So first of all, we ended up here for a friends birthday only because Salt was closed due to staff flu outbreak. It wasn't our first choice. Honestly, my mind is blown that such an expensive restaurant, billing itself as "fresh caught", can be so poor. If you've never eaten at a nice seafood place, you may be happy here. Otherwise, save your money & go to Oceanaire or Salt or heck, St Elmos. Seafood options are very limited & steakhouse style menu means your $40 fish comes with no sides ($9-12 for those) The oysters were decent, but the "horseradish Ice" is just a cheap way for them to stretch their horseradish longer. The seafood options are beyond generic, and multiple options are just covered in cheap ballpark cheese (what?) I got the Ahi Tuna, which was poorly presented & lacked any culinary imagination in preparation - I also got the Truffle Risotto, which was NOT made with the correct rice, not the correct consistency (big & chunky), not creamy...honestly it was cheap white rice & poorly made at that. It was $9 for something that cost *maybe* $0.20 to make. Our group also tries the poutine (French fries with a minimal amount of crab & cheap cheese), the crab beignets (the best appetizer flavor wise, but small), the seafood tower (overwhelmingly mussels), the bang shrimp (decent but you get 6 & the rest of the bowl is filler), and lobster Mac & cheese (the worst I've ever had anywhere...tastes like they mixed their cheese with a lot of flour) My husband got the burger & even that wasn't great - although it was better than the other items) and the "chips" it came with were bland. The salmon a friend ordered was horribly overcooked. The scallops were the highlight of the menu, but even they weren't cooked properly. Their cocktail menu options, of which our group tried several, were basically undrinkable. As a bartender with experience in fast paced & high end dining for years...this part was just clearly created by someone with no knowledge of mixology. The decor feels like a sports bar, which is also odd. On top of that, the restaurant claims to validate parking for $5 on their website. First of all, this is a complicated process to begin with (bring your ticket, get a stamp, go next door to hotel to get a different card, etc) We got our asses chewed by the valet because apparently it was our fault that the waitress did the process wrong, and only the valet option gets validated. In short, for 2 glasses of cheap wine, an appetizer, a burger + side, and tuna + side we spent $180. There are dozens & dozens of places in this city where you could get a MUCH BETTER MEAL for the same $$ or less. We started with oysters and shrimp, moved to hot lobster roll and lobster tail and finished up with their signature bananna churro. Phenomenal Restaurant! Incredible celebration of two family members birthday was outstanding! The appetizers we shared were excellent and the seafood entrees that we ordered were delicious! Other family members had steaks and raved! Even though it's Pier 48, they had a great selection of Midwestern Beef! We also shared deserts between our family and the bread pudding and cheesecake were my absolute favorites that I've ever eaten anywhere! Great to have fresh flown from Boston seafood in Indy! Really disappointing experience. Made reservations, arrived on time and was seated. No one approached the table for over 10 minutes, even though we were only one of probably 5 occupied tables There were multiple servers around, all avoiding eye contact with us. (We made the reservation after a rush period, so I suspect no one wanted to pick up another table.) Hostess finally approached us and found a server for us. When the server arrived, she informed us that we could not order off the normal menu; our only option was a buffet at $55 per person (excluding mimosas, it was noted.) My party decided not to stay, and informed the server. We also spoke to the hostess on our exit, and she stated that they're "really not open yet" for lunch, but just offer this overpriced buffet (assumedly to gouge people attending Colts' games.) I would have just left it as a lesson learned, but then this restaurant reported me to OpenTable for not showing up to my reservation. What?!? Really poor form on all fronts, Pier 48. As a newer restaurant, this is not how you want to treat potential customers. read more

A week ago tonight was the "grand opening" and tonight was my very disappointing birthday dinner. This restaurant has so much need to grow and improve before the Pacers season starts. Poor service. Incredibly slow kitchen which leads me to believe the server didn't put our order in. Fresh flown in seafood would have been worth the price, if the food had been delivered promptly. Instead small servings with crappy, cold fries are what we got, even with manager intervention. While trying to "fix" our issues, the manager asked several times if we would like our bill now. Just because you gave us a "dine and dash" experience...you insult us by assuming that is what we would do. Taking off the Caesar salad because there was a hair in it was a start, but overall, this restaurant did not live up to the positive article in the Sunday Star. Too big, too fast??? Watch out metro Indy and stick to St. Elmo, Harry and Izzy's or Burger Study. read more

My daughter and I went here to celebrate my birthday. The restaurant personally called me before my arrival to see if I wanted to change my request from sitting outside to inside. Once I arrived, there was a sign welcoming me for my birthday at the hostess desk! They then placed it on my table when we were seated. Nice touch! Once we were seated, our waitress Tish, came over immediately to take our drink orders and offer suggestions. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. The chef pairs interesting ingredients in each dish to have them compliment one another. We ordered Boom Boom shrimp, an appetizer, TWICE! When our meals arrived the hostess came over to take our photo and then presented it to me at the end of the night in a nice frame. Dessert came and it was Tiramisu. Amazing as well! We visited Pier 48 over the weekend for the first time. We first heard about it last year and had been looking forward to trying it out since we both love seafood. As we walked in, we were surprised to find that it's a very casual restaurant. Our server was nice. We ordered the char-grilled oysters, the scallops and lobster roll. The lobster roll is not what you would typically expect - it comes in what appears to be white bread that is rolled around the small amount of lobster (not hot dog roll) along with A LOT of French fries.It was decent but I wish it included more lobster. The scallop dish was good as were the char grilled oyster. The prices for both food and cocktails (one drink was $20) would be more adequate at a restaurant that felt more upscale in terms of decor/ambiance. read more

The lobster roll is fabulous!! I can't say the same for the fries. Don't like coated fries, they need to go back to the original ones they had a few months back. The drinks are weak and watery. We went with a few friends so we were able to sample other dishes. The salmon was extremely tasteless. The lobster nachos were great the first time we came but were horrible the second visit-- they forgot several ingredients. The best item I've had was the lobster roll and it's reasonably priced compared to the restaurants new rival Slapfish. However I would definitely substitute the fries for something else. read more

Dang, that Hot Lobster Roll was tasty! The meat, while tasty and of good quality, was not as chunky or as whole as compared to the 2 places in Fishers known for lobster rolls; but there was plenty of meat stuffed in there - very satisfying and more than meets the eye. Good oysters, too. The Naked Cowboy and the Delaware were our favorites of the 6 types they had (they were out of the Orchard Point). The burger, while it still tasted good, was closer to medium well or even well done than medium rare. "Logan M" was a great server! The restaurant's feel and vibe were fine, no pros or cons to speak of; but the parking situation was lame. "Self Parking in the Hyatt garage is also available for $5 (for up to 3 hours)." Yeah, right! We found that the sign outside the Hyatt parking structure claimed $12 for 3 hours. Could we have safely backed out into traffic and then found something else? Maybe. Whatever... we were already there. When leaving after just under 2 hours and 15 minutes (over 45 minutes less than 3 hours), that stupid automated gate thing tried to charge us $40! Luckily, a valet running by heard our outburst (he probably sensed my destructive tendencies towards stupid automated things such as this and previously noticed us wandering the Hyatt as we tried to find Pier 48) and helped us out. Maybe he just didn't want to get stuck behind us when he tries to do his job bringing vehicles to his valet customers as we block everyone else exiting this stupid parking structure out of protest (and as I likely break things trying to draw attention to the authorities of this bait-and-switch or false advertising or whatever tactics), but I wish we had thought to tip him before he ran off. My husband and I dined here last night and we came away underwhelmed. The atmosphere is cold and very noisy. Service is just OK. The food is nothing memorable. My husband had a burger and it comes with just cheese and a few fries. I had the fish and chips. The piece of fish was large because of all the breading. Given the rating it has on Yelp, we were very disappointed. The lobster nachos were fine, but we ordered the scallops and lobster risotto and the risotto managed to be too bland and too salty at the same time. Lobster was cooked like a meat you just throw into a dish for sustenance and not flavor. Our server was nice and she let me replace the risotto since I couldn't really eat it, but I don't think there was anything better waiting on the menu. I replaced it with fried oysters, which were really salty and overseasoned, but I "rinsed" the flavor off to enjoy just the oyster, which would have been better served raw and unflavored. I also ordered their Manhattan with the good bourbon (and so was the priciest), but it was watery and the cocktail was worse than bourbon straight. The final bill was that of a fine dining place at little over $100 for two people, but for the quality of the meal, it was worth maybe $50, and even at that price I would have passed. Stomach also felt weird into the next day. I didn't want to be dissatisfied because we were having such a nice day, but we came out of this meal feeling kind of sad. read more

I am sure this place will do very well given its location. The space is quite nicely done, some effort and some money was spent. But what exactly is it? Not a bar and not a pub and not a fine dining restaurant.....not a seafood joint... not much of anything really. First, a small issue. A restaurant with no prices on the menu is so old fashioned. A market priced dish could be penciled in....but it seemed the whole menu was a blank...even the cocktails. There used to be a thing called a "Ladies Menu", printed without prices under the assumption that the man would always pay the check and a lady should not be concerned. The world has moved on, but not Pier 48. So next,...loud. Very very loud. Almost too loud to talk without shouting. We were there last Sunday evening, the place was nearly empty, but the music volume was turned up full blast. A discreet suggestion to our server that the music might be lowered a bit yielded a snicker. Making their few patrons comfortable .....that is not how they do things. So,...the food. OK. Just OK. All the hype and promotion about the fresh perfection of the seafood is just that, hype and promotion. Our table shared several appetizers, stuffed calamari and octopus and meatballs....all just ok. Our group of five ordered drinks...including a spectacularly expensive Manhattan....all just ok. Our entrees ranged from a lobster roll to a complete plated dinner...again all ok. Just ok. Each preparation did its best to mask the flavor of the seafood rather than enhance or reveal it. Sad. Which brings us back to 'what is this place'? It is most definitely not a great seafood restaurant, nor is it a sports bar, or a date night place, or a family gathering spot. Every restaurant probably goes through some growing pains, hence some earlier negative reviews. BUT we couldn't have been more satisfied. Our server, Deon, was excited to tell us about their history and proud of how fresh their seafood is. He was very attentive and we enjoyed him very much. We shared a Caesar Salad and it was one of the best we've had. I had the Ahi Tuna, which was grilled to perfection, accompanied by fresh shredded cabbage and seaweed salad. The sauces atop the tuna were exceptional and just the right amount. My husband had the blackened monkfish and said it was the best blackened seafood he had ever eaten. We shared the bread pudding and the bourbon sauce is the best. In addition to owning their own fishing boats, they brew (or whatever you call it) their own bourbon. It was amazingly good! Pier 48 deserves to be on the top 10 list in Indianapolis! Also convenient that's it's across the street from Bankers Life! read more
