After driving by for years, we decided to finally give them a try and weren't disappointed. We were greeted as soon as the door opened and sat immediately. Most of the meal we had the place to ourselves. The interior was clean and decently maintained. Complimentary chips and salsa were delivered then our drink orders were taken. Chips and salsa: freshly fried, warm corn tortillas and mild salsa - no spice, good flavor. Chilaquiles con carne asada: red sauce, two over easy eggs and chips over carne asada, along side rice and beans. Good. Wet carne asada burrito: carne asada and pico de gallo inside a flour tortilla covered with red sauce and a sprinkle of cheese. I didn't try it, but my husband gobbled it down. Menudo: the tripe was tender and not gamey, hominy wasn't over board, and with the traditional additions, it was a good large bowl of menudo. Very tasty. Previous reviews weren't reflective of our experience. The service and food were great. There were regulars welcomed by name and the same friendliness was given to us newbies. The Carne Asada plate and the Chicken Enchilada plate was very good! I especially loved the Carne asada because it was flavorful and not dried out like most places. The Chicken inside the enchiladas came cut instead of shredded which actually made it easier to eat! If there was any growth that could come from this spot, it's the front desk/hostess area. They can't see you come inside, so they should consider that in case someone might be waiting awhile. Other than that, I like the music and the decor too. We would definitely come back! read more

I'm not sure if they got new owners or what happened but the quality of the food has gone down hill :( The prices went up which I honestly wouldn't mind if the food still tasted the same. There is one waiter who unfortunately just does not have good social skills and is always very awkward when she helps us. She does not say thank you or your welcome, well she really doesn't say anything other than ask for you order and then never comes back to the table. Ive spoken in Spanish incase she didn't speak English after the first few times of her not talking to us at all but still nothing. I mean for the love of God she could at least smile. Lol not trynna be mean! It's just super awkward and I'm always very nice to her because hey who knows what could be going on in her personal life. Anyway back to the food. As I mentioned prices went up. Every dish is about $2-$4 more. My bf ordered some kind of chicken sandwich and the chicken was super rubbery but hard at the same time? He spit it out and it made a loud ass sound when it hit the plate. ToThe ceviche tostadas have barely any shrimp and they add tiny pieces of carrots that overpower the whole tostada, it's a carrot tostada jk. But I'm bummed because this was my favorite thing to get. I will say that their shrimp cocktail is still pretty good but at the price they're at now you're better off going somewhere else. The previous owner was very nice and professional. He greeted everyone and always had a good attitude and smile on his face. I'm very bummed this place has changed so much, I've grown up coming here. I think he left and took all the good food with him. 5/8/19 Omg so I will no longer be coming even for the shrimp cocktails that I held onto so dearly. So, we are looking for some mariscos (seafood for you non-Mexicanos out there) and micheladas (beer/tomatoe juice/hot sauce/lime combo, I know you're cringing, but they are damn good) to cure the wicked hangover from the night before. Ended up here since we used to come here back in the days. This place is very unassuming little place, but it has been around for years. They got traditional Mexican music playing in the background, and you'll find alot of marisco loving locals here on Sunday mornings. I ordered the michelada and a shrimp ceviche tostada. Since I had to leave for another lunch date, had to keep it light. The tostada was good, and tasted fresh. It hit the spot and satisfied me just enough that I wasn't too full for the next round of food in a hour or so. My buddy had the steak and shrimp plate, and from what I heard he devoured it down. Gonna come back for another beer and their camarones aguachiles (hot lemon marinated shrimp) next time out. read more

Been wanting to try this place out and that was a mistake. My husband and I got the breakfast burrito and the California burrito. The sour cream on the California burrito tasted as if it had turned, it was seriously disgusting. The avocado they put on it was liquidy and only on the bottom of the burrito. I could hardly eat it, it had no taste other than the rancid sour cream. The breakfast burrito was overly salty, making it hard to eat... too much ham. Had a delicious authentic Mexican lunch with my husband. Had the chicken soup which came with rice, tortillas, and a cilantro/onion/lime sides. Plenty of good quality chicken in soup. Hubby had a mixed seafood cocktail which he devoured and thoroughly enjoyed. Lunch came with chips and salsa. Each table had a variety of hot sauces to choose from. Very friendly server and super clean restaurant. I highly recommend and I consider myself to be a true connoisseur of Mexican cuisine! I haven't been here in 20 years , I remember it being sooo good . I decided to go and take my kids for their first time . Since we are in the middle Covid and all restaurants have been ordered to eat outside , we called first to make sure they were open . They said they were and they had indoor dining . We show up and the only ones inside the restaurant. The staff are not wearing masks and it's a Pre Covid dining experience with Covid in full action .. whatever I haven't been here in a long time , my favorite carne asada plate is no longer on the menu . The burritos are fairly priced . My husband ordered a shrimp soup which had maybe 3 pieces of shrimp in it with mostly large carrots chopped up and a few other vegetables. My husband also ordered a 1/2 dozen oysters which he thought were rubbery and not fresh at all . We all ordered horchatas for drinks , as a horchatas emptied we requested refills . The waitress doesn't say anything but refills our drinks as needed . What she failed to mention was that refills are not free ! The most expensive charge on our bill was the $30 in horchatas ! That's insane ! Back to the old oysters and shrimps .. within 24 hours of dining at this place , my husband broke out in hives all over his body . Was nauseas and had terrible stomach pains . What happened to this place ? I will definitely not come here again . I'm really bitter about the horchata charges . Maybe they made up their loss in sales with us . THE WORST ! read more

The people that know me know that im all about Sea Food. I mean Mariscos, not just your grilled salmon and tilapia. I mean mariscos as in raw oysters on a half shell, raw shrimp aguachile; etc. Its hard to find a good place that sells these type of dishes around here. I would just go to Tj and have some great Marlin tacos and a great campechana, but why go to Tj when I have this great restaurant just 25 minutes away! Im telling you this place has the best mariscos (mexican plate seafood) around! Dont come here asking for carne asada tacos, thats just dumb, plus you might be disappointed and might want to take a bite of my food, then things could get ugly. My favorite thing to order here is a "tostada de camaron entero con pulpo" ask for it that way. Its not ceviche bruh. Order it and thank me later. It can get messy so handle that tostada! The micheladas are great too. The aguachiles are great and the oysters are small compared to the ones I usually have but they are fresh. The service ia good, a bit slow and there is a guy that works there that has a unsettling smirk on his face at all times. The food makes up for it tho. Again you come to a restaurant called "playa azul" (translated "blue beach") you come to eat seafood not carne asada tacos. Great place tho I recommend yoy try it when in the area. read more

Growing up as a kid my mom would bring me here on Sundays to unwind and eat some great mariscos. Now as an adult I still enjoy this place with long time friends for some much needed Micheladas. The oysters are fresh and tasty!!! Camarones aguachile were just the right amount of kick and plenty of my fav...lime! Sundays are good for Menudo and Pozole rojo which is what I had and came pretty close to moms pozole but not quite there. Caldo de 7 mares is one of my favorite soups but make sure to get the small order if you are not that hungry because the large is too much. You know this place is authentic when the menu is in Spanish! My husband and I came here looking for something "different" for dinner. We thought about the aguachile we tried and loved at TJ Oyster Bar in Chula Vista and decided to try to find some in north SD county since we weren't planning on driving over an hour just to get food. Found Playa Azul on Yelp and I'm glad we stopped in. It's located in a small plaza with a laundromat next door. Tons of spaces in the parking lot though I'm not sure how it is during the day when the other shops in the plaza are open. The waitress that took our order was very helpful in explaining the menu items to us as we do not speak/read Spanish. We ended up ordering the camarones aguachile as well as 2 micheladas and loved it! The aguachile was pretty spicy so beware if you can't take the heat. I'm not a big fan of beer, but thought the micheladas were pretty good. Everything on the menu is under $15 - seafood items being closer to the $15 mark, everything else around $4-10. Another thing to note is that they have live mariachi bands playing (not sure if it's every night or only on certain nights, but we went on a Saturday). My husband and I will definitely be back for more aguachile and to try the rest of the menu! read more

Super sketchballs location and appearance but surprisingly good food. If you can get past the ghetto eye sore that it is, you'll be quite satisfied with the shrimp. The only reason I came in here was to try the michelada which was sounding good, and it was! They serve it in a big mug filled more then half way with delicious clamato and spices and beer on the side, tasty! I also ordered food, the shrimps are very good here, everything grilled at order. The garlic shrimp tasty, not too greasy, grilled with onions and celery, I ate it all up. Standard rice and beans could skip the side salad. I am a ceviche fan and I'm am disappointed to say the ceviche had too much lemon juice and was overwhelming with vegetables opposed to a balance of shrimp and flavor. This place should change ownership , the food is not that great .last week they had lived music and everything was ok until one of the cashiers approached us telling us they knew us and we was under age. She came at us very rude and very desrispectful. In the first place if they were doing their job the right way they should ask for ID before serving alcohol ( we was not under age by the way) but the cashier was . Wow this place is awesome. I walk in not so sure about this place, them I'm greeted by a very courteous gentleman named Christian who even offered me a free taster of their new citrus drink. The guy couldn't have been any nicer to me, made me feel welcome. My food came out and is better than I had expected, too, a very delicious caldo de res soup. Many Mexican restaurants don't offer this soup because it's harder to make. Check out all the food I got for under $9. I will definitely come back here!!
