The last day of vacation, my wife being from Mexico, she was really looking forward to eating a good Spanish breakfast. I wish I could tell you it was good, but the young man at the counter was so flippantly arrogant we walked out. My son is a bit picky and just wanted an order of eggs...but he said they couldn't do it as they had no way of ringing it up. We then asked if they could make another of their breakfasts and put the eggs on the side. "No...we don't cook exceptions!" (What the...?!?). Went here while visiting my nephew who's in college. He's has been here before and for weeks he has been talking about the Queso dip.... and he is not a fan of cheese at all. From the outside this place looked closed when we drove up.., very dark inside and no one else was there, just those who work there. They do have outside seating. We were greeted by a very nice waitress and the place is nicely decorated. And clean. We had the Queso, Guacamole to start and both were delicious. I can see why my nephew likes the Queso so much. If you're into a trendy/hip kind of vibe, this is the place for you. I came here for lunch and enjoyed my time sitting outside, luckily it was a nice day because we had to wait 40-45 mins to get out food. The flavor and quality of the food is 5 out of 5 stars. The prices are a little high for me, that's just a personal thing. I don't like to spend more than like $10-12 on a lunch. Also the other trouble was having time to actually eat the taco I waited so long to get. You have to scarf them down or the shell disintegrates into mush. The guac is served with plate sized chips and 4-5 of them which was a little strange. Now don't get me wrong the presentation of all this was really nice. We were craving something a little different for brunch one Sunday morning so we decided to try Pink Cactus. Boy, am I glad we did! Not your typical "gringo" Mexican menu items and flavors, which makes this a very welcome (and much needed) addition to the Charleston culinary scene. The service was wonderful and the chef could not have been more accommodating to work around a food allergy, modifying a menu item and even sending out something extra. I wanted to love this place!!! First, there was one waitress for the entire patio...maybe she was having a bad day or overwhelmed... but we had to ask for things several times. It was 2 adults and 4 kids.... and we were really trying to figure out how to enjoy the food. First.... they serve the salsa and chips ( that you pay for) with big huge chips, maybe 4 of them. Kids don't understand that you have to break them, so they would take a whole chip dropping on the floor and then it was nothing to eat the salsa with. We asked for more chips several times and never got any. The Appetizers were OK. The guacamole was fine as well as the queso. We ordered a pink cactus margarita and it just tasted like water. Then we ordered two taco platters and two separate tacos for the kids. Everything needed salt and it took her 10 minutes to get salt. Normally that's not a huge deal we had to ask twice, but we were outside and there was flies all over our food. The tacos weren't served with any sort of salsa or lime. It was just big chunks of meat with a Tortilla. I hate to leave Bad reviews, but we spent $115 and left half of our food at the table. If you want to go there for beer and queso or guacamole It's probably a great place to go. However, going there to eat the food it's not suggested. read more

WoW! Flavor, Flavor, Flavor!!! There were so many things on the menu that I wanted to try unfortunately I was by myself so I can only eat so much! I wanted to try the shrimp however you had to peel them and I was not interested in getting messy or working for my food so I will save that for another day! I wanted to try the guacamole as well but they only offered large portions I guess I will have to come back with someone else to try the guacamole (sucks for solo diners) I wanted to try the scallops but it was a large entree but I wanted to try so many other things that I just opted for three small items and one cocktail. I had the pink margarita with black salt, the Tostada, the pork Taco and the vegetarian cauliflower Taco... it was sooooooooo good!!! Believe it or not the cauliflower Taco was so good that I ordered a second one! Lol ! I can't wait to come back and try the enchiladas, guacamole, and scallops hopefully they will still have them on the menu. The food was nicely plated and proportioned not to mention the flavors we're out of this world! My server was Hannah and she was wonderful with her recommendations. The place was quaint and cute and I can totally see them expanding hopefully soon they will do a brunch and get some outside table set up. I've been here a couple times now and I think it's one of the more authentic Mexican restaurants in Charleston. It isn't a taco burrito type place with sloppy portions of food. there are good flavors and interesting dishes that you probably haven't tasted elsewhere especially in the Charleston area. Overpriced, bad food, terrible service. Don't eat here. I used to work food and bev, so I try to be as understanding to staff as possible but.... The cook was SO rude. I could hear her yelling at someone in the back multiple times throughout the night about very stupid and small things. Normally, I wouldn't notice, as I was trying to enjoy a night out with friends, but it was impossible not to hear her. Completely ruined the entire experience. When she came out of the kitchen, I heard her yell at a server for very small things in front of customers (the server was trying to ring in an order, and the cook snapped at her to bus a table first. When the server did bus the table and brought the dishes back to the kitchen, the cook yelled at her again for "trying to run in front of her"). She yelled again multiple times, but I didn't pay attention to what she said. I talked to the server before I left and she was visibly shaking and holding back tears. She said it was her first day and was very sweet and apologetic for what I heard even though it wasn't her fault. The other servers were mostly nice but clearly overworked. Getting seated was confusing and took forever even though they clearly had seats. The Food: They don't do modifications, and some menu items have ingredients not listed on the menu. I have allergies, and they told me no modifications. It was nearly impossible to eat, despite the fact that simple substitutions/removing ingredients would have solved the problem. Drinks are not good, and are really overpriced. With the amount of money they ask you to spend, you'd expect better. Food also took forever (probably because the cook was busy yelling at everyone instead of doing her job). Overall, disappointing and stressful. Won't go back. read more

Pink Cactus is one of my favorite spots in town with the BEST chips! Its the perfect spot for some good food and a great vibe. The staff is spectacular- especially the bartender / manager, I think he said his name was Kyle. He always gets our food out quickly and the drinks he makes are sooo good! We're from Colorado, and we were pleasantly surprised by the caliber of this Mexican food. It is seriously good! Too much Mexican is similar-tasting glop. The flavors and textures here are bright, fresh, distinctive. Highly recommended! However ... somebody really isn't paying attention to the full diner experience. The soundtrack played while we were there was very loud, very off-putting, very profane hip-hop and rap. There's a place and time for that music; when you are trying to relax and have a conversation over dinner is not one of them. If Pink Cactus played Spanish guitar or similar instrumentals, I'd absolutely give it five stars. read more

The service experience was truly one of the worst I have ever experienced. From the moment we walked in the door, there was no clear host. We finally flagged down a frantic server who seemed far too overwhelmed to really assist us. She then just kept coming to ask how many in our party and clearly had no system of keeping track of who was waiting for tables. While we were waiting we sat at the bar for at least 15 minutes and the bar tender NEVER acknowledged us. We were then escorted to a table and told to just order drinks from there because it would be faster. We ordered drinks as soon as we were seated and waited another at least 20 minutes for drinks. We ordered very simple appetizers - guacamole and queso. We were brought some salsas as an apology for the slow service but never any mention of our apps. We finally asked for them another 20 minutes later and our server seemed genuinely surprised. We weren't even offered the chance to order entrees until we had been seated for at least an hour. A server tried to bring us another tables food twice. When she finally brought our food, she had no idea who had ordered what nor could she tell what type of tacos were on each plate. It was a literal disaster in your restaurant last night. What seems like quite simple food and a menu that should allow for somewhat quick dining was a two hour dinner (much of which was spent being totally ignored and/or having items forgotten). It seemed there was no clear leader or manager in the space. Also the cocktails were watered down. They served a glass of white wine at room temperature. The carnitas were pretty good but other tacos fairly unimaginative. I'll be surprised if this place stays open for very long. read more

The food was okay but nothing exciting, it's a little odd that you have to put your own tacos together when you get the plate...and the tortillas are so greasy, it's just not pleasant. Appetizer trio (chips with quest, guac & salsa) was good but again nothing special, the portions were big so we ran out of chips and were charged for more which is pretty ridiculous. I also asked for hot sauce for my tacos (Valentina, chalupa, something with a kick to it) and they gave me a cup of more salsa and charged me for that. Neither extra charges were communicated to us prior. It's expensive for how just okay it is, I spent $55 on lunch that I could've spent somewhere else with great food. Pretty dam solid food but hands down the worst service I've experienced in 10 years. Not sure how to explain it but everyone had a confused bitchy vibe. Even after messing up multiple orders and forgetting to even take half the table's drink orders. Drinks took on avg 20+ mins. We also ordered a round of Don 42 that would have run about 120 bucks but after 25 mins we cancelled since the bartender couldn't get to it. Hope the AC works this summer. They gave us the wrong menus, and when we got our checks the prices were more expensive. Asked our server about it and she didn't do anything. WE WERE CHARGED $7 FOR A TINY TACO. Expensive, tiny portions, poor restaurant etiquette. They need to get it together. I left a tip because I assumed she brought it up to her manager and they didn't do anything about it, but I could be totally wrong. I hope Pink Cactus can learn from this review and get rid of the old menus. And educate their staff on how to handle situations like this. It came off as very rude. I just had dinner there and it took a total of 30 mins to get just chips and guac. I was waiting for a second drink for 20 minutes and only saw my waitress twice for the two hour dinner i had. My drink was great but waited way too long to get the attention of my waitress. I am absolutely disgusted by the whole dinner i had there and wish It was a better experience. I have a lot of respect for the restaurant industry here in Charleston, especially since i work here in a restaurant. I will not stress enough how inconsiderate our waitress was, i saw the hostess who helped more than her. My food was not at all what i expected and had heard a lot of great things about this place. I hope the manager will read this and reevaluate there staff because I was treated like dog shit the minute I walked into the door. read more
