We came here for brunch this past weekend. It's down the street from our place so it's very convenient. We got seated right away. I feel like the service was lacking here. We ordered a cup of orange juice and coffee. The server didn't offer cream, didn't offer water and it took a long time for the server to take our orders. I wish they had more vegetarian options like, veggie burgers, tofu scramble or even non-dairy cream. We ordered a mushroom omelette and tuna sandwich. The mushroom was just ok, not much flavor, but the side of potatoes were great. Tuna sandwich w/ a side of potato salad was also mediocre. You have to go up front to pay your bill which os fine, but when we got there, she asked for our table number. She was the one who gave us our seats, we don't know our table number. Every single thing came out either overcooked (burnt toast) or inedible undercooked (asked for well done meat patty, it came back rare. I love how they cut their fruit small for bite-sized pieces of fruit, which is much better for appearance and flavor than typical diner/restaurant large chunks, which force you to cut it yourself, and Marti's fruit is always fresh and sweet. Their home fried potatoes are perfect, cut small and with the right amount of seasoning. Their eggs are cooked nicely, never over cooked. Other cafes, diners, often do eggs badly, but not Marti's. Their pancakes are fluffy and flavorful. Other cafes / diners I've been to had bad pancakes that were chewy. Marti's are done right. Nice fresh squeezed orange juice. Fresh, real flowers on tables. Family-owned and run, the family cooking feels like you're at home. Mama and crew cook well and treat you like family. I used to go to Blue Dot across the street, but now I like Marti's better. It has two rooms to choose from, the main original room and the newer, mellow side room. The floors and tables are nice, clean, and cozy, and it retains its earlier 1980s+ Nordic kitsch decor, with some current Mexican touches added. The restroom is clean and pleasant behind the side room. I came for breakfast this week and stayed for lunch. I liked it so much that I came back the next day for a bigger breakfast. It had a steady flow of customers, but didn't feel crowded. I enjoyed reading my book while eating. I've been pleased in my 2 visits, unlike other cafes and diners in Alameda and elsewhere. I think this is one of the best cozy cafes / diners in Alameda, for nice food, welcoming and personal feel, and relaxed vibe. I'll be back for more! read more

Came here after visiting the blood sucking dept as I had been fasting. Its in the older area of Alameda which probably was more happening when the Navy was still there. Its a quaint place that you can tell is a gathering spot for the retirees. Have a decent menu. I settled on the hungry man 1. Came with two Swedish pancakes (ie crepes) eggs and bacon or sausage. The crepes came out with some jam on the side. I thought it was strawberry and was pleasantly surprised it was lingon berry jam. The pancakes could have been cooked at little more and the color was pale, may the pan need to be a bit hotter. Service was fine, not coming over every 5 mins asking how's the food etc. That alone with increase my tip. Let me enjoy my food. Another plus they have fresh grapefruit. If you juice separates from the pulp, you know its now Tropicana or some other store bought. Nice you want a quiet atmosphere abandoned local feeling place. read more

First time at Marti's Place. It's a hole in the wall serving American breakfast and a good list of Mexican entrees. The ambiance definitely has a mom and pop feel, and we love it since they were simple, no screens, and relatively quiet compared to some other breakfast places on the island where it's loud and screens around which distracts the kids. The overall breakfast food were delicious. Only thing that could use some improvement is the home potatoes as some were just right while some were still hard - needing to cook a little longer. Service was efficient and fast. Great for breakfast or brunch with toddlers who can only stay seated for awhile. Will be back to try other entrees. read more

I have always loved Marti's, one of my all time favorites but the last time we were there it was not a good experience. The restaurant was almost empty and my dad's eggs etc were served cold. The waitress was not attentive at all. Nice but not into her job. My avocado melt was extremely small and the accompanying fruit was minimal. All in all for a very expensive lunch, it just didn't hit the mark. We may try it one more time, everyone has a bad day, but for the prices they are charging it has to be better. read more

Marti's is a sleeper. We met friends here @ 11:30 on a Saturday and there was hardly anyone there. It was so awesome not to stand around waiting for breakfast. My husband's avocado omelette was gorgeous, delicious, and perfectly cooked (I worked at a diner/breakfast joint a long time ago... I recognize perfect omelette). My friend had a breakfast burrito with crispy bacon, salsa inside and on the side. It was monstrous and delicious (she took 2/3 home). My breakfast sandwich A (a Monte Cristo-esque sandwich with grilled pineapple) was fantastic as were the potatoes. Our kiddos shared a waffle with berries and a side of fruit. Very cute place, perfect for breakfast. My friend and I split the Stockholm Swedish pancake and the equivalent of the Monte Cristo sandwich. So delicious! I order a standard BLT, and received soggy bread covered in mayo, burnt bacon that immediately tasted bad, alongside non seasonal fruit that tasted sour and old. I was very disappointed. I always love coming here as it is very hometown and plain old generous servings of food and good coffee and service. They have a menu of different types of breakfasts choices. However this is the place for Swedish pancakes. I always order the # 1 Hungry Swede to include 2 Swedish pancakes, 2 eggs, choice of sausage or crispy bacon. My partner and I were impressed with Marti's place.. a downhome atmosphere... cute eclectic art on the wall, very friendly people especially Elena, and Alfredo the bus boy. Another patron who was eating flagged down wait staff and asked if they could help them with their Samsung phone which they did. That is what made this place so special. The people working there genuinely cared to be of service. Food highlights: juice was fresh and delicious. Would order this again. OK, so my prior review stated that the coffee was bad. And, OH BOY am I glad to report that under the current (and lovely) ownership, they coffee is now delish! The new crew has really tried (and succeeded) in honoring the menu of the original owners, while adding new options. And, because the new owners were the prior owner's chefs, the food is just as yummy. There are few places that know your face and preferences. My husband no longer has to tell the waitstaff to "torch" his eggs (I question my decision to marry him almost every time they bring those burnt nuggets of eggs to the table...but I digress) and they know that "extra crispy" bacon to me is bacon that they typically would refrain from serving because it was beyond bacon-recognition. The waitstaff are wonderful, the food is sublime and now, even the coffee is great! read more

I'm an Alameda native but just started going here. I really cheated myself. The Spanish omelette is my FAVORITE. The home fries are super tasty, rustic cut and fresh not frozen. My boyfriend likes their blintzes. It's not silent, but definitely not as loud as Buttercup or Ole's. Sometimes I don't want that in the morning. Everyone here is friendly and the servers check in on you. The best thing about this place that separates them above everyone is how clean their condiment tops are. I included a picture. This was my second time coming here with my mom, the first time was good and we decided to come back again since all the other places were packed. The food is average with all the other breakfast/brunch places in town, but I will say the portions are a bit smaller for the same prices around town. I ordered a breakfast burrito while my mom ordered their salmon omelette. I added spinach to my burrito seeing as it didn't come with any sort of vegetable (which is fine), but when it came to the bill, it was an additional $4 for a small amount of spinach. Normally when i ask for some sort of vegetable as an add on it's $1-2, so $4 is kind of outrageous... if it was additional meat that price would be more appropriate. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences my husband and I have had in recent past. The food quality is scary low. Word to the wise: if you come here, BYOS (bring your own syrup). We came in on a weekend for brunch, and it was almost entirely empty, which is a red flag for Alameda brunch spots. The prices are insane. I ordered an avocado omelette, which was small, came with a very small portion of home fries, and contained a glob of sour cream, some Swiss cheese, and about four thin slices of avocado (I'd guess it's a quarter of an avocado at most), and that was $19! My husband ordered a burger and then we also shared a short stack of pancakes and our check was $70. If the food had been good and/or generous portions, maybe that could be overlooked, but the portions were tiny, and the food was absolutely awful. Everything had this weird smell. It honestly makes me cringe to think back at it because the smell was really unsettling, like it was giving human flesh or something. I don't know why I'm saying that because I've never smelled a dead body, but for some reason, I just think that's what it would smell like. When I noticed it, I was trying to figure out if it was my husband's burger, the pancakes or my omelette. And then I realized that all of them smelled like it. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to spoil his appetite, but on the ride home, we both unleashed about how bad everything was and I don't remember if it was he or I who brought up the smell, but we both had noticed it on everything. I asked for my home fries extra crispy and they certainly were not. His burger was spongy, bland and just so weird. It didn't seem like beef whatsoever... Like a McDonald's patty tasted more like beef than whatever this thing was. Everything was super bland. The pancakes had virtually no taste. Even my raisin toast was bland (and cold and burnt yet somehow still soggy). I asked for jam for my toast and they brought me a virtually empty store-bought jar of jam that had this little spoon in it. It was so unhygienic, that after I spread a little bit on my toast and thought about how unhygienic it was, I couldn't keep eating my toast. My husband asked for more jam because the jar was literally empty, and he was hoping they would bring us a fresh one, but they did not. The weirdest part about everything was the syrup. It was extremely clear that they water it down, no question about that, but we wondered whether the original product was actually even maple syrup. The color is really light and the consistency is so thin that it doesn't stay on anything. My guess is that they are using the absolute lowest quality pancake syrup available and then diluting it 50% water. It was just so clear that they were using the lowest quality food possible and trying to save money wherever they could, that it was downright unsettling. It seems like a humble mom n pop establishment, so I hate to tear it a new one like this, but I honestly question the food safety there and I have to be honest about that... how can a small omelet with cheese and a couple shavings of avocado cost $19? I get egg prices have gone up, but that's insane. And watering down pancake syrup? How much money are they saving by doing that, at the expense of their customers? read more

My first time back since it reopened. My husband and I split a meal with a side of extra toast and two cups of coffee. We had finished our meal and asked for a refill at 1:55, the place closes at 2:00. The server emptied the dregs of the pot of coffee into my cup and told my husband they were out of coffee, he could have decaf.
