Planter's house is a pretty neat place. We came in on a Friday evening, made reservations ahead of time and were seated at a bar tucked around a corner through a set of short stairs. Fine with me but why were we seated at a bar when I made reservations? I didn't ask, there was no one else at said bar. We started our dinner with some plantain chips with aji verde and I wanted to try their sambal pickled egg. My husband and I shared the plantain, he enjoyed it more than I did. I loved the pickled egg though! For our main course, I had the duck and my husband ordered the mushroom pancit. The duck dish was a bit weird to me (like a weird smell) so my husband and I switched dishes. Neither of us is vegan so we were able to quickly rectify the issue. By the way, their pancit is vegan. I wish there was a carnivore version though. I loved the pancit. It was such a flavorful dish and although I couldn't finish it, the dish reheated well the next day. Unfortunately, we skipped dessert as I was way too full. Our server was excellent. She brought over the drinks and food dishes quickly and was very helpful when we had questions or needed a refill. I will definitely be back to try their other offerings. read more

First, I love how low-key this place is unless I am mistaken I don't think there was even a sign on the front door. The interior is warm with a lot of nice wood and brick accents. Secondly, the service was fantastic. I was meeting up with an old friend to catch up and our server did a wonderful job of making sure we had drinks and water but without being even a little obtrusive. Towards the end of the night when we were concerned that ordering another drink might keep them there later than they wanted to she was firm but kind that they were happy to serve us another cocktail before the last call. The drinks, which will be a surprise to no one, were wonderful. I got a sazerac that was so well balanced (this is a drink that seems to be easy to ruin as I suppose many alcohol-forward cocktails are), I would have had another one but I am always a fan of a Hemingway daiquiri. Another great drink (and to my palette a different style of cocktail), and I would recommend either of thm to anyone. Finally, the reason this is 4 stars as opposed to 5 and that was the bar snacks. To be clear, we did not have any main courses - we just shared a handful of appetizers to eat while we were drinking and chatting. None of them were really outstanding (trail mix, olives, cheese plate) and maybe I was just spoiled by the bar snacks at Ward 8 in Evanston but they missed the mark. That said? My friend and I both agreed we'd go back there, he is going to start taking dates there for a cocktail. All and all, I really enjoy this place. read more

Before I get into the "meat" of this review, I just want to say that I recommend Planter's House 100% for their beverage program. If I could rate it just based on that, I would, but we ordered dinner too, and my meal was ok, but my partner's wasn't great. I had the ribeye, and although cooked accordingly and flavorful, there was a lot of fat on it, even for a ribeye. I also wish the romesco sauce was served on the steak, rather than under it. My partner ordered the duck carbonara, and should have sent it back. He ordered it medium rare, which is how the house cooks it, and it arrived gray with pink in the middle and tough. It was hard to cut even with a sharp steak knife, and if it hadn't been for the delicious pasta, mushrooms, and pancetta, would have been hard to stomach. Again, definitely recommend Planter's House for drinks (and appetizers too!), but I would skip the main dish. read more

This review will mostly cover the cocktail section of the menu as that is the focus of my visits. Although, I have gotten the house fries many times and they hit the spot--especially after a couple stiff drinks. Planter's House is, in my opinion, the best bar in STL. Whether you're seated in the main area or intimate Bullock Room, there is a warm, rustic atmosphere with beautiful wood/brick accents all around. If this a date night event, the tables all around are ideal. However, if you're a cocktail enthusiast, I would recommend sitting at the Bar as the bartenders are very knowledgeable and friendly. As for the drinks, the quality goes without saying. The menu is both diverse and rotates seasonally--of course, there are staples that never leave like the Planter's House Barrel Picks-which are my personal favorite (try the PH Black Manhattan)! Little side tip, go for a stroll around Lafeyette Square after dinner or as you wait for a table to see some of the beautiful architecture from the oldest historic district in STL! read more

We stopped in here for a post-dinner, pre-concert drink. They have a large outdoor patio which was great for both social distancing and enjoying the nice weather. I have to say, the cocktail menu here is EXTENSIVE. Our waitress was patient with us as we perused the many options on the menu. The staff was all friendly and our waitress was able to make some good drink suggestions. Our drinks were tasty and definitely on the strong side. Worth a stop! read more

Very happy to try the pop up bar here for the first time! The Christmas decorations are amazing. Tried the Kris Kringle Colada drink which was awesome, not too sweet or tart and comes in a cool cup. But the best drink was easily the "In a pickle", which had such a pleasant floral taste due to the elderflower. A very memorable drink and one I will definitely want to have again! The fries with the hot & sweet Maui onion sauce were so addicting. The meatballs, however, come in a small quantity and were somewhat underwhelming in taste. Not bad if you want something light to eat. I'm usually not a fan of hot alcoholic drinks but their Undertow Toddy tasted so good and had a strong and sweet molasses type of taste to it which was very enjoyable. SIPPIN SANTA REVIEW! First, Covid.. Planters house has figured it out! You do sit inside but the tables are socially distanced. The servers put all your ordered items on a table at the end of your table to reduce the contact. We felt comfortable! Reservations are hard to come by.. but keep looking! I scored a last minute reservation for 4. There is a $5 cover per person that doesn't come off your check.. which sucks but it gets you there. The drinks were good. I hate cinnamon, so finding something appealing was a little difficult. The drink I ordered has cinnamon in it but honestly, it wasn't overwhelming. All the drinks our group ordered were delicious and came in cute cups! Order the Maui Onion fries. You need them. Get extra aioli.. you're welcome. You get the table for 1:45. Planter's House was THE place that I needed to go to, not for me but because my friend wanted to and so we ended up going there twice. The first night we ended up there a little before closing time but were welcomed in. There's a rotating list of cocktails and got the robot theme. I ended up getting the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em twice which came with a little gummy and was a nice whiskey based cocktail. I asked our bartender for a whiskey based cocktail and I got this one, which was good. My St. Louis trip was basically marked by lackluster service, indifferent bartenders who basically were more concerned with sidework, and this could have been the case here as well: close to closing time but I'm glad to say that this was NOT the case here. We got a rundown of the menu, and how the staff gets together to put together the rotating cocktail list and even got to see the Bullock Room even though it wasn't open. Since we were there close to closing time and was there drinking a cola, because I was in need of a caffeine jolt and there was some leftover red wine that wasn't sufficient for a serving so I got to try a Kalimotxo,a drink that's one part red wine and cola. Planter's house proximity to downtown makes it the perfect dinner spot before an event. They make fantastic craft cocktails & even have a few NA options on their menu. I tried the sambal pickled egg, which was the perfect small app to take the edge off my hanger . It was simple, slightly spicy & delicious. I highly recommend their fries & burger-- perfectly elevated bar food. On our most recent visit, we tried the duck pasta and cashew chicken. Since we sat at the bar, near the host, we continued to have unwelcoming interactions w/him throughout our visit, which was embarrassing in front of the visitors we were taking out for the evening. Was told this was a great place for cocktails so decided to stop in for dinner. We were seated pretty quickly when we got there and our server was pretty attentive. We started with the You're the Man now Dog and the Johnny Razors for drinks. Both were very good 5/5 for sure! For food I ordered the cashew chicken and my partner ordered the rack of lamb. The cashew chicken had pretty decent flavor but the serving size was pretty small. Very similar to the chicken, the lamb tasted good but they were very small and portion size seemed a bit small for $30. First off, I gotta say kudos to Planter's House for being part of, "Dine Out For Life 2019". It is so rewarding to see a local business giving back to a local charity. Planter's House was my third stop for Dine Out For Life. It's an important charity to me, so I try to get out and support it through as many of my favorite restaurants as I can. Lucky for me, I was here during HH so a couple of my masterfully made cocktails were $3 off. Yelp was hosting the event here at PH, so I got to start my evening off sharing and toasting the event with Max our fabulous CM. I started off with a Slope and Max enjoyed a Tommy's Margarita (spicy). My Slope, was sort of a Old Fashioned made with Rittenhouse Rye, my favorite Rye. I will definitely add it to my cocktail rotation here. Knowing I had one more stop on my evening out, I only ordered the Strawberry Salad. I figured I'd make my evening like a progressive dinner party. Loved this salad. It was made with my favorite lettuce, Bibb. It addition to the fresh strawberries, it had; shaved fennel, dill ricotta and rye bread croutons. All of this was then tossed with a lemon-poppyseed dressing, another favorite of mine. It all blended well together and the rye croutons were a nice twist. I closed out my evening before moving to my final stop of the night with a Kentucky Breeze. I choose it for two reasons. One, it's made with Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon and it also had strawberry infused Bonal. I thought it was appropriate to stay with the strawberry theme. It was a perfect finale. Wow! I am still thinking about the cocktails I had last night; they were so refreshing and delicious! Thanks to Steven B. for planning a little UYE Happy Hour; a few of us ended up here last night. Two things: 1) I have not written a review in almost a month and PH really deserves to be my first review after a hiatus. 2) I felt like such a lucky lady to be surrounded by Brian M. Steven B. and Max R. at this HH event. When I arrived Steven B. (as the host) was already at the bar sipping on his cocktail. The bartender greeted me and poured me a glass of water while I reviewed the menu. I opted to try The Fitzgerald (Citadelle Gin, Lemon, Sugar, Angostura Bitters) first and it was such a good choice. So refreshing and very much a classy cocktail. A few of their New Classic Cocktails were on a HH special, but I can't remember what that was. I think they took $2 off the regular cost of the drink during HH. I enjoyed conversations with the others and noticed that PH really is such a quaint place and it seems to me that most of the servers/bartenders are familiar with their regular customers. I would like to become a regular here! I finished my drink and started to look through their menu to see what I needed to order next. Since I wasn't sure of a drink, I decided to ask the bartender for her opinion. I asked about the Grapefruit Moon (Earl Grey Liqueur, La Quintinye Blanc Vermouth, Lemon, Grapefruit Bitters, Bubbles) and she did tell me that if I liked grapefruit I would likely enjoy the drink. My best friend made reservations for Planter's House at 9:30pm. We arrived on time and were quickly seated in a cozy booth by the bar. We were there for a short duration after having dinner from down the street, but it was a nice place where we got last rounds of libations before calling it a night. I ordered a gin cocktail called "Honest... I Ran Out of Gas," which was refreshing. It had a tartness to it that made me pucker. I tried another gin drink called "I Swear to God!", and it was a total 180. It was heavier on the bitters and tasted more medicinal to me.
