On 02/14/2026, I brought a bag of items in to sell. When I came back to see which items had been selected, I asked simple questions about what was being taken. The employee with dark hair and a nose piercing was mumbling, and I could barely hear her. When I asked her to repeat herself, she seemed annoyed. She allowed me to look through the bin of items they planned to take, but again I couldn't hear her clearly. She said not to mess up the order, but because she was speaking so quietly and unclearly, I started picking up the items I was agreeing to sell before signing off. She rolled her eyes, was passive-aggressive, and repeated that I shouldn't "mess up the order." I've been to many locations before, but this was the rudest and most unprofessional service I've experienced. read more

Staff is less than personable / friendly. Brought in maybe 5 items for them to look at , took two and a half hours and they offered me $3 for one item that was tagged $110 and brand new. Literally a Nike zip up they could've/ would have sold for $40-60 no doubt. The girl told me they didn't take SHEIN at any store; when half of their collection as well as the Portsmouth locations collection is all SHEIN items. The difference in prices is also INSANE. I got brand name boots in Portsmouth that retailed for $200 for $14. This Plato's is selling nasty gross dirty shoes for $60 with Amazon branding. I genuinely wouldn't waste your time or money coming to this location at all. They really pick and choose here and the staff is just not worth dealing with. The staff didn't even look at the bag of women's items. It was in the exact same order. They told me they couldn't accept anything for various reasons. I was very disappointed with my experience at Plato's Closet. I brought in 14 bags of clean, stylish clothes in excellent condition, but they only accepted 2 items and offered me just $5. I understand that they can't buy everything, but the offer felt extremely low considering the quality and quantity of the clothing I brought in. The service was ok once someone waited on you but the women who went through my clothes not sure of her name she is an older women gray hair and glasses was so rude! I could not really believe it and when I asked to talk to the manager she said she was the manager. She said my clothes had stains on them which I knew they did not because I washed them before hand. I went in to Plato's to see if some of my items were things they would buy for the first time. All of the ladies working were not engaging . Some almost seemed bothered. the quality of the items are the racks were not quite what I would call eye catching. as a person who has being doing customer service for over 30 yrs there was no energy in the store that made me want to go back again . the very first time I went after the store opened it was worse and the store smelled of cat urine, so it was better in the sense that it did not smell. They were faster than I thought at checking my items and sending me a text that my items were ready for pick up. I did find some gently used vans for a decent price. As a leader in customer service your employees are setting the tone and it is not welcoming maybe because i am not 20 or because I'm not a model. But I would hope all would be welcomed when they come in. The security guard at Burlington (their neighbor store) did a better job at greeting. My daughter who is in the age bracket for this store also did not have a great browsing experience. Basic manners and eye contact goes a long way , maybe the ladies working should be reminded that without the customers they would not receive a paycheck read more

Went today with two full bags of freshly washed, some brand new never worn pants, three pairs of brand new shoes all black (booties, flats, and sandals) and then a bunch of stuff I've bought FROM THEM. They took 4 items and gave me less than $10 saying my stuff was "too old, too formal, and not their style" mind you I had 5 brand new pairs and plain different colored pants and shoes. Took less than 20 minutes to go through it but I'm doubtful they even did. They hired people with horrific customer service (including management) their buying process& what they select is an absolute joke. They offer less than 50% of the value they will sell the items in store for, with no 'store credit' option. Said my clothes which were freshly washed and dried felt "damp", even though i told them i rode over an hour and they sat in front of my ice cold ac. They just didn't want to look them over, bc they texted me within 2 seconds of me walking away from the counter after handing over my clothes. So surprised to see such negative reviews on here. I asked a person on instagram to recommend me some good secondhand clothing stores and let me just say I went to town as soon as I got in. Seems that most people take issue when selling items to Plato's Closet which I haven't done yet but plan to do on my next trip. Although it's a thrift store I would say it's more like a consignment, so when clothing gets rejected for whatever reason I don't think it warrants a bad review. If you want to get rid of clothes that you don't want and will most likely just sit on racks then you're better off giving it away to friends/family or donating to a Savers/Goodwill. This location is clean and organized. The racks are filled with trendy and fashionable teens/juniors clothing, sorted by color and type of garment-- similar to Goodwill which I appreciate since I like to keep my closet palette in the neutrals. A lot of super cute F21, American Eagle, and Urban Outfitters clothing! To me, the only downside is that their men's section is quite small in comparison to all the selection they have for women's but I find that most secondhand stores are that way. On this particular day they were having a 70% off clearance which was easy to find since they separate sale clothing and regular priced clothing. Pricing is very good as well, there are SOME pricier items but it is usually because it is great quality and brand name-- and even then there are some brand names here that you can find at a great price, most shirts ranging between $5-$10! Staff welcomed me as I walked in and was very helpful at checkout. The girl who rang me out was super sweet and signed me up for their rewards program, informed me of their 7 day return policy and that clearance items were final sale. Also, please keep in mind that this store is BAGLESS, so if you plan and making a trip then I recommend bringing your own reusable bag since you're most likely to find lots of gems here. Will definitely be coming back, it's definitely my number one secondhand/thrift store right now! read more

This is a terrible store. That day I brought a suitcase full of clothes to their store. They told me they needed time to get rid of the clothes. And told me to wait for their text. I asked when were coming to pick it up. They told me anytime. Because I'm a stay-at-home mom and I don't have a lot of time. They didn't tell me to come back same day and pick up the rest of my clothes. Otherwise take their unwanted clothes and donate them. This is a bandit. I brought them 80 pairs of clothes and pants. Most of them have labels on them. I ended up with a store credit of 89.3. It's outrageous. They texted me at 8:00 p.m. And it closes at 9:00. I'm at home with three kids and I don't have time to look at my phone. And 40 minutes drive from their store. And most important things they didn't tell me I had to come back same days . Crazy . . . I've always loved this place. The prices are great, and you do find some really cute things. What I think people don't see is that this store is in a bad part of the city, there are a lot of rude people that come in, so sometimes it's hard to keep a smile on your face. Also, there is sometimes things like masks in the fitting rooms and other trash, but I know they can't always get to that immediately when people drop it in there. It's a busy place sometimes and they're only human, it doesn't help when people are consistently in and out of the fitting rooms by themselves. Another thing people don't understand is everybody has their own personal idea of "style" and "what's hot". Your idea of something really cute might be different from what teens/young adults are actually into, and you can't really blame the employees if they pass on it. They have their own personal style too. Don't expect to drive over an hour and make hundreds of dollars, you get around $6 for a pair of jeans, a dollar or less for jewelery (depending on the item), maybe a few dollars for a top... it's a used resell store. You can't expect to make a fortune. They turn down items if they have an odor or are covered in fur because all the clothing goes directly to the floor. All they ask is you wash everything beforehand and it makes the buying process so much easier and cleaner. There's a lot of misconceptions about this place, but it's overall a solid business and they're doing their best. It's a very opinionated store when it comes to buying because you can't just force people to like the same things as you, everybody's different. I'm only giving 4 stars because it is a bunch of teenagers hired there that do occasionally give attitude, but I feel like I can't really blame them with how they are treated on a daily basis by people who come in and yell at them just because they didn't take the extra step to wash their clothes ahead of time. Call ahead if you REALLY wanna know what they're taking, and don't be disappointed if your clothes aren't totally in style to the specific person sorting through your items. Over the past year I've found some really great items here. I consigned once and they took all the stuff I expected them to pass up (older, more worn exercise tops, etc). Some of the items also need a spot check like another reviewer said. Deodorants stains on some of the items, rips from wear, stains on sleeves, etc. I went in the fitting room recently and the place looks like it hasn't been cleaned it months. Dust piling up like tumble weeds in the corner of the dressing room, dirty mask on the floor (not mine! Ew!), dust on columns between dressing rooms, the floor had miscellaneous clutter throughout the aisles. This place definitely needs a deep clean and some change. Most of the employees are nice but some are passive aggressive and snobby. read more

Went yesterday for fun, and was disgusted by the outrageous pricing. Lots of very dirty and well worn shoes for $15 or more. There were walmart brand sneakers labeled as Nike for $18. There were also $5 family dollar sandals for $18. Lots of SHEIN clothing for $10 or more. Someone taking/pricing stuff is absolutely clueless as they're pricing stuff for way more than it costs new. It wasn't like this last time I went a few months ago. Very disappointed, probably won't be back to this location. read more

Zero stars if I could! Ridiculous. They post a board of what they are buying then refuse items for "wear" when there is a lint ball on it. Like new condition brand name items refused for single lint balls. That's what happens to fabric. Also apparently there is a policy they can't accept inside out items. Like any other thrift/resale/consignment store they may have many other bags of clothes to go through before yours. Other people may have dropped clothes off before you. You may have to wait! Call ahead and ask, "if I bring in a black plastic trash bag full of clothes how long will I have to wait.?" You can always drop and come back. The staff have to look some items up online to see how much things are going for new, then they look at the items you brought in to assess the state they are in. Be patient!!!! read more

The excuse for not taking clothes is always the same. They have too much inventory. If they have too much inventory then why is there a want list at all? I see so many people leave there pissed off. if I could give zero i would. this place is a joke. i brought 3 trash bags worth of brand new clothes that I've barely worn. including $300 worth of lululemon leggings that have absolutely no wear on them. they didn't take 1 pair. instead they offered me $24 for a brand new with tags pair of jeans, a Boston Celtics sweatshirt and a couple other random things. I don't believe my bags were thoroughly gone through. everything I brought was name brand and besides a little lint that's inevitable (that they could easily get off) they chose to turn mostly all of my items away. i didnt accept the $24 for the random things they took. avoid this place. sell your clothes on poshmark instead. read more

I've been here several times and I am surprised at how poor the reviews are. I am out of their age bracket, but my daughters are not and they love shopping at Plato's closet. I also got a really cute Michael Kors bag there for $50! It's kind of crowded and it's definitely just for trendy type clothes, not work clothes or things like that. I would recommend Plato's Closet in this location to anyone looking to make a few extra bucks for clothing and accessories they are no longer using. I have been there a handful of times now, each time bringing a few bags of gently used clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories and left with cash every time. They don't take everything and while I don't always agree that something has "too much wear" your other option, as you would have done with this stuff anyway, is to give them away to friends and family for free and or donate them to your local drop box or salvation army. Selling to Plato's is a lot faster and easier than selling on Poshmark. It truly blows my mind that people get upset when they are offered a fraction of the full retail price for their items. Well.... duh? This is a business, they're here to make money while offering fast fashion. Of course they aren't going to take things that have a dated style (who would buy it? It would just be sitting on their racks just like it's just sitting in your closet) and of course they aren't going to pay full price (How would they be able to keep their prices down to bring in customers that in turn allow Plato's to keep buying your clothing? They need to make a profit somewhere?) You are taking your USED items and getting INSTANT CASH for them instead of dumping them somewhere. You can also shop with the credit AND you don't have to wait in line like other places that do this sort of thing. They have a drop off desk where you fill out your info (name, phone number, how many bags you brought and what they look like, etc) and will receive a text when your bag has been processed if you don't want to wait. Seems like a no brainer to me! To top it all off, the staff is always kind to me and, on multiple occasions, have come back out to my car with me to help me bring in bags when I couldn't do it in one trip. Give them a shot, clear out that closet and make some money while you're at it! read more

Stay away! Seriously. If you are trying to get rid of some of yours or your kid's clothes just drop it off at Goodwill. They are rude, unhelpful, uncaring, unprofessional (zero flexibility). I had to go to this store about 8 times and they could not even keep my bag because they are "oh so busy" to bother. They will probably give you $10 for clothes they will resell for a 350% profit. I'd say go on Poshmark, Ebay or Mercari before giving these people business. Unless you like to be treated poorly by people with no customer services skills. Also, consider donating at Savers for a 20% off coupon or a place connected to a charity you believe in. Extremely disappointing! I will let all moms I know to stay away when getting rid of our teen's clothes. I used to sell there when I was in college as well as to Buffalo Exchange. This location is by far the rudest and less accommodating. They had room for my bag, but refused to keep it even after I explained how impossible it is for someone who has other responsibilities to keep coming back. This is the worst business I have ever seen or heard of. They took my clothes and 10 minutes before they close called me and said if I didn't pick up my items they would be donated to charity. I was never told I had to pick them up the same day, and they said anything they bought would be changed to a store credit. I will never shop there. Went there around November/December and I had a bag of some spring clothes that they were interested in and told me to bring it back in a couple months. So I had the employee write down a note with her initials saying they will take it all the next time I come in. I went in today and they gave me half the bag back saying they got "a lot" of spring clothes already and can't accept it when meanwhile the other employee is standing there accepting other people's spring clothes. This bag has been sitting in my trunk waiting for the "right time" to bring it back just so they can just give it back? So I had turned around and seen two little girls with their mother and I gave them my bag of clothes for free. This store is ridiculous on how they run the shop. Please don't bring your items here! Complete lack of customer service. No one offered to help open the door or provide assistance when I was bringing my clothes in (several trips in and out). They took down my information incorrectly despite correcting them. The associates are rude. When I called for a status of my items they had already discarded the articles of clothing they didn't want. They also could not find my information within there paperwork and accused me of lying-eventually they found it. They are very unorganized and I would highly recommend going to another location where the customer service is better and where you will be treated with respect. read more
