Such a fun spot when you're looking for a special night out. I emphasize special because their attention to detail and focus on quality ingredients comes at a price, but it is totally worth it in my mind! I have yet to have a bad drink here, and the food is delicious. Last night my friend and I decided to share a cheese plate, but the shining star was dessert, which was a peach galette, and we didn't leave a crumb. It was AMAZING. I would post a picture but we ate it too fast ;) For drinks, I selected from the "new classics" menu last night, and found a perfect cocktail that incorporated my summer crush - mezcal. Round 2 I had them make me a mezcal margarita, also lovely. Aside from food and drinks, I have never had bad service here, every person has been friendly and well informed about the menu. This is such a cool spot! We stopped in on Saturday afternoon on our self curated STL Food tour and saw that this place had a great reputation for hand crafted cocktails. I had the imagination library and it was so good. I was really happy with my choice. My husband had a glass of some type of specialty four roses whiskey. He's a big whiskey guy and I have no idea what or why it was special, but he liked it so much that he bought a bottle to take home! We shared the crab cakes and I wish I could say that I loved them.. but I just didn't. The pickled onions on top gave it a weird overwhelming sourness that I couldn't really get past. I normally love the addition of pickled onions, but maybe they just aren't my favorite on crab cakes. I am very impressed with planters house! I was worried about getting a table on a Friday night due to the reservations being filled up, but we got there around 6:15 and there were plenty of spots still and we sat on the patio. It started to fill in around 7ish. Our waitress Rachel was so nice and had great suggestions. The burger was INSANE. The most flavorful burger I've ever eaten 1000/10. The chorizo spread, spicy relish, and manchego cheese added such an awesome and unique combination of flavors. It's a must try!! The crab cakes were delicious and the dill fries were as well. OMG.......I'm soo happy I finally tried Planter's House!!! We went on Sunday, which offers an all day Happy Hour. This cute, little, classic, craft cocktail bar and restaurant on the corner of Chouteau and Mississippi, literally is the bee's knees. The staff is incredibly nice and the bartender's are killing the cocktail game. We walked in and I was immediately greeted by Ted Kilgore himself whom seated us. I asked him if he was mixing cocktails for the day, he replied no, he's working the front of the house, so I picked his brain for various cocktail options for myself. In which he kindly obliged. Our server was Joe whom was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. We began with various delicious cocktails and then dived into outstanding appetizers and ended with belly filling entres. The Planter's House Fries were absolutely AMAZING, served piping hot with house ketchup and aioli. The app special, shrimp toast, served on polenta was a party in my mouth, well seasoned and executed. The shrimp was tender and plump, the sauces complimented the polenta and shrimp. The Braised Beef with the Sancho chili demi-glace, pink radish, chimichurri, crispy potatoes, spinach and chili oil was like grandma's pot roast. I was torn between the burger and pot roast and our server suggested I go w/ the brisket, phenomenal choice. The Trout served on a bed of cauliflower and green chili potato hash with a romesco sauce was tender, well seasoned and delicious. I love a poorly lit cocktail bar; the ambience and clientele make this a great place for a secluded evening or just to escape the hustle of the outside world. I wanted to keep it simple so I ordered an old fashioned. Don't be mistaken, you CAN mess up an old fashioned. I once had to endure this awkward muddled fruit enigma that tasted like Frankenstein's monster in a glass...but I digress. This was perfectly balanced, with enough sweet to balance out the bitter and the whiskey kick on the back. You can judge a bar by its old fashioned and I imagine that the rest of the menu is equally well done. I also decided on the Planter's fries with dill seasoning per the bartenders recommendation. I don't normally enjoy pickle flavored anything but this was actually surprisingly good...emphasis on surprisingly. I enjoyed just sitting and watching the people come through. The drinks here are excellent. We spent the evening on the patio. It is big and spacious and well lit. Others have complained about Mosquitos being on the patio and they were fierce last night. We saw an attempt to control them such as citronella candles. We asked for a candle near our table and bug spray and they provided both. It didn't help much. What they need are fans, on the floor but that probably would look ridiculous and be impractical. The inside is gorgeous and cozy. Beautiful red leather banquettes and dim lighting. Go up and check out the Bullock Room. It has a full bar and is also beautifully decorated. Back to the drinks...the server asked us what type of drinks we were looking for. The menu is extensive. She asked, I told her and she brought me the most delicious drink, The Gin Soaked Boy. Citrusy, boozy, tart and very bright favors. My dining companion had The Penicillin. Also a very interesting drink with a smoky finish. They have a nice variety of food. We had popcorn (there are different varieties), mussels, arugula salad and a Margherita pizza. I'm not a HUGE craft cocktail person. I prefer Ketel and soda, wine, or beer. But this place has quite the extensive list! So if you're into that scene, definitely give this place a shot! We came for happy hour with some friends. Took over the outdoor covered patio. It was a wonderful day! The service was excellent even though the server had to try and get orders from 20 people. I ordered the galette and fries and my friend ordered the lamb mac 'n cheese. The galette was amazing! I love the crusty, fluffy type of pastry dough made into a dish. It was perfectly baked and toasted. The filling of the galette was splendid. A sweet pineapple onion combination married very well with the BBQ pork sitting on top. I would go back just for this dish! The fries were on point, crispy and seasoned well. The lamb mac 'n cheese was a bit of a downer for me. Not enough lamb to justify the price of the dish. I'm glad they're open right now despite COVID. Their website has been great with updates during temp closures. The outside patio is lovely (watch your step. It's authentically historic which means you might trip over something--especially after a couple drinks). They're open inside too. It feels like a ghost town inside though--Very sterile. They're firm on safety procedures too. It should give any concerned person peace of mind. The drinks here are great! Such a diverse lineup of creative cocktails plus classics. A couple of my favorite servers can help you hone in on any cocktail if you suggest a spirit and your preferences. I've never been led astray. Jake is particularly great. Food items are good. Pricy and small portions but delicious. (Truffle fries. Mmmm) The only negative is that some of the staff don't seem to have the friendly vibes down. They're not rude just curt. For the total experience (and the price) you want servers/bartenders/hosts who will shine a little charisma your way. This is only the case about half the time. Wow. We initially heard about their expansive cocktail list, but we were (also) highly impressed with the food! When we arrived we were seated right away in the upstairs area. Loved the lounge-style decor and overall candle-lit ambiance. Really sets a romantic mood. Our waitress, who was also our bartender, couldn't have been more attentive and nice. For starters, we tried the Planter House Punch. It was the perfect mixture of sweet punch and alcohol. Then, our food came. We ordered the Steak and Frites and Burger with fries. O-M-G! Let me just say this is no ordinary burger. So juicy and the manchego cheese paired perfectly with the spreadable chorizo and relish. Only downside to the burger and fries was the house-made ketchup--it had a weird, non-ketchup taste. They didn't have regular ketchup so we ate the fries without sauce. This was such a good experience me and my sis were looking for somewhere to have a good drink and we found so much more. First of all our waitress was amazing and we would go back for her alone now the food and drinks are next level. I had the planter house fries because I saw a picture on a previous review that looked delicious and OMG best fries ever I chose the fresh dill seasoning which gave them a great fresh sour bite and they were crunchy on the outside soft on the inside served with a garlic Mayo sauce and some sort of tomato sauce forgive me for eating them so fast I didn't snap a picture. I also had the lamb and arugula salad appetizer it was a ground lamb loaf with feta cheese between the layers and it came with a tzatziki sauce. We had a fantastic experience here. From our service, to the atmosphere, to the drinks, and then finally to the dessert - everything was fantastic. I cannot wait to come back! Every drink was great - they have a bunch of signature cocktails. They were able to give me gluten free toast for the cheese plate, which I would highly recommend - the jelly was awesome. I have NEVER gone to a restaurant that accommodated gluten free for a cheese board - I was beyond impressed and pleased. I also was able to get a gluten free bun with the brisket sandwich, which was FIRE. WOW. There wasn't much on the menu that made me salivate and because I chose to walk from downtown on a particularly hot day, I decided on the kale salad and added the cured salmon for an additional $4 up charge. The tried and true 'new classics' are always on point. And the old classics are done so well you could even call their making a historical reenactment! I came here with a wedding party while working a wedding. The owner was so accommodating, letting the bride and groom enter a bit before they opened at 4pm. He got the main photographer and I waters (since we can't drink on the job), and he even pointed us to the bar upstairs to take the bride and groom for some lovely photos. So I've been here a couple times based on the suggestions of others and Planter's House has yet to disappoint. I have yet to eat here, so this review is solely based on the cocktails I've consumed and my experiences. When first entering Planter's House, it's dim lit and possesses a sophisticated ambience about it. It's also not too noisy and has a modestly open layout so you don't feel cramped whether you're seated in a booth, at a table, or at the bar. The cocktail list is rather expansive and somewhat overwhelming. However, I see this as a good thing because it means I have an abundance of options to choose from. The cocktails I've enjoyed the most are the Old...But Still in Fashion and the Skater Tot (shout out to Max). If you have a chance to sit at the bar, you'll be able to see the creation of your cocktail and it's quite fascinating. The bartenders/mixologist are skilled in their craft and will set you up right. If you're unsure which cocktail to try, feel free to ask for a recommendation based on things you like, and remember that eventually they'll all taste good. I only had drinks and the fries here, not sure I would go back for dinner. After reviewing the menu I had a difficult time trying to find something that I would like to eat. I was here on a first date so the drinks were what I was looking for. The mixologist was part chemist and part genius. I had the most tasty margarita of my life, after the first sip I knew that I would need another. The second one was just as tasty. I think at this place I learned the difference between a bartender and a mixologist. What a difference. The fries were amazing as well, I loved the spiciness of them. We popped in at 6:00 on Saturday to meet two friends for a drink before dinner up the street. It was a "surprise" for one of the two's birthday (the other knew we were coming) and they were sitting at the bar when we arrived. We were there less than a minute before the very surly hostess told us "you can't stand right there at the bar." We apologized and asked her if one of us could sit in the open seat next to them and the other stand, and she flatly replied, "no, that's reserved." Fine, we get it- and there were plenty of open tables around. I asked if we could move to a table for four of us, explaining we were just going to have a drink since we had a dinner reservation in 30 minutes. She asked "How many more of you are going to arrive?" She seemed EXTREMELY put out at having to consult her reservation book or tablet, and marched us over to a four top. Our server was really nice, and took our order right away. A few minutes later two friends came in for their dinner reservation and caught sight of us sitting at the table. They came over to say hi, and the same hostess interrupted and said, "Your table is out back ready for you." They were surprised and one said "Well, she seems to be in a lovely mood." Frankly, we wouldn't go back based on those interactions; she was unsmiling, definitely unfriendly, and downright unwelcoming. If the place was a quarter-full (which it wasn't), or there were a mad rush of people waiting (there weren't), or the service staff was slammed (didn't appear to be, and our server was very nice) then I could understand, but she soured any chance of a future interaction. Let's start this way - I'm from Chicago (relax, it's not a comparison piece), and there are a good number of extremely good cocktail forward bars that are considered world-class. I visit St. Louis often (family and friends), and I can almost always find an establishment somewhere that will serve me a manhattan instead of a beer. But, when I read about Planter's House back in 2014, I knew I had to go. Of course, 7 years later, I finally get the chance to go to Planter's House. Let me tell ya, it did NOT disappoint, not in the least bit. Sure, COVID rules makes everything feel odd, but, they were so accommodating and prepared that I almost forgot we were still in a pandemic (someone mentioned the 2-hour time limit - look buddy, we're in a pandemic, and these guys are doing the best they can with the limited seating, especially indoors. Instead buying that overpriced glass of wine, you should've had a cocktail....too bad for you. Trust me, the 2-hour time limit was perfect for us, and it's not going to last long). I'm going to start my review of PH by saying that I would put them in the top 5 cocktail bar experiences, ever. EVER. Not to brag (but I will), but, I've had the good fortune of having cocktail experiences at some of the best bars in the country. Planter's House is no different. It felt like home, to be honest. (actual real feel? I thought I might've been in the reincarnated Bar Deville, but in St. Louis....if you know you know). Service was impeccable, and friendly. And, sure, you can order from the menu, but, I asked if the bartender would do a "dealer's choice", and was told, "Absolutely!" First dealer's choice drink I asked for something whiskey based, bitter, on the rocks (or rock as it were), and no simple syrup nor sparkling ingredient. And, the bartender did not disappoint -- they made my drink and included Cynar (it was like we were kindred), and had a large, clear ice cube. Perfectly bitter and satisfying. Net dealer's choice, I asked for a green chartreuse based cocktail, the rest up to the bartender just not sweet. This second cocktail was amazing! Chartreuse, cognac, bitters, and just a splash of simple (it wasn't sweet at all, but very balanced) served up. Again, remembering my first drink, the second wasn't so vastly different and blew my mind away. My friends' drinks were all just as delicious - the winner of the afternoon was the Big O Painkller, a frozen drink that we perfect on a 90+ degree day, wiht just the right amount of booziness. We didn't really have much in the way of their food menu, but we did have the Faux-ritos (housemade Dorito style tortilla chips - wow) and the Curried Chex Mix (even bigger wow). We got to meet Ted Charak, who showed us the "upper" room that should be opening soon, and will be next on my places to visit. Ted and Ted have really created a gem of a spot in St. Louis, land of the King of Beers, and I hope they continue to prosper! Can't wait until we meet again Planter's House. read more

I went to this restaurant last night with a large group of friends. We had a reservation. The hostess was rude from the outset and yelled at us to sit down (as we hugged and treated each other), even though we were not blocking anything. She also told us many, many times about their two hour limit, even though it wasn't full. The food was just so so. All of the pickled items really weee not pickled and the appetizers were very small portions. Not the James Beard quality I'm used to. The waiter also appeared bothered by any questions. Honestly, I'm going to agree with the person below. I left this restaurant super confused how everyone raves about it. Our server, tried his best, maybe? My boyfriend and I sat there for twenty minutes waiting for two drinks in which I had counted and there were exactly 12 other guests already served in the restaurant. The cheese plate was empty; a giant plate with sparing amount of cheese. I think the hard fast serving rule is if your guest hasn't touched their meal in over 16 minutes, you should definitely check on them. Well unfortunately, I definitely don't eat pork and although the waiter repeated no chorizo on my hamburger, raw chorizo was definitely on it. To top it off, I took one sip of my drink and sent it back, and my boyfriend took a sip and felt too guilty to say anything and left an essentially full drink before we left. I still had a decent sip left in my glass when the waitress started pushing another round (it's cocktails, not beer, you don't chug them), literally indicated I should slam the last bit so she could remove the glass. Then in response to her 'well, what did we think"? I suggested my drink was a bit unbalanced and would benefit from a splash of simple syrup, she brought me one. Not comp'd, fully charged at $17. I had been thinking of a different cocktail entirely, and when I said I had not decided on a repeat, she said, "I thought we agreed you wanted a second". No, she was making sure the bill got pumped up. 2. Food. Used to be interesting, but now it's so slapped together. The kale salad with mushrooms was a small amount of sauteed kale with a few insipid mushrooms over the top. The $14 cheese plate was literally two one ounce slices of Manchego, an ounce of Brie, some other cheese and about eight crackers, oh, and a spoonful of jam passing as chutney. The 'hot' fries were a waste of time and money. 3. Ambience, - boy is it loud. High ceilings with curved walls made a half-filled bar sound like a college frat party. Great for slamming beer with college kids, not so much for expensive cocktails with adults. 4. Value. $150 bucks for four cocktails and four small plates. Not much value there. 5. Overall. Used to love PH, but had not been in a while. Feels like they are mailing it in now, while a great concept it has slipped noticeably. Disappointing when there are so many newer places really executing well on the premise of adult drinks in a stylish setting with good food and atmosphere. (for instance, Small Batch). read more

Planter's House is a really neat spot off of Choteau Avenue. The menu is super eclectic and inventive. Ted Kilgore really knows what he's doing with his spirits. I got the Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, which has tequila, blood orange purée, spiced hibiscus liquor, and lime. It was really good - could definitely taste the spice in it. Same weird experience...bartenders have zero customer service and it's the same bartenders for years..crack a smile? show some character? Show signs if life? Come on Bueller! The food I am not sure what to say between the small cheese plate with tiny slices of 3 cheeses for way to much $ or the over seasoned fries with aioli that the combo is way over salty. Don't get me started with the burger and the salad. Great selection but everyone minus the sazerac had muted flavors. It's really weird. Overall great decor, poor menu execution, work on the cocktail flavors, get some customer service and figure out your pricing you are way way way over priced. What a hidden gem. I would never have noticed this place if I didn't go looking for it, since it has a dark exterior and is in kind of in a weird location (on the corner of Chouteau and Mississippi, which is mostly residential without many other businesses immediately nearby), but that gives it almost a speakeasy vibe, which I dig. The inside is deliciously swanky with the dim lighting and victorian pattern wallpaper. My friend from NYC was super pleased, saying this was a "chic" bar she would expect to find in the city, not on a random street corner of St. Louis. Kind of a back-handed compliment, but in defense of St. Louis, I have to point out that a place like this in NYC would definitely leave a couple of students bankrupt, yet the drinks ran for only $8-11 a piece here. Not just affordable, but a down-right steal considering that we're talking about beautiful, hand-crafted cocktails. The bar was packed on a Saturday night, but we only had to wait about 10-15 minutes before snagging three spots at the bar upstairs, which was much cozier and more intimate feeling. The service was a smidgeon on the slow side, but that's to be expected, considering the labor that goes into making each drink. All of the cocktails we had were unique and delicious, ranging from light and refreshing ("Working Title") to downright boozy ("Whisky punch"). The drinks were STRONG (thank you!) and the presentation was so beautiful (whiskey in a teacup? so cute!) that we couldn't help but take photos, which lead to jealous friends demanding to know where I was after seeing them on Instagram. Holy craft cocktail heaven. Now THIS is where you go to get a drink. I'm severely disappointed in myself that I haven't made it here sooner. I'm already looking for my next excuse to go back. Planter's House is rather discreet looking. It's right across from Moulin/PW Pizza/21stAmendement. When you first walk in there is a normal swanky dining room but they also offered up to us a different area called the Bullock Room. It's their "cocktail lounge/bar" area. We were just there for drinks and heard it was cool so we took them up on this offer and I'm glad we did. This is easily one of the coolest spots to grab a cocktail in St. Louis. You literally feel like you're in the 1920s from the decor. No spoilers, go see it for yourself. Now for the drinks... Planter's literally has around 40 different cocktails to choose from. The menu is huge and will take some time to mull over. It's divided up between types of cocktails so you have your bourbon page, your whiskey page, your martini page, annnnnd I don't remember the other one. I wish I was a cocktail expert but I'm more of a noob. I went with the Planter's Punch as recommended my the waitress. It was really good! It was one of the sweeter ones on the menu but still really strong. I tried my company's drinks, too. All of them were amazing and unique (and really strong). They serve their cocktails in old-timey glasses that look like their from your grandma's fine glassware cabinet. It adds to the whole experience. I can't wait to go back and show this place off. I've only ever been here for drinks and apps but they've always been delicious! Last time I went I had a beet / chili / strawberry drink which was delicious! We split the ice cream sandwich- 2 snickerdoodle cookies with Carmel ice cream... yum! The cookies tasted like they were baked 10 minutes prior; they were so soft and the sugar coating was crumbling off! I also had the fries and the waiter boasted they were the best in town... they're skinny fries with a lot of crispy coating and seasoning sprinkled on top.. and yeah they're pretty delicious! French fries, ice cream cookie sandwich, and drinks... a well balanced delicious meal! The ambiance is very cool, I think there's velvet curtains, lots of wood paneling, and you can guarantee you won't run into any drunk college kids here ;) read more
