Stopped by Pine State Biscuits and ordered the Moneyball, which is biscuits and gravy topped with an over easy egg. It definitely delivered. The biscuit was fluffy with just the right amount of crumble, and the gravy was rich and savory without feeling too heavy. Once you break the egg and let the yolk mix into everything, it really brings the whole dish together. My date ordered the chicken fried steak plate and was very happy with it. The steak was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and the portion size was generous. It is an order at the counter and then find a seat setup, which keeps things casual and efficient. The staff was friendly and welcoming, even though it seems like it can get really busy during peak times. The ambiance feels laid back and comfortable, classic Portland brunch vibes. Prices felt fair for the quality and portion sizes. I gave it 4 stars and would definitely go back. read more

I usually order the Biscuit with Shitake Mushroom Gravy (5 stars). It is the best mushroom gravy I've ever had. The delicious biscuit does not get entirely lost under the thick blanket of gravy. The golden crust created a barrier that maintained the fluffy interior. I also liked The Reggie (4 stars) biscuit sandwich that included good fried chicken, gravy, cheese, and bacon. I liked how crispy the Hash Browns (3 stars) were, but it was very greasy. My husband likes the BBQ Biscuit. My son either gets the Biscuit (5 stars) or the Blueberry Cornmeal Pancake (4 stars). The S'mores Pop Tart (4 stars) was a sweet contrast to my savory brunch dish. I also liked the strong Mocha Cold Brew (4 stars) with oat milk. The service has been consistently 4 stars. They're friendly when you order and when they bring your order. The wait for the food isn't too long. My family and I enjoy our meal every time. read more

Pine State is an awesome breakfast (or lunch) spot)! We swung in around 11:00am and there was plenty of seating. The team member at the register was super friendly and helpful. We ordered and I got a cup for coffee. There were two coffee choices, I went with one that had a hint of chocolate flavor. It was perfect. Our food hit the table way faster than expected. The Reggie Deluxe was way bigger than I was expecting. The biscuit was nice and dense, perfect for a sandwich. The piece of chicken was massive and the egg was cooked beautifully. The flavors were balanced well! The beignets were next level. They were firmer than I've had before, which worked perfectly in the caramel sauce. I'm pretty sure the awesome flavor triggered some core memories of pull apart biscuits I had as a kid. Great food, great service! read more

I remember enjoying Pine State Biscuits on my first trip to Portland so I asked my friends to go here for my most recent trip. We were all worried the food would be too heavy so we went in with low expectations, and we were all pleasantly surprised. It wasn't too heavy at all! Got the Reggie Deluxe and also tried my friend's hash browns that were the perfect texture and seasoned perfectly. The Reggie Deluxe was delicious. I wish I got extra gravy, I ran out right at the end but overall the ratio was decent. You order first then sit. No seats available inside on the cold fall Sunday we went so we huddled outside in the heater, but the staff helped us put together a table inside and grabbed us once the table was ready. I had seen lots of reviews about vegan biscuits and gravy, and I think that was on the menu previously, but I confirmed in person with their allergy binder that they are not vegan. The only vegan items currently are hashbrowns and the vegan sausage. Very good coffee! Fast service. Casual spot with outdoor seating. read more

5/5! Fresh biscuits for sandwiches. For veggie reggie I was skeptical about veggie sausage and veggie bacon but it was quite tasty. Mushroom gravy was bomb; it gave me a thanksgiving feel. Hash up with eggs was my favorite! Would definitely order this again. Hash browns were crispy. Veggies flavorful. Egg cooked perfectly (over hard). Ketchup on it was a game changer. Blueberry cornmeal pancake was nice and sweet to finish off my meal. Appreciate the real maple syrup. Fried green tomatoes paired very nicely with the cheese dipping sauce. read more

The worker was great! She was very friendly. 3 stars for the food. We ordered the Reggie Deluxe to share as our little breakfast snackie. A fried chicken with shitake mushroom gravy and a fried egg on top. The biscuit and fried chicken was dry inside. We were disappointed. The gravy tasted good and made it a lot better for the driness but meh. The portion os big, so we were glad we shared one. The space for dining was enjoyable. read more

Stopped by for Saturday brunch and it was popping. Not too long of a weight though. The biscuits are made fresh and delicious! Their hot cocoa was able to warm me up. The hash browns were fried perfectly. Lots of seating indoors and outdoors. Water and condiments are self serving. You buss your own tables. Overall a good experience. Lots of natural lightning. Good food and would return. read more

We went here to eat breakfast and it has been awhile since we'd been here. They have updated the menu and I loved the veggie egg biscuit sandwich. Love the mushroom sauce. Our favorite coffee is Coava coffee too, which they serve. They are clean and friendly folks. My boyfriend liked his breakfast sandwich but he got sick after his. He is lactose intolerant and so he thought the sauce with the meat ones probably had cream in it. Overall our breakfast was yummy. read more

Super cozy and homey family vibe!! Biscuits made from scratch is the best here! All the options of dishes are pretty original and very tasty. The portions are just enough to feel satisfied and full. Beer, wine, and other drinks are included in the menu as well as coffee and the like. All of the staff had smiles and warmth on their faces. Wish there was a spot like this in California. This place was amazing! Again, a line lol. I split a reggie deluxe. Amazing. Reminded me of high school so they win the nostalgia points. I also got an iced latte which was very tasty too. A really good spot and well worth trying. read more

A solid spot for a day when I want to do nothing more than clog my arteries and love every minute of it. Of course, we couldn't start our morning in a food coma, so the 5 of us shared two dishes: THE REGGIE (Fried chicken, bacon, and Tillamook cheddar. Topped with choice of gravy): Dry fried chicken. Yummy, hearty sausage gravy. BRISKET BISCUIT (Smoked brisket topped with caramelized onions): Tender & juicy meat! & the biscuits? Fluffy inside, crispy outside. Not quite flakey or buttery, but definitely comforting in the chilly weather. It's mostly self-service: Find a seat. Fetch your own water/coffee, utensils, ketchup or hot sauce. Was so excited to go here- was so glad to leave... First off the service was full "Portlandia" - affected 'tude to the max. It was almost humorous. Almost. But really, it was pretty obnoxious. Then came the food... The only thing I can think of to describe it was, well, gross... Cold old (pureed?) gravy and biscuits were not good. Like, really not good. Something about the finely minced sausage made it seem super industrial and gross. Service had quite a bit of saccharine as well. Not my vibe - never going here again. read more

Pine State Biscuits is probably the most iconic Portland institution. I don't always stop by when I visit Portland, but when I do, it's always such a nice treat. I always order an old favorite and try a lil something new. I love the Moneyball Double Down ($14) with a side of bacon ($6.00). It's a biscuit and gravy topped with 2 over easy eggs. It's simple, but you can really taste the buttery biscuit without being weighed down by other things. The biscuit is smothered in a creamy, decadent sausage gravy and topped with the perfect over easy egg (s). It's a solid choice if you don't want to commit to a sandwich. On this visit, I also tried the Wedgie ($14) which is a really fun take on a wedge salad except in sandwich form. The Wedgie has a generous piece of juicy fried chicken, a fried green tomato, and organic iceberg wedge topped with your choice of blue cheese or ranch sandwiched between a biscuit. Ngl, you're gonna have to knife and fork this bad boy, but it's well worth the extra effort. The iceberg wedge added a nice refreshing snap to each bite and with the dressing helped cut all the fried stuff. Unexpectedly so good. PSA: Don't sleep on their baked goods. I came here one morning for brunch and it was a very heavy but delicious meal. Located on 23rd, there are lots of other shops you can check out before or after your meal and the area is very lively. The place is ordering-at-the-counter and they will bring the food out to you. Water is self-serve. Service is fairly quick and nice. When I went, I got their Hash Ups and their Shrimp and Grits. Both were huge portions, super flavorful, and very VERY filling. Definitely a good spot if you're looking for a big Southern breakfast. read more

Simply outstanding biscuits and great fried chicken. I've been here a few times already, and every time I'm in Portland, I end up getting a hangover brunch here. Good drink selection, including delicious coffee of course, and super nice service. It's a well executed menu but I went with the special that day: pimento cheese hot honey chicken biscuit. Shockingly, was able to eat this with my hands and the sandwich kept it's integrity. Every bite just kept getting better: soft and buttery biscuit, delightfully candied jalapeños and the hot honey bring sweet and heat, juicy and perfectly fried chicken with amazing pimento cheese sauce. I love being to watch the cooks and bakers work in this kitchen - they're doing so much good work and would come back in a heartbeat. read more

We ordered which took 20 minutes and it took over 40 minutes from ordering to get our food. Not a good experience. Especially for something as simple as a biscuit egg and sausage..At least say something if you are that behind in the kitchen when we order, this is unacceptable. read more

Came here after hearinf how amazing the biscuits and brekkie were here and who doesnt love a good biscuit?!! Food is ordered from counter and the. Brought to you. I wanted to try something different so opted for a veggie sausge with biscuits / gravy and coffee. Others in group tried biscuits with gravy and a pork sandwich ( with biscuits of course) Food came out relatively quickly and was as good as advertised. Biscuits were flavorful, flaky and buttery. Gravy was great and overall really enjoyed it. Believe the hype! This place lives up to its billing and is well worth a visit if you're in the area or visiting Portland! read more

Let me start by saying I'm a long time fan and still am. Food always taste good here. I tried the chicken fried steak for the first time and it was good. The mushroom gravy is very tasty. Red velvet whiskey pop tart is my new favorite. So good. My disappointment was in the hash up. Normally this is Go to favorite of mine. And it still taste good. But the portion size shrunk. Like it's an entire plate smaller...it used to fill the larger plate in the picture but now comes on a smaller plate. I get that inflation is hard on restaurants and they're all doing things...and I'd rather they stay open than not. Just a little sad that a favorite of mine is changing so that I probably will not order this again and just make it at home. I'll still come to Pine State because where else am I going to get good biscuits loaded with all sorts of stuff served by friendly people. read more

My brother flew in and our first stop was Pine State Biscuits. What a unique location and building. The food was filling. I ordered the Hash up with two over easy eggs, lots of hash browns, onions, cheese and mushrooms. Very filling. My brother had the money ball with egg, the gravy was nice is thick, tasty and hearty. The service was great as well as the food prep they were very quick. The interior is very country rustic. They open the side walls to let in a lot of light. They also have outdoor seating. read more

We've missed Pine State Biscuits since visiting a few years ago! We're back for The Reggie! It's decadent and filling but worth the calories. We. Located on a corner street with plenty of meters street parking around, there is indoor and outdoor seating. We chose to sit outside since it was a nice and sunny day - and even sitting outside staff checked on us frequently! Wanted to try many thing on the menu so we ordered a Reggie, Reggie deluxe, Mac & Cheese bites, fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, coconut water and of course Marion berry jam - because when in the PNW (why not!) and strawberry butter! Reggie - fried chicken, cheese, bacon and gravy (you can choose between sausage OR mushroom - I got both!) doesn't look too good but it was tasty!! The biscuit was nice and flakey- and I couldn't finish it! The Reggie deluxe is the same as a Reggie but with a fried egg. Max & Cheese bites were tasty nice crunch and gooey insides. Fried green tomatoes -just meh, not much to say about them. Best part is they have so many different and seasonal jams and butters! Will be coming back when I visit again! read more

We placed a to go order for fried green tomatoes, a la carte biscuit, mushroom gravy, and scrambled eggs. The food was hot, fresh, and ready on time. Employees were all friendly and the restaurant was clean. I take every opportunity I get to order fried green tomatoes and these did not disappoint. The breading was not thick but not too thin, just right. I suggest getting the pimento cheese to put on top. The biscuit itself was soft and fluffy inside with the perfect amount of saltiness and tad crunch on the bottom. The eggs definitely needed salt and pepper but luckily I had asked for packets. Tasty!! This is a unique place, and I would say this is definitely a Portland local food place to try. This is essentially a biscuit sandwich breakfast place. They have so many options. I ordered the one with fried chicken, sausage gravy, and bacon (The Reggie). Oh my gosh was it delicious! The gravy was a bit salty, but I like salty. They also offer mushroom gravy which I tried, and it is not as salty. I also ordered a vanilla latte. It was smooth and yummy. It was so good I ate here twice in a row on my trip to Portland. This chain seems to be taking over PDX. Interior and exterior are both crisp and modern, with indoor and outdoor seating. Go up to the counter, order and they'll bring it out when ready. Service is quick and friendly. You're here for biscuits and their biscuits are killer. Flaky and buttery, no matter what you order, you're going to love it, though it will put you into hibernation mode immediately after. I tried a Reggie, which is *gulp* fried chicken, bacon, cheddar on a biscuit, smothered in sausage gravy. Every component was perfect - super well seasoned fried chicken, salty porky bacon, tillamook cheddar is divine, all on that perfect biscuit. And ya, dump some flavorful gravy over all that. One bite and you'll be in heaven (and dreamland). If you go for the combo, I highly recommend the coleslaw to cut through the grease, as it's got a good vinegary tang and is just good coleslaw in general. Man oh man... how excited was I to try the shrimp and grits. The line outside had me feeling like this was gonna be a five star meal and oh how letdown was I? First of all whoever plates, these dishes, you are amazing and you make this food look way better than what it is. Meaning that in the most positive way. I just have to remember that the Pacific Northwest does not know anything about Cajun dish. My grandfather is from Louisiana eating gumbo and shrimp and grits is a part of my southern heritage.. and I'm from the east coast. It has almost no flavor ..legitimately..But such a beautiful plate. My brain doesn't understand. I don't want to leave them a 1-2 star review because I have only tried the shrimp and grits. But that was for sure a 1 star dish read more

I started going to Pine State when there only location was on Alberta.. I am crazy about Biscuits and gravy and have eaten it all over the country and think that their Sausage grave might be the best that I have ever had., I order one thing 80% of the time ..Their Money Ball double down ( 2 eggs over easy one split biscuit.. Sometimes the line is long.. if you don't want to wait .. go early.. if you go on the weekend and it's after 10 am .. you're going to wait... Life's full of choices.. if you want the best Biscuits and gravy in Portland and you want quick service.. Get up !!! And go early...!!! read more

It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building. Tucked into the corner of SW 12th and Alder in the West End, the space is warm and comfortable with wood accents, soft leather banquettes, and just the right amount of energy. The Dolly Focaccia with roasted garlic and olive oil, the Roasted Carrot & Farro Salad and the Grilled Heirloom Carrots are all simple and delicious. On the pasta side, the Tagliatelle al Burro is perfect, and the Black Kale Pesto Mafaldine with roasted mushroom and the Braised Short Rib Arancini with pecorino aioli and honey are equally good choices if you're after something a little more complex. The folks who work here are knowledgeable and attentive, never intrusive. Even with the drive in now, it's worth it every time. Highly recommend, whether it's a special occasion or just a reason to head back downtown.

Luckily, I was able to secure a reservation. The walk over was under 10 minutes for both of us. It gave me just the perfect amount of time to kill a j. I was ready to drink all the things. Sure enough, my hydration station had 3 options. Limoncello spritz for the fun category, water for hydration and Americano soda for the caffeine. The spritz was perfection. We started off with an order of the arancini. As we were unsure if we would like it, we got one then got another one as soon as we got our first bite. That was followed by the donuts. We were all in agreement that some type of dipping sauce would be a nice touch. My suggestion is dulce de leche. We then went to town on the broccoli &! Italian sausage, hash and tagliatelle. When I tell you - I was in food heaven. That tagliatelle was IT. My friends were kind enough to let me finish the rest. I gave way to the other two. Despite being ridiculous full, we still managed to make room for dessert. We got the cookie and lemon pound cake. Bro that pound cake can get it. The mascarpone whip on top made me tingle on the inside after I got a taste. My gawd I wanted to eat the whole thing. The biggest compliment came at the end of the night when my friend told me I chose the perfect spot and picked all the right dishes. Big thanks to Mike for taking such great care of us. He had the best response to my answer when he asked if we had allergy restrictions. I can't wait to come back the next time I'm in town.
