I got a Reuben and the corned beef was way too fatty for me. So that was a real disappointment. The soup was cream of chicken rice, and it was clearly milk based but also kind of thin. Like they didn't add flour or cornstarch or some other thickening agent. There may well be folks who like it that way, but unfortunately I'm not one so that too was disappointing. Most of the meal ended up abandoned. I might be willing to try it again and get something else, or do breakfast. If I was in the area, that is. I do work a few blocks away but with so many dining options it's pretty unlikely I'll stop in here again anytime soon. read more

I feel like this is a hidden gem restaurant in Chicago's Loop. It's inside of the Pittsfield Building, so there's no overt storefront for people to realize there's a restaurant there. Portions are large and the food is quite good. It's also a nice atmosphere and a chance to see inside of one of the historic skyscrapers in the Loop. read more

The food was great! Nothing pretentious, but you feel like you're going back in time, to the late 1920's. We had a Reuben sandwich and a bagel and lox platter. They were both reasonably priced and delicious. The location is right across the street from the Chicago cultural Center (was the Chicago Public Library, which is free and has an INCREDIBLE interior, complete with a Tiffany glass dome. Came in for late breakfast or early lunch a few days ago. Got a coke and spicy bacon cheddar skillet. The food is good diner food. I think what makes it special is that it's a restaurant in a skyscraper. Sometimes on the news they interview people in diners. Think it would be neat if they interviewed customers in here and listened to their thoughts on topics of the day. Pittsfield Cafe is located in the lobby of the Pittsfield building. Even though the lobby is elegant, there is also a feeling that the building has been deserted. The cafe is a standard diner. Found this breakfast place before taking a free walking tour of Chicago. This place is in a beautiful old building. There's a menu out front on the building. At first I wasn't sure if I was in the right place because it was dark in the building, but the lighting must be original. You'll see Pittsfield Cafe, tucked away in the lobby area. Really nice staff. Food came out really quick. I ordered a coffee and a Denver omelet. The omelet comes with hash browns and toast. Prices are reasonable. I have zero tolerance for food served luke-warm, which is how my breakfast arrived to my table. I kindly asked the server to put the plate in the microwave because "I like my food HOT: I emphasized HOT." In about a minute the dish was returned and the meal was a tad "warmer" in some places and now less than warm in others. Nothing was hot. No steam coming from the eggs, hash browns, or onions and this was a "skillet" dish. When available, I usually order "skillets" because the meal is almost always hot!' This experience was a bust. I ate less than half of my meal; the temperature yielded a tasteless experience. The establishment includes the tip and a credit card charge on the tab. I am visiting from Michigan and frequently visit Chicago. I enjoy my visits to the Windy City, but will find it difficult to return to the Pittsfield Cafe. read more

Food is super affordable for the area but it lacks flavor: I have tried the chili, polish, avocado benedict and the salmon lox Benedictine The chili soup & polish were very simple, but you can get better somewhere else in the area. The avocado benedict was too heavy and lacked flavor, but the salmon Benedictine was a better-balanced plate. (Only meal pictured. As you can see, not the fanciest place). My coworkers like some food from this place, so I'm assuming it's a hit or miss since it has such a big menu. Overall, I do hope they consider improving the flavor of their plates. I was looking for a reasonably priced place to grab a bite and hide from the rain, so my brother and I found ourselves in the ornate lobby of the building where Pittsfield Cafe is located. I love the setup, with the diner itself being quite small and tables spilling out into the lobby as if you're dining al fresco. We were sat "inside," which was almost unbearably warm due to the lack of ventilation and the kitchen exposed to the dining area, and promptly handed menus with expansive breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. I opted for the Santa Fe skillet, which has a hash brown base followed by grilled peppers, onions, fresh jalapeños, sausage, and pepper jack cheese. Skillets are served with three eggs of your choosing on top. Overall the food was just...bad. My sunny side up eggs still had raw whites on them. The hash browns were totally white and had no crisp to them. The whole dish lacked any sort of seasoning whatsoever--not even salt and pepper. My brother wasn't impressed by his sandwich, either. The service was polite and attentive, but they desperately need to find a cook who enjoys breakfast and knows their way around a spice rack. read more

The were very busy this morning and we got to sit at the counter which was a cool experience with the kids. Our server and service was great. The coffee was screaming hot and the food was excellent. The only drawback was the weird restroom situation . They were very hard to find, down in the basement, down a corridor, and you get there only to find that they're locked. read more

My recent visit to Pittsfield Cafe left me with mixed feelings. The aura of Pittsfield Cafe is one of an endearing old-school diner, taking you back in time with its mid-century modern decor. The space even seems to have its own ventilation system, with the heat from the kitchen. I ordered steak and eggs, and they were fine, decent enough that I wasn't tempted to send them back but not good enough that I'd order them again. The coffee was very bad, unfortunately, and the prices were what I would describe as steep for what I received. In terms of the speed of service, though, my hat is off to the staff. My food came out at a pace that you might describe as "breakneck," only without any of the attendant chaos that you might associate with a term like that. On the other hand, the quality of service left a lot to be desired. I would describe my experience as average, and for that only provided 3 stars. read more

I really want to like this place, but I don't find myself coming back here soon. First there's nothing wrong with the food. It's great, the French toast and bacon for $9 rocks. The eggs with sausage, bacon, and diced ham were less than exciting, again, not bad - it is just not calling me back. The coffee was so so, the juice meh. The service was efficient and friendly, but what really killed it was the ambience. The Pittsfield building itself is pretty dark and in the morning when you're trying to wake up, intimacy or catacomb like wasn't the mood to start the day...and I went in a little later . I didn't bother taking images of the food, it was that dark in the outer dining area. There may be potential in the inner dining area or near the bar, but that's not where the majority of the folks were eating. It's a popular enough place as the ratings go, but I get the feeling it's still trying to get its post-pandemic legs back, maybe it's post WW2 feel back. read more

I'm a simple man. If I see Reuben on the menu, I order Reuben. And let me tell you, this was one of the best Reuben sandwiches I've tried in awhile! Overall awesome place with only one annoyance that got me, "non-cash adjust" on the check which is essentially a 4% fee to use a credit card. I feel like in 2022 I should not be charged extra just to use a credit card. I understand the business has to pay transaction fees to the bank, but this just makes prices not transparent. What's next? "Electricity adjust"? "Rent adjust"? "Ketchup adjust"?? Cmon. This should be included in menu prices just like literally any other expense this business incurs. Anyway. Rueben sandwich was done just right, moist and not dry, on a perfect *dark* rye bread. None of that light rye bread nonsense some places serve you. Fries were also phenomenal and what amazed me not salty, something you don't see very often at cafes and restaurants. A pickle nicely finished the dish, crispy and flavorful. We also ordered West Coast scrambler and it was also top notch. (I was gonna say it's hard to screw up a scramble but that's actually not true lol.) The place itself is interesting too, it's located in the lobby of Pittsfield building and has inside area with bar, and "outside" area that's also inside/indoors in the lobby itself. While we were spending the day at the Art Museum, we left and I found this spot for lunch on Yelp. It's a block off of Michigan Ave and located in the foyer of an older hotel. Weird vibe at first, but when you step inside the restaurant you immediate get a diner feel. We sat down toward the front and quickly ordered. I got the chicken Caesar wrap which was hearty and good. We stopped by as the other breakfast places had LONG lines. The line here was much shorter in comparison, but the cafe was still busy. My party and I arrived before 11AM, but by the time a waiter was able to attend to us, it was only minutes past the cut off for the specialty breakfast items. Despite the wait, our server was very friendly and welcoming. The food was good, but not amazing. I noticed my avocado was a little spotty, but that's just me nitpicking. Just a side note to anyone who is sensitive to loud noises - the staff cleaning and dumping the plates is near the seating areas, which means that you can hear the dishes clattering quite often.
