We went in for a late lunch on Saturday. The place was nearly empty -- only two other tables were occupied, and we were the third. Despite that, the other tables seemed to receive constant attention while our waitress disappeared for long stretches of time. We were initially seated in the side room with a large industrial fan blowing so hard that it was moving the menus off the table. We waited for the waitress to return so we could request a different table, but she never came back, so we moved ourselves to another empty table away from the fan. She seemed unhappy about the move and told us we might have to relocate again because they were expecting a busy day. Honestly, the restaurant was empty, and we would have been finished long before any rush started -- which we were. I asked for ketchup with my burger, and it didn't arrive until after I had already finished eating. Overall, the service was very poor. Unfortunately, the food was also extremely salty -- and we're people who normally enjoy salt. I had the Farmhouse Burger with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese, while my wife ordered the steak and fries cooked medium well. The steak came out medium rare, and both her fries and my burger and Brussels sprouts were overly salted. The one bright spot was the mac and cheese, which we took to go. My daughter tried some and said it was the best she'd ever had. To top it off, our bill came to an even $100 with tip, and all we had were waters and the items mentioned above. I love the eccentric vibe of this place. It's right on the corner on the very edge of CWE. You can almost miss it, but don't! We sat with reservations in the back, and got our table right away. I was told if you're looking for a good craft cocktail bar try this pub and you will not be disappointed, I'm sad to say I was disappointed. Browsing the website I found a couple of drinks that piqued my interest only to find out the menu had not been updated. With that being said it's false advertising in my opinion . Of seven drinks only one was still available which was the Corn Colada cocktail . It was just ok. Moving on i ordered the chicken sandwich meal which consisted of honey chili glaze, Gouda, slaw,housemade pickles on a brioche bun and fries. We made last minute reservations for Friday evening to get out and enjoy the weather. It's a nice and quaint restaurant that stayed very busy. We were seated right away. Our waitress was friendly and service was fast and efficient. Since we were right at the end of happy hour, we ordered the Parmesan garlic fries, Fried brussel sprouts, Pineapple daiquiri, and Old Fashioned. All were wonderful but my absolute favorite was the Fried brussel sprouts. They were super flavorful and seasoned. I loved the sauce they paired with it. I would go back just for those! I also tried the Honey chili chicken wings. They were crisp but still juicy. The ranch paired with it was not good typical ranch. I liked it because it help with the spice of the wings. My husband likes a more traditional ranch. My husband ordered the Farmhouse burger but substituted the fries with the Kale Caesar salad since we already had fries. He said his burger was fantastic. The only issue he had was the difficulty keeping the top bun on. He liked the salad. The dressing was not a traditional caesar dressing but was a nice change of pace. For a second cocktail, I had a hard time choosing between the Three toed Flamingo and the Meadowlark. The waitress said she loved them both. I decided to try the Three toed Flamingo since it was a little different but it was too tart for me. My husband loved it so he drank it and I ordered the Meadowlark which I loved. Had a spicy Mezcal that was amazing. As for the food there's a needed backstory. 24 years ago on our honeymoon we went to Italy and in Florence I had the best pasta I've ever had. Wild boar tagliatelle. So good that 5 years later we flew back in part to have it again. I've tried with decent success to recreate it at home but it's not quite the same. No. Retreat doesn't have wild boar tagliatelle. But they do have a braised short rib tagliatelle that is the closest I've ever had to my original love. I don't think I could pass a blindfolded taste test. So for you locals you can fly 4,928 miles or you can get your posteriors in these seats. Your choice but if you do neither you are missing out. Minor edit. Returned second night in a row. Sat inside at the end of happy hour. Amazing fish tacos. I get the other reviews that the place is loud but it's a popular (crowded) place and I can't see what the owners could do to reduce the noise. Finally! After a long day of gin samples and croquet, my friend decided today was the day for Retreat Gastropub. This place has been on my list for a while, so needless to say I jumped at the chance of going. We went at 4:45 on Sunday and were seated right away. Within a couple minutes, we were greeted by our server and given water. I had an idea of what I wanted food wise, well, I knew I wanted to try the Brussel sprouts but was still undecided on the main dish. All the drinks looked good, but I was sold on the Three Toed Flamingo because they listed it as tropical. I forgot the drink my friend ordered but she said it was great. My drink was strong and wasn't as sweet as I had hoped. IMO, it's def. meant to be sipped slow, or maybe it's because I can't handle bitters? Either way, I took my time. As we were browsing the menu, the couple next to us got the Parm garlic fries, miso glazed salmon, and something else. After seeing their dishes, I knew I wanted the same. My friend got apps (Mac and cheese and sprouts), while I got two mentioned above and sprouts for myself. Both of our sprouts arrived first and they were cooked perfectly. I'm a sucker for a good crispy, charred sprout accompanied by seasoning and I got just that. What I didn't expect was to find the white hummus at the bottom. It was different. The mushiness crept into some of the sprouts and made them soggy. Thankfully, it didn't alter the taste. I had to pump the brakes on my sprouts because I knew I still had more food coming. When it arrived, we each split the fries (which were SO good) and I shared a little of my salmon. The fries were cooked perfectly and had a great crisp to them. I was happy the salmon was cooked slightly more than medium because any other place I've been where it's cooked but still pink has made me sick. They cooked it this way without me asking, so def. get bonus points for that. After eating all we could, we got our food to-go and settled for the check. I always try to order it wet, or medium rare for fear of getting overcooked salmon but I forgot to request it...but the salmon was cooked perfectly, just the way I like it. As always, Retreat exceeds expectations. Just wanted to give an updated review because I went for brunch so we grabbed some items we do not normally eat. First, the honey chili wings. Wow. All I can say is wow. The wings are fried to a heavenly crispiness. But, the honey chili is what takes these wings from great to some of the best in STL. It is so sweet and tangy without being too spicy. I do not know how they do it. You immediately get hit with that vibrant sweetness from the honey, and the flavor slowly transitions to spicy from the chili. I want a million. The B.E.L.T was a showstopper. This is not the type of sandwich I normally order, but decided to be a bit different. First and foremost, the grilled sourdough was incredible. I know, I know, such a simple aspect of a sandwich to focus on. But, far too often it gets overlooked. It was crisped without any extra moisture or grease clinging to your fingers. The sandwich itself was incredible. An incredibly light blend of aioli, arugula, tomato, and egg anchored by their signature candied bacon. And, can I please brag on the breakfast potatoes? Seasoned with paprika, salt, and other spice these potatoes figuratively taste like breakfast. And, where else can you get breakfast potatoes where every single potato is crispy and crunchy? I think the absolute highlight of the trip was the bread pudding. It unequivocally, indubitably was one of the greatest desserts I have ever eaten. The bread pudding had such a rich, soft center with sticky edges that gave you a slight crunch. Your spoon cuts straight through the spongy center. The caramel sauce is so rich with that rich sweetness balanced with a bit of saltiness to bring the dish together. Of course, it is served warm, so the scoop of vanilla ice cream that accompanies makes for the perfect pairing. As always: the service was exceptional, the vibes were smooth, and the company was great. As we left, I am certain every single worker bid us farewell.
