Pizza J is a great casual dining experience. The menu is simple, but not. There are a good variety of items to choose from and plenty of things you will never see anywhere else. (In true Julian Forgue form.) The pizzas are large, I suggest for 3 people if you do not want leftovers. We had apps today, Garlic Parmesan wings, Garlic Knot Fries and pepperoni and cheese fritters. My inner child came to form when I left the bathroom, (The little Mermaid was on tv). So I ordered a Yoo-hoo!! . Leaving full and eager to come back and try something else. We arrived at 2:30 and we were the only table. Other movie was on as well Scott Pilgrim saves the world . Sorry Pizza J, but you lost us as customers. $26 dollars ($21 pizza plus tax and tip) and my husband actually had to check inside the box to make sure the pizza was even in there, it was so light. The pizza is described on the website as "Braised Short Rib, Mushroom, Caramelized Onion, Cheddar, Mozz, & Blue Cheese." Sounds tasty, right? This is the thinnest pizza I've ever seen...it was as thin as a tortilla but managed to still be under cooked! The short rib was skimpy and dry and for supposedly having 3 different cheeses on it, you could barely find any. Seriously. This thing was pathetic. We were quoted a 40-minute wait time, so after 40 minutes we picked it up (we literally live a 1-minute drive away...and we drove because it was cold and I'm 9 months pregnant) and when I had a piece once we got it back home it wasn't even hot. My husband called to express our frustration and the guy who answered the phone simply said he'd let the kitchen know. Thanks. Great customer service. We love our neighborhood and try to support all the local businesses but this will no longer be one of them. What a ripoff. $26 for basically some flaccid dough. read more

I ate a pizza and fries. Hulk pizza was amazing. I asked for it to be well done. Hardy mouth feel, with delicate complexion of flavors. Dough is a classic chewy, yet melts in your mouth. Toppings are appropriately delivered with purpose, not overwhelming, not lacking. Fries with blue cheese aioli were surprisingly great. Imagine REAL home style potatoes with some serious flavor-bang in the light-bodied blue cheese dipping sauce. Experience was pleasant; the loud iPod distracted me from my poorly poured nitro stout. This is our favorite pizza place on the Westside! They deliver now through grubhub but we still like to dine in because they always have such a cool, warm vibe! They get 4 stars instead of 5 because most of their ingredients are not locally sourced but that is reflected in their pricing. Depending on how special the pizza you get is, you will spend about $20. Their sides/apps are pretty awesome as well. They have gluten free crust and plenty of veggie options. Went in for an early lunch today. I'd been looking forward to this since Julian's is one of my favorite brunch places. Open kitchen, lovely bar area, stylish restrooms - like Julian's but with a bit of a different vibe and much more space. We also had a very good basic pizza (the American, I think): squarish, with a thin foldable crust, very salty, with subtle sliced fresh basil and good, not overly assertive, red sauce. Since if was early we only had the pizza, and none of the interesting sounding salads or appetizers - and there was no one next to us whose plates I could peek at! The wings were very good but they charged for blue cheese and The lord of the wings deal is 6 wings per coupon and we have 2 coupons so 12 wings. We got 10. I ordered a pizza for pick up from pizza j last week and they informed me that the wait time was about an hour when I placed my order. I was already on my way and decided I'd wait the hour. I got takeout from Pizza J last night, and as usual it was delicious. The crust is crispy, the sauce isn't overly spiced with oregano like it is at many pizza places, and the toppings are very fresh tasting. The staff is always pleasant. read more

Full disclosure here: I'm not really a fan of Julian's so I tried Pizza J expecting to be similarly underwhelmed, but I've been here twice now and walked away happy (and full!) each time. That'll teach me to compare the two. I like this trend of renovating old car shops into businesses, so I actually really enjoy the feel of the place. It's very casual, darker than you might expect a restaurant to be, but I don't mind that. The beer selection, an essential aspect of a pizza joint, is good. Lots of local brews, reasonably priced. Not as extensive as Julian's, but again, this isn't Julians. The only appetizer that I've tried is the cheeseburger calzone but what I can say is: GET IT. It is delicious. Honestly, I'll think about just ordering that for my entree next time I eat here. The pizzas themselves are very good. I've tried the steak and the meatball and been very happy with each of them. The pizzas are large, so while they run $14-16 you're getting good value. I like this place. I haven't found a lot of pizza in Providence that I like, so that's nice. read more

Right off the bat, Pizza J exudes a very cool, laid back vibe. The employees are genuinely nice and welcoming, mixed with a refreshing sense of humor. As soon as you walk in you can see pizza dough being stretched, thrown, and spun in the air. A nice prelude to the authentic and homemade taste you're about to experience. The prices are very fair, with a varied selection of options. We ordered the Strutter (Italian sausage), American Beauty (simply cheese and herbs), and a gluten free pizza. Both the regular pizzas were superb. Dare I say it... The best pizzas in Rhode Island! And I know I have said this once or twice before, but seriously, Pizza J takes the cake (or the pizza?) with the best gluten free crust I have ever tasted! It seems more whole grain and homemade than any of the other seemingly processed crusts I've had at other places. Tried this place for lunch once w/ my boyfriend had a pizza and smoked wings delivered both was amazing we loved n ate all the food even raved bout how good it was to other people but TONIGHT I ordered dinner n my pizza arrived over cooked so it was dry n also had this random hole in it for whatever reason, maybe it formed while being over cooked? So the pizza was paper thin n dry we forced ourselves to eat it but that wasn't the worst part I open the box of wings to see these sorry excuses of celery pieces that are pencil thin and curled over and old looking. I actually enjoy the celery that comes w/ wings but this was inedible n so was THE WINGS THEMSELVES they tasted undercooked on the inside n OUT the skin texture was disgusting took one bite n spit it out right away cus I could tell it wasn't cooked the way it shoulda been, threw them in the GARBAGE, Grubhub called them n they told me they refused to refund me so Grubhub offered $10.00 and that's nothing compared to the wasted $32 I spent on this "dinner". I had to make my man something from home to eat after this disaster just so he could be full. Wicked inconsistent food quality compared to my first experience with them and awful customer service w/ how they dealt wit it I honestly can't believe they sent me this then denied a refund too. A most welcome addition to the 'hood! Stopped by tonight, right as it opened at 5, for a takeout pizza. Figured I would grab a glass of wine while i waited and to my surprise, my pizza was ready before I even got 1/2 way through my wine! Interior is funky and fun. Great bar area and definitely welcoming to folks who are going there solo. Wine "list" is minimalistic- choices are white or red. I'm a bit of a wine snob but I do have faith in Julian so I ordered the red anyway (could have had one of the many beers on tap but was in a wine mood). Although way too cold for my taste, it was definitely a passable red. Pizza was absolutely delicious. Thin, crispy crust, yummy sauce, nice amount of cheese and fresh basil to top things off. My first time here, hubby's second. Right before vacation, there are 2 foods we need to have before we leave. We were about to head to Greece and Paris for 8 days and knew that we would miss the loveliness of buffalo wings and pizza. However, we wanted to try something new and not go to one of our "go to" places. We drove around and saw Pizza J. I had been wanting to try it for a while. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and hot wings. The wings were not buffalo wings, but had a good flavor to them. They had a very slight zing to them. The pizza was good. Probably not on our top 5, but good enough to go back and have. I was less than impressed with the fact that they didn't have bread (for the table nor for purchase) but that might just be the southern girl in me. When I asked for bread, the cook actually did make me some. Although it was expensive for bread and totally covered in minced garlic. I appreciated the gesture. But here's the kicker, I guess since I was with people who had been here before, the waitress didn't feel the need to explain "wing night" to me, even though I asked. When i discovered this place i was so excited- gluten free vegan pizza! Gluten free beer! My wife and i decided to do a date night here and it was the most disappointing meal. They had no vegan cheese. How do you run out of vegan cheese when that's a huge part of your appeal? They made me a pizza with vegan ricotta, olives and i asked for light sauce. The "pizza" was totally burned, and literally had blobs if sauce on it. I took a bite and couldn't go further. Our waitress was great. Extremely apologetic and took the pizza off the check. My wife loved her seitan wings and her slice of pizza. We loved the atmosphere of the place and our waitress so we decided to give it another try. We made a reservation for ten on Super Bowl Sunday because we were told they'd have the game on the projector. We called to confirm a few days before and to change the number to 15. No problem. We also confirmed they'd have vegan cheese! Day of Super Bowl. We walked in and noticed the screen wasn't down. When asked about the game we were told it wasn't possible to project it :( That was the main reason we decided to host the party there. The place was empty but they seated us in the corner under the screens so half of our party couldn't see the game. :( Most of the group ended up squeezing into one table or moving to see the tv. We also had to ask them to turn the sound on when the game came on even though we'd been told it'd be on. A lot of our group wanted pepperoni pizza but they were out. They were also out of white sauce. I'm not sure why they run out of everything- I'd hope you'd plan better but it seems to happen a lot. My wife had the garlic fries which she didn't care for (but loved the aioli) and the seitan wings again. I had vegan gluten free pizza which was delish! Our waitress Michelle was great!! She split everyone's check and was extremely patient with our group. I'll definitely come back but will always call to confirm that what we're going to order is available and if we host another event it won't be an event where we're watching something on the TVs. I went to the restroom and I must say I felt like the facilities were fit for a queen, or king....nice, spacious and clean. I ordered the seitan wings sweet Thai chili flavored. Here is another fine pizza spot in PVD. If you are a fan of Providence Coal Fire & Flatbread Company then this place will be right up your alley. We came a little later on a Thursday night and the place was busy but not too packed. They have a good beer list and you can get the draft beers in a few different sizes, as well as flights. Our sodas came in the old school red cups that I remember from my childhood. In fact this place is a good mix of childhood pizza night nostalgia and grown up style. We started with an order of onion rings and they were really good. They use a tempura batter so they were huge and crispy but light and not too greasy. They come with a blue cheese dipping sauce which wasn't bad but was a bit too gorgonzola-y for our tastes. But that is probably just our personal preference, we like some blue cheeses just not gorgonzola as much. Since they pulled off a pretty impressive onion ring I'm excited to try some of their other appetizer options. For our pizza we went with half Beautiful Yeti (pork & bbq sauce) & Half Tony Clifton (Potato & Riccota), the Yeti was great and could have eaten a whole pie of just that. The Tony Clifton was good but it was more of a delicate flavor, not as BAM in your face like the Yeti. The pizza is a large square style and very satisfying, we ended up taking some home. Most of the pizzas come in at around $16, so not as expensive as some of the other "fancy" pizza places but still just as delicious. I'm not sure if they have overthrown my love for the previously mentioned pizza restaurants but it's pretty high up there and we will definitely be coming back. I'm pretty happy with this place. The beer selection is so good (not very extensive but a great variety of good/not too typical stuff) that I haven't been able to try one of their signature cocktails yet... and that says a lot since the cocktail list looks pretty good. The other issue with getting me to the cocktails is the size of the beers offered. Each draft beer is available in 3 different sizes! Small (probably 2-4oz. - ish) Half (probably 6oz. -ish) and Full (pint/goblet/etc.) This makes it WAY too temping to try multiple beers without being too committed to any one. We've been 3x times now. We sat at the bar the first time and at a table with friends the other two times. Our interactions with the staff have been great with one exception. We made reservations but when we showed up, no one seemed to know anything about it. It all worked out since we were early enough that we were seated easily right away but it was a little annoying since our out of town friends showed up first and were told there were no reservation. They instantly panicked that they were at the wrong place. But, like I said, it all worked out ok, so no big deal. In the future, I plan to call to confirm on the day-of, so that this can be avoided. The vegan options are limited- however, the mere fact that there are are optionS and not A option, is a truly wonderful thing. They have one kind of house made cheese and one type of house made seitan that they prepare a couple of ways. At home I usually make pizzas with half vegan cheese and half cow cheese so that y spouse and I are both happy. Pizza J does not offer this option and the pizzas only come in one size. We keep trying to get them to do it but they keep responding with some health code issue... which I don't fully understand the concept of. There are some vegan 'wings' on the menu lately which are alright. They aren't textured too much (a bit on the rubbery side) and there's only one or two sauces for them but my vegan dining guests were super happy about the simple fact that they existed and gobbled them up. I have only had one slice of non-vegan pizza here. It was the one with potatoes and steak. It was damn good but to be honest, the vegan pizzas are pretty tasty too (even for a non-vegan). I'm not a fan of square cut pizza but I appreciate that Pizza J is trying to build a unique style so I'll let that one slide. The crust is very good. It's a little charred but still chewy and thin in the middle - which is just the way I like it. Parking is a dream. There's a small lot in front but there is AMPLE street parking on both sides of the street. Even on a night when we had to wait an hour to be seated we parked so close that we could have thrown a rock and hit the front door. There is an area that appears to be partitioned off for patio seating. I'm excited to see how this space is used in the summer. If it does become a patio for dinners (rather than smokers), I might become a weekly regular. read more

This place is literally become my go to place on Tuesday nights for wings and beer! The service is always on point and superfast. Very typical pizza/pub place. It's not quite like Julian's on Broadway but I think that's why I like it so much. Tuesday's is 50 Cent wings. The minimum is 10, FYI. I'd heard of Pizza J. I just hadn't had a chance to get there until this week. I knew it would be good because A. I love flatbread pizza and B. I love Julian's. Much like Julian's the decor was very modern and hip. They had a TV screen behind bars playing the Sword in the Stone, exposed loft ceilings, and sleek, black pedestal sinks in the bathroom. My friend and I sat in the dining room and were STARVING. So we decided to start with the ChooChoo platter I think it was called? A little sampler of everything, and we ordered the special pizza with ricotta and arugula. The vegetable tempura and french fries on the platter were amazing, but the onion rings were a little greasy. Next up, our pizza which was a little overcooked. The cheese had turned from melty to dry and there were black bubbles on the crust. As a former pizza girl myself, I would have re-made it. Not served it. Super casual, tons of space, there's a little arcade in the back, cool decor and pieces from local artists on the walls! TONS of vegan and gluten free options. Beer menu is large enough to make the majority of ppl happy. Mixed drink menu is short, I've tried a couple and neither were awful or incredible. Really good list of non-alcoholic drinks ranging from yoohoos to coffee to Mexican coke. The atmosphere is a little hipster but fun. A few arcade games like pin ball. Stuff you might play more on a date night and less for your kids, although the kids I saw there seemed to still enjoy an older school game. Multiple tvs that you can see basically anywhere. Almost always tuned to cartoons or Disney movies. Things like spongebob, nick at night, Popeye, and aladin. I know being a New Yorker I can be jaded about pizza, but how this place stays in business I do not know. The pizzas sound interesting but every single time I have called in for a pick up there is a two or three hour wait and if you put in an order they don't have it when you get there. The one time I tried their pizza was in person and utterly forgettable. The place has terrible acoustics and we got Spicoli for a waiter. We never got the drinks that we ordered and when we finally got the pie the toppings were ridiculously sparse and smaller than advertised. I could of made the same thing at home for 1/3 of the price. The burn out waiter totally ignored us once the food was out, and refused to bring the us the check. Had to leave some money on the table and walk out. read more
