Let's talk about how bad this place is... 1. Food quality. Unless it's made fresh to order do not order it. I got a salad and the lettuce was old and about to turn. The chicken was way undercooked and the brussels salad they market is not that. It's a completely different salad mix and they made up some excuse about how it's prepared. 2. Oh my god the service. I felt like I was inconveniencing the bartender by asking for things and he never came to ask how anything was or if we needed anything. Like... if you're in a bad mood, leave it at home. I couldn't get over the fact that the inside of Plank's smells like a urinal cake - totally unappetizing. I went to Plank's for a family reunion of sorts. It was nice of them to let us rent out their large, front room. It is wood paneled with two tiers of seating at both benches and tables. The walls are lined with sports paraphernalia, including an entire back wall filled with college flags. I think our waitresses were uber nervous about having to serve 100 people at once. When we arrived (a little earlier than the rest of our clan) they were frantic about getting our drink orders, asking us what we wanted while we were standing, mingling, and saying hello - even repeatedly asking us what we wanted though we had told them we were going to wait to get drinks until we were seated. Eventually, they pressured us into ordering our beers - before we found our seats. From that point, they did a decent job of getting orders. All 100 of us got pizza to make things easier. My beer was warm by the time we got our pies. I had high hopes about the pizza because I heard it was delicious. But my pizza wasn't very memorable. I think it was just cheese. I didn't eat much because I kept thinking about tiny pink cakes covered in piddle. When I did make my way back to the bathroom, I was surprised to find that it was the least bathroom-y smelling part of the whole restaurant. Weird. Maybe there's a vent that runs straight from the men's room into the dining area? I don't know how to explain it. read more

A bus driver recommended this place. I'm not sure if he was recommending this or the one on Parson's but this one was great. I don't drink so I can't comment on the beer. Disappointing service and mediocre food. The bartender was very evasive and acted like he couldn't be bothered to take care of us. I had to ask the couple next to me to borrow a napkin for my dripping glass of beer. He sat around and talked to his buddies at the other side of the bar and let our food get cold before it was brought out. The lettuce was some pre-bagged iceberg mix that was wilty and not fresh. Depressing place to be honest, holiday time so apparently half the town is gone and lots of places closed (we are from out of town). Had appetizers in the bar, which has the potential to have a lot of character but the bar top looks like a countertop from Lowes (not disparaging Lowes btw). Went to celebrate National pizza day. First time dinning here. Service was quick and friendly. Had the sour kraut balls, they were delicious. I use to come here weekly, I stopped going here because I was frustrated with their service and consistency, and I have started going back this fall and have been quite pleased they are back on their game. Planks have been around for a long time and with good reason. Their location is easily accesible right off high street. Their patio and dining room are generally pretty clean, they pay attention to their bathrooms, and they do a good job of bussing their tables. I think management has done a lot better job in selecting and training bartenders, servers, and cooks. The last three trips in I have had no issues with service; they were attentive, friendly, and always there when needed. I have only had beer here, nothing shot or mixed, and it has always been cold and they know how to give a good head. They have a nice selection, but I tend to go with old reliables when I am eating and drinking. I think they have a pretty diverse menu with several unique items. When you come here with friends and family there are a lot of choices to share and there is something for everyone. Great selection of toppings, apps to get started, and sides to eat with your meal. Tried the bacon wrapped steak and onion rings for an app and buddy got pot stickers. Really liked them all but the steak could have been a little less done. Had a bratwurst with onions on it and applesauce for my entree and loved it, buddy enjoyed his messy, but tasty dagwood. I do like their burgers, pot roast, and their french dip sub. If you have never been or haven't been in for awhile I recommend going to or stopping back at Planks. While I gave them a three, it is a strong three and I will bump them up if they continue to do a good job the next time I come in. read more

It's called "Plank's Bier Garten" because it's in German Village (not "German town", like the guy below said). It's not a particularly German place, it's a local watering hole with a few German selections on the menu. I've been a fan of this place for years. It's comfortable and casual, and the pizza is great. It has giant pepperonis and tons of cheese. The patio is a great place in warm weather, and the indoor patio (think industrial-type solarium) is actually warm and pleasant in the winter. You can have parties in this room, which my family has done several times, and the service is always great. Don't come in with expectations of fancy beers or foodie dishes. It's a local divey bar with loyal clientele. They get a big softball crowd in the summer. I give this place two thumbs up. read more

So let's clarify really quickly that it is in fact a bier garten. They have 10 beers on draft, many more bottles, and full bar otherwise. They serve house-made pizza in their large outdoor space. Come on, people! As far as family-run businesses go, I love going into Plank's. I always feel like a friend here, drink great beer, and always get great service - even with a patio full of softball teams (Let's give credit where it's due - those servers know how to work it when the restaurant and patio fill up with teams! I'd cave under that pressure!) Yeah, it's a little run-down, but that's what gives it character. If you don't like a dive, then why bother? Go to Plank's for some great pizza, great beer, and even better conversation. There is always a character at that bar! read more

Super disappointed in the service here. The food was good, and the atmosphere was excellent on a perfect 72 degree night. The service was awful. The waitress forgot to put in our order for pizza, and she didn't realize it until the rest of our group already had their food. She promised we'd get a discount, but that never materialized. It also took about 30 minutes to get our checks after we'd asked for them. This place has a lot of potential, and you may have better luck on a different night. But I won't be going back here without some assurances from management that things will be better. read more

Ugh, Plank's. I must have missed the memo, but apparently if you work at the Statehouse you have to love this place. For so many of my co-workers, this is the place to be. I no longer work at the Statehouse, so now I hear nothing about Plank's. But when I did, I heard about it all the time. I'm still confused to this day why people love that place so much. To me, there's nothing at all special about it. Maybe it was the gossip that went on here, though, because when I'd come to work the whole Statehouse was abuzz about what happened at Plank's the night before. Everyone, from interns to politicians went here, and when they mix outside of the office, drama undoubtedly happened. But I never got into that whole scene. When I was done with work for the day, I was done, I didn't want all that crap taking up my personal life as well. But for all these people who their jobs are their lives, and that's most of the people who work at the Statehouse, this is their place to unwind after work and create the next day's water cooler conversation topics. Anyway, the only times I have been to Plank's, were, naturally, for work parties. I usually avoided these, but I did attend a few here and there. For the ones that I went to, someone would rent out the entire "banquet?" room area. The big room with tables. Whatever it's called there. Then they'd bring out pizza and we'd have a keg or two of beer. Alright. Free beer and pizza, can't go wrong there. Or can you? I hated parking here. Very rarely was I able to get a spot in the back in their parking lot. The last time I was there I found a spot in front on High St. I guess it wasn't so bad, but I usually have to drive around a bit before I find anything. The entrance is weird. You go around to the back, then go through this door. Right there is the door to the bathroom (so to get to the restrooms you're almost walking out the front door) and then you walk into the main area with the bar and some seating. You walk around the bar in a "U" shape, and go through this other door and down a step or two into the area where our little parties always were. This place smells downright funky. Musty, like old wet shoes or something. Very unappetizing. Outside and in it looks like a cute little German drinking hole. It's not much to look at, and I've never seen it busy besides our big private parties. People always rave about the pizza here. I don't see it. Maybe I think it tastes weird because of the odd stench invading my nostrils, but I also think the pizza is really lifeless. Bland and boring. The crust is thin and chewy, cardboard-y. The sauce is kind of sweet, but not all that zesty. The good news is that there is a lot of cheese on the pizzas, but it's mostly burnt. And this is some really, really greasy pizza. Like you have grease running down your hand when you pick it up. Make sure you have plenty of napkins. We'd have other pizza options, like pepperoni and mushroom. Those were good, but again, nothing really great about them. The pizza is good drunk food for those who are hungry and just don't care. There is a pretty decent back patio, but I've never sat out here because it's a dead zone every single time I've been here. The room is nice enough if you can get past the smell. There are plenty of tables and chairs and TVs line the walls. It's not all that bad, but I would never choose to go here if there weren't free beer. The kegs at our parties were self-serve, so no bartenders helping us out, which was fine. So I can't really speak to the service. But at least the bathrooms have been clean and stocked up. It's definitely not the worst place, but I don't see what's special, either. I do know that once the beer runs out I'm outta there because there aren't any drink specials going on and it could easily get expensive. Plus, it was always a good guideline to give yourself to prevent getting drunk and sloppy in front of the people you work with on a daily basis. I visited here for the first time last week. It just happened to be the closest bar. The outside area was nice, but for a Bier Garten, I expected more beers on tap. This is a solid bar with great, straightforward pizza. Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors, TVs everywhere (great spot to watch a Buckeye game), and plenty of bar food options. The pizza is what makes this a 4 star, in my opinion. It's a classic central Ohio pizza - thin crust, not too heavy on the sauce, best when crispy/well done, and liberal ingredients (pepperoni and green olives is still my favorite combo, though bacon and banana peppers is not too shabby). Oh, and 2 other notes: 1) this is not the Planks on Parsons and the pizza is not crazy sweet (IMO: weird), and 2) parking is usually pretty easy on S. High St., which is a plus. read more

This place is a bit deceiving. By the looks of it, and considering the neighborhood, you'd really think you'd be in for some quality German food. Now, I realize that nobody in German Village (as far as I've found) is doing truly authentic German, but at least places like Schmidt's put out a really well-done and tasty Americanized version of it. We came for lunch, so we didn't drink, but we did sit near the bar. In the winter time, it's really cold and drafty, even though the heat was obviously cranked. Plank's food is kind of sad. My wife got the wet beef. A flavorless pile of roast beef served like an open faced sandwich topped with unseasoned gravy. I went with the brats: Johnsonville served with jarred flavorless lukewarm kraut served on straight-out-of-the-bag slightly-stale cheap hot dog buns with a side of soupy and overly-sugary "German" potato salad. This is my favorite summer time hangout for beer and baseball. The patio is great if you are with a big group since it doesn't really fill up and they have large benches. The inside of the restaurant features large screen TVs and large tables that you can push together so it also works for groups of six or less. Dreaming of summer I recently hit up planks for lunch and although my half and half was served up quickly my grilled cheese and fries and friend's sandwich took forever! Equally disappointing were the fries the majority were almost completely black. I made a joke about not ordering the spuds blackened and my waitress said 'that's how we make them.' Stick with the pizza, go in summer, and go to drink with friends. Otherwise skip it. read more

Having gone to the Planks on Parsons, and hating it, I was hesitant to try this one. But I've heard over and over again that it's better and different. Went to meet friends for a birthday and had the pizza which was GREAT. MUCH better than the sweet, unappetizing pizza at the other Planks. I was also privy to pretzel sticks which were good. The nachos and the subs looked great but didn't try them. The crowd was a big mix of old, young, families and singles. I will be back and will absolutely order their pizza again. read more

Okay, I kind of agree with the stale beer smell, but it's a BAR, so after a drink or two, I don't even notice it. Came here for the after-party of my sister's reception. It was really hot, so we stayed inside mostly, but I bet the outside would be awesome with good weather. Having lived in Columbus for so long, somehow my first Planks experience happened just this summer. The side room has those cool window / wall things that they open on nice days giving the dining area that awesome open air feel. The pizza is ON-POINT, too. Nothing crazy about any of the toppings and nothing exotic at all. Just the perfect balance of flavors and perfect crust. Thin and crisp but still with enough substance to support a proper pizza. For some odd reason they only offer two sizes for the pizzas, and unless you are dining solo I see no reason to get the little guy. In our party of two guys and two girls we crushed a large and small before ordering another small. Also the first place I tasted Beach Bum beer, but the keg blew and that was the end of it so my 1/3 of a glass was a bit of a tease. read more

The dining room is freezing in the winter, don't think about taking your coat off because i'm pretty sure there is no insulation. The basket of fries we got were burned on the outside and barley cooked on the inside. Both times i've gone the pizza tastes like Chef Boyardee took a heavy hand in the creation of the pizza. It comes served on warped little cardboard plates and has the taste of something i'd expect from the food court at Cedar Point or Six Flags. Plank's has finally reopened after a devastating fire 18 months ago and it's better than ever. I love the exposed brick and all of the family photos inside. The open air dining with twinkly lights is perfect for the summer months. The beer was cold and food was hot! We had the pretzel bites to start which was the perfect blend of bread and salt. The pizza was delicious. We ordered a classic pepperoni and I honestly don't remember the pizza tasting as good as it did. Our server was attentive and timely. read more
