then waved at us from across the room. We did not receive bread like the other guests and had to wait over 10 minutes for our menus. The calamari and oysters tasted fresh. The shrimp, chicken and sausage in my Ballena Bay Pasta were good but the white sauce was watery. I also observed clusters of ants on the windowsill next to my table, making me question the restaurant's cleanliness. I chose Pier 29 for Mother's Day because I had a pleasant experience there in the past, but it appears that the quality of both their food and service have declined since then. Had the pleasure of sharing time with family on two separate birthday occasions. May 2021 and July 2021, my mother and I celebrated our birthdays here. Great food, great drinks, great times! Dogs allowed on balconies and patios. Bring cupcakes, if you bring your own dessert. We brought two pies, and they cut one pie up into 12 slices or something, instead of two pies into 6 slices each. I think they charged us $2.00 each slice? So we brought a $12 pie in and paid $24 for them to slice it? I thought the point was to save money? Those of you who read my regular reviews know that I rarely give 1 star , so the overall experience had to be pretty awful. I move locations, but my co-worker and I still try to get to lunch. We decided to try this place as we both like the marina atmosphere and the seafood, and thought it might be comparable to Horatios, at least for lunch. (insert red buzzer here) We walked in, and the place was not busy at all, and we were seated fairly promptly. Given the menu and perusing it. The waitstaff didn't have to ask if we needed more time, because it took a while to come back to the table. Order a shrimp melt sandwich, and my co-worker ordered shrimp salad oysters and a cup of clam chowder. We were told the oysters would take about 15 mins. Fine. We ordered our drinks. They came 10 min later, then my colleages clam chower came out. luke warm, thick as all get out, hardly any Ipotatoes and barely any clams. I have a feeling it wasn't made on the premises. And older couple of ladies came maybe 5 mins after us, waited 10 minutes just to get their orders. My sandwich came, and my colleagues shrimp salad. Wow! The sandwich greasely came out looking loney with a lilttle spear pickle. I also got a clam chowder, which was super salty, and not from the seafood. My colleague shrimp salad was bay shrimps, which they didn't mention on the menu, so we thought they might be medium. After 20 mins, we caught a young man waiter, who looked like he really didn't want to be there and inquired about the oysters. The table next to us also asked about their bread. Said he'd go check, came out, said it was coming (no estimate), and no people skills whatsoever (not good for the service industry). This whole experience wasted almost 1.5 of our time. If you are looking for lunch during your week, this is not it. You'll be late back from lunch and not just by 15 min.. The is a no for me.
