I have brought clothes here more than once. I've always been treated by very friendly staff and have had a good experience. They've taken my clothes and yes they don't pay much but they don't charge much either if you look at the prices in the store. Overall the stock in the store is nicely displayed and clean. Wish I could give this place 0 stars!! I had 2 bin of clothes to sell to this location. I specifically called them when I was half an hour away to make sure they were still accepting clothing. I was assured that that was no problem! I arrived and carried both of the heavy bins all the way into the store and they informed me that they weren't able to take them today. What?? Due to the fact that they had given me assurance on the phone and I had driven half an hour, they should've made an exception, but they were completely unwilling to budge. I've had luck selling clothes here in the past. I would bring in two very large reusable shopping bags + have my fiancé bring in two for me (because you're only allowed 2 bins per day per customer) and only leave with less than 1 bag full. They typically compliment my "really great items". I recently went in over the weekend and they took SIX items from me and ZERO from the other bag. They also gripe that they are in desperate need of men's clothes. I brought in at least a whole bag full of them with great brands like Nike, Jordan, adidas, etc all in excellent used condition, freshly washed and folded. They took none of it! So basically I drove down 45 minutes, paid gas and tolls, wasted my time, only to receive 18 dollars. Mind you (even if you get there within half an hour of opening) sometimes you wait 3-4 hours for your items to be processed. Did I mention the new location is in the absolute worst area? I hate traveling route 1 and it's tacked on an extra 10-15 minutes onto my route there depending on traffic. Sometimes I'll take a peek through the clothes on the racks to find clothing very well past "excellent condition" and way out of date, horribly distasteful clothing such as a dress that looked like a potato sack, yet they've rejected some of my clothes due to overall wear and non-trendy styles. Other times, I'll grab a couple bags before I leave, but most recently I left with none. They keep them in the most awkward area behind the register, so far away that you can hardly see them. Then you're looking, squinting at them, right above the staffs head most likely making them feel like you're staring at them and giving them dirty looks. I typically ask for them to pull any bag within 3 brands and certain price points so we could avoid all the hoopla, but the very last time I went, the girl had me "walk around the counter" with her. I only asked to see a handful of bags because again, it was extremely awkward, and they seemed to be irritated at me asking after a few. I passed on all the bags I looked at because they were all priced between $40-$50 that I wouldn't have minded paying if they weren't absolutely disgusting on the inside and all chewed up on the outside. The other thing that irritates me is that they tell you that you're items need to be neatly folded when you bring them in and then they completely disregard that when they repack your bags by just shoving everything back in. The only reason I've been going there was because I was liquidating my online store of clothing since I switched completely to handbags. Needless to say, I won't be going back and I've chosen other routes to sell my clothes in bulk on Facebook marketplace and higher end consignment shops. Plato's closet in portsmouth will drive themselves out of business soon enough. read more

Ok place to buy clothes. Every time I go in to sell clothes they either "have met their cash limit" or today for example, don't even give store credit all together. Poorly run Plato's coming from a former employee of a store in Michigan. The staff is typically unprofessional and plays inappropriate music for a family store. I stood on the side walk for a few minutes before opening time to be among the first in the door to sell some Dooney and Bourke handbags. I realize they have only so much in cash per day to offer. Otherwise, you get store credit. They wanted my phone number to text me when they would be done with my items. It took 45 minuets which was quicker than the hour they quoted me. I received my text and returned to the store after running errands near by. They had itemized the handbags in their computer by brand and told me they were only worth $15 for all 4 bags. This summer they gave me $80 for 3 bags. My bags were within a year old and current styles and season. My reaction was confused and the a little stunned. I thanked the staff person for their time and took my bags home. I would rather donate my handbags to my local church thrift shop where they can get the cash for the community. The store smells so strongly of antiseptic that I could not wait there while they looked over my items. read more

Not sure what this store is looking for. I brought in a bag with Lululemon, Toms, Free People jeans, North Face, etc. They took 3 items (paid me $15) and told me most of my items were out of style for their store. I looked around the store and didn't see anything particularly "stylish" compared to what I was showing them. Mostly sweat pants and T-shirts. I won't make the drive to this store again. The employees are rude and don't know the first thing about fashion trends. If the person sorting your bag doesn't know how to read a label, they will reject you. The previous reviews tell the complete truth. I recently brought in a bag of clothes that have all been purchased within a year (Abercrombie and Fitch, Levi's, American Eagle, Ect) and a good amount new with tags and never worn. I was told I would get a text when they were done sorting threw my items and that it would be a while since there was only 2 girls working. That was totally fine and went on with my day. I never got a text so I assumed I would just pick up what they didn't take the following day. No surprise to me, that was completely false. Not only did I not get a text, I got a phone call at 8:30 PM. 8:30?! I can't just up and leave at 8:30 pm because they did not send a text or notification at a DECENT TIME. I went in the next morning to not only have the girl shove the bag back to me but tell me they couldn't take anything because I "didn't pick up the clothes the day of." Fine whatever I was not about to argue with a girl who clearly had better things to do than be at work. I walked to my car and noticed a good amount of items missing from the bag. Noticeably all the items with tags still on them. I went back inside and the girl goes oh sorry you have a $30 store credit and haven't "donated your items yet since you didn't pick up the day of." DONATE ? Yeah right. I browsed the store a bit but the strong smell of air freshener (if you want to call it that) made me sick to my stomach. The racks are filled with poor quality clothing items, outdated items, and even items from places like Walmart and old navy. Nothing trendy. The shoe section resembled my 2016 college closet. Donate your clothes to girls who are less fortunate and completely skip this scam of a store/company. read more

I really think the prices here are pretty fair, especially for the shoes. Yes, its' a young crowd that works here. Yes, the music and attitudes of the store reflect that. I've also had stuff that wasn't purchased, but thats just the way it is people. The Momager there is awesome! She knows how to talk to her (youngins') employees, and they respect her. The store is always in order, and organized. And when you hit it on a sale day...amazing. If anything, they need woman of a certain size (16+) to bring in their clothes so those of us who would shop there more often will do so. read more

The girls working the counter were nice. They declined all of my items because of my age and "lack of teen styles." This place is not looking for nice, designer clothing. This place is so unfriendly to sellers... my sister only got ONE pair of jeans sold out of probably 50 items she brought in. I have been to multiple other Plato's Closets in other states and have had A WAY BETTER selling experience with selling close to 75% of the stuff I brought in. Awful store that pumps out air freshener to clearly hide some kind of smell in the clothing. I was getting nauseous being in there, even with a mask on. Also brought clothes in with tags, and were told they were too old. How does that matter if there are tags on things still? No one is going into a second hand store for the latest fashion. The customer service here is HORRIBLE. The employees were extremely rude. I walked in and was standing at the counter while the cashier name Chloe was standing there she acted like she didn't see me at first and once she actually looked at me she gave me a dirty look. I was so confused, and then I told her I had two bins and asked how much they would take, she replied we would only take a really small bin like a small kitchen trash bag full. I went to pick my clothes up (it took 2 hours which was fine with me) and the other cashier was not pleasant at all either!! I believe this place is under new ownership or management... Whatever the change is, it shows. We always used to feel like we were inconveniencing someone when we would come in, but now they were so friendly and personable even though it was quite busy with intakes. The two girls who helped us with the things we brought in and with the things we purchased could not have been more polite and friendly. In the past it has been a bunch of sullen teenagers who didn't appear to want to be there, much less deal with customers. :) The Instagram wall is a great idea, too. First of all I would give 0 stars if I could, but I did not feel welcomed or ever the multiple times I've been there. Everyone that works there seems extremely rude and not into their job at all. My friend and I are also teenagers with a job and would never behave the way these workers do. The whole time they were supposed to be taking care of us the two workers were gossiping and paying no attention to us. My friend and I thought that was very unprofessional. Also I have no idea why you would change your policy from cash to store credit. Something has never pissed me off so much. You should either get new employees or teach them how to have a work ethic and how to treat customers. I don't know if you've notice this store has some pretty bad reviews, so I suggest stepping it up. I hope my next time there won't be as disappointing. read more

Where do I begin...this place is just horrible. I brought some clothes in at 12pm and was told they'd get back to me in 30-40 minutes. A day later I get a text. Umm...okaaayyyy. I show up and they can't find me in the computer. They tell me they think they accepted all of my things but have no record of it. Again...okaaaayyyy. They then say they'll re-key in everything if I just want to hang around. Fine. Finally I get up to the counter and they tell me they know what happened and they don't want any of my things (even though most of the clothes are like new and just about all of the brands are the ones they said they want. Im not completely comparing my rating to my experience (several years in retail) But like many people have stated. The customer service is shitty like many places now adays with teens working in it. Depends whos working ... I get they represent the brand the demographic but even customers within this select demographic have written in about this. Its obvious the place is run by these teens and cant be trusted to represent the company in the best light for business. Ive sold several hundred dollars worth of clothing to this company and its hit or miss when you walk in... Rule of thumb ... Dont let your employees represent your company in a bad light this time around. Be present ( make sure they are doing their job " Professionally. ) Screen your interviewing candidates more. Put them on trial periods .. this isnt worth your franchise. I've hired people for less and have had professional and very hard working young employees. I've also been very close to opening up a consignment shop myself in a nearby area and i would have young employees . I would never let this happen over and over again. I know its under new ownership, and i believe there is some improvement. but this should be your priority Ive been in and sold clothing since its been under new owners Haven't been in awhile but I just hope this doesn't continue happening , its a shame and unfortunate that employees are almost a "risk" or liability . read more

I arrived with my items to sell around 10:45am. The girl was friendly and said in about an hour to an hour and half they would text me. So I left and came back an hour later just to check in because I read previous reviews. I was up next. So I waited inside while a young girl went through my items and talked gossip with the other employee. Once she was finished she gave me the total cash they would give me. She said my other items were "formal". I don't know exactly what that means. They passed on Maurice's jeans, LuLaRoe with tags, Gap, a sweater from a surf shop and a few scarfs. In my opinion I would not come back; to sell or buy. Staff seemed young and unprofessional. ( except one) I looked around some while waiting and it was a lot of junk. They are geared towards teens but even so, not great stuff. read more

I came in on Monday evening and brought in a box of items. The girl at front just walked away and then another girl had to ask me if someone was helping me after I stood there for a while. They then told me they would text me once they evaluated my items, I live an hour away so this isn't exactly convenient for me. Needless to say I left expecting to get a call or "text" later that evening or the next day. I didn't receive a call until Wednesday mid-morning telling me to come pick up my stuff. When I arrived they put everything in a trash bag and told me it was too mature for the store. Extremely unprofessional staff. The store manager was yelling at someone on the phone as well which I thought was a bit unprofessional. Also, the music that was playing was awful. I had once asked on a FB post if there was a particular time you needed to drop things off by, they stated to come by anytime on any day. I drove 40 minutes to get here to be told that, "Unfortunately we can't buy anything today. We had to put our sign up earlier than normal." What a waste of time, gas, and toll money. Call before you go! & ask clarifying questions...Nice staff, but they need to work on relaying pertinent information over the phone when people call before making the trip over... Came in yesterday to find out they had met the buy limit for that day. Sure okay, I didn't call beforehand. Called shortly after opening today & they're buying - great! Get there to be told they will only take what fits in one bin, plus you have to wait in the store while they go through your items & they have an order ahead of me. Knowing I'd be waiting for over 30 min in-store would have nixed my plan to sell. If you're driving from farther distances I'd recommend hitting up Plato's Closet on S Willow St in Manchester instead of this location. You can drop off clothes (no limit) & receive a text once they're finished. I've never seen a buy limit sign on the door either. read more

I have a hard time trying to decide if I like this store. They've been open for about a year and what I've experienced there so far hasn't really changed. The customer service could be better, I often feel like I'm bothering the employees if I need anything, and otherwise I feel like I'm just being watched when I shop. They seem to have a lot of personal conversations going on and don't greet most customers when they come in. The music is god awful, super loud intense rap music which is not pleasant to listen to at all. However on the positive side, they do have for the most part a good selection of clothing and the prices are priced right on most things. It's been weeks, I've called and gone into the shop, but have heard nothing. i also use Poshmark and sell whatever Plato's doesn't buy on there. I made a yelp account just to leave this review. Some of the employees here are disgusting with the way they treat their customers. They treat you like you're stupid when you ask a question. I came in with my daughter to drop off some clothes and the girl told me it would be a while. We said that was fine, and we left to go to TJ Maxx. When we came back, our items were still untouched, and I asked the girl again. It had been over an hour at this point. She replied with the nastiest attitude and have no concept of customer service whatsoever. Then she left the store, I assume she went on break, which didn't make any sense to me since she hadn't even gone through our buy, even though we were the next one. My daughter and I have already spent a couple of hours in Portsmouth by this point and we were ready to go home, but this girl decided she wanted to take her break right before going through our items. However, this other girl working overheard the whole situation and quickly went through my items and I got paid over $100. I thanked her, because if it weren't for her we would have never come back. If management is reading this I taught my daughter how NOT to treat a customer like the first girl. Short with brown hair, I don't know her name. Train your employees better. read more

Very disappointing experience!! My daughter and I dropped off a large bag of clothes and were told it would take 1-2 hours to go through as they were busy. As we were leaving the store, they started examining my daughter's clothes. But we were patient and went off shopping and grabbed lunch. At 2 hours later, we returned to the store, NEVER RECEIVING A TEXT but finding 2 out of 3 of the very young adults/teenagers on their phones. When we inquired about the clothes, letting them know we never received a text, there was no apology or explanation. They said they would only take 2 shirts for $5!!! They explained that they could not take kid's sizes. However, these were 15/16 from AE etc. so equivalent to a 0/1-2 in women's. What bothers us is that they knew this but never told us or sent a text right away explaining this versus us wasting 2 HOURS of our time. (and again they never texted at all) Again, no apology or explanation. Honestly, they seemed to care less!!! To put a positive spin on this, I took this as a opportunity to teach my 14 year old daughter how not to be when you start working someday. read more
