Checked this place out for lunch this past week, and was pleased. Sort of surprised to see the cafeteria style, but it didn't deter me from looking forward to my meal. The portions are plentiful, and will leave most with some leftovers. The food is very authentic, and I appreciate that this place diversifies Georgetown's restaurant categories. It should also be said that the staff was very friendly, and patient (we had trouble pronouncing one of the dishes). Their welcoming attitude definitely made a nice impression. Huge plates, fantastic lentil soup. Yum. Will definitely go back when in this area. We stayed at the La Quinta about a block away and went on our last day. We read a review for Plaka Greek Cafe in the Community Impact newspaper, then checked Yelp and decided to try Plaka. The food is tasty, courteous service, clean place, crisp colorful lettuce, fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and pita. We had the gyro plate which includes soup or salad. I had the lentil soup, my wife chose salad. The lentil soup was good, thick and had a slight sweetness. Plaka also serves the classic Greek chicken lemon soup (Kotosoupa Avgolemono). The owner, George who served us was very nice and personable. George has a photo of Lady Bird at Plaka, because she would visit the Greek restaurant he managed in downtown Austin. We want to go back and sample their chicken gyro, eggplant and a stuffed grape leaf. The prices are reasonable, portions are large, the food is fresh and good. Try it. read more

Plaka is crazy good. You order cafeteria style and then seat yourselves. Thus, you get your food quick! Their gyro meat and chicken is SO flavorful, it is a party in your mouth. They give you tons of food and after you finish it all you will fill the sensation of regret in your belly. hahaha I started off looking for bbq for dinner tonight and somehow or other ended up coming to Plaka. It looks like an old Church's chicken building. Nondescript inside and out. Don't let that fool you. The place was packed on a cool windy Saturday night. We would have sat on the patio had it not been so chilly. I went in for a gyro which is about the only thing I eat at a Greek diner. We went to the counter to order, the staff was friendly and capable but not exuberant (wasn't looking for that anyway) but just in case you were expecting Santa's elves behind the counter.... There is an extensive menu on the wall for such a small place. I ordered my gyro (they do not have fries, btw) and got rice as my side. Hubs ordered the gyro plate. Oh my goodness the bread is so soft and fresh. The meat was very flavorful, they weren't overly generous with the meat but it wasn't skimpy either. The condiments were crispy and freshly cut. The sauce was thick and stayed put. I tried the lemon soup which must be popular because they had a huge batch of it. But it's just not my thang and does not reflect my rating in any way. The dining area is small, spills (by that dumb family who made their little girl carry a huge heavy tray, too big for her to handle, complete with water glass filled to the brim and she, as I predicted, tipped over the glass of water all over the floor as she tried to maneuver between tables with said full tray) were cleaned up quickly and tables cleared tout de suite. Well you've lost me, sadly. See my previous reviews which show what a staunch fan of Plaka I've been. Last night I had the Greek salad again with Gyros. Literally two olives and two slices of cucumber - and very small ones at that. But worst of all was the gyro meat. Most of it was very thin 'chips' or flakes of meat. I commented on this previously but it hasn't been corrected. There's a new Greek restaurant in town that I'm eager to try. I'll continue to support local small businesses especially during this trying period. read more

Plaka is arguably the best restaurant in town. This small Greek joint serves up a delectable selection of the classic foods attributed to the nationality. The main course is usually some dish with gyro in it, a slow roasted, beautifully spiced combination of beef and lamb. Side dishes include hummus and pita, tszaziki sauce (put on everything), delicious lemon-chicken soup, and dolmades. The dolmades, or dolmas, are my favorite thing on the menu, consisting of spiced rice and lamb wrapped up in grape leaves then slow cooked. I physically (and monetarily) cannot eat as many dolmas as I want! Service is good as well, and the air is rich with Greek authenticity. The food is definitely worth it though and Plaka is a family favorite we return to time and time again. read more

I was hoping that the inside was cleaner than the outside pickup, so I won't be going back. This is my favorite type of cuisine, so I'm pretty picky. Although I'm not big on the cafeteria style set-up, the food is good and the portion are generous. I like going here for a taste of my "soul food!" I'm Greek American and now and then I need to partake of Greek food without cooking at home and this gem of a restaurant is the ticket because the food is prepared much like home made. It is authentic and I've enjoyed everything I've had from their kitchen. My favorite is the lamb shank special on Saturday evenings. But I've learned the hard way that you better get there as close to 5 p.m. as possible (or call in and place your order) or you might be out of luck because they just might run out! The only item on their menu that I am not a huge fan of is the sliced chicken gyro-style meat. It is too dry. And that's the only criticism that I have. read more

This is our second visit to Georgetown and one of the first things we did was return to a little Greek cafe to see if it was really was as good as we remembered. It was even better. We've been back twice this week and are looking forward to a third time before we leave the area. My husband had the gyro sandwich with a salad both times and I had the Plaka chicken salad and a cup of lemon chicken soup each time. The gyro was lamb and beef roasted on a vertical spit, as was the chicken, which had a wonderful mixture of spices brushed on - paprika, lemon, garlic, oregano maybe? And of course, we had a piece of the karidopita (walnut cake) with extra sauce. It was all delicious and good sized servings mean you won't go away hungry. We've only been to one other Greek restaurant that equaled the quality of food and that was The Greek Joint in Hollywood, FL. read more

This was my first time going to this restaurant. I don't know what their food was like before COVID-19, but their food today was not good. The pastichio I had was terrible. The bechamel cheese and some of the pasta was dried out. Very disappointing. I hope once the pandemic is over the quality of their food gets better. I may try them again then. read more

Worst Greek food I have ever tasted. I don't know what these five star reviews are thinking, but they sure have never had decent Mediterranean food. Let's start with the gyros, if you're advertising the freshest ingredients, why do you use a factory ground meat block instead of layering pieces of beef like you do with the chicken? Why are the pitas not authentic and store bought at Costco? How in the world do you have a Greek restaurant and not have French fries? That's like having hamburgers with no fries. Reading through the reviews, the owner just writes people off and apologizes for the bad experience. Just because you say sorry doesn't make it right! Post up your email and allow people to send in complaints and give them their money back or come in for a free meal. Lower your prices because your food does not show quality for the money. For those reading this review, take a trip to Peace bakery in Austin and get a shawarma plate with three large side dishes for the same price of what they're charging for a gyro sandwich with salad or soup. Completely overpriced. People need to have higher standards for food, it's a disgrace. read more

I have monthly appointments in Georgetown, so I've passed the sign for this place a few times and finally decided to try it. I am physically unable to eat very much, so I ordered the kids plate with gyro meat and rice pilaf. The meat was fine, but the rice was amazing! It was this amazing buttery flavor. Food is pre-made (homemade) but they will steer you to your safe foods. Humongous portions. We got 2-3 meals our of each order. I orders the sampler. Never liked Lima beans until I tried theirs.
