Kamuela Liquor Store has been in business for over 80 years, the signage on the glass window has 78 years but I confirmed with the kind lady staff that helped me twice this past Saturday, is family owned liquor store located in Kamuela on Hawaii Belt Road, parking is next to the store which is a great thing and offers an impressive selection of wines, spirts, sake, and craft beers, they have a unique offering of cheeses, meats, olives, snacks, some groceries and dips. Staff was very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable with my questions on wines and recommendations. They also have weekly wine/sake tasting on weekends. I usually stop here to grab my alcohol for the hotel stay and I saw some great deals, close out deals. I purchased 4 bottles and went back to grab a few more bottles, before we drove back to Hilo, during my most recent visit. Luckily the 6 bottles made it back to Oahu safely. It was such a great deal, a close out deal at $6.99, the only regret is not purchasing the last 6 bottles that were left. It was an Oregon wine which I always wanted to try when I was @ Portland but didn't have the chance to. ( Happy Dance) Check out Kamuela Liquor Store, such a GEM, hole in the wall, at Kamuela and worth the one hour drive too!

The woman there was so unfriendly, didn't even say hello, so we ended up leaving. Given the wine selection and most likely this being a small owner shop, one would have thought the customer service would be much better...

This was not only the worst retail experience in all my years living in Hawai'i, it was the worst…read moreshopping experience ever. I don't say that lightly, nor am I exaggerating. When I came into the shop, the owner was helping the only other customer there. I walked around and found some bottles of what I was looking for in the back, where a woman was wrapping baskets. She made no eye contact with me, and didn't offer a greeting. I remained in the back for over five minutes, repeatedly looking at her and trying to get her attention, but she refused to engage. I returned to the front, where the owner had finished cashing out that one customer and was chatting with him. He made no acknowledgement of my existence for at least another five minutes. The other customer then left and the owner finally asked what he could do for me. I said that I just wanted some help. He told me that it was a very busy time of year (note: at this point I was the only customer in the shop, previously there were two, including myself), and that I need to have patience. This felt like a highly passive aggressive thing to say. But I desperately wanted a certain liqueur for my husband, so I ignored the comment and checked out the bottles. He left me in the back to help another customer. By the time I returned to the cash register with my bottle of choice, he had just started to cash her out. A "she's been waiting, would it be okay if I assist her" might have been nice and what I would have done but I let that slide too. The customer left and he started cashing me out. Being one who's both honest and upfront, I told him that I understand both being busy and patient, I'm an elementary school teacher with Hawai'i DOE; the customer service was deeply lacking, and that I had thought the woman in the back didn't even work there, but rather was a volunteer. He repeated his line about it being a busy time of year (at this point I think there were three customers, including myself, but not including the distributor near the register). I said something to the effect of, "too busy wrapping baskets to even greet a customer," and reminded him of my very busy job. The owner then asked me to leave. As I was walking out I heard him tell the distributor that this had never happened before, but if you look through previous reviews, there are complaints about this woman. Ultimately the owner did me a huge favor. The bottle I was going to buy retails for $45-$52, he was selling it for $79. Another bottle that he was listing for $87, a competitor had for $64. Extremely greedy in addition to rude? All of DOE will hear about this experience!

Their standards are good and they also have a barrel program which has some room for improvement, but is coming along. Where else can you find a barleywine in Hawaii. They also make their own ginger beer and their Dark and Stormy was delicious. My favorite beers were the barleywine and the tripel. I tasted 8 total. The tasting room is well appointed. I appreciate a comfy bar stool. The bathroom was nice and clean. They also have food trucks or food daily. This day they had Uncle Bob's smoked ribs, with truffle mac and cheese, and a cornbread muffin. Probably the best ribs I have ever had. They were seasoned so well I didn't even need sauce. Next time you are in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in. They also have a crowler machine for to go.

The table spacing and soundproofing on the walls allowed for a pleasant environment and the beer was great. We tried almost all of them via 2 flights and were very pleased. The poke and pretzels were stupid good and there's a wing guy out back that brings your order in when it's ready. Very clean and functional given the limited size but they had a lounge open upstairs for overflow. The staff was so lovely and very warm, making a little time for each table so it felt more like a social occasion rather than a transactional one. Definitely looking forward to going back!

The shop sells mostly liquor, but upon entering and making a left turn, you will encounter the poke station. I grabbed a 1/4 pound of the spicy ahi and then bought a bag of the Maui onion chips to go along with it. The poke is $26 per pound and you can get it in 1/4,1/2, pound serving sizes, which is quite nice. They also had bowls that you could get that came with rice, but I really wanted to try the poke with the onion chips. The fish is really fresh here and I was super happy to find The person working at the counter was very nice and patient as we were deciding what we wanted to get. I highly recommend stopping by here for poke. While you're at it, you can also go grab some Maui pie after eating here.

This review is for the poke experience and service we had back in April 2026…read more I have been super excited to try Tamura's again since I haven't been back in 5 years and had a great experience with their poke last time. I especially remember their sunset poke and how good it was, so I knew I had to try it again when I came back. My husband and I arrive a little past noon and waited a little behind a group of young adults. It took a while since it was only 1 person assisting 4 people, until another man arrived to help us. I ordered the sunset poke, and my husband got the shoyu yellowtail. After receiving our fish, we lined up behind the group earlier to pay. As they were leaving, I noticed they were given sets of forks and chopsticks from the cashier. When it was our turn to pay, the cashier didn't say anything, and we had to ask for a fork to eat the poke (which we didn't mind asking). But she gave us attitude, turned around to grab the utensil and handed it to us without saying a word. We waited a little since we wanted to make sure the payment was completed, but she just stared at us and finally said "you're good" when we stood there awkwardly. When we got to the car, we realized the forks she gave were broken and missing some tines. My sunset poke was a little underwhelming for mine. Maybe it was the scoop I got, but the fish had so much tough muscle fibers that I actually had to spit some out since it was so hard to bite through. The sauce was so good though, so it was a bit disappointing from the past memory I had with how buttery the fish was. My husband's shoyu yellowtail was delicious though. It melted in the mouth and really emphasized the sweetness and freshness of the fish. I actually ate it with the sunset sauce, and it paired so well with it too. Overall, the poke is still good and maybe I got a bad scoop, but Tamura's was a lot better in my memories. I would still come back next time I visit but hope for a better experience, since they do have delicious sauce and fish.
