This was my first visit to this business and I ordered two smoked chicken plates. The chicken and the side portions were so small for the price. The chicken was chopped up and appeared to be missing portions. The sides were very small in portions as well. Just don't seem that the portions of the dinner were enough. Fast, friendly, and delicious. Pippins has been around since the 80's, and I'd wager the place hasn't changed much in that much time. I stopped in for a quick lunch one day and I got exactly that. The lady at the counter was very friendly and made a good recommendation. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich along with some slaw and baked beans. These are my standard tests of a barbecue shop. When those three things are good, I am a happy man. I placed my order, and my food found me at my table a few minutes later. These folks were quick! The sandwich was delicious. It did not require other sauces, but there is a small selection available if you want to dress things up a bit. The slaw and the beans were everything I was hoping they'd be. They have recently improved the ambiance from 0 to 3 on a ten point scale. It didn't bother me before or now since I always take-out anyway. The smoked turkey is the best from anywhere around here. The sides are mostly so-so. I eat here at least once a month and have never had anything less than great smoked turkey. Service is usually pretty good but the takeaway line can get pretty long. This was our favorite Barbecue for 21 years, we first noticed the Coleslaw wasn't the same about a year ago. Then we noticed the last two times we had their barbecue it just wasn't the same, it just wasn't up to standard or the quality it used to be. Friendly staff, good food, but unfortunately, even with signs everywhere saying masks are required, two people waiting for food were not wearing masks. Since I'm caring for a sick parent with a compromised immune system, I was saddened. I know some folks here get combative when refused service, so I don't expect the young ladies working there to force compliance. Just know when you go, there may be selfish people not wearing masks. I will not be going back until the pandemic is over. Really is sad and I feel for the business. If they ever offer delivery, I will order that way. Ugh.... read more

The place is very clean, it's like walking into a a dinner at the Elks club (no offense to the Elks lodge). I have had the BBQ chicken, a must! I have ordered the smoked turkey, amazing how tender it is with the wonderful smoke flavor perfectly throughout the meat. Great chef's salad, yes salad, I wasn't that hungry. This salad could feed a family of five. Oh geez, maybe it is a shareable salad? Not sharing this and I'll happily tell the people looking at the dumb ass white girl eating a salad at this terrific BBQ?!!! Well this very fresh salad is filled with fresh veggies, but the cherry on top is the smoked turkey they put on top. I pretty much killed that salad. My husband has had all the meats on the menu, never once did he have a complaint. When we have friends or friends hubby raves about the food. We drove from stockbridge because I didn't get any on the Fourth of July. We were the first customers of the day. I wanted St. Louis Style ribs but they only had spare ribs. The portion was good but the standout dish was definitely the Brunswick Stew. Now that was delicious. Also, the Mac n cheese was different being that the noodles were wide with little grooves which held the sauce nicely. The hubby ordered brisket. He said it was good but not the best he's ever had. Not good. Potatoes in the potato salad were HARD. Beans were basically 10% bean, 90% molasses or sugar...whatever they used, but it wasn't good. The meat was just...meh. They use Brunswick stew out of a can and there is no substance to it. They have always used a can base but used to add onions and their BBQ meat to it. Not anymore. It's actually like a purée and it's disgusting. Ordered two pounds of BBQ for Christmas. There was an inch of fat at the bottom of each one pound container. The owner and his son work hard to try to keep this business open but neither one seem to even like their customers. Too many other BBQ places to go. See ya! read more

After a long day, I was craving some BBQ and was glad to have found this small hole-in-the-wall via Yelp. It was difficult to even find the place, but hoped it would be an amazing restaurant lost among all the other surrounding businesses. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed at all. It's very dingy and the staff was generally not very welcoming unless you were a regular. The food was nothing special and definitely forgettable. The only reason I've remembered this place is because I enjoy the rival BBQ place, Mad Dog's, down the street and always think of Pippins when I drive by. read more

For openers, they have pig plaques, or more accurately plaques of pigs from all perspectives: any way you'd like to look at a pig: from the front, the side or, well, you get the idea... and a newspaper certificate proclaiming Pippins to have been "Voted #1 Barbecue...." on the wall and that probably is more than you thought you wanted to know and nothing about how good the barbecue here really is. Actually you should get a pretty fair idea of how good its going to be when you pull up in front..., Pippins is a shack, no bars on the window and not in a terrible part of town, all of which usually mean good to great barbecue, but somehow you know this shack is going to be home to some good 'cue. The scent of hickory is in the air. And you'd be right if that's what you expect. Next door to a church (for overflow parking and where the pitmaster likely goes on Sunday andMondays when they are closed), around since 1986, Pippins has some very good barbecue at some very low prices and not a few eccentricities (aside from the pork plaques)... For one thing you order and pay at the counter and the nice young woman (a Twila if ever I saw one) gives you a number for when your order is ready . Three to five minutes later, Twila calls our number, thing is we are the only two folks in the p;lace... no one else, no bringing it to the table, no "your food's up," no "come and get it," just a loud "36." Thirty-six (as we were now known) had the chopped pork plate and baby back rib plate ($7.95 and $12.49), each with fries, slaw, Brunswick Stew, and bread (in a plastic bag - not sure why). The thing is this, the Pippins (surely they wouldn't have made a name like that up - there must be a Mr and Mrs Pippins behind this two store operation) apparently decided that Brunswick stew, fries and slaw go best when you eat their barbecue, because, like it or not, those are the sides you're going to get. No options. Sorry but it's stew, fries and slaw. Thed Brown Shoe Gourmet found their ribs (six of them plus one tip) to be excellent: good smoke flavor without being overwhelming and even the short end was moist. And a bargain for the price. The pork, including some from the charred outside, was also good. Some fat left for flavor and, like the ribs, a generous serving. Now a word about their mandatory sides: Good. Very good when it comes to those crinkly obviously frozen French fries, a Brunswick stew that rival.ed that of once Gold Standard Harold's and a finely chopped slaw that borders on world-class. Pippins has three sauces: sweet (too), mild (our choice) and Carolina for tourists who have made a wrong turn. Also a word about their tea: Excellent. Don't know how some folks make half and half (if you don't know, there's no sense asking) tea better than others, but Pippins has great tea. A stand alone shack with pig plaques on the wall, the scent ofr hickory in the air, red checkered vinyl table cloths and Twila taking your order and calling your number - you knew it was going to b e good and it was. And for 12 bucks, a tee shirt to adde to the collection. Pippins, in Conyers where we found them, and in Covington which might have been closer, very good 'cue with strong (albeit mandatory) sides, three decent sauces and best of class tea. Pippins is always good. Like most good barbecue joints they are closed Sunday and Monday. It is true hole in the wall. Don't let the outside fool you. The food is excellent. They have some great deals on the lunch plates. They have two basic sauces. The regular is more vinegar based and the rib sauce is a sweeter sauce. Both are great, it just depends on your preference. I had been a loyal customer of this establishment for nearly three years, and I would spend a generous amount of money each time that I went. It became abundantly clear to me today that my business was evidently not welcomed or appreciated. I understand that we're in the midst of an event that none of us welcomed or were even prepared to deal with (Covid-19 for the uninitiated), but that's no excuse to be rude or disrespectful to a paying customer. I had called previously to place an order, but no one answered. I was nearby, so I decided to swing through and see if they were open. Sure enough, they were open, with curbside service only. I called again after I parked, and I proceeded to place my order. When the gentleman that took my order (I'm not sure if he was the owner or not) asked me what type of vehicle I was driving, I told him and I also told him that I was already outside. Well at this point, I guess he thought it was appropriate to scold me for not calling ahead and that I was going to be placed in line and like everyone else (which I knew already) and that if I had called earlier, I wouldn't have had to wait. I explained to him that I HAD called ahead, BUT NOBODY ANSWERED THE PHONE...This guy proceeds to tell me that I have to be persistent and that "it's a busy time". I was not about to be scolded or talked to condescendingly. It wasn't necessarily what was said, but the nasty attitude in which it was delivered. I told the gentleman to cancel my order, and went about my business. It may not mean much to a person like him, I'm not sure if he was the owner or not, but because of him, Pippin's Barbecue in Conyers, Ga will no longer ever get any more of MY business. Never again. I didn't cause the current circumstances that we're ALL GOING THROUGH, and hopefully we'll get through this soon enough; but I have a choice where I spend my money, and it will no longer be with this establishment. read more
