We made a quick stop here before our 6+ hour drive back to NC. After visiting the Manassas battle field and walking around outside for a few hours, we decided ice cream was the perfect way to cool off and start our little road trip. This is a cute shop located just off the freeway and in a small business complex with plenty of parking. Bonus points for the adjacent coffee/bakery shop, where we grabbed an Americano for the road as well. Ice cream was good but not great. We had the mint chip ice cream, but there was something that kept me from giving it 5 stars, like it was more sugary than creamy? The workers though are fantastic, teenagers that give decent sized scoops to kids and really put on the sprinkles when asked. My child got the cookies and cream ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and absolutely loved it. Picnic tables outside as well as indoor seating. Ambiance was a nice on the inside, a relaxed atmosphere. Actual pieces of carrot cake mixed into the ice cream would've been better. The butter pecan ice cream was ok, but not flavorful. When I was in the Virginia Tech campus, the Kroger there had organic milk in glass containers. They were my favorite milk ever back in college. After a while, I forgot about them. UNTIL NOW at Moo Thru! They sell these same organic milk in the same container. I switched my milk source from Costco to Moo Thru entirely. It's not cheap by any means but I do feel the different taste so I'm sticking with it. $6 for milk. $3 for a glass container the very first time you buy. So, it'll be $9 per container for your first run. Then, you can bring back the containers and swap them for just $6. I know I'm reviewing milk at the ice cream shop but my friend, their milk is top shelf. That's why their ice cream is so good in the first place. It's dangerous though because every milk run, I end up with at least a giant scoop! It's a busy place. Every time I came, there was at least some crowd. Small parking right out front. People come and go quickly so it's not a problem. There's a bigger indoor space next to the serving area if you prefer to sit indoors. All I have to say is that if you haven't been here, you need to check it out ASAP! read more

I brought my daughter here for a treat after buying her ballet shoes a few doors down at The Cinnamon Tree. My daughter ordered 1 scoop of dark chocolate on a cake cone. I sampled the blackberry which was a beautiful color and remarkable. I don't have particularly refined taste buds, but could tell this ice cream is high quality - very creamy. The owner is really friendly and still chatted with me even though they were busy. It's a small store so be prepared to wait, but you shouldn't be rushing an ice cream treat anyway! It's also pricey -$6.50 for a scoop of dark chocolate (there's a surcharge on this flavor due to ingredient prices) - but happy to support local especially for high quality. Inside are 4 tables and two picnic tables outside. While nice with an overflow crowd it was hard to get around. Not sure how coffee shop patrons might like the chaos of the ice cream shop... time will only tell! Moo Thru has both soft serve and regular ice cream. On this visit hubby got his standard vanilla.. I opted for two scoops... one blackberry and one called Holstein which is vanilla with large chocolate chunks... ice cream was excellent... hubby said less sweet than Brusters which is his preference! but let's chat about their scooping,,, Depending on who scoops you might be disappointed... my two scoops were overly generous. Another family who we shared the outside picnic tables with us were laughing as their banana split had two bananas instead of the normal one split down the middle. Me thinks someone looking at a pic to create and not knowing the banana should be cut. Other cups I saw had what looked to be half scoops when comparing to mine... Great tasting ice cream that supports local dairy farmers. We are all in for that! Stopped in to enjoy soft serve cones on a very hot day (we were relieved to be in out of the oppressive heat). Vanilla was flavorful and luxurious tasting. My spouse enjoyed a chocolate soft serve cone with no complaints. The selected cone size was "small" but was a very generous portion/serving. Service was polite and efficient, but not friendly. We got the vibe - "I'm a teenager who's miserable to have to work for money." The store inside showed that attitude. Dirty tables and food mess (sprinkles) on the floor. This condition existed, while 2 teenaged employees had their heads down into their phones. We wanted to say "put the phones away and cheer up - it's an ice cream shop." For the price paid, not the cheapest but worth every penny. Looked at their many flavors and we ordered 2 double scoops, of a favorite flavor and something we wanted to try. All of the ice cream was as we imagined with the color and flavor consistent throughout each spoonful, no ice chips or unexpected items in the ice cream, each scoop had a very rich mouth feel and was not mealy. we came by this place on 07/21 - National Ice Cream Day! I was so excited for my daughter to try this spot as I've been trying to find the time to bring her over. I've been to the Remington location, but it's been so long since I've been to a Moo Thru, this was quite the treat! she picked a scoop of cotton candy with rainbow sprinkles. I also ordered a chocolate soft serve with chocolate sprinkles (but they gave me rainbow), a scoop of mint chocolate chip & one scoop of pineapple sorbet. it was super busy as they were giving 15% off all treats that day. it took about 10 minutes for our order to come out. mint chocolate chip was real light on flavor - would've appreciated a more minty flavor. pineapple sorbet had real pineapples in it! the chocolate soft serve was light & delicious. the sprinkles was the perfect addition in my opinion. I am so thrilled there is a Moo Thru closer to DC! We used to stop at the more remote stores on our way to Charlottesville in the past. It's close to Frying Pan Farm, so it makes for a great day at the farm for families, followed by ice cream. I love the cookies & cream and cookie dough flavors. The ice cream tastes very fresh and flavorful! Service is friendly and fast. Plenty of casual seating, with a connection to a coffee shop. Easy parking in front. The ice cream is "yum" per my kids and I agree! There's so many great flavors but our faves are Strawberry and mint chocolate chip! The lemon sorbet is also refreshing in the summer. Lines can be long in the summer and it gets crowded on holidays but all worth the wait for the creamy goodness! They are also pretty generous even for single scoops. It is a very basic ice cream establishment that does not possess any unique or distinguishing traits when it comes to the execution,, ingredients, or type of frozen desserts. Within the constraints of the concept, it is okay; but fairly cookie cutter and pedestrian. The prices are expected for the area, but I would be remiss to not note that, for the prices as they are tendered, I would expect something either of superior quality or particular and distinct idiosyncrasy. Accordingly, until something changes, I would consider this place to fall under the category of befuddlingly popular; and missable. Lastly, the sugar content is too high relative to the economic utility of caloric utilization. This place is not a health-oriented alternative; and I accordingly have a hard time justifying it as an option as opposed to the manifold amazing sweets shops and cafes in the area. read more

UPDATE - happy to report that my last review is now outdated. The store has opened and is busy with customers looking for an alternative to the bigger chains. We stopped by last weekend. Everyone in the family was very happy with the menu and flavor selections. The ice cream is the tasty, creamy goodness you expect. It harkens back to the local dairy ice cream shops of yesteryear (mid to late 20th century) The cost seems a bit on the (premium) high side, but everything is these days. The only complaint from our party was that we wished they had "1 scoop sundaes". The menu lists the minimum as 2 scoops. Both people that ordered sundaes didn't finish because it was "just too much." Great service and staff - super clean inside and out. Very easy to find and close to everything - this is a great spot! Service was fast and the ice cream was very good. It wasn't the best ever but they had some cool flavors and some unique cones, etc. it was VERY good. It's the best ice cream in Herndon. There is a Gelato place in Reston Town Center that is also good but assuredly give Moo Thru a try! A zillion kids and teens were there so I bet kids love the place. My fiancé and I love Moo Thru and go once a week for a treat. We've had nothing but good service UNTIL last night (9/19). I was extremely disappointed by what I witnessed. I ordered a classic banana split and then had to listen to the staff behind the counter (about 4 of them) bickering about who would make it because NO-ONE wanted to make it. I guess the banana split is too much work to make. It was very unprofessional and embarrassing having experienced them act like that in front of me....the customer. Happy to have a Moo Thru in nova! It brings back nostalgia of stopping by Moo Thru on Rt 29 on the drive to and from UVA. The space is small but cute. The workers were nice - they look like high schoolers, as you'd expect working at an ice cream shop in the summer.
