    Pizza Shack Underwhelming Cheese Slice
    Mike R.

Underwhelming. Going to the nearby movie theater thought about trying out Pizza Shack for a slice. They have seating to "enjoy" your food. I've had worse in the city, but given the highest quality of so many basic slices Manhattan has to offer felt like they weren't even trying to make it any better than mediocre. Shame. Perhaps given what appears to be limited competitive pizza spots immediately nearby in this far west block between 11 Ave. and West Side Highway, Pizza Shack feels they don't need to.

Is it even NYC pizza if it doesn't fold???

I was patiently awaiting for this place to open because a pizzeria + ice cream shop sounds pretty darn good. I've gotten pizza from here around a handful of times since it opened. My neighborhood pizza spot that I've only frequented a handful of times...you do the math. I keep hoping the next time will be better and I really wish I have better things to say about it, but it is just not good. Their cheese slice tasted pretty decent in the beginning. However, the crust is completely floppy. Like, is it even "crust" if it's floppy. No New Yorker wants that! Now they've started doing $1.50 cheese slices and it's all downhill from there. Now it's dry and the cheese is rubbery. None of the slices with toppings I've had were good. The worst was the meat lovers. The potential and concept are good but the execution is extremely poor. They're surrounded by 3 large residential buildings, DSNY, and other offices right there. No reason for a pizzeria to not be busy most times. They're dead most times. Tonight the pizza slices on display looked stale and the ice cream were almost all gone. Looks really run down for a fairly new place. Instead of working on improving their food, they're focusing on gimmicks like game nights and horrible $1.50 slice. The price is the least of their problems. Start with improving the crust and testing out your product. People will come and pay if the food is good.

    Chicken parmigiana sandwich

Chicken parm sandwich with vodka sauce hits the spot, definitely my go-to neighborhood pizza spot. Their plain cheese slice and Sicilian slices are also great (I tend to keep it simple with pizza)

Came here the first week they epened. Got a grandma slice and pepperoni, both were good. Want to come back after a few months to see how things are going.

Every time I have ordered, pizza is hot, fresh and tasty! Quite convenient from my apt as well! (Don't sleep on their soft serve ice cream!)

The arancini was a standout: perfectly crisp on the outside, creamy inside, and served with a rich, delicious sauce that tied it all together. We ended on the tiramisu, which was absolutely worth saving room. It was light, flavorful, and a perfect finish to the meal. What really elevated the experience, though, was the staff. Everyone was genuinely kind and helpful--especially notable for New York--and it made the whole evening feel relaxed and welcoming. A small heads-up: it's a bit tricky to find, so give yourself extra time. That said, the hidden, underground subway setting is part of the charm and makes the whole experience feel unique. I'd love to see more restaurants creatively use these kinds of spaces in the future.

It is located right in the hallway of a subway entrance, next to a bar and across from a coffee shop, and it somehow manages to feel like a cozy, sit-down restaurant right in the middle of NYC. Don't let the odd location fool you, the food here is outstanding. The Neapolitan and Sicilian-style pizzas are both exceptional, with rich, well-balanced flavors and perfectly executed crusts. Every bite tastes high quality. Also, don't skip the house-made lemonade! The experience is even better because of the incredibly friendly and attentive staff. They were all so kind to so many people. From offering to keep leftovers in the fridge until a customer was done at their broadway show, to offering a scone to a young child while he and his father waited for their pizza to be done, it was more than just flipping a table and onto the next tip, it was humanity at its best. Be sure to give See No Evil Pizza a try. You certainly will want to come back again for more.

RIGHT BY THE DOOR. Do people not realize that putting a bar near a door on a freezing cold night benefits no one? Good thing I did not order alcohol or I would have froze to death. Seriously, none of the pies stood out in grand memory. All I can think of is, well, nothing. Nothing positive anyway. The names of the pies are funny, and the staff is friendly, but besides that, the quality of the food for lack of a better word, dare I say it, sucks. Hoping to salvage the meal, I ordered their Chicken Parmesan. It was the Hail Mary pass that unfortunately did not connect. The cutlets are overcooked and dry, and the red sauce cooked with it has minimal tomato flavor. At least the spaghetti is cooked to a nice al dente and mellow garlic butter flavor, but like the sauce cooked in, it is also minimal. Part of the problem I feel is they are trying to go for a vibe that has a New York and modern feel. It does not work. Stay true to one or the other. Or at least look at other business models. I will use another pizzeria in Bushwick that exemplifies it perfectly. It is a hipster pizzeria in a hipster neighborhood. Through balance, it creates an ambiance both welcoming and warm without losing any of its Bushwick character. It does this by not beating you over the head with hipster vibes, just enough to let you know that you are in Bushwick. The band Franz Ferdinand was playing as I was wrapping up. Rather than take the pizza out, I suggest you throw it out. Overall pizza rating: 1.7/5

The first thing you notice is the main bar wall, with its exposed centuries-old brick that has survived every bit of chaos this city could throw at it. It's subtly backlit from with a warm, amber glow that highlights every single historic groove and imperfection, making the whole room look like it's breathing. I have to say the centerpiece of the entire narrow room is the bar itself, and let me tell you, it is an absolute stunner of a contrast. Instead of the usual dark, sticky tavern wood, they've dropped in a long, continuous slab of pristine, elegantly smooth white stone. It glows under the soft lighting like a block of polished marble. There are no strobe lights and no obnoxious, skull-rattling bass in this joint. Instead, the room is wrapped in a blanket of incredibly chill music that matches the pulse of the room perfectly. It's just loud enough to drown out the noise in your own head, but quiet enough that you don't have to scream over the smooth white counter to be heard. People aren't here to be seen on TikTok; they're here to disappear for an hour or three. You slide into a chair, order a proper Old Fashioned from a bartender who doesn't rush the pour, and watch the ice melt against the amber-lit brick. It's the ultimate underground exhale--a perfect, narrow slice of peace in a city that never shuts up. Cheers!
