I liked their AYCE menu and had been wanting to come back, only to find out when we sat down that AYCE was no longer available. Huge bummer. We arrived around 9 PM and stood at the entrance for 3-5 minutes while multiple staff walked past us without any acknowledgment. Most tables were empty, so it wasn't clear whether we were supposed to seat ourselves. I eventually had to stop someone, who then brushed us off and grabbed someone else instead. After sitting down, I asked about AYCE and was told it was discontinued in October 2025. The waiter mentioned happy hour and said we could get an extra discount with a student ID, but when we showed our U.S. student IDs, they wouldn't accept them. Lame, but whatever. The price is acceptable during happy hour. The seats are uncomfortable, and the kitchen was very loud that night. The floor vibrated on and off throughout our meal. The biggest issue: bugs. They clearly know it's a problem since there's a small fan over the sauce station to keep the bugs away, but it didn't help. We found a dead bug in the sauce we made before dipping our food. There were also bugs flying over our food the entire time (see photos). That alone is unacceptable. Food came out almost instantly after ordering on our phones. Impressively fast. Everything tasted good, but I wouldn't order the spicy broth again. I know that's the style, but even at one-star spice it was extremely oily and overpowering for me. Another ongoing annoyance was staff constantly messing with our stove. On both visits, we ordered multiple broths. The spicy broth boiled aggressively because of all the oil, while the non-spicy broth barely simmered. We didn't like the spicy broth at all and just wanted the non-spicy one hot enough to actually cook food. Every time I turned up the heat, staff immediately turned it back down because the spicy broth was boiling. As a result, the non-spicy broth never properly boiled the entire meal, and our food was likely undercooked. Extremely frustrating. Last time we came, we got complimentary ice cream at the end. This time, we didn't. I assumed they stopped offering it, but based on other recent reviews, they just didn't give us one. My family of 5 walked in at 5:30pm and got seated right away because we were so early, but the place definitely got crowded as time went on. Ordering was very straightforward. Once we put our orders in, they were incredibly quick with bringing the food. The food was fresh and not frozen. The sauce bar cost per person but I feel like that's usual for many places now. The service was quick and they were great! There was a/c so it didn't feel overly hot with the hot pot. The tables were spaced out so we didn't feel cramped. We found this place on Yelp after the original place we wanted to go to was full and we didn't have reservations. I'm so glad we found it! You have to scan a QR code for the menu, so we did. The menu wasn't as easy to navigate, but luckily our waitress was very helpful and we decided to order two different broths, two different types of meat, noodles and some vegetables. We had tried a hotpot restaurant in our recent trip to Japan and we loved it so much we were excited to try this place. The napkins are in a little drawer in front of your seating area. Wanted to try a new hot pot place in this cold, rainy weather and stumbled across Xiao Long Kan! The decoration in and out resembled Northern China and deserves recognition!! I love how unique it is here because we don't find many restaurants with similar decor here. Service was decent. They weren't particularly attentive, but they did refill our pots a few time and was helpful when we asked. Food wise-- on the pricier side. However, most of the seafood was fresh and the meat melted in your mouth. We over ordered and the total-- after the bar price, tax and tips-- came to $207 for two people. We got a half and half broth for $22 (mushroom and pork bone as we both don't eat spicy). We got the deluxe boat that came with 4 different types of meat. The diced beef however.. super chewy and I wasn't a fan. The veggie mix was $22 and a me with a good variety. The noodles were great as always. I found the scallops to be less fresh than I expected. My favourite were the shrimp sashimi. It was super fresh.. but on the smaller side for $20. But it was probably my favourite dish that night :) The watermelon juice was $13 for the pitcher. This is my first time being here. Both my husband & I loved the decor and setting. Reminded us of Asia. All menu or digital, so make sure you've got a phone. We've ordered 2 types of beef, bamboo shoot, potato noodle as we are quite conservative. To sample more stuff, we ordered the new combo which was very well presented in a tray with 9 squares. It very cute with colourful bowls. The butter soup base, I've only asked for 2 chilli level but it was still spicy but manageable. The tomato soup base was excellent, the pork one is a bit lack of flavour. Food wise it's ok. The server was very helpful. They offered us an apron after seeing us struggling. However when we ask for a knife to cut some thick chunky beef apart, they weren't able to do so but at the end offered us a pair of scissors. Love this hotpot restaurant. They have a happy hour specials of beef being $1.99, and it's so worth it. You can't package the beef to go unless you pay full price, so don't order too much. First time here, I have heard a lot things about this place, mostly about how expensive it is, which is also why I have not visited this place till now. My friend called ahead and reserved for a table of two. Once I arrived, I got seated quickly after they scanned my temperature; I visited this place before the mask mandate was dropped by the province. Good thing that I went with a Chinese speaking friend cause their menu is all in Chinese. Friend suggested a combo for two, and translated the whole menu to me, including the type of broth we could get. We got the half-half pot, and got one non-spicy broth that is made of mostly mushroom, and the mild spicy one. The wagyu arrived first, so we tried in both the broth. The meat literally melt in my mouth. Meat and veggies were fresh, but nothing special. The non-spicy broth was really bland, but the spicy one was good. With the set, we also got plum juice and jelly like dessert, which I do not know what but it was good. We ended up paying about $70 per person. This was our first time eating here and the experience was very pleasant. Our waitress was very helpful and walked us through how to order and notated the popular items she would recommend. We ended up choosing the trio broth flavors along with Napa cabbage, quail eggs, pork belly, fish roe bags, bean curd, emoji mushroom, fish filet and the premium beef. The quality of the food was excellent as pictured below. We were checked in on a few times and our broth was topped off whenever it got too low. Our waitress recommended the yogurt which I thought was odd, BUT IT WAS SO DELICIOUS!! This yogurt was light and had a subtle sweet flavor- it was perfect for having after eating such a spicy broth. After being here and knowing how old this building is.... Holy heck cow, this hot pot place is AMAZING~!! The whole building was renovated from an old Korean Restaurant, and before that was a sushi resturant and EVEN BEFORE THAT was an old chinese restaurant.... So.. usually when you think of GREAT SERVICE, the food is just going to be subpar right? WELL NOT THIS PLACE!!! The food here is just extravagant. They offer tons of various types of soup bases too, and tons of various dishes! Maybe it was the baijou that is speaking to me that night, but the food is just EMMACULATE! We got the pork broth and the mushrooms broth with 2 different kinds of meat strips and handmade noodles. They also have a vegetable and sauce bar that you can use and we got green onions, peanut sauce, garlics, edamame and salt. It was outstanding!! Also their service was amazing, they were fast and efficient. The decoration was great, it felt like we were somewhere in China and not in Canada. Had a reservation for two and when we went in we were greeted in Mandarin. We laughed and told the workers we could not speak the language. Although we understand this is a Chinese restaurant, everyone continuously spoke to us in Mandarin and proceeded to give soup or other things very quickly before we could tell them we didn't understand. Not a big deal, just something to look out for! The servers were very kind and attentive. However, the food was not up to par. We ordered the house special soup as well as the pork rib soup. The house special soup had solid oil that was supposed to melt into the soup, a little unpleasant to see. In addition to that, it was kind of inedible due to the amount of oil. We can usually handle spice very well and ordered only a medium. It was extremely spicy so we just mixed in with our pork soup. We ordered the premium beef and hand made noodles along with other sides. The presentation of everything was very nice including the ambience, but the excessive amounts of oil overpowered the rest of our food. Sometimes, the best things are hidden in plain sight, and this was very much the case with Xiaolongkan Chinese Fondue. Despite its extravagantly themed interior, a large amount of seating, and prime location on Richmond's "Food Street," there wasn't a lot of information online. However, with the current COVID-19 restriction on indoor dining, we decided to visit their patio and celebrate Mother's Day with some hot pot. Here's an in-depth look at our experience - I hope this helps! ********** -- Communication, Ordering, and Service -- When dining at Xiaolongkan, one of the first things to keep in mind is the potential language barrier. If you don't know Chinese, I think you'll find the ordering process to be a slightly more difficult task. While they have an English menu, some of the listings don't make much sense, or the listing is in Chinese instead of English, so the experience can be a bit confusing. Currently, ordering is done online through the scanning of a QR code due to COVID-19 but, because I can't read Chinese (the initial landing page is solely in Chinese) and my phone couldn't receive the confirmation code from their online platform, we got a paper menu instead. In terms of service, I found the experience to be pretty good. The staff were polite overall, answered questions that we had, and were attentive in removing empty plates. ********** -- Sauce Station -- Like most other premium hot pot places, they also have a sauce station. I believe you're automatically charged for sauces, rather than it being an optional add-on, at $3.99 per person. They don't have the widest selection available, but they had all of the typical offerings. In addition to sauces, they also had orange slices and peanuts available as well. ********** -- Soup Base -- When it came to choosing and ordering the soup base, I found the selection to be somewhat confusing on paper, due to how everything was laid out. This was partly because there were fixed pairings for some options, while other options allowed for some choice in pairings. We ended up choosing, I believe, the only option that wasn't spicy: a fixed pairing of pork rib soup base and mushroom soup base for $19.99. ********** -- Meats -- Lamb Roll ($13.99) - The quality of the lamb was excellent. We also found that the meat was a little more thinly slice than other places, so the texture wasn't too tough. Pork Belly Slices ($8.99) - This was fantastic! In general, we don't normally enjoy pork belly but, because it was the only pork option available, we decided to try it anyways - we ended up liking it enough to place an additional order. Like the lamb, this was also very thinly sliced. Pork Intestines ($6.99) - We found these to be far too tough and chewy compared to other places, so I personally wouldn't recommend it. Luncheon Pork Meat ($6.99) - This was pretty standard. Much like the other cuts of meat, this was also thinly sliced. ********** -- Seafood -- Basa Fillet ($8.99) - This was one of the highlights for me and I would go back just for their Basa Fillet! This was extremely tasty, and you could tell that the fish was really fresh. Baby Cuttlefish ($8.99) - The Baby Cuttlefish was also very good. Cuttlefish is typically pretty tough to chew through, but this was just the right amount of chewiness and was also super fresh. Fish Noodles ($4.99) - These were amazing!! I'm not sure if other hot pot places have this, or if it's unique to this particular establishment, but we absolutely loved their fish noodles. They were super chewy and just absorbed all of the flavours from the soup base, making it even more flavourful. ********** -- Miscellaneous Dishes - Handmade Rice Cakes with Brown Sugar ($7.99) - These were nice and chewy. They were only slightly sweet from the brown sugar drizzle, so the sweetness wasn't overbearing at all. Not pictured, but we also got the fish tofu ($4.99), fried bean curd ($6.99), lettuce ($4.99), and quail eggs ($6.99). These were all pretty standard hot pot fare, though I would not order the fish tofu again, as I found the texture to be more stiff than bouncy. ********** -- Cost -- The bill for three people was around $200 with tip included which, if memory serves correct, is more than what we typically pay for at HaiDiLao (and we usually order scallops and oysters there as well). That being said, I also feel like quality has gone down significantly at HaiDiLao, and this place is of superior quality in comparison. ********* -- Conclusion -- If you haven't been to Xiaolongkan before, it's definitely worth checking out. I'd say it's a little more on the pricey side of hot pot restaurants, but they offer fresh and premium options that are worth the splurge. All in all, we had a great experience and we definitely see ourselves returning in the future. read more

The food quality and variety here are excellent. The menu contains tons of authentic Chinese items which are not always found in other hotpot restaurants. Plus, the price is reasonable (though not the cheapest) and it was easy to park in their lot (even being on Alexandra Rd which is notorious for difficult parking) As others have mentioned, it could be difficult for non-Chinese speakers. We did not have this issue since I went with Chinese-speaking friends but the staff were so kind that I would not be worried to come here by myself. During certain evenings we crave for some hot pot, been to quite a lot of hot pot places so decided to give this place a try since it is fairy new and seen some decent reviews on it. I know, more then often I have high doubts on a lot of reviews. I remember the first time I been to this restaurant was when it was used to be the old Jang Mo Jib, fast forward it to now, a new hot pot restaurant. The restaurant has its only parking lot so parking was easy but could be a bit cleaner and quite a lot of bugs cause surrounded with trees, etc. the entrance to the restaurant has 2 statues, one on each side. Inside the restaurant has that ambience of dining at a local restaurant in China, wooden tables and benches one and side and the middle, and to one side has little stalls with tables and chairs. The sauces and appetizers are self served. Here were the food we ordered; 1. 2 kinds of flavour soup base, pork bone soup and medium spicy soup base. Average just like most hot pot places. 2. Premium angus beef. It came layered around an ice cylinder with dry ice effect and an egg to dip the beef in before cooking. Besides the dry ice Smokey display effect, nothing special. 3. Superior wagyu beef. Wagyu beef is wagyu beef what can I say. Tender and fatty. 4. Thick cut beef slices. Tastes fresh and almost as good as the wagyu, I think this is better value then the wagyu beef. 5. Lamb rolls, I didn't quite get the nice lamb taste in this dish, but got to have my lamb cause they say," if you don't have lamb at a hotpot, you didn't have hot pot at all" 6. Live geoduck 2.5lbs. Pretty fresh and nicely prepared but not cheap either, $79.99/lb. 7. Quail eggs. Same as everywhere else 8. Frozen tofu and tofu puffs Once again same as everywhere else 9. Duck blood. Tasted fresh but I personally prefer pork blood more. 10. Vegetable platter and bamboo shoots, fresh with a pretty generous portion. 11. Handmade noodle, fresh and nice texture. 12. Pork belly slices, quite fresh and nice fatty taste. Overall, the service was decent and the food was okay, but definitely for the price you pay here, you can get better service and food at a few other higher end hot pot places. I personally would prefer Haidila or Dolar shop hot pot more. Including tip, paid $520 for 2 people and didn't even offer dessert like some tables got. I would give this place a honest 2 stars. I find the service here quite attentive and efficient so no complaints here. We ordered the soup base with 3 kinds : spicy Sichuan , bone broth and tomato. The spicy one is actually really spicy so beware ! My favourite is the tomato one which was super flavourful . Finally got to try this delicious spicy hotpot restaurant. We got there close to 7 on a Friday without a reservation, and it was about a 45 minutes wait, which was pretty reasonable for a weekend. The restaurant is very beautifully decorated and I love all the pretty booths. Food is AMAZING. Price is completely reasonable, and it is so nice they allow half-portions so I can order more varieties especially for smaller parties. The portions were large, the meats were very fresh and delicious and very great quality. Totally worth the price!! Service was fantastic as well. We kept getting offered snacks and drinks while we wait. There was free wifi and free charging stations so waiting doesn't feel that bad at all. Servers kept checking in with us throughout our meal and they cleared dirty dishes very quickly too. The cashier was sooo nice too; we bonded over our love for Chengdu. Really delicious Sichuan style spicy hot pot. Ordered: -tomato & spicy pot (non-spicy tomato soup comes in the middle, surrounded by a moat of spicy soup) -beef cubes -beef slices -tofu -shrimp paste -seaweed ribbons -deep fried pork (can be eaten by itself or put in the soup! delicious both ways!) -beef slices wrapped around okra -beancurd skin -wintermelon slices -fish (not sure which kind) You get your own mini canister of sesame oil, which you can mix with various sauces on the table (vinegar, soy sauce) along with green onions and cilantro. Soup and sauce are delicious; meats and seafood are super fresh; service was on point. The only drawback was the wait. We arrived at 7pm on a Monday and were seated around 8:15pm. There's snacks and seats while you wait, though, so go with people you like and make a night out of it. Be prepared to be immersed in a vapour bath of hot pot deliciousness that will linger long after you've left the restaurant. I met up with someone after my meal and he commented "you smell like food". May not be a huge deal if you're a very neat and/or dainty eater (I am neither), but my sweatshirt smells like hotpot a few days after the meal and I've got a few grease stains on the legs of the pants I wore to dinner. A friend recommended this place for dinner tonight. I hadn't heard of it before but apparently it's very popular already. I can see why! The traditional Chinese decor is SERIOUSLY cool, and even with just a table of 6 we got our own room. Photo ops abound. I can't imagine how much they spent on the renovation- it looks totally different than the old Korean restaurant that used to be there. The food wasn't bad either. We ordered a spicy pot with tomato soup base in the middle, which was delicious. Everything you put in it would come out with a nice, sweet tomato flavour (glass noodles yo). The spicy part of the pot on the other hand, was mouth numbingly spicy...but it is a szechuan hot pot after all. I managed to eat out of it by drenching my food in the provided sesame oil sauce...which I couldn't quite get used to at first, being used to the strong flavours of cantonese dips like sha cha, but after realizing how useful it was for toning down the spicy soup base, I get it. The beef quality really impressed me as well. We tried some kind of fatty beef, and a mini cube beef that was like teeny tiny, high quality sirloin steaks. Cook 'em medium rare and you'll see what I mean. Another interesting thing to order here is the suan nai (Chinese style yogurt?) that's mean to tone down the spice. It's a bit like greek yogurt but with it's own taste. Worth a try if you like yogurt and haven't had this kind before. Price-wise, I'd guess it's similar to other mainland Chinese chains like Liuyishou, so slightly on the high side, though my friend that eats there says this place is actually a little cheaper. :o read more

HIDDEN HOTPOT GEM IN RICHMOND. * I can't believe I've always driven past this place without a second of thought! This hotpot place is super tucked away. And a true hidden gem for sure! * The place isn't English friendly however it's perfect if you know Chinese! Their English menu has Chinese in it still so it may be a bit confusing. * Although majority of the soup base is spicy we opted for the non spicy soup base, and got pork bone soup and pepper pork stomach soup duo ($19.99) ~ very flavourful and peppery! The soup base was strong and delicious! I recommend getting these two for non spicy recommendation! The sauces on the side really complemented the soup base, There is 2 options; peanut mix and sesame oil mix ($8.97 - 3 people). * Deluxe Meat pLATTER ($60) ~ This was beautiful, served on a dragon boat plate, and it was huge. Not to mention the meat quality was so good. Best part the Wagyu beef cubes were super ultra tender, and soft. The beef slices were super nice and perfectly sliced. Nice combination and variety beef, and lamb. 100% recommend. * Fish Noodles ($4.99) ~ super unique never had something like this before, super bound and delicious. Imagine fish balls noodle style. * Base Fillet ($8.99) ~ Good portion, Id say the portion of this is bigger than most places for the price. The fillets are nicely cut too! * Pork belly ($8.99) ~ Super nice and tender, a classic hotpot must have! * Fish tofu ($4.99) ~ Cute fish shaped, and they are super bouncy. * Cabbage ($4.99) ~ There was a lot of cabbage in this, like holy! * Enoki Mushroom ($2.99) ~ good portion for the price. * Black fungus ($2.99) ~ good portion for price, very fresh. * 9/10 ~ I really like this place, such a hidden gem! I can see myself coming back! * 9/10 ~ The price is cheap compared to lots of places. I recommend coming here with someone who speaks and can read Chinese, as even their English menu is unreadable, as majority still consists of chinese. Luckily we were able to do it perfectly fine. My friend and I was in town just for good food in the middle of Feb. It was still early on before the pandemic and some of the waiter/waitresses were already wearing masks, which I appreciated. Food 5/5: The items are a bit expensive compare to ayce hotpot. However, their food selections are very fresh especially the meat. Their tomato soup base is soo flavorful. Their spicy soup base is super spicy for me, but my friend enjoyed it. Atmosphere 5/5: I love the interior design, I felt like I was in China. It look kinda fancy and the I was comfortable. They even have a box to put your clothes and personal items so it doesn't smell like hot pot. Their food's designs looks very pretty as well.
