It was close to closing time but the line quickly grew long (kudos to the employee who was working the front alone!). Store was clean and interior design was simple and modern. I got the pistachio + chocolate hazelnut and still think about it. The nutty flavor and creamy texture were perfection. RTC is a bit out of the way for me but we're already planning a trip to go back this weekend so I can get my gelato fix. Highly recommend! read more

For what seams like a sample size cup with two miniature scoops costs a little under $10. The quality and taste of the gelato was mediocre at best. The Food: For this visit, I went with a Pineapple Sorbet! I love fruity flavors, so pineapple sounded delicious to me at the time. The sorbet was flavorful and not too sweet! Perfect amount and the scoops they give are fair. The Service: Staff is always friendly and attentive when you walk in. Lines weren't long, but even if there were, it'll breeze by fast. This is some of the best gelato I've had in the NoVa! You know it's a legit place when there's no gelato mountains in sight. The staff was so patient with me and my friends as we spent eons trying to decide what flavors we wanted. FYI getting 2 flavors in a cone is the exact same cost as getting 1 flavor in a regular cup. I ultimately decided on the stracciatella and pistachio in a cone. They were exactly what I expected from good quality gelato; creamy, stretchy, and naturally colored. The pistachio had that classically earthy nutty flavor to it and the stracciatella had a good amount of chocolate chips running through it. There is some seating inside, but there's also a fair bit of outdoor seating for nicer days. read more

The best post ice skating rink treat at Reston Town Center! Sure Starbucks is convenient but when you visit Pitango Gelato you are supporting a local, family-owned business! The boy and I stopped in for an American and latte and was happy to find that they use Vigilante beans to make their brews. They made my daughter a hot cocoa, which honestly was so good that I ended up drinking half for myself! Their hot cocoa consistently gets voted best in the city -- it's so thick you can almost eat it with a spoon! The staff was super friendly -- when they saw my daughter eyeing the gelato counter while we were wating for our drinks they did not hesitate to offer her a few little spoons to taste. It can be a bit pricey ($7.25 for a small dish with 2 flavors; $8.75 for a medium/large dish with 3 flavors), but is worth an occasional splurge. They have many different flavors which are listed on the right side. If the line is not too long, you can sample different flavors. I enjoyed a medium large dish with a mix of chocolate, their traditional base flavor (fior di latte), and vanilla chocolate chip (stracciatella). It was really refreshing on a hot day. Payment is by credit card or phone only (no cash is accepted). You can get a glass or water to accompany your gelato or coffee. On the outside, they have a few seats, but the interior also has a few small tables. Pitango Gelato is a little tricky find. It's about 1.5 blocks west of the skating rink. It's nestled the alleyway between Morton's Steakhouse and Mon Ami Gabi. read more

Gelato is cool now, I've been led to believe. Problem is, I don't really know that much about it. PG fits squarely within the new trendiness of this old dessert style. The Reston Town Center has hosted NOVA familes and their shopping needs for several decades now. For those who have not seen, it's a large mall with mostly outdoor-facing, village style shopping as has been trendy in the last while. Nobody wants to shlep around a dark indoor mall anymore. It buzzes with that pleasant, suburban, well-maintained energy. There is a central fountain and a bandstand for summer concerts. Everyone's children are above average. The design language is of interest here. Ice cream shops tend to go only one of two directions - 1. Classic subway/industrial dairy, 2. Back-to-the-farm, with cows and stuff. Some shops do both. Gelato shops also sometimes push the old-country Italian vibe. In this case, the whole thing was pretty sleek and modern, with lots of wood, metal trim, and splashes of color (see pictures). The dining room was really spacious for a product that doesn't require very much room to consume. Staff were of course friendly and happy to explain the product. Had a mint lemonade float with raspberry sorbet - yes, it was very minty - the lemonade had been poured from the bottom dregs of a very large carafe, and so the mintiness was concentrated. This is my preference, honestly. The sorbet was high quality, I think. Very fruity. It was a very nice snack while walking around on a hot night. read more

This is one of my dependable spots for gelato. The portions are smaller than ice cream scoops, which is standard for a traditional gelato as it is much richer in flavor. I really love the dark chocolate and coffee flavors but enjoy getting the seasonal flavors, like rhubarb, whenever possible. The lines do get long in the warmer months after dinner hours, so be prepared to wait. You can also get a pint to go if you'd prefer to enjoy at home. read more

In good conscience, I can't give this shop rave reviews. I wavered on 3 or 2 stars...ultimately this is a 2 star for me. Highly unlikely that I'll be back. Review caveat: this review is based on my ordering cups of gelato only. Last week in the dead of winter, we craved frozen custard. Not ice cream. Frozen custard. It was late - 830PM. Our go-to's were not an option: Rita's - closed for the season. Abbott's - we wouldn't get there before closing. Cold Stone, Baskin Robbins would be a definite NO. Pitango open till 10PM. Score. Gelato, not custard - we would make an exception this time. We hopped in the car and headed to Reston Town Center. I knew that Pitango wouldn't be cheap - I've been there before a couple times in the past years, again just for gelato. But I figured it would be worth the field trip to tame the craving. As we entered the shop, I saw the sample cup sizes with prices pasted on the cups sitting on the counter - WOAH! I did a double take! I wish I had taken a pic to post (someone pls do because surprisingly, there are no pics of the cups and prices in Yelp!). $6 FOR A REGULAR SIZED CUP! WT?! We were there now so it didn't make sense to turn around and walk out. No other options. Call us captive customers. So we ordered 3 cups and paid $21+ FOR JUST 3 SMALL CUPS OF GELATO. The positives? Our server was super sweet. It's not his fault he's working at a boutique frozen treat shop fit for 5th Avenue! He was super knowledgeable and helped us pick our flavors. I also liked hearing that the fruit gelatos are made up 60%, did he say?, of the actual fruit itself. Point being: it's REAL fruit flavor. - and the fruity gelatos DID taste high end. I never remembered Pitango prices being that high. I get that it's covid and businesses are hurting. You all know I'm a fan of small business establishments. But jacking up prices TO THAT LEVEL isn't going to instill customer loyalty imho. That was a turnoff in a huge way, I'm sorry. Also, it's telling that if you try to do a quick online search for cup pricing for Pitango, you find nothing. Hmmmmm. Even Pitango's website is no help. What are you trying to hide Pitango? Great service, delicious taste and a late closing time are all thumbs ups but gouging prices are what has me giving this place 2 stars. Curious to see if, as the weather gets warmer and more people start to come out for frozen treats, if this place will survive and/or if prices will come down. read more
