GAME CHANGER! When I visit San Antonio Plantaqueria is an absolute must. I'm taken aback every time I walk into to this wonderfully positioned taqueria in downtown steps from the River Walk. The smells, the feels, the sounds- it'll set your senses on fire. It's ambience is nothing short of walking the streets of Mexico and stumbling across the best local food find there is- it's your lucky day. It doesn't end there, because I have yet to discuss the flavors that this place dishes out. If you can imagine that other taquerias in town as as good as mamma's cooking, Plantaqueria is grandma's cooking saying, " I taught them everything they know." The counter service, decor and neon lights transport you to a pueblo that you probably have no business being in but were fortunate enough to get lost in. I feel that the people working to advance this visionary concept are in love with what they do because you get that experience with every bite of fresh, homemade goodness, weather you dine in or take/order out. Dude, fresh corn and flour tortillas, C'mon, man!! And speaking of vision, the owner, Sofia, who looks like she would get IDd at a bar has created something truly unique and incredibly delicious. Plantaqueria has revolutionized modern, classical Mexican street cuisine. It's open 7am-7pm so you can literally have this all day and you might wish you did. My husband and I tried a few items here over a couple visits. The Machacado con huevo, here called La Macha with housemade jackfruit machacado scrambled with a vegan egg mix. (It had Just Egg but I think other things added with it. It felt that it was softer and lighter than if it was only Just Egg) and pico de gallo on handmade flour tortilla. We were surprised by how much we enjoyed it. Their two self-serve complementary salsas were also fun and creamy. Concha- Delicious and we liked the top of it. Maybe one of our favorite conchas. Elote hot cake - Came out really hot and was delicious. These are only available on weekends. I was tempted to get more but we had lots more food targets on the schedule. Torta with Asada was pretty good too. But the other items excited me more I think. The person at the front also gave us some samples of other taco fillings to try: the fillings of the La Ranchera: Potatoes and pico de gallo in salsa ranchera and also grilled nopales. My husband who is usually not as crazy as me about nopales liked them here. They have mole on the weekends but it's not housemade from scratch. They use premade mole and add some more things to it so we skipped that one. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I was visiting downtown San Antonio for the first time and, after seeing the Alamo and walking around the mall near the River Walk, I wanted to avoid the typical chain restaurants and find something with more of a hidden gem, hole-in-the-wall feel. Plantequeria was exactly that. From the outside, it's pretty unassuming, but the food completely exceeded expectations. The plant-based meat was shockingly good -- honestly, if I hadn't known it was plant-based, I never would've guessed. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and very reasonably priced for the quality. What really made the experience stand out was the hospitality and passion from the chef and staff. You can tell they genuinely care about the food and the experience they create. Great spot for vegan Mexican in San Antonio. Big tasty tortas. Lots of protein choices. The horchata iced coffee is my new favorite coffee drink. It's a small place with limited seating with a view of downtown San Antonio. Staff was quite friendly. My daughter ordered a La Amiga taco without pico and one of the guys came by and asked if we'd like cheese or something instead as the taco would be pretty plain without it. Really appreciate that. Found this place highly rated on both Yelp and GrubHub so I thought I'd give it a shot for delivery for lunch. I had the torta and the street corn. Both were underwhelming, to say the least. Let's start with the corn. The cilantro on top looked dark, old, and wilted. There was a sprinkling of flavors and some cheese on top. Aside from that, it was nothing more than canned corn with adornment. Eight dollars for a serving it's sibling not worth it. The torta was a little bit better. The beef was soft and flavorful, but there was a very little other than that. I opted for the nopalitos. The bread was tasty, but not very well toasted. This place is such a vibe with all the bright colors and open space. The employees greet you right away and helped us answer questions about the menu. It's %100 vegan! I was nervous to try it but it did not disappoint. My friend had the La Lucha which he chorizo , seasoned potatoes , scrambled eggs and vegan cheese. She also had the Barbara which is jackfruit barbacoa. I was able to taste both and they were well seasoned and the taco its self was huge! She said she really liked them. I tried the quesadilla with asada on a corn tortila. This was so good I couldn't tell it was plant based. The cheese was so creamy and stringy with the perfect pull. They also put the cilantro and onion inside the quesadilla which makes a big difference. Every bite was full of flavor. We also got guacamole with chips and a brewchata which is horchata mixed with cold brew. The chips were fresh and crunchy. The gauc was so good paired with their house salsa. REALLY wanted to love this place but I think the food could've been a lot better unfortunately. The first thing I tried was the birria quesatacos, and while I've never had regular consommé, so I can't tell if the one here is accurate to the non-vegan version, the one here was kind of salty and slightly bitter which I didn't really enjoy. I also got the mini tacos with carne asada and pollo asado and I thought the tacos were kinda dry. The protein itself was pretty dry too but it did have a meaty texture. I also got their pineapple agua fresca and the pineapple flavor was light and the drink itself was watery. I drive by this place all the time but of course the first time I stop in is with out of town friends. It was worth the wait! The tacos are large enough to be a whole meal. This is a charming small business that can satisfy the strongest of cravings for authentic Mexican vegan vittles. The staff were a super welcoming and high energy. There was a long wait between ordering and eating, but we were warned prior to ordering and decided it was worth it. The food was incredible. I got to sample two different tacos and the st'k and chick'n mini tacos. Everything was fantastic. The only downside of the visit was the thick haze from the grill, which is in the same space as the dining room. The restaurant would benefit from an Improved ventilation system. I stopped into Plantaqueria while staying nearby for business. I enjoy trying vegan spots throughout my travels and seek them out. Upon entering the restaurant it was filled with something burnt. Like pretty perverse. Minus a star as it meant dining in would be unpleasant. Anyways, the employee was friendly and the menu was easy to navigate. I got the Birria, a side of charro beans and chips and guacamole. All to go. It took about 5 minutes to be prepared. During the wait I got some green and red salsa, which spoiler alert they both were quite unremarkable. I enjoy hot sauces and salsas but these were meh. No real flavor. The birria was quite good with fake meat and vegan cheese. It came with dipping sauce which I didn't find it elevated the dish. However I would get it again. The guacamole was good. The chips crisp but covered in oil. The charro beans were good. All in all I enjoyed the meal however I had higher hopes. I will try them again but likely order something else. read more

As we were inspired by the history of almo, we decided to have Mexican foods instead of Italian! We googled it and found this vegan restaurant near the river walk! As we walked in, a friendly staff, Micheal, supported our visit there and gave us good explanations for the foods we were choosing. He gave us some samples for the protein items! Plantaqueria has some seriously good vegan tacos! My favorite has to be the breakfast tacos, especially the bean and cheese one. Their Valentine's Day special is also a winner -- the taquitos served in a heart-shaped box are both adorable and delicious. Honestly, I'd happily get one just for myself! I had the pleasure of finally dining at this restaurant and it was a good experience. There are ~10 tables inside this restaurant and you are welcomed with bright yellow walls contrasting with pink air ducts and plates. I ordered the mini tacos (4) with carne asada and a topo chico ($17.32). It did not take long for the food to come out and it tasted very similar to the 'real stuff'. They have a slew of breakfast tacos, plates, and other sides, along with aguas frescas. I believe this is a great place for anyone looking for a vegan restaurant, albeit it's on the pricey side. This is a place that's a woman owned business. It's vegan. And it's really good. It's a small shop close to the Alamo, and has a distinctively taco shop vibe. This summer in 107' degree downtown San Antonio we were dying of thirst. Directly across from our destination was this eatery, an oasis in the desert! We were going to just get drinks but I had a yearning for a taco. Well the Aqua Fresca was also calling our name, so I went for the mango and it was refreshing and delicious!
