Read a bunch of reviews before going in, and quite a few mentioned how their orders were wrong....and yup, that happened to me too. After I got my order, I quickly glanced through the bag to double check bc of those Yelp reviews, but the errors they made were not visible until all the items were opened up right before eating (annoying!!!). THE BAD: Baked knish came as a fried knish, and the pastrami sandwich was put on whole wheat bread instead of rye. What crazy person eats pastrami on whole wheat?? I have no idea, but it was stinkin' annoying. The bread on the bottom of the Reuben was burnt as well, and I waited quite a while for my order. I think the restaurant needs a Gordon Ramsay type person behind the counter to check orders as they're being made, bc if it's a consistent issue, someone should be addressing it. THE GOOD: why is this pastrami so freaking good?? Texture was perfect, less greasy chunks of fat than other places, perfectly seasoned and not overwhelming amount of pepper and salt and other seasoning....I could eat the pastrami all on its own all day long. Other than the burnt bread, Reuben sandwich was delicious, too. Overall, the multiple issues with my order make me not want to come here again, but I may bc of how delicious the pastrami was. On the food itself, I feel like this place is a solid 4.5-5 stars, but very few things are more annoying than crappy execution and no attention to detail that you only discover after you've left the restaurant and are about to start eating. If I do go back, I'll prob be the crazy lady who opens up all the food packaging to double check before I leave the restaurant! read more

I came in at 2pm in the afternoon for a late lunch, it was just me. I sat outside. When I first got there, I went inside to ask for a table outside, the 'host' looked at me like it had three heads, like that was the most ridiculous thing he'd ever heard. I then got sat, but he didn't give me a menu, so I sat for about 5 minutes, with no menu. Finally a busser came out and gave me water and asked if I needed a menu, I kindly said yes. Soon after the waitress came out and I ordered. She was nice. I ordered a coffee and an omelette. The coffee never came. The omelette came but I didn't get utensils and no one came back to check in. If you grew up loving those old style Jewish - style Deli's, you'll be delighted to visit and dine at P.J. Bernstein's restaurant. We were looking for a restaurant to celebrate a very special occasion and decided to have lunch at P.J. Bernstein's and we had a fantastic culinary experience. I had the Cobb Salad snd while I envisioned a big bowl with chopped up greens, chicken, eggs and bacon, I was astonished to receive a huge plate with at least a half pound of delicious chicken served in long strips, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, a whole hard boiled egg, crispy bacon and delicious greens. It was a huge amount of food but everything was so delicious, I had to eat everything on my plate! My friends had huge BLT's and an avocado salad served with fresh and delicious shrimp salad. Everything we ate was outstanding and our waitress and waiters kept filling our water snd making sure we had everything we needed to be totally thrilled with our meals. In addition to our dining experience, the manager checked our vaccination cards and checked our licenses when we entered and if you are interested, they had the cleanest and coolest bathrooms of any restaurant I've been at on the upper east side! I ordered delivery from these guys after having walked past them while attending a UES street fair the other week. I ordered a pastrami and corned beef sandwich that came with your traditional pickles and even a little side of coleslaw that was on the sweeter, yummier side. With that, I also got a white fish platter, which came with a bagel and your typical accoutrements and surprisingly cream cheese. The order arrived within the delivery window. All in all the sandwich and whitefish salad are what you expect for typical Deli food. Price was average as well. No complaints here. read more

We went here for quick dinner since near the hospital where we were visiting and where family member lives. We ordered approximately $50.00 of food. One entree we were told came with coleslaw and pickles. While waiting for order asked if i could have some more coleslaw. ( No Problem i was told) . When we received the bill i saw a $6.50 charge for the coleslaw and an upcharge for a bowl of soup even though we ordered a soup and half sandwich and never asked for a bowl as compared to a cup so i was surprised by upcharge and let it go since we received more soup so no big deal. When I asked waitress why i was charged for the coleslaw she said second order is not free. I asked her why she did not tell me and if she had i would not have ordered it. Her response is she did not have to tell me. I asked for the manager who came over and said when he tells people they get mad and a side order of coleslaw on the menu says $6.50. I asked him if they get mad about them charging for additional coleslaw what do the say when they get the bill without being told which should make them more angry. He refused to adjust the bill even though i told him i am in neighborhood often and would never come back since they were so dishonest even though the food was fine even if extremely overpriced. His response to this was he has to pay the rent. At $25.00 for a sandwich i think the coleslaw overcharge should not keep him from paying the rent. While a couple paying $50.00 for dinner at a Deli and never returning might be more of an issue. I will never be back nor will anyone i know based on the unethical pricing and poor customer service. read more

My rating is for the quality of the Corned Beef sandwich. This was such a super let down. I mean, for a Jewish Delicatessen this was an atrocious sandwich...!!!! I had to examine the meat and it looked simply processed and that is not what I was expecting from a twenty dollar sandwich. .... And I know my Corned Beef Sandwiches!!!!!! It hardly tasted good. I will not name the excellent competitors out of respect but P.J. Bernstein, please do Corned Beef correctly!! I honestly feel for the hungry real jewish people out there who are expecting a quality corned beef sandwich. To be fair, their other wares may be fine. Even very good. But I highly recommend that anyone not try their corned beef, pastrami, or brisket even. It's the same cut and surprisingly hard to not do right. Upsetting. I was so hoping this was one of the last Jewish delis for a reason. Sadly this is not the case. i Had the worst tasteless soggy tuna melt of my life combined with a soggy fatty and thin spread reheated Reuben. Restaurants like this should not be able to serve such awful food seriously. Spend a but more and go to Sarges or Second Avenue deli. read more

So I walked in there... service a little slow. They tried to charge me so 12$ for a 5.99$ Soup ... ridic. It wasn't even that good. they barely put any mayo on my sandwich .. anything to save penny's I guess . I dont think they're hurting that bad for $- they r on a busy st and the place was very clean and a lot of employees (just kinda sitting doing nothing... I guess they can afford to pay them with that 12$ soup they just charged me). I feel taken advantage of - not a good feeling . I never like to give negative reviews it just isn't my thing. However I do feel as though it is ok to say it wasn't worth the money. I got a cup of soup and half of sandwich and it was $22. Also the service isn't very good & it took over an hour to get my order which was simple. Best spot for comfort food and Jewish deli classics. Ordered for delivery yesterday and it came with the quality I always expect from here! Got matzoh ball soup + a tuna salad sandwich on rye, and it was all great. We also got a Reuben, which is loaded with melted cheese and meat served open face on rye - absolutely delicious. P.s. they were able to get a nice amount of space for outdoor dining due to COVID, so you can now go eat outside there as well! Highly recommend. read more

My mother has been going here for a long time for their tongue sandwich and she says it is the best in the city. I finally went to try their tongue sandwich this weekend and got some tongue to go from the deli. It was great! Rodolfo from the front deli section helped me; he was so nice, friendly and professional and very carrying with listening to the exact cut I wanted from the tongue. I am definitely going back to this deli. Also, the sandwich is very generous in meat and the pickles and mustard add to the flavor! I recommend this place. Mi mamá ha estado yendo aquí durante mucho tiempo por el sándwich de lengua y dice que es el mejor de la ciudad. Finalmente fui a probar el sándwich de lengua este fin de semana y me pedí un poco de lengua para llevar. ¡Fue muy rico! Desperate for quick corned beef fix on a quick visit to Manhattan, I came here because it was 2 blocks from my appointment on a 95° summer day. The "hot" corned was barely above temperature and texture was tough, although flavor was good. Service was warm and friendly. We had not eaten at PJ Bernstein since the onset of the Covid pandemic. Last night we had two pastrami sandwiches delivered to our apartment, 18 blocks away. The order arrived in 20 minutes from the restaurant's own delivery person, perfectly packaged and still warm. The pastrami was extraordinary, as good as any pastrami we have had, including from Katz's. It was perfectly seasoned, hand sliced and succulent without being excessively fatty. Just placed an order for a couple of sandwiches and soup. The delivery was 45 mins over the eta of 30 mins. The soup was ice cold and the $20 turkey sandwich was not even close to a $8 sandwich. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

We went for breakfast and left full and satisfied. Our omelette was cooked to order perfectly and the latkes were amazing- crisp on the outside with just the right amount of "fluff" inside! We also ordered challah French toast, which I found a tad too soggy, but my dining companion thought was perfect. Our server was funny, kind, and met us with a smile. read more

Very under rated Jewish deli that serves up hearty home style yummy nosh. Excellent pastrami, brisket, and corned beef. Now these sandwiches are not these enormous sandwiches that many of the well known jewish delis in NYC serve, they are also not $22/ea. Well portioned sandwiches at a good price (ie. $15.95). Awesome latkes. Delicious hearty soups (split pea, mushroom barley are sooo good! Love the matzo ball..). Pricing is less expensive than other Jewish delis in the area. Old school diner style atmosphere. This place never changes, which is just fine by me... Been coming by since my college days back in the 1990s. I order delivery these days and it always satisfies. My friend and I had the WORST waffles ever today. Our first order arrived BURNT and we sent them back. Our second order came slightly burnt and ice cold. I suggest that they either get a new waffle iron, a new chef or remove waffles from their menu. My friend and I have eaten there many times. This once good deli has turned into a complete garbage dump. My wife picked up an order today and upon returning home discovered that they gave her the wrong package. She call the restaurant to request that they deliver the correct order but the "manager" refused. When she returned to pick up the correct order the manager tried to physically intimidate her. I went here for lunch the other day, since it was recommended by a co-worker.. and I wasn't all that impressed. First of all, everything here is extremely overpriced. I know, we're on the Upper East Side, but come on. The sandwiches are quite expensive, and the homemade 'perogen' (AKA pierogies) I got were $10.50. $10.50!! There were about 6 pierogies on the plate, and they came with sauteed/slightly burnt onions and sour cream. I've had much better pierogies elsewhere - and for much cheaper! The service was decent, but everyone around us got their food before us. I ordered the perogen and my coworker ordered a cheeseburger. I don't get what took so long, but I didn't complain. As we left, I waited at the counter to pay the check, where the cashier rudely snapped "Can I help you?" as if I was standing there for no good reason. That's when I pointed out the check in front of me that I wanted to pay.. and then she lightened up, realizing she was getting an attitude for no good reason. This is a great kosher style restaurant! We ordered our food via seamless (my latest obsession). We had: Matzo ball soup - delicious Knish (not fried) - so so good! Pastrami Sandwich - terrific Roast Beef with Cheese Sandwich - Great and rare Tuna Fish Salad - Very good In my opinion, this place is better than 2nd Avenue Deli. The staff is really nice - they called us when they didn't have a plain bagel for my daughter's tuna fish. We will definitely order from them again! read more
