The food here is good. That's not the problem. The problem is the hypocrisy!! Signs on the walls talking about vegans saving the world, which is fine but then you order a smoothie and it comes in a plastic cup that makes a McDonald's big gulp cup seem insubstantial. I mean this thing is THICK , heavy plastic with an accompanying ridiculous straw. When I first started going here they had dishware that actually was re-used; washed in a dishwasher. Ok- it's really difficult these days to employ dishwashers. I understand that but at the very least go with compostable materials. Embarrassing. Won't go here again until they ditch those cups. read more

Run don't walk to this insanely delicious vegan spot!! We went two rounds to try so many delicious offers on the menu. We had the nachos, coffee, crunch wrap supreme, croissant, breakfast Sammy, smoothie (green and yummy), chicken yummies, blueberry French toast bites. Great place! I am not a vegan, but my good friend is, and when she heard about this place she was SO EXCITED. The first time we tried to go was in the evening and they were closed for a private event (something to be aware of), but the next time we went was for brunch. I got the french toast, which first of all was beautiful, and second of all was delicious! As someone who eats all sorts of animal products and does not plan on weaning off of them, I truly could not tell that this meal was vegan. My friend had the nachos and loved them. It's a casual place where you order up front and then have a number at your table- small, but cool atmosphere right on the Winooski River. This place is AMAZING!! We ate here 4 times during our stay in Burlington and loved every single thing we've had. Breakfast sammie (super unique and yummy), avocado toast and rancheros are all great breakfast choices. They have gluten free millet bread for us GF folks. Fresh rolls and broccoli bytes are great shareables and Buddha-ful bowl is out of this world and huge! They also have yummy gluten free pastries. I love the location with the view of the river, too. We arrived at a busy time, mid- morning on a Sunday. The seating was very scarce, but by the time the food was ready, a few spots opened up. We had the Reuben with a side salad. The sandwich was good but didn't check off any characteristics of a Reuben. It seemed a little busy with toppings. The side salad was pretty large and colorful. Super cool spot. I'm not a vegan or have much experience in eating vegan, but this is the spot go to when I want a quick delicious meal that I know is going to be healthy and filling! Always cool to try different things on the menu because they have some creative and mind blowing items that you can't believe are vegan. Their avocado toast is amazing as are the smoothies, but I recommend trying lots of other things (sandwiches, breakfast, burritos). Today I went in and got a bunch of items to bring home for brunch. Due to a miscommunication in the order (both mine and the employees fault) we were missing an item. I went back 5 minutes later and the employee was waiting for me with the item and was apologetic and friendly about it. He insisted on giving us a free cinnamon roll. Talk about awesome service and friendly staff! This place is great! read more

I think this might be the only place in Burlington where vegans can order anything off the menu without modification, and while it's a little surprising a place like this didn't pop up earlier, it's seemingly worth the wait. I'm an unabashed omnivore, but my vegan buds were extremely pleased with their sammies, salads and snack options,. I can only speak for the falafel, which was a little less fried and veggie-laden than its conventional counterpart (not to mention, void of any dairy-based sauce), but it hit the spot for me. My veg friend raved about the eggplant bacon. Sandwiches come with a side salad and pickle. Oh, and try the smoothie with coffee and banana-- I can't remember what it was called, but it was damn good and gave my friendos the mid-afternoon jolt they needed. I want to give an all-vegan restaurant five stars just for existing -- thank you for that much. I will return to Pingala because it is vegan and good enough. The menu is fun and creative. The flavors are interesting. But the food preparation is inconsistent and portions are too small and we leave hungry. Today my husband and I each ordered the sweet potato quesadillas with added avocado for an extra $1, a $10 dish. The three small triangles of quesadilla were flavorful, but mostly bready quesadilla wrap. Nice wrap, but I'm not much for lots of starch. The vegan cheese was tasty with a tiny piquant bite. The tiny side salad and smidge of pickle were yummy. After my husband and I had cleaned our plates, we were ready for at least that much again. Dessert quality was inconsistent from our first to our second visit. On our first visit, the donuts we bought were delicious, moist and perfect texture and subtle flavor. Today they were a bit grainy and the flavors didn't balance well. I was so hungry after finishing lunch that I was glad for the chocolate peanut butter cookies that had too much salty peanut better because I needed another meal ingredient. Then I didn't feel well from eating too much dessert and not enough nutritious food. Please keep coming back to Pingala. We will. With hopes for improvement. read more

A vegan's dream, in short. The location of this little cafe is perfect. I could spend hours here drinking coffee and watching the water. The staff leaves you alone for the most part and doesn't tend to ask you how the food is or if you need anything. It's quiet and a good place to get work done. The food is incredible and creative. For a lot of vegan places, vegan food is just slapping some veggies and pasta on a plate and calling it a day. Pingala is creative and deliberate with the food on their menu. I dig the funky vegan vibe & music in this place and the locale within the chase mill. Visited here three times and each time the food was good, this last time the sunflower donut was the standout. Tofu ranchero tacos had s good balance of textures, temperatures and flavor, (but needed more sauce) I like this place for the music, the vibe, and the quality of the vegetarian fare. However, My consistent gripe with Pingala is they seem to be stingy with sauces with every dish I've ordered. The French toast came with only about a Tbsp of maple syrup, a tsp of cashew butter, and only a tiny drizzle of berry compote (being that it was listed on the menu I expected at least a couple tablespoons). Also, to me the food is overpriced considering there is no expensive meat involved. $12 for two vege tacos seems a bit much. read more

Long term vegan here; love a good vegan restaurant--VERY excited to see one in the Burlington area. I was also stoked on the great reviews! I think their positive nature got my hopes up too high. I got the "cali club" and it was ok, but they left a slab of untreated tofu (or tofu like substance) in the sandwich. Not doing something tasty with tofu is a vegan cardinal sin to me. I just didn't get it--even if the rest of the sandwich was tasty. Similarly my mother got tempeh tacos and the tempeh seemed simply tossed in some sauce and there was just a little pile on the taco. Very underwhelming. Oh! And the menu said we each got a pickle--and guess what? No pickles! And I left hungry. I thought the prices were good and then I saw the small plate sizes. I eat a lot of food. A small sandwich and a little salad just don't cut it with me. I wish there had been some chips or a potato salad or something. Bummertown. Location was great; workers were lovely; vibe was good. If you eat like a mouse and like very simple prepared food this could be your jam! My mother said after, "vegan food is not very filling"--my friends! It's not true! It's perfectly filling if one is eating a MEAL and not just a snack! Cute spot for sure! However our food was not so flavorful and the portions were small. I had a "Food Truck Burger", which was literally a square of tempeh cut from the longer blocks you get at the store. It did have a tasty honey sauce of some sort and the bun was decent. The flavors were very bland though and the tempeh was barely warm with no grill marks or anything. Hardly a "burger" of any sort. Tiny side salad that was rather wilted. All this for $10. My lady got the Chilled Arugula Salad which was about 1/3 a clamshell of arugula with some blueberries and some sort of dressing, topped with charred tasteless eggplant "bacon" and some strange triangles of old bread. Also $10. We left hungry and scratching our heads. The service was OK and the place is definitely cute, but if I go back I'll just get a coffee and enjoy the view and the characters coming and going. read more

This is what vegan food should be! I'm not vegan at all, but I would eat here all the time if I still lived in the area. Unless you're a cave man who insists on eating meat at every meal, you will definitely find something to eat at Pingala. Our food order consisted of buffalo broccoli, falafel, and dumplings, all of which were good. The broccoli was the clear favorite, but I'm also a sucker for anything with wing sauce on it. Too many vegan restaurants try to create vegan versions of dishes that are supposed to have meat in them and forget that there are plenty of dishes to work with that never had meat in them and wouldn't be improved by its presence, even in the opinion of a committed carnivore. Pingala is also in a nice spot to enjoy a meal, occupying a storefront on the first floor of a mill overlooking the Winooski River and downtown Winooski. I didn't try the coffee since it was a million degrees out, but it was all from good quality roasters. Everything is reasonably priced, if not exactly cheap, so this should a be a regular spot for anyone who lives nearby. read more

The Food Truck Reuben was much better than the ELT, but bore no resemblance to a Reuben-it was a totally different thing. Veggie burger was reportedly good but caused my brother's stomach to ache a bit after eating it. I would not return to this place. Between the varying flavors (from bad to pretty good, but not excellent), the unfriendly staff, limited seating, and depressing playlist...well, no need to come back. I was staying up in Smuggs a few weeks ago and my bf and I were searching for some good vegan food. I'm so glad I found this place! I had a sweet potato quesadilla on the first visit that was yummy. The dip that went along with it was great and I put it on the little side "salad" and cleaned the plate. I also had a molasses ginger cookie (probably the highlight). But we liked it do much we came back a second time and I got the ELT. It was even better than the quesadilla. Loved the eggplant bacon and maple aioli. Awesome sandwich! The scone we got for dessert was kind of dry, but the meal was great.
