A local watering hole that is a local family owned business for many years. Quite the place for locals to go. It has a good sized bier garten to hang out in. Rustic bar interior. Menu has lots of great sandwiches and some salads. Known probably more for their pizzas. Wait staff have been helpful and friendly. Reasonably priced. Parking can be an issue when they are busy. There is maybe space for about a dozen vehicles or so in their parking lot - not a very big lot. So, if they are busy, you may have to drive around to find a place. read more

Boy, some people really hate this place. Not me. It is what it is, not what others may wish it to be. Hangers-on at the bar usually ogling the one or two hotties dressed up (or down, depending on your tastes). You wonder what they are trolling for in HERE. Full disclosure: I've only gone here for Sunday day drinking on the back patio. For that, this place is great. The food is pretty good, the beer is cheap, the servers are friendly the atmosphere is exactly what I'm looking for. I know that, pretty soon, this place becomes a little bit too, for lack of a better term, "adult softball". So far, though, I have been more than happy to plant here on a picnic table for a few hours and drink beer with my friends on a relatively isolated patio (unlike the other bars in the area who have a patio facing the street). I'm quite certain I will be back this weekend. The only downside I can find for this purpose is that it's pretty empty, usually. I'm not going to meet new people here. I like beer, and I like patios, so automatic 3 stars. However, for a "bier garten", their selection is not that great. I can get Blue Moon on tap anywhere. But the food is decent and the atmosphere is nice. Plus it's in my neighborhood which is always a win for me in terms of walking/taxi home. The pizza is good, patio is big but if you are looking for an all around place to dine and be treated like you are a guest drive to Grove City or across the neighborhood to the other Planks locations. Went here while touring around Columbus over the 4th of July weekend... Slightly dark and out-dated inside, (but not in a bad way, more like a 'you're in a local hole in the wall' kind of way). Got the Reuben with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. Bread makes or breaks and sandwich for me and theirs was great. Fries were good, too. Server initially told us someone would be right with us and then proceeded to pass right by at least 10 different times and completely ignored us. Went here during lunch today at a softball tournament. Went as soon as they opened. There was literally 3-4 people in there. We had a party of 25 or so. As soon. As we walked in they looked annoyed we were even there. Some jerk at the bar asked if we called ahead....uh no we didn't. He then had the balls to say "well I don't know how you expect us to accommodate you all!" He was rude and pretty much refused to serve us. They just lost a TON of money. Funny how one jerk who works at an otherwise decent place can ruin it. I was having a couple beers, making new friends and having a good time. One bartender, I forget his name, but he was short, stock, dark-haired and fairly young, was flirting with the ladies instead of doing his job, not only that he was blatantly telling me he was doing exactly that and that I would have to just wait. I then told him, "Cash me out. I'm done", which last time I checked was my right at any time. He then lost it, told me, "Get the f*** out of here and don't come back!" He practically assaulted me! Then, on top of that, after I had cashed out he tried to tell the other bartender I was causing trouble when the only thing I had ever said to him was cash me out. Solid hangout spot in German Village. Big patio, plenty of room inside, cold beer, and bratwurst dinner. We dropped in for a family pow wow on a Friday night and it was no problem to get a big table, order a ton of appetizers, then all manner of entrees (salads, chili, sandwiches, wings, and the previously-mentioned brat dinner). Textbook service, and our waiter was friendly & kind to our more distracted diners - the kids and the seniors. Summer nights, we've hit the patio to hang with the ball teams & nosh on Plank's thin and sweetly sauced pizza. Hits the spot with a lighter beer. There is a small parking lot, rare for GV. Meh. We went to this bier garten hoping either for German beers (of which there were 2 on tap) or excellent local beers (of which there was one). The selection was disappointing, the food was limited in offering (and they were out of most of the things that we were interested in eating) and our service was slooooooooow. I never mind slow service when it is busy (I've been a server), but our server would disappear for 45 minutes at a time and was distinctly uninviting when she did return. Don't let the German name of this S. High St. bar and grill fool you- the food and drink here is as American as it gets. Between the patio and the pizza specials on Tuesdays, you've got yourself one hell of a quality joint to relax with a pitcher and group of friends at any time of day. It's comforting to know that a place that's yet to be gutted and reconfigured my yuppies still exists in an otherwise overly gentrified part of town such as German Village. The interior has a rustic and woody feel to it that without a doubt has been in tact since Plank's opened for business before the turn of the century, and it's safe to assume that little about the business has changed since then. The pizza isn't the greatest as far as texture goes, but there's plenty of toppings and surface area to make everyone happy enough to look beyond its relatively modest shortcomings. Besides the mysteriously rank smell that sometimes makes its way to the front of the restaurant, there's not much else I can say about Plank's that would be classified as negative. Definitely the place to go in German Village if you're tired of dealing with its uppity locals. read more

Lived in Cbus for 14 years now and have searched and sampled the local za during that time. For years I swore on Gahanna/Beckey Pizza Plus as being the best but everytime I hit up Planks on High I change my mind. Great sauce, great tasting thin crust (yes it has taste), tons of toppings. This is the best tasting pizza I've had here. There is another Planks on Parsons but just know, their sauce is very sweet and is completely different from High st. This is a true pizza with excellent flavor, no sugar, just crust, sauce and lots of toppings. If you are on the fence on a good pizza look no further. read more

Long story short - I had a tray of drinks spilled on me and my bill was incorrect and we got the wrong food, and the food was cold and the beer was warm. The details: My friend and I arrived at 6pm for happy hour. We were one of just a few tables there at the time. We got our drinks in a reasonable amount of time, but our server, Karen, took over 20 minutes (after dropping off our drinks) to come back to get our appetizer order. The beers were warm, but I'm not one to complain about something minor like that. The food took 30 minutes to arrive, and when it did, she dropped it off and literally ran off...and she had dropped off a wrong item. The other item that we did in fact order was cold. When we finally got her attention, she did put in the correct order for us, which arrived a while later (also cold). At this point we were out of drinks and wanted to order another. It was a bit busier, but there were still empty tables in the restaurant. This is when our server was walking to another table and spilled an entire tray of drinks down my back and all over my purse. Like, I'm talking probably 8 beers. I was soaked. My purse was full of beer. Nobody offered me a towel to clean off with. Karen just picked up the glasses from the ground and ran off. I used the few napkins on the table to try to sop up the beer. Someone else came along a few minutes earlier to wipe down the table, but she didn't say anything to me or my friend. We finally got our second round of drinks, which again, were warm. When the check came, it was incorrect. I tried for about 10 minutes to get our server's attention to get this corrected, but she was MIA. I finally gave up and just paid the incorrect price. I'd like for a manager to message me on here. I couldn't believe the horrible service, and my purse still smells like beer. And I thought it was pretty crappy that after I had an entire tray of drinks poured down my back, there was no effort to say sorry...couldn't you have given me my appetizer for free? Especially since it came out wrong the first time and was cold...sigh. read more

We visited Planks for pizza, recently, and decided to try something new. We ordered the barbecue pizza. Now, I am not big on barbecue, so I was skeptical. When it came it was an attractive cheese pizza with diced onions imbedded in the cheese, some meat under the cheese and a barbecue flavor that must have been in the pizza sauce. Honesty, I am delighted to say that it was the BEST PIZZA I have ever tasted. The crust was just crisp enough to lift the cut pieces without them wimping over one's hand or getting soggy. read more

My family and I went to planks last night after attending an event downtown. We normally go to Planks on Parsons (which is 100 times better than this place) but decided to stop here instead. It took 10 mins for someone to wait on us and as other people said, they put in our food order wrong and instead of a cheese pizza had made us pepperoni. I'm pregnant and can't eat nitrates so I asked for the right pizza to be made. 45 mins later the pizza came and we asked to take it to go. The waitress joked that she had been in the back eating our wrong pizza and just acted like an idiot about the whole situation. What made it even WORSE, is that my dad went to talk to the "mananger" and he was rude and ignorant too and almost wouldn't discount our food. I will NEVER go back here again. Just drive a little further and go to the other Planks on Parsons, the service is better and so is the food. read more
