I wanted to like this spot, it's got shuffleboard and the type of spot you want to go to in the mountains. The food was bar food but good bar food not the greasy scary kind and you could tell they used better than your average frozen ingredients & they had wine was better than the usual pub selection so based on the food and atmosphere I'd give this spot a high 4 stars. The problem was the service, we had a waitress that hated her job clearly, she was rude, no personality, rough arid the edges & no mask. It was the waitress with the terrible fried black hair. Now I'm not a sure stickler about masks but come on, when you're right up in someone's face right now and working put it on. The other waitress checked on us at one point & had a mask, was friendly, wish we had her it may have been a better experience. read more

Tried this place on Mother's Day and have to say I was less then impressed (in my opinion). I heard that they were owned by the same people as the Old Country Inn and really had high hopes. My experience was not very good. The service was really bad. Drinks were consistently empty and refills on soda were as much as a new soda (from the waitress). I tried the pork nachos and burger. Nachos were awesome! The burger was average. I asked for mayo for my burger and got charged $.50 for it. At the end of the night, my bill reflected going into Payson and eating at a steak house. The problem was the food reflected less then average. They are newer, so I will try again soon to see if it's changed. In my opinion, if the food quality increased, it would be worth the price. Right now, the food to price ratio don't match and the service needs to increase. Just my two cents. read more

Took my wife on Mother's Day as she's been wanting to go but we had been waiting for the newly opening stuff to die down. It was around 3pm when we went and about 1/4 full, we sat at the bar and Brandon our bartender was polite and professional and served all our needs promptly the whole time we where there. We ordered the local sausage board to start with because my wife loves sausage and then the half chicken and fish n chips for entree's both meals where good quality and ample amounts. We will definitely be driving back up to pine to eat but now it's a toss up between here and Old County Inn. read more

We come up to Pine on a regular basis. This was my 3rd stop in. 1st time we waited for 10 minutes and never even had someone ask if we wanted to eat. Plenty of staff looked at us and others that walked in but just ignored us. 2nd time we sat at the bar. Place wasn't super busy but people that came in just after us were told they could sit and order drinks but couldn't order food for 40 minutes. Last night was the 3rd time and this time because of Covid only 50% capacity. Waitress seems overwhelmed, our orders were messed up as were other tables around us. Out of so many things. Unsure what is going on because the food is really good but service like this discourages people from coming back. Last night, 2 hours and 3 of us had salads and the other just an appetizer. Went in on Thrs night around 6, think we were the 3rd or 4th big table seated around the same time. They were slammed and only had 1 server (Tatumn) and 1 bartender, and they hustled their butts off! We were absolutely surprised at how good this place was. No offense to small towns either, they all have their gems but Pinewood Tavern was as good if not better than any American style restaurant I have had in Phoenix. If you are in Pine, Payson or Strawberry visiting and looking for good food you will be hard pressed to find anything better. Was highly disappointed that trivia was canceled this week because it's usually a blast. Stayed for dinner anyways. Wife loved the hummus board, I had the AZ Cobb salad and it was out of this world portion amounts were on point! Our server was so good! We have a place in Strawberry,AZ and Pine-Wood Tavern is one of our go-to places to eat in the area. Solid all the way around: food, drinks & atmosphere. They have a nice outdoor patio to enjoy the mountain air and scenery. The owner is a chef who works the kitchen and keeps an eye on the place. They also have pretty cool local musicians who play on the weekends. This owner also owns another great restaurant down the street - Old County Inn (Pizza-Pizza!). read more

I can't believe we have never been here before today! We love camping in the area and the atmosphere and décor makes us still feel like we are in the great outdoors. There were 5 people in our party, and we shared the smoked pork nachos which was a huge portion! Easily sharable for 5 hungry adults. I got the Arizona Cobb, and it was packed full of toppings and easily filled me up. I was also pleased that my husband got the Dirty Fries since I really wanted to try the chili, and I could barely stop eating them. I was just so blown away with how good everything tasted. Arrived at the restaurant around 3:00pm. Took 5 minutes for someone to greet us at the hostess stand to be seated. Sat down for 30+ minutes and no acknowledgement by any server to give us water or take our orders. Finally gave up and left after hearing people around us complaining that they've waited forever just to pay their bill cause they couldn't get their servers attention. We sat on the patio (nice atmosphere) but the food took over 45 minutes to get to us from when we ordered. Supposedly, the ticket was "lost". Our server (Sharlie) should have kept on top of it, but was apologetic about it (she was quite nice). Our meals (Reuben and side salad; Turkey BLT with fries), were not good, except for the fries. My sandwich was loaded with sauce that ruined the sandwich. The BLT was not toasted properly, and the one that we were served was much smaller than one that was served at another table. We got a "discount" for the time issue...the amount was about $2.50, which was an insult. When our server went back to the manager to ask for more of a discount, not sure what he said but she came back and said she would pay our bill, which made us feel horrible because if she really had to pay it herself then the management is really stingy. read more

I have been to the Pinewood Tavern three times for lunch and once for dinner. Service: the staff do their best to accommodate your needs/requests. Food: Good for the area. Pine is in a remote location. Reason for two stars: **The SEATS in the tavern are the most uncomfortable I have EVER sat in. Take "old style" classroom seats and then imagine the IRS makes a version for taxpayers to use. Absolutely horrible and zero comfort. I asked my server if anyone complains about the chairs (not the bar chairs, general restaurant seating) and she stated "oh yes, all the time and the owner could care less". WOW.... OWNER - I believe your name is Michael: PURCHASE COMFORTABLE CHAIRS! Another issue: I ordered a salad, and the dressing comes in a very small paper cup on the side. If you wish to have another SMALL paper cup of dressing, the Pinewood Tavern charges .50 cents. Ridiculous... Prices for the food are not cheap to begin with. read more

4.5 stars, but I couldn't bring myself to only give 4 in the rating, because the business deserves better than that. Our server (Jim) was very friendly and attentive our entire visit, and the food was really good. Among other things, we ordered the fried chicken special. The chicken was fried perfectly. I would have liked more seasoning in the breading and less butter on the corn, but those are my only complaints. The toasted rolls and side of syrup were a nice touch as well. I was also impressed with the variety of items on the menu. It was clear the tavern was striving to provide something for everybody. They even offered PB&J on the kids' menu, which was perfect for my daughter. The house salad was a pleasant surprise as well. Mixed greens, English cucumbers, tomato, cheese, and croutons. Yum. We tried to give pinewood another neighborly try as we were incredibly disappointed on our previous visit. This time we tried a lunch time visit on a Monday. The place wad busy at 3pm. Although our waiter forgot our soda and our appetizer of Dirty fries was late to arrive, the deliciousness of the fries was gratifying. When our food arrived, we were happy about the flavors but we noticed the pulled pork sandwich had no coleslaw in the sandwich as customary and also as mentioned on the menu. We immediately asked one of the servers about it. She was surprised and told us she will be back with coleslaw. 5 minutes later we got the attention of our actual waiter who seemed overwhelmed and told him the sandwich was missing coleslaw. He said that they had ran out of coleslaw. I nicely mentioned to him that the right thing to do when an ingredient is missing from an order, is to let the customer know to change their order. He just looked and shrugged. He did not offer to make it right or apologize. It seems like the staff is always shorthanded, with no communication between the front of the house and the kitchen. Remember, it is not the quality of the food but the attentiveness and care that I am complaining about. We were not even once approached to be asked how everything was, and this should be something all restaurants do few minutes after serving the customer. The food is good and gets my 3 stars as the service still needs lots of work. Would I give them a 3rd chance? read more
