Had dinner at Pizza Man on Downer tonight. Walked in a little after 4:30 pm (skipped lunch) and was seated immediately. However, as the evening progressed having a reservation is suggested especially if they have a party in the upstairs space. Dinner was excellent, spaghetti and meatballs (veal and pork) was steamy hot and delicious. Ordered a salad with goat cheese, dark cherries, apple slices, walnuts and vinaigrette dressing. It was huge able to share it with my partner. Ended the meal by sharing Tiramisu. Loved the vibe (linen napkins) and energy of the place. Live music was set up for the musicians to appear but it was too early. However, the soundtrack was fun to dine by. A little pricey but loved that they served more than pizza. Give it a try . . . you will like dining in an upscale setting. read more

Pizza Man has been shuffled around the last few years, location wise. Pretty sure this Downer spot was closed for a bit? They opened in the Beerline area, and now they're back here? Either way, I'm glad this one is open here again because it's definitely a favorite. Seems as though they've made a few changes and modernized it a bit. I was a fan of the most rustic-version personally, but still great nonetheless. Came in with a group of 7 for a recent Saturday night dinner and had a great experience. We did make a reservation in advance, but were surprised it wasn't as busy as we figured it would be. Our server was super sweet and attentive. We a bottle of wine for the table, among a handful of beers ordered, and I also had the holiday-themed tom collins cocktail which came with cranberry and rosemary. Very tasty! We couldn't help but order both truffle fries and eggplant fries to start. Both were so damn good. What is it about truffle that's addicting!? Perfect size-amount of both to share with the table. For mains we decided to split a couple of pizzas. Can I recall which ones they all were? No. Can I recall how they tasted? Yes - SO good! I love their pizza. The thin crust is everything! My favorite was the one that was on special that night. Really though, I don't think you can go wrong with any pick of their pies. Ended the meal with two shared desserts: cannoli and tiramisu. I gave Pizza Man a mediocre review in November 2024. I'll be at a 5pm event just down the street tomorrow . . . and, because it might go long, I called Pizza Man to confirm their weekday closing time (9pm), and to ask "What's the latest that a walk-in can be seated?" I fully expected to be told something like 8:50 or 8:45. To my astonishment -- and disgust -- the young lady who took the call answered a question that I hadn't asked. She said 8:30 was the latest we could be seated . . . but she didn't mean that the place closes at 8:30. She said, "The kitchen closes at 8:30". The KITCHEN closes at 8:30. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On what planet does "open until 9" mean that you not only have to have your butt in a seat by 8:30, but must have an order in to the kitchen by then? On what planet do hours listing a closing time of 9pm really mean that 9pm is when the entire staff wants to be out the door and on their way home? I'll tell you: Planet Pizza Man. Posted hours should mean what they say, in all types of businesses. That means, if you're there before the posted closing time, you're welcome to do business there. I worked in several restaurants in the course of my hardworking life, and never, EVER, would we think of giving anyone the bum's rush if they had the nerve -- the NERVE! -- to show up actually thinking they could be served until the posted closing time. Like Beans and Barley, sorely missed now, the old Pizza Man -- the REAL Pizza Man, on North Avenue -- is now only a fond memory. I haven't been to pizza man in a couple of years, it's a whole different vibe now. It feels fancier inside which is great if that's what you want but I kinda of missed the booths/ when the pizza came out on wire racks instead of just a big plate . The pizza was alright, I wasn't blown away. I ate the artichoke a la mode and the artichoke tasted and looked straight from a can. We got two deserts, the tiramisu was great. My dining companion and I had a pleasant experience at Pizza Man on Downer. The lighting was moody and comfortable and the music was enjoyable, but it did get a little loud as the tables in our section were a little close together. For a starter, we went with the eggplant fries, which was absolutely the correct decision. They were crispy on the outside but melt-in-your-mouth tender on the inside. The marinara was delicious, but the creamy Parmesan sauce took the dish to the next level. It provided much-needed tangy-ness that cut through the richness. We split a build-your-own pizza, and it was alright. If you're into thin crust, you'd probably be better off ordering that than the pan crust we decided on. The pizza wasn't remarkable, but it might be better if you went for a speciality option. The dessert menu appeared to have some good options, and we landed on the cannoli. But, for $8, I wish we would have gone with something else. The tiramisu was the same price and would have been better to split than a cannoli that you can polish off in two bites. The flavor of the cannoli was pleasant enough, but it was overpriced. Though it took our server a bit to make her first stop to our table, service throughout the rest of the evening was fantastic. She was attentive and the food came out quickly. Despite it not being a ~perfect~ experience, I largely enjoyed my time at Pizza Man on Downer. Next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely consider stopping in. read more

New dawn, new day, a new Pizza Man! I'm so glad to see Pizza Man return to Downer Ave., and even more excited that their new vibe and menu is a hit! Their pizza has always been strong, but now offering up incredible chef made pasta dishes and more! Service on our last visit was impeccable. We stoped in between MKE Film Festival movies this afternoon with eight people. We were seated immediately and able to order quickly. The free glass of wine with a festival ticket was a bonus and we weren't made to feel guilty for taking them up on that. Zoe was a wonderful server! Pizza man is always talked about in such a positive ways. But I've been there three times now and it has been underwhelming each time. Last night I had a chicken Parmesan and I swear it was just frozen that they reheated and threw a little piece of cheese on top and some generic sauce it was pretty disgusting. This review is for a corporate party in Pizza Man's second floor private space. From the moment I connected with Isaac, the special events coordinator, to the end of our event he made it clear that he was there to meet our needs. Isaac understood the special needs of our team building event with access to drinks and food. Our pizzas were delicious, but more importantly the staff knew the perfect cadence for offering refreshed drinks without feeling like they were hovering. One person on our team happened to be having a birthday and they were very welcoming of us bringing in a cake, and even let me drop it off in advance so it could be a surprise. Loved this place! The name Pizza Man doesn't sound so fancy but when you enter this establishment, it is absolutely gorgeous to look at. We were seated promptly on the second floor and had an amazing waitress. I didn't feel like drinking alcohol so she recommended I try the Apple Cider Mule Mocktail and it was soooooo good that my friend who ordered the same drink but with alcohol preferred mine over her own drink. We shared eggplant fries because we had been hearing people rave about them and they definitely live up to it! They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I'm pretty sure we finished them in five minutes and when it came to the last fry, we played rock paper scissors to see who would get the last one. Finally for the main course, I got the spicy rigatoni. Normally I don't like the sausage but this one was amazing. Everything was so rich and well made and well proportioned. It was the right amount of creamy but you could still taste the flavors over the cream. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a girls night or a fun semi fancy date. read more

Nice atmosphere, although I miss booth seating. Nice menu and wine list. I've been a fan of their pizza for years, however, this incarnation of pizza man has a lousy crust. We ordered the standard crust and it's like a dried out flour tortilla. No flavor, just crispy dough with toppings. Now I love a crispy crust ( Zaffiros!!) but this is equivalent to papa murphys. Normally, this would be a three-star review but the tiramasu was so amazing, I'm giving an extra one. I haven't been to Pizza Man in probably 13 years, when it was in its old location on North and Oakland (now a strip mall). You know, before it burned down and had to rebuild. I have nothing against Pizza Man except that it's really expensive. The service was great. They have a happy hour 4-6 with $5 draft beers and $5 tap wine. We took advantage of the BOGO large pizzas (we didn't know it was the special, we lucked into it). Normally, we'd order a pan crust pizza half one flavor, half another. Since we could both get a large pizza to our liking, we did that. I had the Artichoke a la Mode and added anchovies to half. My dining partner had the Milwaukee. We left with a full pizza in leftovers. The toppings and cheese were great. The sauce is delicious but, and this is a big but, the crust was so soggy. It was like when you peel the toppings off a pizza and expose the super doughy top crust. That soggy. Now, we're not sure if it was due to our ingredients (the Artichoke a la Mode has cherry tomatoes on it and the Milwaukee has mushrooms and sausage--that all adds moisture) but when you think Milwaukee thin crust pizza, you think a crackery crust, not a soggy bottom (in the immortal words of Mary Berry from The Great British Bake Off). To be fair, that didn't stop us from eating nearly half of each pizza. The next step is to reheat it and see if that crust doesn't crisp up. read more

We have gone twice so far and both times it has been great. The new location has an incredible outdoor patio. We were unable to use this space due to the weather but walked outside for a bit to have a drink and look at the views. The cheese curds are outstanding, very similar to the ones at iron horse hotel which are the best in the city. We has great pizza, service, apps and drinks. Blah. Be forewarned, while they call themselves Pizza Man, and share the location of the beloved old restaurant, they don't offer Pizza Man pizza. The owner acknowledged as much in Milwaukee Magazine, stating the old recipes were lost. In any event, everything about the pizza is different and disappointing (very disappointing). Went to the new location of pizza man right on the river this past weekend and it was awesome! Their patio is huge and it is a great spot to be by the water to enjoy food and drinks. The wait staff was a little slower but I think it's because they just recently opened at this location. I recommend the Bianca pizza and Brussels sprout salad. I would skip out on the mozzarella sticks. They weren't the greatest. Overall would recommend tho! read more

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to review Pizza Man, but here we are! I had been to the original location several times before the fire, and was really excited when they finally opened this location! I've been here many times and this restaurant will always be one of my favorites. The wooden booths still have the same look and feel, the dim lighting gives the restaurant a nice ambiance. There's an awesome upper level with a bar, patio and private area to rent out for parties, weddings or large dinners. Don't forget to cheek out the cool wine bottle chandelier above the staircase! Their thin crust pizza is my favorite in Milwaukee, it's crispy and light. My favorite topping is cream cheese which is unique and adds a nice pop of flavor. I always get the Artichoke a la mode or the Hawaiian without meat (vegetarian). They have one of the best wine lists in the city and also offer tap options. They serve local beers and well known ones. I was there recently with someone who ordered the calamari and she loved it! That's not my thing so I didn't try it. The fudge brownie dessert was DELICIOUS! We sat at the bar and Joshua was our bartender. He was very knowledgeable about the wine, beer and food and offered great suggestions. We could tell he was very busy but still took the time to answer our questions. Great experience! I know some reviewers have mentioned how long it takes too get food at times, but my food and drinks have always came out within a reasonable time. Monday is deep dish day and Wednesday is BOGO so maybe expect a little bit more time for food to come out on those days. I haven't had an entree there in a while but have tried bites of other people's meals and they were good. They also offer a really cool date night (or hangout) deal for $45. You get a large pizza, large salad, garlic bread, two desserts, and two tickets to a movie at Downer theater. Awesome deal! I've talked to the GM Hugo several times and he's a really nice guy.
