Went to dinner on Friday night at 5:30. There were 4 of us. Took 15 min to to even be acknowledged. The crab Appetizers were very good . The four of us all had different dinners and all agreed that they were some of the most expensive and tasteless dinners we have had. We had a Manhattan cocktail that ended up being $20!! My husband and I were looking forward to trying this place, so when friends invited us out for dinner, we chose this spot. First thing to note is that parking can be a hassle. You need to either luck into finding street parking, or pay for garage parking. Secondly, if there is a Pacers game, Pier 48 has a limited menu. That was disappointing to find out, especially since I wanted to try the crab beignets, but they were not offered since the Pacers played the night we dined there. Nonetheless, the food items we tried were very good. Starting with an appetizer of raw oysters, these were some of the finest I've tried. Next, I got the chop chop salad while my husband enjoyed a bowl of clam chowder. The salad was quite tasty and unique - those drop peppers really add great flavor! The bite of clam chowder I tried was good, but I've had better. At this point, we were getting full, so we split the entree of diver scallops with truffle risotto. This was very good too, and pretty rich. Our server, Ben, was very attentive and added his personal recommendations, which were appreciated. So much potential. So many errors. As a restaurant professional, I was so excited based upon a review in the Indianapolis Star to check out this new experience. Instead we left disappointed and frankly, as a manager I am really surprised at the lack of willingness to address and fix issues we experienced and brought to the server, hostess and GM attention, with only blame and excuses and really no resolution for issues, unlike the protocols in place at other fine dining establishments. Slow and inattentive service. So so food. Way over priced. Shrimp pot was yummy. Perhaps apps like the shrimp pot and some beer are the way to go until the kinks get worked out. For me, this place was just a bit underwhelming. I was so excited to hear about it when it opened. Fresh seafood in Indiana made by folks that have lived and fished on the east coast whose own boats supply the restaurant? Um, yes please! Well, it kinda felt like an expectation vs reality kind of thing. Watching them make lobster rolls on instagram, I was drooling on my phone. Go there in person, and the reality was about half of the size. I think there needs to be better quality control because everyone who ordered at our table said the lobster roll was more like a lobster slider, half the size of a hot dog bun, and half the size that you see on instagram. Several folks at our table said their soup wasn't hot either. I don't know, maybe we just came on a bad day? Maybe the recent weather and cold affected the shipment from the coast and they were running out of lobster hence the smaller lobster rolls. I don't know. All I know is that I've had lobster rolls in both Connecticut, New York, Boston, and San Francisco and this was the tiniest lobster roll I've ever seen. Before I start a rant let me say I have been in the service industry for over 20 years. I understand being short staffed, being out of items and being slammed with an unpredictable crowd. In saying that, I personally have always operated under ONE simple rule - keep your customers informed and don't allow them to sit and watch and wonder what is going on. We waited 10+ minutes to be greeted. Once greeted, we put a drink order and an app order in. We waited 40+ mins for drinks to arrive. I will say the bartender was working and the servers were all running around BUT no one said "hey sorry we are behind" or "hey are you guys doing ok, I see you don't have anything to drink?" Our server, although friendly, lied and said our food was about to come out - another 15+ minutes later, still no app. We ended up asking for a manager and cancelled our dinner order. No manager ever came over. Hostesses seemed clueless. Servers seemed annoyed. The martini we ordered came in a rocks glass. I can't understand what the issue actually was but we won't return. read more

I had friends in from out of town and wanted them to try out Pier 48. We wanted to get it to go but was informed you don't do carry out today. We wanted to get it as carry out so we could avoid the crowds. The lady on the phone said they weren't offering take out yet I can order online and it is not posted anywhere on your website or Facebook page. The girl we talked to was VERY rude and didn't seem to care at all and then blamed her kitchen staff. Not sure if I l really want to eat here if this is how your staff acts. read more

Slow service and they weren't even busy... our dinner took over 2 hours and we had a few issues... 2 people asked for fries with there lobster rolls and then it came out with chips... instead of accepting the problem and getting the fries Ben just show us how he had put it in right but the kitchen had messed up... but never fixed the problem or brought fries... also we asked for a cup of ice it took asking 3 people to get it. I could see going for drinks and appetizers but that's it! Wish this could have been a good experience as we live less that 1/2 away. read more

Mediocre at best. We truly had high hopes from the reviews but were disappointed. When we got the menu I was looking for the oysters that is in their name. The only had grilled oysters. Found out that the do not have their fresh oysters on the menu. We were not offered any from our server. Had a drink special. They charged more than what was one the menu. Then my drink comes and I have a pretty decent size chip in my glass. When I noticed I was concerned that there might be glass in the bottom. Server said definitely not because he saw that exact same one yesterday. Didn't offer a replacement at all - so I drank is but more very carefully. Was worried about finishing the rest. Btw charged more for drink than the menu said. Calamari was just ok - but I expected more because it was a seafood restaurant. Got the lobster roll. It was good but it was served with room temp cole slaw - yuck. Server said it shouldn't have been like that but once again nothing was done. Other meals at the table were just ok. I came one time last year with my mom. We waiting 1/2 hour past our reservation time and the food and service were not that great but I thought I might give it another try. Took my family a few nights ago ordered drinks that took well over a half hour to get. The server acted like she was scared to come out into the floor. Other guests were getting up and leaving without their food or drinks. We stuck it out for an hour and a half before finally feeling like we were not going to get the food we ordered. The server went to go get the manager ( we could see her talking to him) he threw his hands up and waived her away. He never came to our table. I understand being busy and short staffed if that's the case but there will never be an excuse in my book for a manager refusing to even talk to you. Seafood in the Midwest can be a hard sell. Usually your choices are ultra fancy like Oceanaire or sloppy raccour value conscious crab in a bag like Juicy. Pier 48 is not really either. It's a brightly lit coolly tiled space with lots of clean hard surfaces. There are no cozy corners but there is large party space with a huge tall table and big screen TV. The menu had what you would expect in a seafood place: a scallop dish, lobster and some landlubber chicken and steak. Nothing stood out to us, and prices were too steep for us just to pick whatever. We got a stuffed calamari appetizer which had a bit of heat in the stuffing and was quite delicious. I'm bit sure what I expected from the oyster shooter, but a large shot of vodka with a oyster at the bottom and hit sauce was not it . I could be totally wrong on that one. We also got a dozen raw oysters. They were served with traditional topping of horseradish and cocktail sauce but in ice form. Clever but I think most people want the real thing so maybe send both? Disappointingly the oysters had been drained of their liquor, which may be a Midwest thing, and did not have a strong taste, which also may be be that. A great location for pre-gaming. read more

Went for the devour menu and was very pleased. After reading previous reviews I was skeptical of the lobster roll and overall experience however both far exceeded expectations and this will now become a regular spot. Roll was completely packed with lobster and the chowder was very good and filling. Excited to try other menu items. read more

Fantastic meal and even better service! I have a shellfish allergy and wasn't all that comfortable with eating here with the family at first. Our server, Reid, was a pro and took great care with our order. The kids even got extra cherries in their Shirley Temples. The monkfish was phenomenal and is a great substitute for shellfish. WOW! That's all I can manage to say with my mouth stuffed full of this delicious food! The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting with indoor and outdoor seating to choose from. What really set it over the top though was our excellent server Evan! Be sure to ask for him next time you come in for a great chat and better recommendations about Indianapolis's local life! This was my first visit to Pier 48, and the experience was amazing. The atmosphere was very pleasing, and the food was excellent. I ordered off the "Devour Indy" menu and had the Bourbon Glazed Salmon with roasted potatoes and broccoli. Everything was delicious. The chocolate mousse dessert was amazing. Our server, Cameron, was extremely attentive, efficient and very personable. Parking at the hotel next door was only $5 with a voucher from the restaurant. An overall wonderful evening! read more

I was so excited to have dinner here! The pictures of the place looked great and the menu was enticing. We were greeted by a yawn from the hostess and seated at a dark table. We have been coming here since this place opened and it has always been good food and service. Today (Mother's Day) was the exception. To say the service was bad would be an understatement. Had an extremely rude and argumentative server (Jennifer) and then on top of that the food was even below average. Very very disappointing as we have always loved this place. I will say the manager on duty was very apologetic (yes I was a Karen and asked to see the manager but it truly was that bad). Just a massive amount of little things went wrong on todays visit and then to add a rude argumentative waitress on top was the real icing. I feel like I have been misled by the Yelpverse. I don't understand the reviews. Maybe it was an off night? The hostess was super friendly. The server could not be bothered to explain the drinks to me. Some of the drinks don't have descriptions so I asked what a couple were. He either didn't know or didn't want to explain. We got oysters and they had good flavor, but there was some shell in mine. Also, they were teeny tiny. I ordered the blackened monkfish and it was okay. The polenta was the star of the dish. The crawfish etoufee was meh. The crawfish had a muddy, fishy taste. I left a lot of monkfish and picked the crawfish out. The clam chowder was good though. My hubs had the cold lobster roll and he said it was good but it didn't blow his mind. Our server was also taking care of a birthday party and they were so loud. We spotted a manager, but he left and we spotted some owners who were obviously friends with the loud party. I think for the prices we just expected better service and better food. It stinks because it was my 40th birthday dinner and I felt wishing I would have just stayed home. We definitely will not be back. read more

First visited Pier 48 in October 2019 shortly after it opened and it was a very good experience. Great waiters and the food was superb. (From the East Coast. We know seafood.) This visit was the Polar Opposite. (I know. Covid. Hard to find good employees, chain supply issues, limited offerings, etc. ) Our waiter was so underprepared we felt sorry for him. Didn't know alcohol or the menu. Couldn't answer basic questions. Couldn't pronounce words on the menu. And he was incredibly slow, hampered by having to key the order into something the size of an iPhone. (I must say he was very nice.) We ordered appetizers (oysters), drinks, and entrees. My husband's soup and entree came out first. Then salads. Then another main dish. Then the oysters, which were not the ones we ordered and were poorly shucked- think bits of shell scattered throughout the oysters. The martinis were not what was ordered. Nor was the wine. The food was adequate, at best. Honestly we hope this was the exception rather than the rule otherwise this restaurant won't be in business in 6 months. read more

We are visiting from California and enjoy our seafood so we chose this place and for a newly opened restaurant we were very pleased. Beer was good and the scallops were to die for. Carl was great. Very attentive and informative about all items on the menu. We had mostly appetizers and everything was good with good flavor. Oyster from Fanny Bay would of been great on the menu. Good size oysters, not too big or too small. We finished night with the bread pudding which was a 4 out of 5. Overall experience for a new restaurant was great.
