Stayed in this hotel and was lucky enough to try both the rooftop restaurant and state and Lake Tavern. They were open late night, which was perfect after a long day of traveling when I just wanted a snack in my pajamas. The bartender was so nice, I sat there with my computer, taking up space and he was so friendly. I absolutely loved the truffle fries, and the portions were so generous. I also tried the artichokes, I usually love artichokes, but this one wasn't my favorite, I think the texture didn't have enough of a crunchy aspect, maybe a little char or something would have done the trick. The next day, I tried the lychee cocktail, which was also so good and easy to drink down. Prices were fair and the ambience is classy and delicate. Totally will come back. read more

Absolutely one of the worst experiences. Came here for thanksgiving and it was one of the worst meals I've ever had. Very disappointed spent my Thanksgiving here. First, I get it's a tavern but it was a holiday and you would think they would try to be holiday appropriate. They had the football game so loud you could barely hear the server. The server wasn't very friendly but I heard other servers speaking to their tables so it sounds like she was just rude to us. Would disappear for long periods of times. They lied about the menu. There was supposed to be a seafood bar and there certainly wasn't one. The salad bar was okay. I got the prime rib and it was cold and awful. Truly the worst beef I have ever had. The gravy or sauce on the prime rib was too sweet. The mashed potatoes were terrible. The only good thing in my plate was the asparagus. My drink was good and was a good pour. I'll give them that. So a friend of mine was in town singing at Buddy Guy. I wanted to take her to a good Blues brunch and saw this ad advertised so if we went. Expected a loud raucous brunch with blues music blasting in the background. There were two guys gently playing a guitar and keyboard and not a blues tune in earshot. Ordered beignets and had to send them back because they tasted like hard donuts. Since I don't eat meat, the only thing on the menu I could share with my friend was a vegetable succotash and a cheesy potato dish. We were hoping to enjoy some meatless omelettes. They did take the beignets off of our bill. Wait staff seemed to be overwhelmed but was only 5 or 6 tables. Got up twice to get cream for the coffee and hot sauce for the dishes. But met Daniel the manager on the way out and he was more than gracious and told us that veggie omelettes were available by request but not on the menu Might have to give it another try. The steak was cooked to perfection both times and the bartenders are excellent in their cocktail execution. Special acknowledgement to Miguel for his service and helpfulness in navigating the menu. I had a great server at the bar as well my second night but unfortunately did not catch his name. I will absolutely come here again if I stay in the area on my next Chicago trip. read more

Located on State and Lake, this conveniently located restaurant is close to the Wit Hotel. For $45, the three prix fix menu was not tasty. The avocado toast with cured salmon was ok. I do like crispy toast and this was not toasty. The chicken pot pie was reimagined with soupy filling and crusty top and tasty. The cheese cake was beautiful but lacked flavor. My wife and I visited Steak and Lake on a busy Friday night, and while it can get crowded, the service was still attentive--just be prepared for a bit of a wait. The food was well worth it! I had the NY Strip, and my wife enjoyed the Steak Medallions, both of which were incredible. Since we were staying at The Wit Hotel, we came back for breakfast the next morning, and it was equally delicious. The cinnamon French toast was amazing, and my seafood omelet was packed with flavor. For the 17th annual Chicago Restaurant Week, I choose to go to State and Lake Chicago Tavern. Can you believe it? Me, being a self-proclaimed foodie participating in Chicago Restaurant Week for the first time! Well it was a great experience, because I went there after work and met up with a great friend. I was able to enjoy a really nice drink and order from the Chicago Restaurant Week menu items. The vibe of the restaurant was really nice. It's next to The Wit Hotel, and I was able to sit in there while waiting for the restaurant to open at 5pm. You can conveniently enter the restaurant from the hotel lobby. Our waitress for this busy night was really nice and attentive. Now for the food and drinks. The best thing was the cocktail, appetizer and dessert. My cocktail was the Winterfell with Absolut Vodka, cranberry, lemon jucie and grenadine. I tried the Burrata and Spiced Sweet Potato Bruschetta for the appetizer. My friend ate the Winter Salad and Wild Mushroom Risotto and enjoyed everything. For my entree, I decided to get the Braised Short Rib Bourguignon. This could have been so much better, but the potatoes were super watery, and I feel like short rib was missing seasoning, and could have been much more flavorful. If I decide to go back, I'd really like to try the Steak Frites or the Prime New York Strip. I saw a few tables order, and it looked delicious. Overall, I'll give this restaurant 3 stars and that's only because I feel the entree could have been much better. I'd definitely give it another chance. read more

The service was prompt and friendly, so we were in and out without feeling rushed! We started with cocktails which were pretty good! Solid brunch spot. Came here for brunch and it wasn't very full, but we got seated right away and our server was fabulous! He was very friendly and honest about the menu with recommendations. I also really like the ambiance of the restaurant with the bar set up. Also noticed the seats were not jammed packed... I feel like that's becoming a tend for places, to cram as many people in as possible. I also really like the plates here and feel like I have to mention it. The coffee was average - tasted just like any other cup of coffee. I got the avocado toast and it was good, however I think it should be called "Ricotta Toast" considering I didn't get much avocado on it. Sad. One friend got the mushroom omelette and said the mushrooms were a bit weird and chewy. However the potatoes were good! My two other friends got the chicken and waffles and both loved it. I tried a bite and think I should have ordered it too because it was soooo good. Waffles were fluffy, chicken was moist and crispy. Overall it wasn't outstanding, but also not disgusting. We stopped here on a whim on a Friday night to grab some dinner. We were looking for a spot right off the Chicago River Walk that wasn't too far away. After a quick search (on Yelp of course) mixed with some googling, we decided to head to State and Lake Chicago Tavern. We wanted somewhere chill where we could sit down and rest (we had walked around downtown for the past few hours) and grab food somewhere that was not fast food nor a swanky seafood place. S&L Chicago Tavern was just right! We walked in around 8pm and there was no wait. The service was swift and friendly, and there were a few tables of people having dinner and folks watching sports at the bar. This restaurant is connected to the Wit Chicago, so I imagine there was a mix of hotel guests, tourists, and locals like us. We ordered everything to share (since we mostly wanted to rest) but were pleasantly surprised with the food and service! I hadn't done the research-the-menu-ahead-of-time process that I really enjoy before going to a new spot, and I think our meal here was "right place, right time." Looking now at their website they: "are a sleek contemporary gastropub... that combines the flair of artisanal American cuisine with the warm, welcoming vibe of a neighborhood pub." I totally got the homey, neighborhood vibes but it was still classy and elegant for a downtown experience with their "leather walls and plush banquettes." It was unpretentious such that you can walk in for a beer and burger at the bar or with a date and get lobster ravioli or steak frites. We ordered: * elk's own (husband's choice of cocktail) * greek salad of baby iceberg * double griddle burger w pommes frites with a requested side of their truffle aioli (cooked at medium) All the plates were in shared portions (as requested) and we left full and happy. On our way out, there was a performer who had just set up for the night on a mic near the front entrance. She got started with live music (solo vocals and guitar) and it is neat that this place will have live music on Fridays, at least when we were there mid-September. Stopped in for an early dinner before a show down the street. Same day reservation was easy to come by (weekday). We started with a couple of draft beers, which were pretty standard. We ordered a couple burgers and a side of Brussel sprouts. The burgers were cooked to order but otherwise just ok. The top bun was drenched in grease even tho the burger itself was a little dry (ordered medium). The burger also could've used a little more of the tomato remoulade which was basically just a fancy way of saying ketchup mixed with Mayo. The fries were amazing though. The ambience is cute but the food was mediocre at best and they don't allow any substitutes. I got a $50 steak and started salad yet couldn't change out the only side that came with it (a potato). Oh where do I start. We had a reservation for 1:45 and had to wait 15 minutes for our hostess to clean all the tables and get ours ready since no one else was on the floor. Sat without water or seeing our waiter for 30 minutes. Had to wait an hour and a half for our food. Food arrived missing items. Everyone else in the restaurant was also visibly upset. I stopped by here on a night that an event was letting out from the theater down the street (this past Wednesday). It was about 10:40pm. Originally, I tried to go upstairs to the rooftop, but was advised that it was closed. When I walked into the restaurant, upon asking were they closing, a waiter (not the most pleasant) said they were closing in about 10 minutes. I assumed that he meant the kitchen because there were plenty of people still sitting at the bar and upon asking was told the bar was fine to grab a drink from and have a little more time. I went to the bar to see about getting a drink and drinking it at a table like others who walked in around the same time opted to do as well. Getting a drink, the bartender (a woman/I think her name started with an N) advised that last call would be at 11 o'clock; no problem, I was just trying to wait for some of the traffic in the area to die down. I ordered a Sidecar - it wasn't good. Tried an Old Fashioned- it wasn't that good either. Then there were the flies. Not just one, but multiple fruit flies and they were big! Apparently they have a drinking problem, because I couldn't keep them away from my drink. Now, during the summer, I moreso expect flies, from doors open and closing so much and it being warmer, but in the winter, for there to be so many flies was concerning. Around 11, the bartender yelled my name out from the bar because I had taken a seat at one of the tables, since there was no space available at the bar. I made it up to the bar, I told her that I would like a final drink and then she could close out my tab. I got something simple (jack and coke), so that I wouldn't risk it being another poor tasting drink. After she finished making the drinks, she comes into my view (I was probably sitting 8 steps from the bar) and says loudly that she can't bring me my tab because she has a bar full of customers and I have to come get it. Pause. I NEVER asked for her to bring me my tab NOR expected it, and clearly if I had no problem going back and forth before to order and retrieve drinks BEFORE, apparently I wouldn't have a problem going to get my tab. I thought all of that was unnecessary. Anywho, I left a tip and sat back down to finish my drink before getting attacked by the flies one final time. If I was eating food from there, I would've been sick to the stomach. I remember coming here some years ago and the experience was much more pleasant than this. Meh! read more

So sad about this as I was really excited for the blues bbq brunch. Walked in and stood there for about 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. This guy (manager or owner) was sitting at a table and didn't even look up. We finally got sat and were brought water. My husband ordered a Pepsi and the guy said the server is coming in a minute. Well 10 minutes later she came by...she made a comment that only one of us was drinking something besides water. it looked like they had 3 hostesses and one server, but it was bad. No one including the manager guy stepped in to help. The cornbread came out cold and was just ok. We ordered plain beignets and there was an option but the server gave us all of them and they weren't good. We got the ribs which were okay and got the table side Cesar-there was nothing table side about it. Ordered the cracklin Mac n cheese but got the lobster instead. I don't even like lobster so outside one 1 noodle we didn't eat it. Around 11:30 live music stared playing but it was elevator jazz music verse blues for the bbq blues brunch. Came here for the first time to try something different for pre-theatre dining. The ambiance is nice inside: an upscale tavern with a lot of TVs. Service was fantastic all night. Our table ordered several rounds of drinks and everyone was happy with their selections. I was especially pleased that there was decent wine on the menu, which isn't always the case at a tavern-style restaurant. I ordered the State and Lake Burger for my entree, which came with fries. It was not at all the best burger I ever had, nor was it particularly innovative: very generic, actually, but good, as were the fries. The bill was reasonable for the most part: a little much, but that is to be expected when you are dining anywhere downtown. Overall, I'd give the place 3.5 stars if that was an option. I'll go back if I have to and have a decent meal, but I will never crave this place. read more

Dinner tonight was exceptional. Our last meal before leaving Chicago. Our server was charming and attentive, Miss Tanya. And I'm so glad that we made a choice to eat it here. These creations by chef Michael Taos were professional and so tasty. Layer of flavor, eye appeal, and full of wonderful flavors. I started my meal with the Kentucky bourbon barrel ale. It was smooth, slightly sweet, delicious and it sat on my tongue and found all the flavor points that makes a brilliant beer. My wife started with an entree of the "Jennies Meatballs." It was made with whipped goat cheese polenta, send merge, San Marzano pomodoro sauce, and grilled ciabatta bread. It was so very delicious. I liked that it was smooth and the texture was very pleasant in the mouth and not like you get it some restaurants. It was perfect. She also had roasted Brussel sprouts with dates Calabrian chili honey and Manchego cheese. What a delicious treat this was a whole new way for me to appreciate Brussels sprouts roasted. I had a slow cooked Sakura pork shank Pot-Au-Fue. I have dimension that the presentation was stunning. When it came out as a standing shank with all the root vegetables around it and the sauce it was already, giving me eye appeal before I even tasted it. It is with roasted artichokes and root vegetables and tomatoes and Greek olives in the sauce brilliant. It was a wonderful Malone flavor that came together came together as a unique meal. There was not a drop left on my plate when I was finished. The chef delivered it to my table and was very proud that somebody appreciated what he had created and it did and rightly so. I highly recommend that you go down and try the dinners. There were so many offerings that mine might not be the perfect thing for someone else but it was for me and you will find the perfect thing for you.
