I was nearby Gioia Pizzeria and decided to give them a try. I got a slice of the Julian and the pizza was really tasty! The shop is small with just a couple seats, so it's mainly a takeout spot. However you can easily just take the pizza to the Patricia's Green park and enjoy it there. I would definitely recommend them for pizza and look forward to coming back if I'm in Hayes Valley again! read more

Ordered delivery from the Hayes St. location last night and the pizza arrived looking like it had been carried sideways the entire trip. The entire pizza had shifted in the box, slices were folded over, grease was splattered all over the lid, and it was no longer hot by the time it arrived. What made this even more frustrating was the amount paid for delivery. In addition to the food cost, I paid a $3.99 delivery fee, a $5.70 service fee, and tipped the driver $5.50. For that kind of added cost, I think it's reasonable to expect the pizza to arrive level, intact, and hot. The restaurant is about 4 miles from my house, and it appeared the delivery was made by bicycle, which may explain why the pizza ended up tilted and damaged during transport. I can't say that for certain, but something clearly went wrong between the restaurant and my door. The pizza itself may have been good fresh out of the oven, but the delivery experience completely ruined it. read more

My husband double parked while I ran in and came out with 4 slices of pizza ($5.25/slice) and an aloha vibes beer for just under $25 thanks to a free slice from their loyalty rewards. I loved the variety of flavors they had per slice. The seating area inside is very small - only 1 table and a seat by the window. This place is definitely more of a togo vibe. I love discovering new places, and especially when it's for what most would consider to be basics. There is absolutely nothing basic about Gioia pizzeria. It's anything but. This is probably one of the most authentic Italian pizzerias that I have found in San Francisco. The customer service is top-notch, and the staff will make you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door, to being seated, and your mule is brought to the table. Things to immediately love about Gioia's. You can either order a whole pizza or pizza by the slice. I haven't found many places that offer pizza by the slice and have so many options to choose from. Diners tip: order the garlic knots! You will thank me later. They are light, fluffy, and each bite is a taste bomb. They are garlic, cheesy, and pull part so easily. You literally cannot stop eating them. For me, I would drive back to the city just to have the garlic knots. The last time I had anything comparable to this was that one of my favorite pizza places in Los Angeles. So I'm pretty excited to have found something a lot closer to home. They serve it with a marinara sauce that is tasty, but I actually would not minded if it had a little bit more kick to it. We ordered a couple of different slices so that we could try a few things out. Funghi pizza slice. The mushrooms were absolutely delectable and the cheese was perfectly melted in the combo together was absolutely deliciousness in each bite. Specialty gabagool pizza. The pepperoni was crispy and it had that nice bite of spice that makes you want another bite over and over again. This is that absolutely perfect pizza. The ricotta mail out the pepperoni and the combo together. I didn't know pizza could taste this delicious! Both pizzas had that perfect crest that was both crispy, crunchy with just the right amount of that doughy goodness. It's exactly what Pizza should be! Great customer service. Great atmosphere. It's a great place for date night, family time, or just hanging in with friends. This place is so deserving of five stars! Go for the great food, the great Customer Service and a great experience! One of my favourite pizzerias in SF! They serve thin crust pizzas as well as individual slices. The pizza leans to the thinner side, probably even thinner than a typical NYC pizza slice and not as crispy. They have unique flavours that are on the healthier side and their veggie options are delicious. I especially like the fungi pizza. Still a solid lunch pizza spot - they raised their prices and slices got a little bit smaller but hey! It is what it is. I'm willing to spend 75 cents more and the unsizable smaller slice for the taste and ease! I always think the service is great because the pizza comes out timely and there are no frills. SMALL cozy spot with not much seating - so be aware that you may have to take the slice to the park down the street! My slice hit the spot. I didn't have a lot of time and walked to the park to enjoy. It came out hot and the thin crust was nice and crispy, New York style. The big-city ordering with the gruff cashier at the end of the confusing line through people waiting in the cramped space was also an on-brand sort of adventure, and not in a very fun way - but good food conquers all and i enjoyed the slice. Chill pizza shop with slices ready to be warmed up, a few salad options and grab and go drinks in the fridge. You can also order whole pies. There's only one table for four and a cushioned window seat. Ordered the Salciccia and Julian slices. As we were waiting the window seat opened up and we took it over. Slices were ready relatively fast and were absolutely delicious! Service was friendly quick and easy and patient while we deliberated on which slices we wanted to try! The kale was crispy and complemented the other ingredients nicely on the Julian. The Salciccia was absolutely delicious thanks to the pickled jalapeños. 10/10 recommended and will definitely be back. If no seats available you can always take your pizza to nearby Patricia's Green to enjoy out in the park. read more

I've ordered takeout from Gioia twice. As a collegian on the Peninsula, I grew up on Frankie, Johnny and Luigi Too! pizza. It was my favorite for 50 years until a couple weeks ago when I ordered a delivery of Gioia. Wow. I stayed over in The City again this past weekend and had Gioia delivered again Saturday. I designed my own pizza with a Margherita Pizza base and then added pepperoni, Calabrian chilis, and anchovy on the side...well done/crispy. The roasted tomatoes are key...depth of flavor, umami-heaven. I'm a pain in the ass, so I call to make sure my pizza is made to spec. The staff, led by Kait, is unparalleled in their willingness to help. I just cannot recommend Gioia enough. I wish there were one in the 925, but Berkeley is as close to my home as a Gioia is based so far. I've not had a pie from Berkeley, but I believe Gioia is completely committed to maintaining the quality of their pizza. Nothing else comes close IMO. I know there's no zealot like a convert...but I'm not just being a fan boy. Oh yeah...the arugula-avocado salad is YUM, and the dressing for it like crack. DO not forget to check the box for utensils. I did not...California is a request the utensils state...and that's how I know how committed Gioia is to customer service: Kait, CALLED ME today after she'd heard I was frustrated. This pizza surprised me so much, I was not expecting it to be so good! It's a cozy little shop in Hayes Valley with one table for four and a window seat with no table, so unless you get there at the right time, be prepared to eat standing up. You can buy pizza by the slice or whole pies, and they have a variety of salads and such if you're not in the mood for pizza. My friend and I split an Avocado & Arugula Salad, and I got a slice of the Julian. My friend got the Margherita but they accidentally slightly burned her slice so the employee gave her it and another one for free, very kind! So we split the extra piece. Avocado & Arugula Salad: 4/5, good balance of ingredients. I liked the sweetness of the raisins with the arugula, and the ripe avocado was sliced beautifully. For $15 though, I'm not sure it was worth over 3x the price of a slice of pizza. Julian: 5/5, the kale was so crispy and delicious, not too stiff at all (which is the main problem I have with kale). Great sausage as well. The crust was crispy without being dry at the bottom so that the pizza could hold its own shape well. Pleasantly surprised! I just came back from a trip to New York, and I honestly liked this piece more than some of the pizza places I had there. Margherita: 4/5, same great crust and pizza quality as the Julian. The basil tasted fresh, and the tomatoes of the sauce were plump and flavorful. Overall, greatly surprised by how much I enjoyed this place! Got their classic Margherita pizza and their asparagus pesto (sounds interesting but tastes amazing) for their red sauce they use special plum tomato's & it's game changer. I was greeted by the smell of pizza being baked literally as you stroll around Hayes street! As someone who grew up in New York, I've been on the hunt for pizza that doesn't break the bank AND reminds me of home! Gioia is very very close to that! Being a pizza connoisseur aside, their pizza is relatively cheap per slice in the Bay Area (literally $4 for a speciality slice!). You won't be disappointed because each slice is bursting with flavor! There's something that makes New York pizza unique so I'll say that it does remind me of a decent slice, could be the crust being slightly burnt, the flour, the toppings, water, etc! My favorite has to be the Julian slice it comes with sausages, kale, garlic, tomato's and cheese! Top it off with their in house Parm and pepper shakers to your hearts content as if it were like Olive Garden!! Overall, the establishment is hole in the wall ish so don't expect a sit down experience! There is some seating near their bay windows and one standing table! So take your pizza out and eat it at the iconic Hayes park. The only thing barring me from my experiences here being top notch is their service.
