Was with a tour group staying at the hotel. We had a lovely experience with afternoon tea at the Fairmont Hotel in Banff Springs so we decided to make a reservation for tea at this hotel as well. We were promptly seated and given water. A different server came to take our order and we already knew which teas we wanted. Our food arrived shortly afterwards and was delightful. There was also a pianist in the adjoining room playing Christmas songs. Afternoon tea is not inexpensive, especially with local and national tax, but it is a lovely treat for yourself. Six at our table, visiting Quebec and Chateau Frontenac from North Carolina, and one had the brilliant idea some weeks ago that we should get an afternoon tea while we're in town. Best. idea. ever. It gave us plenty of time to chat with each other, graze our way through pots of tea and three tiers of awesomeness, plus every spare inch of space on the table was filled with "additional" desserts. We compared favorites at the end and a few things rose above the crowd, but even our "meh" items within this extensive list would have been pretty darn good on any other list, it's just that the bar was set so high, and still the superlatives were surprisingly topped. The only thing that would make this better would be a printout of what was on the table once everything was served, because even though the servers explained everything, there was so much, we had to repeated ask them on their return loops what some of the items were. (There's a tea house near home that does that consistently and it makes our lives better.) When all's said and done, two of us liked the lavender-citrus dessert best UNTIL trying the strawberry shortcake dessert and then both changed their favorite to that. Two of us liked the smoked salmon best, but dealt with it differently -- it was on the bottom layer with the savories, so we both tried it first, but one ate it all up right away and the other saved it after the first bit and finished it last, after the sweets. One liked her pot of tea best -- she'd gone with #3, the Grand Bazaar Spice, which has cardamom, cloves, and anise, and which actually 3 at the table chose for their tea. (The other ones picked were Creamy Earl Grey, Imperial Breakfast, and Ontario Ice Wine.) And the final favorite was the hazelnut cream puff. My wife and I came here for afternoon tea while staying at the Chateau Frontenac. The tea and the food were wonderful. We particularly loved the blueberry tea and we bought some from the hotel store to bring home. Nice views of Terrace Dufferin as well. Service was great despite it being full. Good thing we made a reservation. For an even greater and more authentic tea experience also try the Drawing Room at the Prince of Wales Hotel on Niagara on the Lake and we look forward to having more tea in Canada, particularly in Victoria. read more

WONDEFUL BREAKFASTS AT CHATEAU FRONTENAC While at a seminar hosted at Chateau Frontenac, we enjoyed a daily breakfast buffet catered by the hotel. Although our buffet was probably not as extensive as the $49 breakfast buffet at Place Dufferin, we enjoyed many items offered on the a la carte breakfast menu. Among the breakfast choices were different egg preps: luscious scrambled eggs made with cream, a spinach frittata, coddled eggs with sausage and a plain but rich quiche. Thin slices of bacon, juicy breakfast sausages and thick tender and juicy slices of ham (not salty or overseasoned) were offered on different mornings. The daily continental spread included croissants, chocolate croissants and different varieties of viennoiseries (laminated Danish with different fruit fillings and caramelized nut fillings). In addition to jams and jellies, there was the added treat of honey harvested by Chateau Frontenac beekeepers from the hotel's own rooftop hive boxes. Also had my first taste of the Quebecois pork spread known as creton. Some of the decadent breakfast specials were more dessert than breakfast - the maple syrup crepes were thin crepes rolled in maple syrup that came with a side of more maple syrup; the bread pudding was incredibly rich; and the waffles would have been just waffles but for the accompanying large bowls of heavenly thick Chantilly cream and dark chocolate sauce. Only a few misses - the French toast was very dry and not eggy at all. The fruit in the cut fruit salad was overripe and too soft resulting in a watery salad. read more

We went for the high tea held at the Chateau Frontenac during the afternoon. As always, make sure you have a reservation a head of time. The atmosphere and seating is quite nice, and you can inside but with a view of the boardwalk near the river. The seating is on the lower level unfortunately, so no sky views. The French (and Canadians/Quebecois) are not known for their tea culture, and it shows quite strongly in this so called "high tea." The little petitfours are fine and tasty (the sweet ones are the best), but the tea itself is poorly made, and for a meal called "high tea", this should be the most important part. How is the tea poorly made? The restaurant simply pours hot water (near boiling) on the tea you choose, no matter if it's a green tea, white tea, or black tea. This is a big no-no for anyone who actually enjoys good tea. Green tea must be steeped only around 175 degrees fahrenheit. Any higher risks burning the tea and causing it to oversteep. The staff had no apparatus or way to measure the water temperature! No wonder most people think green tea is too bitter or astringent--it's because it's always made incorrectly. The second issue is the way the tea is steeped. You are given a pot of your tea infusion and then hot water is just poured into. What's the problem here? After the first infusion, all the next teas made with those same leaves are going to start tasting really bitter and oversteeped. Pretty much after the very first cup, both of our teas were inevitably oversteeped. This led to a too strong, bitter, and astringent flavor that would not go away. The staff wouldn't replace the tea leaves, explaining you're limited to a single tea. They would pour more hot water but this would not fix the flavor since now the leaves were releasing their bitter compounds. The third issue, the staff demands that you steep your own tea! For a price of around $75 CAD, you are expected to make your own tea. To properly infuse the tea without making it bitter requires timing it with a clock (e.g. on smart phone). The staff just pours the hot water to start the infusion, tells you how long to steep it, and up to your to keep track. I have gotten better infused teas and service at random cafes for less than $5 USD or CAD. How to improve this experience? The staff should take a course and training on how to actually make tea: green, white, black, etc. All the teas should be premade and presteeped to perfection. Then simply reheat the tea (or leave cold) and serve to the guests. No need for the guests to steep their own tea. For $75 CAD, this should be the default. It doesn't matter how good your tea leaves are, if you steep them wrong it's going to be a bad tea. So I cannot recommend coming here for anyone who wants an actually good tea. Maybe high tea always tastes bad or the British don't know how to drink tea? At $75 CAD, the staff should be brewing each of your teas FOR YOU, not lazily pouring you hot water and expecting you to know the steeping times. The water temperature depends upon the tea being made as well. read more

Located in the beautiful hotel Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. Their breakfast is $35/person or you can order items a-la-carte if you don't want the full breakfast. We got their around 10:00 a.m. We waited about 30 minutes for our party of 4 to be seated. Although our waitress, Isabelle, was very friendly and did her best considering how busy they were, service was a bit slow. It took quite some time for us to receive our food, however, everything tasted good (with exception of cheese blintz; too much bread not enough cheese filling), and was well worth the price. The oatmeal was a bit bland (maybe would have been better if I put the maple syrup in it that came on the side). Nevertheless, it's definitely convenient especially if you're staying at the hotel. There's creamy scrambled eggs, eggs Benedict on muffins, bacon, Maple syrup ham, sausages, crepes with Maple syrup of course, bread pudding, an array of pastries, fresh loaves of bread (I prefer the flaky croissants) and bagels (there's a toaster as well), an assortment of fruits, cold cuts, smoked salmon, 4 different types of cheeses made in Quebec and a fruit tart for dessert. There's a plethora of fruit juices and fresh coffee. If you want to fill up before a long day exploring the beauty that is Quebec City, this would be a great option! This was a very nice venue and experience. We came for the High Tea as soon as we arrived from the airport and the States - and it was a nice way to settle into the hotel and catch your breath after travel. Place Dufferin is generally the restaurant for breakfast, but in the afternoon it breaks down for the High Tea. It is a nice spread out room with comfy seats and wonderful views. For the High Tea - a taste of Kombucha to begin, then we are seated and - after looking at the menu - we ordered our teas. Eventually (nicely spaced out - and don't quote me on the exact order of everything else) a selection of fruit arrives, followed by scones/biscuits with three jams, small sandwiches which seemed mostly salmon based, and finally a few dessert sweets to balance out your palate. The hit of the experience is definitely the teas - wonderful selection and brewed properly at the table. This was a nice High Tea and the only recommendation I would make is to have the different sandwiches more distinctive and diverse ... as it was, they pretty much all tasted the same - but don't let this small gripe keep you away. We were offered breakfast for two at Place Dufferin for booking with Hotels and Fine Resorts through American Express. Breakfast gave us full access to the buffet brunch. They have pastries, toast, fish, cheese, yogurts, as well as a selection of hot foods. They have bacon, sausages, eggs, potatoes, beans, crepes, waffles, and maple bacon, which was our favorite. You can order omelettes or eggs Benedict. For drinks, there is a large selection of juices, orange, apple, grapefruit, etc. and they offer everyone coffee. They have tea and milks available to order. The view is great, and they offer newspapers and magazines if you are dining alone. Highly recommend for high tea! I had never had a high tea experience before, so when my husband and I saw this - we knew we needed to go. When we arrived we were greeted with a small glass of kombucha. No idea if that's normal or not - but it was delicious. Then we ordered our tea, I got the earl grey and my husband the jasmine dragon. Both were the delicious. The jasmine tea smelled decadent - I want to bottle that scent. We were then brought small bowls of fruit with apricot jam. The apricot jam was amazing. The next round of snacks was the "salt tour" and it was a few small sandwiches, some cheese, and shrimp and salmon. I didn't eat the sea food, but my husband said it was amazing. The small sandwiches and cheese bites were so yummy! Next they brought scones with butter and jams. The scones reminded me of an American biscuit. This was probably my favorite of the "courses". Finally they brought dessert and it was a plate of small homemade candies and three desserts - a small cake, a tart, and a chocolate/coffee thing. Do not go to the high tea at this place. They charge me $75 plus $24 for a glass of wine and we literally had two biscuits and a few bites of dessert. The items they served were not even good. The only thing that was good was a scone and the tea and the mini desserts were good, but they only gave you one tiny cucumber sandwich, and one tiny smoked salmon sandwich, and like some tiny shrimp in a cracker and foie gras on a bun. I didn't eat any of that except for the cucumber sandwich and the dessert. I ended up spending about $150 for a waste of time and disgusting food. The waiter was very nice. He was offering people champagne and I told him I didn't like champagne but I would take some wine and then he came and showed me a bottle of wine and I said OK and he charged me $24 for one glass of it. Came here for the breakfast buffet. Service was very attentive and polite. Interior was very nice and cozy, but spacious. Food was really good and consistent considering it is buffet-style. Full buffet offered eggs benedict, waffles, crepes, maple bacon & regular crispy bacon, hashbrowns, sausages, and even omelettes to order. Whatever I tried was quite good. Continental buffet had an amazingly tantalizing spread of pastries, bread, yogurt, smoked fish, cheeses, etc... But there was even some surprises like duck terrine and local cheese (not just cheddar). Only complaint was that the chocolatin (pain au chocolat) was a bit dense and chewy for a pastry. Coffee is pretty good. Disclosure: We had a promotional price for the full buffet, but I think it would be worth it full price for a "treat yourself" brunch, just for the atmosphere and if you were going to spend ~$35 on a meal anyway. Cozy interior, polite staff, and if you come in driving, you can leave the car for valet and theyll give you a ticket that you can have validated on the restaurant for the free parking. I came here with my friend for the afternoon tea set. It's $55 per person. It is a set menu, you only have to choose which tea you'd like. We were greeted with kombucha in a flute glass and shown to our table. We were seated near the windows, so we had a good view. There was live performance. Great ambience. It's a five course tea set, a small fruit plate, scones and jam, savory sandwiches, desert and petit four. It's a lot of food. I recommend skipping lunch and dinner. The service was great as well.
