The chicken fried steak was nice and the gravy was unique with a mustard base. The biscuit was perfect. The bad: I had a fork full of pancakes and pulled a hair out of my mouth. That was NOT tasty. The endless coffee. They had 2 pump coffee dispensers. One was empty, they brought over a full one when asked. I filled mugs one each out of different dispensers. No clean spoons to stir with. Both mugs of coffee were cold, even from the new dispenser. They promptly worked at getting new coffee. When it was done, I filled my mugs, still no clean spoons. I asked for spoons and they were provided. Later I wondered how long the milk had been sitting there. When I asked the coffee guy about the milk he said they change it every day. I told him I was concerned that it may not be good, he said something to the effect of yeah I understand. I didn't see it checked or replaced. I grew up in Portland, but live out of town. There isn't much seating indoors, maybe 4 or 5 booth tables and additional bar-style seating, so we sat outside which was fully covered and had heaters. I ordered the chicken friend steak with biscuit and mushroom gravy. One friend ordered a biscuit breakfast sandwich (I believe the Reggie) and a homemade red velvet pop tart. The other friend ordered the biscuit with mushroom gravy. Everything was amazing. So flavorful and so comforting. Portions are also pretty big and worth the price. It bordered on it, but couldn't quite make the leap. It didn't lose its grip, and plummet into the chasm of mediocrity, but it dangled with its legs flailing for a bit. "The Reggie", their basic chicken biscuit, was a bit dry. It really could have used a little bit more gravy. The chicken was good, and the breading was excellent. The biscuit itself was the dry part. There was too much of it for the amount of gravy. Now, I'm not from the South. I've only been dabbling in Southern Cuisine for a few years, so I fully admit that I may be missing the point. The chicken fried steak was decent. Smothered with their delicious gravy with an open faced biscuit on the side, it was the stand out meal at the table. The Wedge is interesting. I may have to order one myself to get more of a taste of it. The brisket was a little tough, though. The fries were decent. The cheesy fries were lackluster (a little cheddar melted in the center), but the Cajun fries had a nice spice, and they weren't afraid to heap it on. I can't think of words to adequately describe the McIsley. It's a biscuit sandwich with an amazingly tasty fried chicken breast, stone ground mustard and the best pickles I've ever had. They serve this with a ribbon of honey around the plate and this just put it over the top. My dining companion had the Moneyball - biscuit and gravy, with an over easy egg atop it. Instead, they were dense and tasted like they had been refried more than once. Would not recommend. Of course, eating here is an indulgent, heavy meal, and I did enjoy the biscuit and gravy a lot. At this point, I have been to Pine State Biscuits twice and all I can say is, I WILL be back. I am not a huge gravy person, nor do I eat pork. This made their menu options off limits to me. The biscuit tasted freshly made and was soft to the touch, mixed with the chicken, egg, and cheese, which made for the perfect bite. I also tried the cinnamon bun, but this tasted borderline stale - not soft at all and hard to cut, I would not get this again. The star of the meal was the lemon meringue poptart, yum! Definitely on the tart side so beware but the flavor was amazing and went well with coffee. The honey butter was wonderful because it was honey layered on top with butter vs other places that usually mix honey and butter together giving butter with a slight honey flavor.
