A Sweet Experience... My wife had a milestone birthday approaching and I wanted to get a special cake for her party with friends and family. After reading lots of reviews on Yelp, I called Pam at PK's Cakes. We were not disappointed. Ratings: - Overall: 5 - Ease of Ordering: 5 - Cake Selection: 5 - Customization: 5 - Day of Pick-Up: 5 - Crowd Reaction: 5 - Price: 4 - Value: 5 - Ease of Ordering: Simple. I called Pam, explained the situation and what my wife liked. Pam asked several follow-up questions before we settled on ingredients, appearance and arrangements to get the cake at her house in Arroyo Grande (closer to Cypress Ridge than the village part of AG). She bakes everything in her kitchen. - Cake Selection: Huge. Pam is a cake artist so the choice is basically limited by your imagination and her suggestions. - Customization: Almost anything. We got a 7 inch round layer cake meant to serve 15 people. My wife called it "an artistic version of strawberry shortcake" which is just what she wanted. The top had a yellow rose with sage green leaves and baby's breath sugar flowers. Since her main hobby is ceramics, Pam suggested adding 2 sculpted pots on the side (check out the photo). - Day of Pick-Up: Easy. I ordered this cake 9 days before the expected pick-up which was one day before the party. Pam had it ready-to-go on a strong cake board in a nice, large, sturdy box and helped me find the safest place in my car for the 10 minute drive home. I kept it in that box in our refrigerator at home. - Crowd Reaction: Great. Typical comments were..."what a fine looking cake" and "it tastes so good without being too sweet". - Price: Not cheap. Remember...this is a highly customized cake literally created by a baking artist. Our cake was $175 plus $50 for the hand-carved decorations. - Value: Excellent. We got just what we paid for. PKs worked with me to design a custom cake for my birthday party, and I thought it sounded good-- but when I saw the finished product I was blown away by how gorgeous and perfect it was-- absolutely stunning and creative. People at the party admired it for how beautiful it was. Then we ate it-- and OMG that was even better! Delicious vanilla sponge, moist and flavorful with homemade raspberry jam between layers, all covered with a thin layer of white chocolate ganache-- fantastic! Her pricing is fair for the amount of work she puts into every little detail. I told her my sisters's wedding colors and some very loose ideas and let her take it from there. She exceeded our expectations ten fold (especially considering my sister was expecting a premade grocery store cake). My family is incredibly grateful for Pam's hard work and accommodation. I wish I could give the same kind of a review that the other customers did especially because Pam is such a nice person, but unfortunately I was very disappointed with the cake. We ordered a simple vanilla cake with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting for my son's first birthday. For the decorations we asked for some colorful balls on the top. First of all the cake was not packed well for transportation. The box was way too small and fit only half the cake's height which meant that the lid could not be closed and was difficult to transport. Bringing it to a house on a hill made it even more difficult. Fortunately our friend who held the cake had amazing balancing skills. The cake looked amazing and I appreciated that the balls were made of white chocolate and not fondant. It was disappointing that a professional baker would not offer Swiss meringue or Italian meringue buttercream frosting but we knew we were getting regular buttercream, so it's not Pam's fault. The cake itself tasted pretty bad though. I bake cakes for friends and families all the time and I know a thing or two about them. The cake was not fluffy. It was somewhat gooey and sticking to the palate probably because of over-mixing the batter or frosting before cooling it completely...not sure. Both the cake and the frosting were too sweet. The buttercream was crusty because of too much sugar. No one could eat more than a sliver of the cake and no one wanted seconds. I am sorry to say this but I wouldn't recommend PK's cakes. We definitely didn't have a good experience especially for the price we paid. On the bright side, the cake looked good in the pics. read more

Pam makes the most beautiful and unique sugar flowers I have ever seen, uses white chocolate instead of fondant to give the cakes a perfect look, and has great cake and filling selections that actually make the cake enjoyable to eat! Additionally, it all comes at a reasonable cost. If you're interested, would highly recommend a cake tasting too. She allows you to mix and match so you can try a little bit of everything. This is the best birthday cake I have ever had. The cake is moist for days, and the frosting is actually edible (not like normal fondant). It tastes like something out of a French bakery. Pam went above and beyond! I planned a last-minute party for my daughter's 16th birthday and with not much time to plan and with other cakes on her calendar, Pam was willing to make it work so that we would have a custom cake for my daughter's birthday. Pam took the time to sketch out ideas and meet with me to go over what she had come up with. When I arrived, I was able to taste the DELICIOUS raspberry filing she had just made and a chocolate cupcake! Pam makes all of her cakes with only the most natural and freshest ingredients and you can definitely taste the difference. She had sketched out ideas and we were able to look over the different designs and colors and within just a short time we had the whole design of the cake decided on. I mentioned that I loved fondant cakes for the designs, but not the taste. Pam informed me that she was able to create the same look of a fondant cake using a unique butter cream frosting that she makes. She also mentioned that she is able to replace the milk with cocoanut milk, which was a bonus as we have milk allergies in our family. I was a bit skeptical that with these changes the cake would still taste/look good, but willing to chance it as I had already tasted her cake and was hoping to have more. . . .She was absolutely right! Tthe cake looked JUST like a fondant cake AND tasted like a fresh bakery cake. I also decide to do her brownie cake and it was the perfect combination of cake and brownie in one. Pam's cakes are absolutely AMAZING! I was a little nervous we wouldn't have enough cake for everyone and Pam surprised me with about a dozen cupcakes that she had left over from another order.
