Pita pockets in Amherst is the best. i have never had a bad meal here, and i come often. i usually get a chicken and falafel combo pocket and it's 10/10 every time. the gyros is also very good. the guy that runs the place is a great guy, he is always very friendly when i come in and obviously takes pride in his work (food). the baklava is also very good, a great sweet treat after a pocket. i highly recommend this restaurant. if you haven't been here, definitely give it a go read more

This place is AMAZING! They have a vegan falafel, and I highly recommend you add french fries to your sandwich!!! OMG! The owners are super nice and give free falafel with tahini while you wait if it's not too busy. They also give sandwiches to homeless locals. So sweet. It's seriously the best falafel I've ever had. Had the kafta kabob pocket (beef), the spicy version. I think the spice does add to the flavor and doesn't overwhelmingly hurt the tongue. Best falafel pocket I've had ever!! The place is small and cozy. The man behind the counter was so friendly and welcoming. He asked me if it was my first time here and I said Yes so He gave me a fresh falafel. It came time to pay and I handed over my cc. He said they only accepted cash. I quickly asked where's the nearest ATM and he told me not to worry about it, that I could pass by whenever I'm around town again and if not well then we see each other in heaven. Lol Mind you I had told him earlier that I'm not from around the area and that I was only here for business. He was just so nice and knows how to take care of his customers. Great place! We were visiting Amherst for the day and stopped in for a quick bite. The folks who work here are super nice. Plus they understand dietary restrictions, and vegan items are clearly labeled on the menu. In fact, when I told them that I was vegan, the man who was making my wrap said "I love spoiling vegans" and added some goodies to my meal (grape leaves, extra hummus). That was after they already gave us a few falafels to munch on while we waited to order. The food was great, and the portions are huge. The inside is very clean, and the owners were so friendly and welcoming. This should be a must for anyone who loves a fulfilling, fresh lunch (and vegetarians). Last but not least, their deserts are absolutely to die for. If you're not an overindulgent, American-style sweet eater like myself, you will love their baklava selection. Light and airy but with a nutty smooth filling and steeped in honey. It's the perfect ending to this perfect meal. I decided to try this place because of the awesome yelp reviews (5 stars with 50 reviews!) and because I love falafel, gyro, and other Mediterranean flavors. I am happy to report that this place did not disappoint! I ordered a Turbo Pocket (falafel, chicken, gyro) with everything in it. It was an enormous wrap; easily two servings. There were a lot of fresh veggies to choose from and the meat was put on the grill when I ordered it (to heat it up). My favorite veggie filling is the pickled turnips - they're so good and offer a nice crunch! The owner who made my wrap was very friendly and very nice. The only con about this place is that it's cash only, but I'm not going to dock any rating for that - the food is just AMAZING. Just make sure you hit the ATM before coming! read more

On my dying day if someone asks me what I want my final meal to be I would say "I want a falaffel pocket from Pita Pockets and I want to go there because the staff is amazing." This is my favorite place for falafel in the Pioneer Valley! It's a no-frills little space where you order at the counter and there are a few tables if you want to eat in. They do the indented, sort of donut-shaped falafels that I've only ever seen at East Side Pockets in Providence, and it turns out that the owner's cousin owns that place. They are excellent, freshly made and crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and well-seasoned. The indentation makes the crispy to soft ratio really perfect. The standard falafel (and i think any other pocket sandwich) comes with hummus, banana peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, tahini, cucumber, hot, medium or mild pepper sauce, and awesome purple pickled turnips. There are a few other toppings you can opt for at no extra charge, like tzatziki (yogurt sauce with cucumbers) and feta. All the toppings are fresh and delicious. The family (mother, father and son) who run the place are mega-friendly, funny, and always jovial, offering samples of falafel (even when you have already ordered falafel!), baklava, grilled meats, grape leaves, etc. And they know what "vegan" means, which is great for me! I will say that their grape leaves were just OK, nothing special. And I've never ordered anything but falafel, although people I've been with have really enjoyed some of their chicken platters, baba ganoush, and other things. I've never had TOO long of a wait but I think the friendliness sometimes makes the preparation time for the food a little longer than it needs to be, and this place gets busy at meal times, so it's not always a super quick option. Incredible spot. I'll just cut to the chase. Here's what I look for in a quick, inexpensive restaurant: Food: 5+/5 - Honestly, some of the best falafel I've ever had. Made fresh to order (the fryer is directly behind the cash register), so it's hot when you take your first, second, and tenth bite. Much like a burrito place, you order your "base" first (ex: Chicken Kabob Pocket), then add toppings later. The veggies are fresh, the options are diverse, and because I cannot eat dairy there is an excellent "secret sauce" (sesame/tahini) that serves as an alternative to traditional tzatziki. It is delicious. Price: 4.5/5 - $6 for Falafel Pocket, $7 for Chicken Kabob Pocket. Both options are incredibly filling, and definitely worth the price. I need a lot of food when I eat, and this delivers. I deduct half a star because it is cash/check only, although I realize every penny counts for a small establishment. (#^&% AMEX anyway) Atmosphere: 5/5 - I expect a place like this to feel intimate and personal, and it absolutely does. The man who presumably owns the joint is very affable, and quick to make recommendations. The students have discovered this place, so it can get busy and there may be a wait but, have patience, it will be rewarded. The wraps are sufficiently filling for all but the most hungry of diners (or football players in training), and the plates are both take out and eat in with a very tasty blend or rice and lentils with herbs (jedra). I came in with a group of 5. We got our food quickly and the two men up front were very friendly and accommodating, offering samples of food we had not yet tried. The chicken was delicious. And the falafel was some of the best I've had. One reviewer remarked that any NYC street car could do better, but I disagree. Their falafel is made almost in the shape of a donut so you get lots more crispy outside in every piece and you don't get that dense dry heavy center that's usually a part of even NYC falafel. So happy this is new restaurant arrived. Amherst, while not a food desert, can always use more variety, especially when well-done! Owners are super-sweet, generous with samples and portions, and the food spread, desserts, etc., are nicer than many in falafel places. Falafel is as fresh as can be, crispy, soft, flavorful. The tahini and hummus are really nice. One reviewer said it's more of a fast-food place... I'd say that the decor tips that way, but it feels more sweet and intimate than that.
