Friends were in town visiting, and they were staying nearby Pizzeria Avellino. Being that they were from NY - they were excited to score a slice of pizza before the night ended. They had spied Pizzeria Avellino on their drive-in and asked that we meet them there. While I didn't personally partake in the evening pizza - I appreciate that Pizzeria Avellino exists. With so many gourmet pizza spots in the city - it's refreshing to have spots that serve some solid NY style slices in a low key casual setting - without a line. The service wasn't necessarily the friendliest, and their overhanging TV was quite loud - during our meal here (though I suspect they would have quickly put the volume down if we asked), but I am all about keeping casual affordable eateries alive - especially on Lombard street. My husband and his friend had a couple of slices - and gave thumbs up signs when asked how they were. They said that while the pizza wasn't mind-blowing - it was decent. Being that my husband and his friend are well acquainted with authentic NY pizza - 'decent' works. I'm surprised that this pizza spot isn't open later than 10pm on the weekend - since I believe a hot slice of pizza would go quick - once the bars close. That being said - it's located in a little sleepier (it's right by the Travelodge San Francisco at the Presidio) area of the Marina - so I'm sure that weary tourists appreciate the reasonable closing time. This review is being written from my couch, where I've been banished for my omnipotent lingering garlic breath after enjoying the best garlic fries of my life. (I regret nothing, and I'll do it again.) The garlic fries at Pizzeria Avellino put other garlic dishes to shame. They are seasoned perfectly with so, so much garlic. Somehow they're more garlicky than actual garlic, and I don't understand how it's physically possible. Finding a slice of cheesy pizza has become easier now a days in SF. There are many places around the city now offer many different types of pizza slices. When it comes to a pizza slice I sometimes prefer a simple basic cheesy slice in SF. There is a place in the Marina which has been serving slices of pizza for years. It's located in the end of all those Lombard street hotels and motels and it's called Avellino. On a Summer stroll with the sun hiding in the clouds I landed on Lombard street at Avellino. I came back here to see if they kept it consistent. I ordered the pepperoni slice and it was tasty. The pepperoni was savory and had good flavor. The crust was a bit flakey and the crusty was a bit flakey like some in SF. They also sell cheese burgers and chopped salad like some in SF. Overall still consistently a place to grab a good pizza slice. I have grabbed pizza a couple of times here over the last few months. I love that my pizza by the slice comes in a nice little perfectly shaped cardboard box. I always have to take it to go so, while I might like a little more toppings and bite to the pizza it's itself, it works well for what I need and all the different kinds that I have tried so far taste pretty good. They have seating outside so it's great if you have your dog with you or you just want to enjoy the weather. The patio is really cute and a location is good as well. Probably best not to stray too far from the pizza menu, since the other items are clearly not the specialty. A slice will do the trick if you're hungry. Cheese Slice: It was very cheesy, which was the biggest plus. Felt skimpy on the sauce though and the a bit too bready. Mozzarella Sticks: A bit of let down. We stopped into Pizzeria Avellino after a visit to the Palace of Fine Arts for Emotion Air. It was an easy 5-7 minute walk (with kids!) so we could keep our parking spot and only a slight incline so manageable for small legs. I appreciated the ability to buy pizza by the slice since my kids like different kinds of pizza and won't finish a whole pie. This sound silly but the fries were AMAZING. Super crispy and they had an outside layer of deliciousness. The service was top notch including wiping down the table for us without asking and cutting the large slices in half to make them easier for the kids to handle. The close proximity to the Palace was a huge plus and we will definitely stop in again when we are back in the area. read more

I tried the combo and it only took a few minutes of reheating. There was the standard parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning and red chili flakes on the table. It was easy to schedule the delivery a week in advance, the delivery showed up on time, and the food was amazing / everyone loved it. I will be ordering from here again next time there is an opportunity at a work event. Well darn. Just slightly disappointed, not much flavor to the pizza. It needs more flavor in the crust and sauce otherwise the potential is absolutely there. It has very little grease which is fantastic!! Absolutely love that!! It really gives you a New York style feel. Just lacks flavor. Maybe it's just the day we came in. The mozzarella sticks are just average and the dipping sauce was lacking flavor. His customer service was friendly he politely told us he was closing in 35 mins and said we could stay to eat but we took it to go anyways.
