The sweet potatoes it came with were really cold like it just defrosted and on the menu it said it comes with an egg and it did not. I was with people who have been at the establishment before and they noted that the portion sizes gotten smaller. I tried the Inca Kola and it was way too sweet, like liquid bubblegum don't know how people drink that. Came here on a rainy Friday night. We had just arrived at a timeshare after driving around 6 hours. We wanted a meal and didn't want to wait 2 hours for an opening. My wife is a fan of Peruvian food so we decided to give it a shot. I ended up ordering Mixto Ceviche while my wife went for the 1/2 Peruvian Chicken. The Peruvian Chicken is definitely the bargain meal but we planned to share our dishes. The appetizer (it looks like unpopped popcorn) is addictive; I kept nibbling on a few every minute. When the food arrived we were a bit disappointed in the temperature of my wife's chicken (barely warm); the flavors were fantastic but we expected it to be warmer. They also gave her plantains (though she did not order them) and they were fantastic. My Mixto Ceviche was very good but too spicy for my wife; as a result I ate it all. This is a full plate of food and I was stuffed. I felt the lime and spice combination was bit overwhelming and I can't say I loved my food. Maybe I don't like Peruvian food? If I came back (no plans to do that) I would get the Peruvian Chicken with plantains and another side. read more

This was our first experience with Peruvian food, so we made sure to tell the waitress that. She explained a couple of things, and brought out a plate with two little cups- one full of delicious corn nuts, and one full of a delicious green sauce. We just dumped the corn in and ate it with our forks. Hopefully that was right. She recommended the homemade chicha morado, a beverage made from purple corn, pineapple, and spices. It's so good, I've already downloaded two recipes so I can make it at home, though at $3.50 it's reasonable here! I ordered one of the lunch specials- Papa a la Huancaina. This is a traditional dish from Huancayo, a Peruvian mountain town. It's a "yellow cheese-infused sauce," which is mild but tasty, poured over a pile of potato slices. Well, they said "slices" but they're large chunks, which is fine by me! Peru INVENTED potatoes, and I am 100% here for them! I was a little disappointed that the menu says "accompanied with hard boiled egg and olives," and it was actually accompanied with half of a hard boiled egg and one olive. It was served at room temperature- not bad, just unexpected. Quite a good, if small, dish for $7. Mi Esposa got the empanadas del dia off the appetizer menu. $10 gets you two empanadas in your choice of chicken or steak, deep fried, hot, and delicious. We wrapped up the meal with a crema de botella (?), which is basically a Peruvian flan, but with a thicker, more caramel-like texture. It was an amazing taste, and worth the $5. Our total, with tax, was $27.85. I would have liked more food for that price, but I certainly can't take issue with the quality. We'll probably be back. read more

Walked in this place for the first time expecting a good experience. Especially after being wonderfully greeted, as we walked in, by Andrea. We were seated right away but were only told someone will be right with us. No, menus were given, no silverware, nothing. We didn't think anything of it as we figured our waitress would be right with us. Five minutes passed, then about 10 and we kept seeing (several) waitresses pass by, including Andrea that sat us down, but no one acknowledged us. I finally got the attention of one of the waitresses and asked if we could get two waters with lime (or lemon) and informed her we had not been helped. She did give us silverware and told us she'd be right back then stepped away. We thought we'd be serviced now. While waiting for our waters to arrive, We noticed the same was happening to other families that arrived after us. We were a bit surprised this was happening on slow weeknight with plenty of staff not too many families in. Also the place had pretty good reviews, which convinced us to check it out in the first place. After about another 13 minutes of waiting for our waters to be brought out we decided to just leave. I couldn't even give you my honest opinion about the food because sadly, our experience didn't reach that point. Coming from a strong hospitality background I can honestly say this place was not it! No hospitality experience is needed to know the lack of service and attention to the clientele was lacking immensely. I hope this place improves in hospitality for others to provide a way better experience here but I will not be returning to find out. read more

I had extremely high hopes for this place. I was so excited to see so many authentic dishes and drinks that I would eat during my time in Peru. The atmosphere looked very welcoming and family friendly! The service was extremely horrible as we had to keep trying to get our waitress' attention but she blatantly ignored us and proceeded to check on other tables. It took us about 20 minutes to get our pisco sours as other folk who ordered after us got theirs before us. After we received our drinks, we finally placed our order and didn't see our waitress again. After waiting for an hour we said something and they had said it was extremely busy and proceeded to bring out other people's food as they ordered after we did. There were 4 other tables prior to us arriving as to which 2 already had their food at their tables. 3 tables arrived after us and 2 received theirs before we did. The waitress also proceeded to make excuses as to why ours isn't prepared yet. I wanted to wait a little longer so that there were some redeeming qualities about this place, but instead we had left without eating anything. maybe next time it will be better :) The empanadas we're good and the chicha morada was great as well! Since our last few visits, they have made some very pleasing changes in lighting and decor. It's so much more of a comfortable vibe now, and more like a restaurant instead of a cafeteria. So much better! We have eaten here a number of times for dates and with other adults, but this time we brought the kids. They loved the aji de gallina, as expected. The rotisserie chicken (on the back of the menu) was very over cooked and dry, which was a huge disappointment, and the rice was too peppery (black pepper) for the kids but we loved it. The kids really liked the oyster-sauce-based tallarines saltado. The kids ordered it with chicken but I think it would have been better with steak. Chicha morada with rum has been my go-to drink for several visits, or a pisco sour, but this time I went with a different cocktail and was not disappointed. All in all they are making delicious food, great strides in ambiance, and are often short handed like most restaurant at the moment...so bring your palate AND your patience. SORELY DISAPPOINTED!!! Went out of our way on a trip from NC to come here and they weren't open (when their website and sign on business said they would be)! Ended up eating appetizers across the street only to glance up and notice people going into P 51s. We went in and ordered a pisco sour (it's in their name after all) and the ceviche mixto. Later found out that our server was the fall guy for their late opening. Apparently he was the only person including the owner who had a key to the joint?!?!? Beyond odd and barely believable. The drink was very pretty in terms of presentation but just OK. The ceviche was seriously subpar. Way, WAY too salty to the point of swelling the fingers of both myself and my dining companion. Avoid this place if possible. Came in on a Friday evening around 10 o'clock to grab a drink with my boyfriend so we could sit outside and listen to the karaoke. Walked inside and there was one single table. Place is extremely bright, no mood lighting, and the furniture is the same as the restaurant before it. We walked over to the bar and the bartender greeted us with a smile. Being a Latin restaurant, I figured they'd serve all sorts of Latin inspired drinks so I asked for a mojito. I got a bewildered look by the bartender and was told they don't make mojitos, then pulled the drink menu and told me "we only have these drinks." We should have left right then but I got excited when I saw a pisco drink on the menu so I asked for it. I also asked for Diet Coke instead of regular coke, to which the bartender pointed to the drink machine behind us and said "we don't have diet." Second red flag. Should have left. The bartender proceeded to pour one small shot of pisco onto a tall glass and then walked from behind the bar over to the drink machine and filled my glass with coke. The drink called for a lime wedge which they also didn't have as the bartender walked to the kitchen and came back with a little ramekin full of lime juice and poured it in. I basically got charged $11 for a glass of coke with synthetic lime juice and a splash of pisco. I'm never setting foot in this place again. The karaoke outside was awful. Too loud to carry a conversation, drunk patrons blasting their voice on the mic and mismatched patio furniture. If the lighting inside was a bit dimmer, the management was more on top of things and the drinks were decent, this place would be a hit. But it isn't and it's not. There are tons of other establishments in Newtown that are 1000x better than this place. Steer clear. read more

It is with sadness that I can't give Pisco 51 more than 3 stars. It is sad because as a peruvian I am always in search of good peruvian restaurants and I want people to enjoy the best of our gastronomy, unfortunately they really missed the mark. For starters even the water tasted funny and they told me that sometimes the filter doesn't really work well. At least they were nice enough to give us a complimentary "Maracuya " and "chicha morada" juice. The menu selection looked appealing so we decided to order a los of dishes. None of them was really good, just ok, but because the dishes are very expensive I was expecting very good quality and flavor. I don't mind a high price tag but it needs to match the food. I could get mediocre food anywhere for half the price. I've had similar experiences in other places and the bottom line most of the time the chef is not Peruvian, just a sous chef who learned some peruvian cuisine at some point. I won't be coming back. The owners Renee and John are extremely fantastic hosts. I was a customer of el patio's over the summer and Renee mentioned she remembered me. They've recently renovated the restaurant to serve Peruvian cuisine. We devoured the aguadito (house soup) - perfect for a cold day, empanadas (chicken/cheese and beef/cheese) and chauffa (chicken and fried rice dish), accompanied with the original pisco sours. Stumbled upon Pisco 51 after the neighboring Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants were closed. What kismet, because we discovered an absolute gem. Chef Pedro, Esmeralda, and the rest of their family just moved up from Miami to retool a middling Mexican restaurant into a Peruvian marvel. Their purple corn Chicha morada was fresh, deeply colored, and properly balanced. And my Chicha / Pisco Sour, spritzed with aromatic bitters, was aesthetic and delicious. It was so nice to sip on our drinks while munching on still-warm toasted Chulpe corn with a perfect salty crunch. Chef's Causa rellena, a Peruvian staple, was friggin brilliant. Layered, textured, beautifully plated, and tasty beyond all get out. Our Ceviche Mixto was enough to share amongst three of us and the rococo pepper gave the "juice" an inviting red hue and tempered spiciness. Note: the calamari was battered in the chef's own corn starch blend, which greatly pleased my gluten free-guests. Our last dish was the Lomo Saltado. When's the last time you had a perfectly cooked steak at lunch?? Juicy, tender, and plentiful. A bright, sunny-side-up egg sat atop the rice and all of it was flanked by hand-cut fries served with two sauces that beg for dipping. All in all, between the random discovery, the generous hospitality, and the gorgeous food, it was a damn sublime experience - in the middle of an idle Thursday. My wife and I, along with another couple, were excited to experience dinner at Pisco 51 for the first time. The food was to die for! Terrific food in every respect --showcasing the marvelous ways Peruvian cuisine fuses South American and Asian techniques and ingredients. Having said that . . . All of us are aware that all new restaurants have rough start-ups; Pisco was no exception. We made reservations for last Saturday night, but when we arrived there was no record of it and the restaurant was quite busy. The waitstaff began to set up a table quickly, but we saw that our friends had already been seated, so we joined them. It was clear that restaurant was short-staffed and unprepared for the the Valentine weekend crowd. Our server, Naomi, was obviously working very hard but the process of getting menus, getting drinks and ordering food was very, very slow. Both couples ordered cocktails, appetizers and main courses. The drinks arrived and after some time, the first item that made it to the table was a single main course. Then an appetizer arrived and randomly the rest of the items. Naomi cheerfully did her best with a process that clearly was broken. Now the verdict: it is definitely worth going to! A big thank you to Naomi and Chef Pedro for showing us gracious hospitality in light of the issues and bringing us wonderful, delicious Peruvian cuisine! We'll be back! OK, so we had a sort of "meh" experience last week at Pisco 51. Not awful, just so so. The food was kind of hit and miss. Both my veggie chaufa and my empanadas were way too greasy, but the yuca was definitely on point. I'm giving four stars simply because the staff was so polite and gracious. That makes a difference for me, and it makes me want to come back to this place at some point and give them another shot. Every chef has an off night once in a while. read more
