I have been to this restaurant several times. The service is great. It is very small inside, there are some tables set up outside. The parking can be hard to find depending on the time of the day. The pastries and breads are always fresh, aromatic and delicious. The cookies are always delicious and freshly baked every day. I usually order the chicken salad sandwich and Colorado green chile. The bread to the sandwich bread is thick and the chicken salad is very delicious, with cranberries and nuts. The soup has a lot of veggies; beans,carrots, and broccoli. The base is always bland, each time I order the soup I am hoping it is more seasoned, but it is not, I usually season it myself. This is a nice place for both breakfast and lunch. I have heard such great things about this place, so I decided to stop in for a sweet treat on a Saturday afternoon while I was in the area! I was immediately greeted by the fantastic aroma of bread and baked goods. As you enter, there's a big shelf full of packaged soup mixes and cookie mixes available for purchase. I think they'd make such great gifts! I ended up getting a chocolate chip cookie to snack on later. It was the perfect treat! The kind employee who helped me with my cookie purchase asked if I had ever tried their bread. When I said no, he offered me some samples. I tried their cinnamon bread and cheddar bread. Both were incredible. The cinnamon bread tasted like dessert, and I will definitely be back to purchase a loaf. This is a delightful store with delicious loaves of bread, rolls, and a small selection of soups, granola, sandwiches and coffee. You can sit at one of the bistro tables inside or outside to enjoy your purchases. They offer samples of their wonderful white or seeded wheat bread, which helped when it came time for me to decide which bread to bring home. The girl behind the counter was both helpful and sweet. I love visiting this shop whenever I am in Kirkwood. On my most recent trip, I was able to sample this amazing cherry bread that they had baked and let me tell you, it was one of the most flavorful sweet breads I have ever had! I am still thinking about it and will get one again the next time they are baked. The workers are always so friendly and offer recommendations. While I also like their savory bread for sandwiches or just to snack on, I am a huge fan of their sweet breads and have never had a bad one. As soon as you walk by this shop, you can smell the smells and it's so inviting when you step inside. They have a variety of made to order breakfast items and a few grab-n-go. I opted for the powerbar and not disappointed one bit. Great Harvest is one of my favorite bakeries in Saint Louis. Perhaps it's nostalgia, or perhaps it's the free samples of fresh breads (who doesn't love samples??), but I always make an effort to visit Great Harvest when I'm in town. I'll give a special shout out to their cinnamon chip loaf: It's delicious on its own, but if toasted and spread with butter, it'll absolutely blow your mind. I'm sure it could make some great french toast as well, but in my house, the bread never lasts for more than a few hours! And if sweet isn't your preference, just about every loaf I've tried was delicious. You can't go wrong with anything you buy here. While there's much more competition in the sandwich/lunch food scene, they do some pretty solid sandwiches for lunch as well. Overall, this is an amazing bakery and I recommend their fresh bread (especially cinnamon chip!) to anyone. read more

Okay I see Great Harvest already has high marks on yelp, but I still feel the need to share my experience here today. I needed some afternoon coffee and the nearby coffee shop was closed, so I came here on a whim. I felt welcomed immediately with offers of bread samples. They have such a large selection of breads, scones, cookies, and also banana breads and biscotti were available. I was in heaven. The cashier who helped me was so sweet, patient, and considerate. The service was truly excellent. I didn't feel like I walked into a bakery business, i felt like I walked into grandma's kitchen. I can see this place get busy on a weekend morning but for a week day afternoon, business is steady and still have plenty of seats. read more

I ordered online and did curbside pickup and it was super convenient. The cinnamon swirl bread was huge, fluffy, sweet, and delicious for days after I picked it up. I sliced and toasted it for an amazing breakfast. And post-dinner snack. And before-bed dessert. I also picked up a turkey bacon club avocado sandwich (8.95). It had lots of turkey which I appreciated, but next time I'll try adding mayo or mustard to make it a little less dry. It doesn't come with any sides. Stopped in here to get a breakfast sandwich before waiting for my Amtrak to get here. This place is perfectly located in downtown Kirkwood with many surrounding shops to check out. You get the immediately yeast smell when you walk in and know fresh bread is being made. They make their bread fresh daily. The cashier wasn't very pleasant but everyone else was very nice I ordered the classic sandwich which unfortunately wasn't impressive. It's small, the bread was greasy which ruined the fresh bread I was washer for. Not sure if they added butter or if it was from the eggs and bacon. Personally, I think you are better off ordering the bread and making your own sandwich at home. read more

I mean...what's not to love they offer you freee samples (slices) of bread before you even order!! Easy street parking and also there is a parking lot in the back. Nice variety of breads, muffins, and cookies. Chose the cheddar garlic loaf. It heated up nicely in our oven. In the middle of the garlicky bread was a thick section of cheddar cheese. It's not like cheddar throughout the loaf like in one of those garlicky cheddar biscuits. Not sure if this was a win though. I think I would have preferred if the cheddar was in every bite rather than a stream of cheese. Either way it was great. Wish I had gotten other varieties. read more

Had a simple turkey and swiss sandwich and it really is one of the best I've had. Nothing fancy, but everything is very well done. Turkey is a sliced roasted turkey breast, no average deli meat. GH is SO good!!!! I recently learned about them from an event where they catered and started going on my lunch breaks in Kirkwood. I've had the turkey club and chicken salad. Both delicious and the standout really is the bread. It's so fresh and moist. I had no idea they offered free samples and got to try their red, white, and blue loaf. Besides the delicious bread and sandwiches, I also tried their chocolate chip oat cookie. I was super excited because I love oats in my choc chip cookies but they weren't my favorite. Maybe it would be better if I warmed it up a bit but I'd say skip. Besides that, everything has been a hit. So I wanted some breakfast but it was after 10:30 and I was craving a breakfast sandwich. So I did a quick search on yelp to see what was nearby and I found Harvest and I went to there online ordering Cafe section and the ordering was real easy and I picked the breakfast sandwich I wanted and a couple sweets from the bakery. Now the only hiccup was before I actually went there to pick my food up. They called me and told me that they were out of two of the bakery items that I wanted which kind of sucked. So they had me choose some replacement items instead. Also the young lady that helped me was really nice and easy going. All in all my experience at Harvest was pretty good. Their sandwich was great. The fruit bar was delicious. My only problem was that what I initially wanted wasn't in stock and when I went the second time it still wasn't in stock. But when I was there on my second visit they did let me sample some fresh bread and butter and it was very very good. As first timers, we looked at their menu online and chose the Breakfast Classic and the Breakfast Biscuit. The waitress was pleasant and made a nice decaf coffee. But, we won't ever order those sandwiches again. Very dry. Nothing special. The herb biscuit made both of us feel ill. Now, looking at the reviews, rather than going by the 4.3 star rating, we should have just chosen bread. Probably won't return. read more

A short time ago I ordered cinnamon rolls for my crew aboard the Amtrak train. My friend Bill agreed to pick them up. All is well They were among the best pastry I have ever encountered. Huge and covered in cream cheese frosting. Excellent Today I called and ordered the same thing. To be fair; the young man I spoke to indicated they did not sell the "big" ones anymore. After a short pause he agreed but said it would take time. No problem The items we were sold were not only not frosted but not even cinnamon rolls. The picture is what we found in the boxes. We ran into a super friendly guy behind the counter who offered us some samples. I have no recollection of the names of the bread (I was enamored by how delicious every freaking thing was), just a vivid memory of the sweet, salty, nutty, and earthy flavors that played in my mouth. HOLY MOSES. We DID walk out with 2 loaves of bread: The Dakota which was a wheat bread speckled with various nuts and seeds and The Blueberry Almond Crunch which is exactly what the title reads. I used to make the time to drive further for twofer Tuesdays (extra checks are magic). I used to love being surprised by which special breads, baguettes, or rolls were waiting for me. Alas, neither is available any more. Now I have to order 24 hours ahead, and no surprises. I guess a new owner's prerogative is to reduce costs by reducing service. I went in to just get some fresh sourdough bread, but since it was still baking I asked the owner where I could go for lunch? He said "we serve lunch here!" So we ordered lunch and it was awesome! I had the homemade soup and 1/2 sandwich on homemade bread. So good! Chicken salad tasted homemade with a fresh slice of tomato on homemade bread. Kind of a hidden gem in Kirkwood! I have been going to this place since I was a girl...back when they were at their old location with the old owners. The new owners have done a fantastic job of keeping the authenticity of the original! My favorite part of this store is their bread. It is freshly milled with fresh whole grains. They use wheat bought from family owned farms. One taste of the bread and you will appreciate the quality and freshness! My favorite is the honey wheat. But they also have nine grain, high 5 fiber, olive bread, asiago pesto, spinach feta, onion dill rye, apple cinnamon walnut and butterscotch pecan. Today I splurged and got the butterscotch pecan. It has just the right combo if butterscotch and pecan. It was 8.59 a loaf and worth every penny! I also am a big fan if their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are moist and huge!!! They are just delicious! I have company today and got a six pack for 8.60. Again, worth every penny! I also love their cinnamon rolls! You can just taste the freshness and like the cookies they are huge! I have never had their scones but they have Those as well! Today I tried their ham and Swiss on honey wheat. It was delicious!!!! It comes with Swiss cheese, spicy mustard, romaine lettuce, tomato, and onion. It was so big I had to split it with my hubby! I also like how they offer you a free slice of one if their breads and how you can see where they cook everything. They have a nice dining area and a little shop in the front where they sell other delicious items. The store is always clean and the staff is friendly. Stopped by on a whim. I am from out of town and it sounded good on this cold rainy day. The turkey alvacado on the Dakota bread was excellent but I was really let down by the barley soup. Especially for the price it did not seem made in house at all. It had the taste and consistency of a Campbell's can of ministeone with black beans added. It's pretty suspect when the carrots and potatoes are perfectly cubed and then mushy from sitting in liquid for so long! No worth the price! People were friendly. Service was fast.
