Mangiare Tutto: meatball, pepperoni, bacon, peppers, onions, mushrooms and olives
    Valerie R.

Usually when I buy Groupons it turns into a mix of sadness and regret for me once I actually redeem them. I always wait until the last minute, like I did with my Groupon for Pizzeria DaVinci. Two large specialty pizzas and a 2 liter of soda, for $20? Sounds great, right? So why did it take me 4 months to use it? I'll never really know. Like John S. said, it's in the middle of nowhere. Yet, it's directly on the route we take to get from Middletown to Middlefield, Meriden and beyond. For years we've said we should stop there. So glad that the Groupon brought us there tonight. I called to place the order and mentioned the Groupon...and was met with happiness, which was a huge surprise to me. I'm jaded with Groupon and businesses that accept Groupon, I actually call it Grump-on because people generally get their grump on when you try to redeem them! Not at DaVinci. The person who took my order was so friendly and nice and even checked to confirm how long the wait would be before I got off the phone (instead of throwing out the arbitrary "20 minutes"). It was 20 minutes and my pizza was coming out of the oven as I walked in the door. It's a small place, you know that from seeing the size of the building. But it smells SO good in there! I could not wait to get my pizza. Their large pizzas are LARGE but they cut their pieces to normal size, which is much appreciated. We ordered the Mangiare Tutto (the "everything") and the Pesto. They complimented each other nicely, one was heavy, the other much lighter. The Pesto had so much garlic, which I absolutely love. The crust - not my favorite. It held up well even on the everything pizza, but had a Pizza Hut-ish quality to it that I can't describe. Buttery? Flaky? I'm not sure. It wasn't bad per se...more like fine. But I'm also a pizza snob and I know it, so I can't downgrade for that. Most people would probably like it, I was just raised on New Haven pizza with a tasty crust and a good char. Even without a Groupon, DaVinci is an excellent value for the size of the pizza and quality of the toppings, given the price. And they have Foxon Park sodas, I was able to get two 1-liter bottles and got to enjoy some birch beer and some root beer. Ahhhh.... We will definitely be back. I apologize to the owners of this wonderful place that it took us so long to get here!!

Davinci has been my top choice. Recently, the pizza was terrible. The crust was soggy, and the pizza had little cheese.

This is the best pizza anywhere. The staff is pleasant and the food is really good. Whoever owns it now is doing a great job.

Great thin crust pizza without the schlep down to New Haven. Very friendly staff who you don't mind leaving a tip to either!

I think I ordered online for takeout and my order was ready within a reasonable time. I ordered a large chicken pesto specialty pizza and a small specialty pizza with standard pizza mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, and piped ricotta. I also ordered a penne all vodka and chicken cutlet. The crust on both pizzas was very good. Good char. A good mix of crispy and chewy. The chicken pesto pizza was terrific. It has chicken cutlet slices, pesto, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and ricotta. Really every part of this pizza was great. Highly recommend. I ordered the 3 cheeses specialty pizza almost out of curiosity, because I've never seen anybody go all in on those cheeses like that. The good news is, that within that pizza, were the components of a very good pizza. The blend of these cheeses didn't completely work for me flavor-wise though. Also, these cheeses produced a bit too much grease. I'd order just the sauce and standard mozzarella next time and I bet it would be very good. The penna alla vodka was a chunky sauce version. The noticeable chunks were mostly onions. I'm used to more of a blended version. I respect that this dish has its own vibe, but I personally prefer a blended version. The sauce flavor was good. The chicken cutlet was very good. I bet they make a great chicken parm. Service was friendly and efficient. Apizza Heaven won't win any beauty contests. The inside is functional. There were a few tables. The outside could use some attention. There were a few random things around the general area. I definitely noticed them when I was walking in. I think people would have a better first impression if those details are taken care of. Overall, I'd rate my experience 4.25 Stars. But I could definitely see getting up to 4.5 or 4.75 on future visits.

Over the past 2 years the service & food quality has been in steady decline. My most recent visit was inexcusable and I won't return. We decided to visit for "reverse happy hour" as an alternative from our usual thirsday night visit to Esca. We had Michael for our server and sat upstairs in the lounge. We were brought menus as we were sat and we ordered drinks to start, but weren't sure on food yet. Our server then proceeded to visit our table 4 times over the next 15 minutes to ask if we wanted to place a food order. It felt rushed. The vibe : awkward. The music was so loud I couldn't hear my server, my date or anything else besides the droning voice of Amy Grey. She had no spacial awareness and didn't know when to shut up. Incessantly talking over every song and not realizing that a bar gig is inherently different from the radio. The food : mediocre. We ordered steak frites from the happy hour menu which noted that the steak was "marinated". The 4 piece of tepid steak that came to our table were covered in this cloyingly sweet sauce that tainted the entire dish. Since the steak was served atop the fries, this sauce caused the fries (straight from the Sysco box) to become soggy and absorb the sauce which made the fries not so appetizing. We followed that up with a Cheese Pizza which was pretty good. The pizza here is their saving grace, and this place would do much better as just a slice shop. The drinks : abysmal. I started with a Skittles fruited sour from Transcend Brewery that Sicily had on tap. I was excited because it's rare to find their beer on tap outside of the brewery. It was served in the wrong glass. The F&B manager at Sicily needs to do a better job at making sure the bar is properly serving drinks. Teku glasses are essential for fruited sours. It didn't taste the same as it did in the brewery, however, for $6 I decided to just chalk it up to inexperience. I followed the beer with a Paloma, which was advertised as $5 for happy hour. When I ordered from my server I pointed at the menu showing the tequila listed for $5. As soon as I tasted the drink that was brought to me, i knew it was way off. I asked my server to ask the bartender what was in the drink because it didn't taste right. He told me that the bartender said "grapefruit juice", which is not the proper mixer for a Paloma. A Paloma only has 3 ingredients - Grapefruit Soda (Squirt or Jarritos are acceptable), Tequila & Lime Juice - it's a very simple cocktail. If you didn't have grapefruit soda, which is the main ingredient in the drink, just tell me that... I would have picked something else. The service : Impersonal & rushed. When i sent back the drink, the affect of our server visibly changed, almost as if he was angry or insulted that I would send back a drink that wasn't made properly. He asked if I would like something else, but my confidence in the bartender to make a proper drink had waned and I stuck with water for the rest of the night. My date continued with a 3rd glass of wine. About 10 minutes after this, my date got up to use the restroom, and our server came over and handed me a box for the remaining pizza, without asking if we would like anything else or if my date was done with her wine. He whisked away the half full glass and dropped our check effectively ending our visit. We weren't ready to leave. My date came back to the table and asked where the rest of her drink was and I explained the our server cleared the table and dropped the check. She said "I guess it's time to go". The nail in the coffin was when I picked up the check to see that I was charged for a $16 "Casamigos" cocktail. So i suppose if i had continued to drink the Paloma he would have been happy to charge me $16 for a $5 happy hour drink. The whole experience was off-putting and we didn't feel welcome. It felt as if our server was just trying to turn tables as fast as possible. I won't be returning and recommend others to stay far away.
