There's a few places on this trip I would like to try today. I picked this one as my first stop. I really like this place. Nice quaint, clean great service by waiters. The food comes out pretty quick. I love the little bar area. I love places that are magnetic to the locals.You can always tell how much they cherish the place And how much love is coming in the food and service. I have learned that if there are any items on a menu that keep coming up in the yelp photis, you must try. I saw so many photos have the goat cheese taco, so I knew coming in.I was going to try that and they did not let me down. Rich creamy goat cheese deep fried , flavorful breading, topped off with a sweet chili sauce , very creative. Tuna taco was awesome. I also tried the shrimp and chicken tacos. LOVED the calimari. The sauce with it was excellent. I definitely gotta get back. I wanted to visit all 4 resteraunts on this street. The waitress there was very very nice. The service is horrible the food is sub par at best. Not enough staff to serve the people in the bar. If you get a table be prepared to sit for 20 minutes before your drink or food order is taken and another twenty before your drinks arrive. The Grumpy Goat is a place that I've long heard about, but have yet to try until now! It's directly on Harbor View Rd with plenty of parking in front of and nearby. We went on quieter Friday night, which was actually nice as we were able to be seated right away and had our pick of a table on their outdoor patio area. As for being a local, this place hit the spot. Food options are very reasonably priced with nice delicious portions, enough to satisfy anyone's appetite. We order the guacamole and chips to start, followed by their rice bowls with shrimp and a side of their noteworthy brussels sprouts with jalapeno bacon, which I'd absolutely recommend! Service was good overall and we were happy to see they are very family and kid friendly. Pro Tip: Do yourself a favor and order a margarita as soon as you sit down, you'll be glad you did! This was just an average experience for me. I was a bit annoyed to hear another server mention that happy hour was going on, yet our server didn't let us know. She also didn't check back very often. I did enjoy the guac and queso. The chips were also warm and fresh. The salsa and shrimp taco salad were mediocre at best. Just not a lot of flavor. My boyfriend said his tacos were good. Wandered into the Gumpy Goat and was immediately regretful. Went in on July 24th with my mom and sister just for a quick dinner and was met with staff that was ANYTHING but happy to be there. I have worked in customer service for multiple years and cannot imagine being as blatantly rude as this girl was. She never gave us refills on our drinks, came and dropped our food off and didn't ask anything else at all, and then there were multiple occasions where she would just come to the table and take/leave things without a word (even when she was asked for more things for the table). I have never in my life felt as ignored as this woman made the entire table feel. 1/10 will never go back to this place knowing they have people like her on the staff. read more

This for me was just one of those places that you just like. The drinks are smaller but so are the prices when you compare them to other places. I would rather pay $7 for a drink than $13 and be able to have more flexibility in what I get next and not worry so much about running the tab up. We ate at the bar and loved the bartender - checked up on us kept us happy with food and drink - gave us time to just talk. The tacos were good but their 3 dips app was all quality eating - meaning I didn't feel so bad eating it because it tasted worth the calories! I enjoyed coming here and can't wait to go back. Blackened tuna taco was to die for - perfectly seared and flavors were on point. However despite being 1 of 2 tables in the place, our tacos took around 40 minutes to arrive. It seems they were pushing out lots of to go orders instead of the orders for customers in the restaurant. Goatarita was extremely sweet. All around good food and great prices though. Those Margaritas (Goataritas?) are really good! Things I don't like about Grumpy goat: - The food is not great. All the food we have tried is extremely salty and poorly made. Even the rice and beans are bad.. How can you mess that up? - Chips and salsa are not offered as a courtesy. You have to order them (and they cost extra), which is against my concept of a cantina I think this place has a lot of potential but needs to take a close look at the food menu and execution! read more

Oh my goodness! We just looked up a local cafe while we're traveling and this place came up. We started with the queso and we added chorizo. It immediately hit the spot. We had the Parmesan encrusted Mahi with rice and grilled squash. It did NOT disappoint! The crust was perfectly crunchy and the mango salsa on top was just sweet enough and the spicy cream sauce paired perfectly with it. We also ordered some tacos. The fish one and the steak one. Both were delicious although after the first 2 items, I was definitely getting full. The tortillas on the tacos was a little undercooked, not raw just not soft enough. But the stuffing made up for it. I ordered a Bloody Mary; it wasn't on the menu but they made one at my request. It was delicious and extra spicy, the way I like it. The kids ordered a quesadilla, which was just perfect for my 6 year old. The kids' fish sticks were hand made and delicious. However, it's a pretty big plate with plenty of homemade French fries! Finally, we ended the meal with a sopapilla topped with ice cream. I'll let you know how that is in a minute... it was delicious! I apologize for the lack of pictures, we couldn't wait to dig in. I'm happy I finally checked this place out and I didn't dislike it necessarily, but it wasn't really anything new or exciting. Their happy hour isn't anything special - basically $1 off drinks and that's it. When I asked if they had any happy hour specials on food they said "no, our food is cheap already". While their food isn't really expensive, it's not any cheaper than most places on JI. Anyway, their chips and guac/queso/salsa trio were good! Guac had a nice little spice to it. I personally like chunkier salsa and their queso is standard. I got a shrimp taco as well, again, it was good! But I've had similar elsewhere. My friend got their fried goat cheese taco, the cheese was mozzarella stick shape, we thought it would be a little better if they were small balls of goat cheese instead of one long log of it. read more

We were extremely disappointed. Started off with a trio of salsa,pretty basic, guacamole wasn't bad, but the salsa was definitely not made "in-house". The mains were really terrible, there's just no other way to put it. Shrimp taco came out cold with three small nondescript imported shrimp. At least use local shrimp, we're on the coast! This is my new favorite bar on James Island! The menu has a nice variety of offerings. I especially like the nachos. I have fallen in love with the Tropicale. It's made with tequila, pineapple juice, some other things and it has a sugary cinnamon rim. It is out of this world. The employees are outstanding-friendly, service oriented and fun. Despite living around the corner from the Grumpy Goat, I only just recently stopped in to try it. I've been dissuaded by the prices and the reviews, quite honestly. I enjoyed my meal here, but definitely had some qualms about the visit. I was mentally prepared to pay 4.50 for a taco, but so disappointed in the size of said taco. As a former Californian, I always balk at the price of tacos in Charleston anyway. If I'm paying this much for a taco I expect it to be packed and delicious. My tacos were about half full with pretty light meat. I was really disappointed that they don't do anything to the corn tortilla. It's pretty minimal effort to warm it up or toss it in on a grill for a second and it makes SUCH a difference. I struggled to eat my double corn tortilla taco with the dry tortilla. All that said, the flavors were good. The meat was seasoned well and tender. To speak to what others have said- the portions and the prices really don't add up. The queso dip, while yummy, was tiny. Same for my side of beans- really tasty but such a small amount for the price. I think we'll try brunch here because we did enjoy the food- just not the entire experience. read more

Our family has been going into Grumpy Goat for two years. We like the tacos and nachos, and the patio has been fun for our toddler. We will not be going back after we learned that the bartenders are giving customer drinks to take "on the road." I don't see how they have such good reviews the best thing we got out of four people was a quesadilla. It was really a disappointment. A bar that serves pretty decent food, the Fish Taco is good ( 5.00), sometimes it has a lot of fish, other times not so much, but still tasty and done well. The fish is Mahi Mahi also, which is a plus to me. The goat motif and goat saying stuff is entertaining to me and while they do have a goat cheese taco, the relevance of it all is a mystery to me, but maybe that's part of the charm of the place? They serve good drinks and use higher quality brands for the house brands ( Kudos to them!) They are priced like a local bar should be and not jacked up because you are on James island. One of the few places that actually have a happy hour still! The Chips and guacamole is a great thing to nosh on, the chips are served warm and the quac is made their and in good portions. Good value for 5.00. There is a local flair of people in the bar and it is mainly a drinking place for most of them. The bartenders are nice and very attentive. The local flair of the customers can be loud and opinionated at times, but that's why they have a long bar, you can sit 30 ft away and only be half annoyed. LOL They do have a nice outside patio that will be great in the warmer weather. I like the place and it is comfortable and welcoming and the arrangements of the TV's is excellent for watching sports. It is a great little neighborhood place that I would enjoy, if it were in my city. I feel fortunate to have enjoyed the place during my extended stay in the area. Grumpy Goat is a good place to get some solid Mexican food. The food is somewhere between those cookie cutter Mexican joints and those "boutique taco" places--all restaurants I regularly patronize, just depends on what you're in the mood for. They've got a nice outdoor patio and a bar with plenty of TVs if you want to watch the proverbial game. It's not a place I'd necessarily cross town to visit but if you live on James Island and are looking for a laid back place to grab a few tacos and a drink you should check it out. They do a pretty good brunch on the weekends too. read more

They are open during the quarantine! I got the Nachos with shrimp tonight via curbside pick up. Very good service. I really enjoyed the nachos and LOVE their queso. The dips were small and I wasn't impressed with the salsa. The taco was a fried log of goat cheese with a small amount of slaw. Neither taco was filled and shells should be doubled because they were falling apart. This location is known for bad food and short lived restaurants.
