My pick 3 from the weekday menu
    Renee I.

I love the mission of this place. That alone is enough reason for folks to give it a try. We had excellent service when my group visited. You do order at counter and they bring food to you. But they were happy to bring any item you forgot to pick up. I ordered the weekday deal which you picked 3 items. My eggs were cooked correctly, the sausage was just okay to me and the bowl of fruit was a bit small. Personally I'd rather pay a little more and get a slightly more fruit or thicker sausage. All in all I will definitely return here to try some of the baked goods. Or to have lunch.

I came here after reading the great reviews! Pioneer bakery didn't disappointed!!! Walked in and ordered with no wait around 8:45 am. There's plenty of seating. I love my western omelet brunch plate. The potatoes were one of the best I've ever had! Kids under 10 eat free so that was nice to take my kiddo along! The quiche is a on the small portion size but still tasty. Great place for families and brunch date!

Happened to stumble on this place while in Kirkwood and decided to check it out. I'll say this, I'm very particular about the biscuits and gravy that I eat and most restaurants where I've tried their biscuits and gravy weren't good at all, BUT Pioneer Cafe definitely showed out!! Their dish included soft, cheddar biscuits with a perfectly seasoned sausage gravy. It came with a side of eggs and giant, deep fried garlic parmesan potatoes. The meal was perfect and the storefront is beautiful. Pioneer Cafe is worth the stop!

Disclaimer. I did not eat anything at this spot because I was so full for lunch, but my friends did and the pineapple upside down cake and the gooey butter ice cream look phenomenal. We had so much fun at the spot! Thank goodness we didn't get kicked out. The staff was definitely ready for us to leave. We play entirely too much. Amazing spot with desserts all around. I had no idea this spot existed.

Pioneer Bakery Cafe is an awesome concept restaurant, it's amazing that they employ adults with disabilities, they really are pioneering a new wave of inclusivity! The Cafe is clean and large. There is seating by the windows and an upstairs area as well. They have a variety of different baked goods behind the glass, as well as drinks, food, and ice cream. I got a chai tea latte - in all honesty, it wasn't my favorite, it was really milky and sweet. I didn't get food this time but I've heard great things about their breakfast/brunch items, so I look forward to trying those in the future. The service was super fast, I was the only customer in line and they made my latte asap.

We were in town visiting friends and wanted a yummy casual place for breakfast. We stopped in and immediately were captivated by the bakery display cakes. "Are those cinnamon rolls under that icing?!" "Holy cow, is that a s'more cookie?!" "Look at those cannolis!" We could order via QR code from a table but chose to stand in line as we were still staring at the baked goods. The line moved very quickly and the staff was very helpful. In fact, my son got the previously mentioned s'mores cookie, turned too fast to take it to his seat, and it promptly went flying on to the floor. The staff immediately reassured him that it happens and got him a replacement. I ordered the pancakes as I expected small hands to steal from my plate. I ordered a black coffee and immediately fell in love when they asked me which roast I wanted as that is no longer the norm, even in coffee shops. The small ones ordered a sprinkle donut and a s'more cookie, while the spouse ordered the short rib hash with a berry smoothie. The food was incredible. The pancakes were light and fluffy and the hash had a tinge of horseradish that made it disappear so fast I was glad I stole a bite immediately. In addition to the food and the service, I love that Pioneer Bakery has a mission of job training and experience for adults with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities. Their Path to Success is displayed on the wall for everyone to see. The gentleman who took our order was one such individual and it was apparent he felt very supported and confident in his work. He also eased my son's tears when the cookie went flying. Oh-and they have ice cream later in the day!!

I love the concept, the guy at the counter was on the slower side. It seemed like everyone in line was understanding and patient! They have many different food options, we got the birria skillet and the Nashville hot Benni. The chicken on the Nashville hot was a frozen piece but the flavor was okay. The birria skillet was very good! Coffee was just okay. The upstairs room was not well taken care of, it was dirty and we felt out of place. Wish we would have sat in the main cafe area, we just felt gross the whole time. They did have a leak which they can't really help but the water dropping was brown and gross.

I was craving coffee on a Winter afternoon and I had read about this mission-minded establishment and wanted to try it. Parking is available on the street in front of the cafe and there are several free parking lots within a two block radius. The front doors are disabled accessible with a button to push to allow complete independence for wheelchair, walker or cane users. The gender neutral bathroom is very large and accessible. I ordered a cold brew coffee that is some of the best I've had. I discovered they use Park Ave coffee. So very good!! They offer dairy free alternatives and they have a large selection of flavored syrups including a few sugar-free options. I ordered a cinnamon spiced muffin to go. It looked yummy. I was intrigued by several menu items that included the words "carmelized onion." That's all they have to say and I will be back. Scott, the owner, was incredibly warm and friendly. We enjoyed chatting with him and hearing about the roots of the business and the talented chef behind the scenes. The cafe is bright, airy with a good mix of people. Staff did a good job keeping it clean. There are probably not enough superlatives to describe this cafe. I'm looking forward to my next visit!

Pioneer Bakery Cafe is a breakfast and coffee spot located in Downtown Kirkwood. The location is convenient from a walking perspective but parking is limited and tightly-packed. The interior is cutely decorated but crowded. There's plenty of bakery items and breads on display, as well as a dessert/ice cream case. The food offerings are mostly breakfast items and some lunch sandwiches as well. The staff was friendly and got our order out quickly. I ordered a Croque Madame, which came with "pioneer potatoes". I thought it wasn't great, it was soggy and too salty. My Mom liked her Sonoma Chicken Salad Sandwich but wished it had more chicken in it. The biggest disappointment was the dirty soda. I got "The Other OG", which was a coconut soda that sounded good. After purchasing the worker actually informed me they just use Coke and add snow cone syrups. The drink was good but I paid extra for their "house soda". Scammy! All in all, not great, not bad, but definitely a disappointing experience.

    Short Rib Hash Plate

Overall, this is a fine place for a quick breakfast in downtown Kirkwood. The food came out very quickly, and although not everything was a hit, I recommend getting the short rib hash if that's up your alley! FOOD: We split a strawberry lemon pudding donut, which was tasty and a unique texture. Definitely puddingy! I got the meat quiche, which I'll say, was a little smaller than I had expected. The eggs were also a little runnier than I would want, but the taste was good. My partner got the short rib hash, and THAT'S the way to go! It was so filling and so flavorful. I definitely recommend that one. SERVICE: Counter ordering, like a lot of places nowadays with the iPad. Easy enough and food came very fast too. AMBIANCE: They have plenty of seating, both on the main floor and on the upper floor. Very well lit and a variation of booths and tables. PRICE: Total came out to $47 for two bottomless coffees, a pastry, and two entrees. The hash is worth the price but the quiche was a little less than expected.

My friend and I had a wonderful morning visiting Pioneer Bakery Cafe! The space itself is huge with plenty of seating downstairs in the front or upstairs in the back where it was a little quieter. It would be a fantastic place to work remotely and enjoy a pastry and drink. We placed our orders at the coffee bar but also saw that there was an ice cream bar across the room as well. We ordered caramel lattes, a caramelized onion and egg sandwich, and a s'mores cookie and headed upstairs to grab a seat. It was extremely busy while we were there but our orders came out relatively quickly despite the crowd. Our food and drinks were delicious! The lattes were sweet and creamy. My sandwich was to die for - I really enjoyed the caramelized onion and creamy ricotta cheese spread paired with egg on a fresh brioche bun! We had an all around good experience at Pioneer and I recommend giving it a visit!

Been wanting to try Pioneer Bakery for sometime but the hours never matched my schedule. Today things worked out!! The food was yummy and everything was delicious and seasoned well. The pancakes had a little hint of salt that balanced out the sweet. We sat in the loft area because the downstairs was super busy.

Pioneer is a job training bakery for the disabled
    John S.

Pioneer is a really successful partnership between MacArthur Bakery and Lafayette industries to create a job training space for the disabled. They have your typical bakery items, a breakfast menu and an ice cream counter. The food is on par with any typical chain bakery. The location is great in downtown kirkwood and the space itself is very nice with plenty of comfortable seating. You were going out to grab your coffee and muffin anyway, why not do it from a place that is creating good in this world. After a quick breakfast you can spend the day walking around kirkwood feeling like you did a good deed and all you had to do for that feeling was get a tasty treat.

The woman who took my order was kind and patient as I struggled to select which kind of bread I wanted from their plethora of options. Although I came in undecided between a sandwich and one of their pastries, I opted for the former and a chocolate chip cookie. After waiting all of five minutes, my name was called and I was on my way. While the presentation of the sandwich wasn't the most appealing it def made up for it in taste. The egg was whole but cooked to perfection. Although I asked for cheddar, I was given white cheddar instead, which I was surprised because this was not told to me when I ordered. The sandwich was good, but I'll need to choose a different bread next time since it was quite mushy. The cookie was good and something I'd compare to tollhouse. It was incredibly soft but again, I was thrown off by the semisweet, almost dark chocolate chips. Nevertheless, it was still good and I'd get it again. Overall, this place reminds me of a Des Peres version of La Bonne Bouche. It's got ample seating, tons of pastries, and other cafe items. I'll def return.

I was excited to finally try this place even though I was warned about the baklavas being too dry. Sadly that's true. I dint think they are made fresh. They lack syrupy. I understand they don't have much food traffic but cutting down on the types of baklava and freshly making them should solve that problem. Probably the second worst baklava I've had out here. I see why they make shakes though. Since they don't sell ans have leftover stock. We initially sat down to eat but it was so awkward that there's no music and so quiet. My husband said they don't vacuum between the chairs which were full of crumbs. We eventually got our food to go. The second issue is the food. We got a sucuk flatbread and ans egg pide. This is not a pide, it's just pizza bread. Cheese is mozzarella, should have been beyaz cheese. Middle eastern cuisine doesn't use this cheese. My egg was raw and just throw in a corner. Could have saved myself money by just getting domino's, at least my food would be cooked. If you want quality, try Balkan treat box, Aya Sofia or Garbanzo.
