Great drinks, friendly service, and poolside relaxation We had a great experience at the beach bar located at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, FL. This was our first stop after arriving at the hotel -- we sat at the bar for lunch and drinks, and it set a great tone for the trip. Marcelle was our bartender and server, and she was wonderful -- super friendly and made one of the best Rum Runners I've had. We shared chips with salsa and guacamole, along with a chicken quesadilla -- all fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. Even though there's no direct view of the ocean from the bar area, the atmosphere was still really pleasant and relaxing. This is also the same spot that provides food and drink service to the upper pool deck, which we took full advantage of. Being able to order poolside made it easy to kick back and truly unwind -- the service was prompt and the drinks stayed just as good. Highly recommend stopping here whether you're staying at the Diplomat or just visiting the area. Solid food, great cocktails, and a welcoming vibe. read more

Great poolside/ocean view bar that's part of The Diplomat. Took a quick break from the conference and decided to grab a drink along with a light bite with a coworker. I got the piña colada and he got the frosé. Both drinks were frozen and delicious. We also ordered the salsa and guac that came with tortilla chips. The guac had a slight kick to it and the salsa had a delightful smoky taste. The bar is in between the ocean and the hotel pool and has a great view of the ocean along with tvs at the bar. There is an automatic 20% gratuity, but the bartender was super friendly and attentive, so it was worth it. read more

The first rule when visiting a casual pool- and beachside bar/restaurant contained within a large resort hotel in a big tourist area is have the right expectations. Prices will most likely be inflated. Food and Service can be hit-or-miss. Ambiance can either be really good or really mediocre. My husband and I came here for lunch on two consecutive days during our stay at The Diplomat. Both times we were seated by the railing that overlooked the beach. We were not disappointed by the service or the food. The former was just right and the latter was quite tasty. My husband ordered the chicken quesadilla both times. Granted, it's hard to screw up a quesadilla but it was just the right size and came with guacamole and 2 other sauces for dipping. I opted for the "blackened" mahi mahi sandwich (which wasn't really blackened but still good) and the citrus butter greens with chicken. Portion sizes were pretty decent. Yeah, prices were comparatively high, but again, one must have the right expectations. For us, they were met and maybe exceeded a little. read more

CUBANO - $20 I thought I'm near Miami - I should get the Cuban sandwich. It was pretty salty - slow roasted mojo pork, sliced country ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickle, and dijonnaise. I went w/ the fruit salad for my side - cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapples ... very good! CHICKEN TENDERS - $18 The fried chicken tenders had tons of breading. Not a fan. But the seasoned fries were good. Big portion. But seriously, $18 for chicken tenders? I'll still give it 4 stars - our server was very friendly, it's right on the beach, ... just too pricey. This place was good for what it was. We tried the in room dining from here and the menu was so small and so were the dishes. Food was cold and some was even not cooked. Had Playa at the pool each day for lunch and it was as expected for pool food. The wings and chicken tenders were the best part. They stuffed way too many jalapeños into the fish dip and made it inedible. The Service was amazing however they kept the cabana clean and always checked in on us. All in all just a few more options would have been great. When staying at a place for 5 days options are always good especially with 2 small kids and not wanting to leave the hotel. read more

Stayed at The Diplomat for a conference and decided to grab something quick and easy before going to the convention. The staff and service was very friendly and even pulled a table out of the rain to accommodate me. The downside was that the condiment tray had a few tiny mites crawling over it from being outside. The fish tacos were alright but in my opinion shouldn't have cost as much as they did and it only comes with the tacos - no side. On top of that they charge an 18% gratuity no matter what. Overall ok place if you need to grab something quick and want to eat outside beachfront. read more

We were staying at the hotel where this restaurant is connected so we made this our first stop after we flew in. We sat down and weren't greeted for quite some time. Once we were greeted, it took a while for our drinks to get to the table. We quickly put in our food order of guacamole to ensure it wouldn't take too long and we could hit the pool to get some sun. The appetizer took quite some time and weren't checked on to get a refill on our drinks for quite some time. Was staying at the Diplomat and needed lunch, Playa is very convenient and didn't require me to move from my chair. I was a little worried based on reviews, but got the chicken sandwich (comes with fries) and my friend got the salsa roja. I'd give a 4+/5 for both. The chips were crispy, the salsa (more like a sauce) was good, the chicken sandwich was giant and tasty with TONS of fries (shared with a friend). The price is on par with the rest of the hotel - expensive, but sometimes you have to pay for convenience. read more

Came to the diplomat for a massage and decided to stay for lunch. This seemed to be the only restaurant opened at the time so we decided to check it out. It's an outdoor restaurant with good music and you are right next to the beach so we had a great view. For appetizers we ordered the tostones, which unfortunately didn't taste fresh. We also ordered the tropical guacamole which I thought would come with mango but instead came with a mango like sauce on top. Not very impressed by this either. We can shrimp with the guacamole and only 3 small shrimp came with the order. For the entree I ordered the chicken tacos. I liked the taste but they're were drenched in the sauce, I think a little less sauce would be ideal. My husband got the watermelon and tomato salad with mahi. The watermelon felt a little on the soggy side and didn't have great taste. The mahi addition was tasty. read more

For such a nice resort, I really expected the restaurant to be a bit better and for the menu to have a few more options for dinner. When we arrived, my friend and I looked over the menu and were surprised by the limited options but were so hungry that we decided to stay. We decided that we would start with guacamole w/ chips and then split a burger. When the waitress came, we ordered water to drink and then the guacamole to start. About 15 minutes later, she came back and asked if she could take our main order to get it started as they should bring out the guacamole shortly. We said ok and ordered as she suggested. 10 minutes later, our food came out and no guacamole was found (until we were halfway through the burger). By that point, we had no interest in the guacamole and were annoyed they would bring an appetizer after dinner. Regardless, we tried a bite and it was just not good. The chips were stale and the guacamole was lukewarm like it had been sitting out. Luckily, when we informed the waitress she removed it from our bill but still, it wasn't a pleasant experience. We will not be back and I wouldn't recommend a visit here. We did not seem to be the only table experiencing issues. read more

I'm so incredibly disappointed. We have been coming to the diplomat every year until covid and our favorite spot was the plays beach bar & grill. We could come in from the beach, eat some delicious and high quality food, and enjoy ourselves. We actually looked forward to it as much as the stay itself. Today is our first time back since COVID. The menu has changed which happens over the years and isn't a big deal generally, but the quality of the food itself is absolutely horrendous. What was once high quality ingredients and flavor packed dishes is now bowling alley nachos and salads that look and taste like they've been sitting in a Tupperware for days wilting. We ordered the fish tacos, the nachos with chicken, and the sandia salad then chicken fingers and fruit for our child. The nachos were shockingly bad. Literally taste like bowling alley nachos except way more stale. The salad was old and the watermelon looked and tasted like it was cut last week. Even the kids chicken fingers tasted and felt identical to the ones you'd buy at a grocery store in their hot foods area. Mind you, the total after tip (only ordered water) was $106. We looked forward to this and now have to figure out where to grub hub our food for the next 4 days. The hotel as a whole has lost its luster but this was the icing on the cake. read more

Let me say the food was very good. I had the Tropical Guacamole w Yellowtail on top and it was fresh, unique and quite tasty. The view is also nice -- the restaurant is just outside the lower pool deck on the beach side and virtually every table has a perfect ocean view. It was a bit toasty, but that's ok as the restaurant is completely outdoors. The service was poor. I arrived at noon and was immediately seated. Ten minutes to get drink order. Ten minutes to bring drink. Ten minutes to take food order and 20 minutes to get food. Twice food was brought to my table which wasn't mine -- which is fine except the waiter asked "are you sure?" And I definitely was as I don't like watermelon and I already had my food when a chicken sandwich arrived. Both times it belonged to nearby tables. Took almost half an hour from the time I requested check until payment was completed. Server was pleasant and I know there are labor shortages. Just beware if you have a limited amount of time to eat as I did because of business trip plans. read more

Playa is a fine spot to grab a snack or drink while you're enjoying the pools at The Diplomat Beach Resort. The pools are awesome! If you're staying at The Diplomat, or have an opportunity to visit, I definitely recommend checking them out! While your there, unless you want to go inside the hotel and try something more sit-down, the only spot to grab a bite and drink is Playa. It's fine, but the atmosphere won't blow you away. It's pretty much a simple bar and some seating in the pool area. The food and drinks are perfect for a pool day though! We had Guacamole (with chips) and several drinks and everything was pretty good. read more

My burger arrived and the top patty was pink in the middle, but the bottom one wasn't?? It was gross! Our refills took forever and a day and they tacked on a $10 service charge? For their snacks they have guac & salsa but I think it's worth it to go adventurous and try out the tropical guacamole! Who doesn't love avocados? But how about a mix of mashed avocado, with a the tropical flavors of mango, then kick it up a notch with chipotle, and top it all off with toasted almonds ?!?! I've been on a kale kick recently so I went for the Kale Cesar and added chicken to it. As is the salad has romaine lettuce, black kale, pomegranate seeds, and cotija-anchovy dressing. Very light and refreshing but also filling. It is a little bit pricey considering its a more casual option but it has some nice views and located so close to the water options so its convenient. read more

Never brought water, kids got vigil Pina cold as instead of Shirley temples and my wife's wive was the wrong one. This after we made 2 special requests to the manager for drinks because the kids were getting restless. It took 1 hour 28 minutes to get our food. So we actually had a short stay at the Diplomat which is a pretty nice hotel, I would definitely recommend it. This pool side bar also had good food and drinks. Bartender was nice, and the food was quick. We had the Yuca Fries, Cuban Sandwich, Fish Tacos and Tres Leches... they were all delicious, and I would order all of them again. The hostess, Latoya was so kind. I didn't even realize she wasn't the one taking care of us. We arrived close to their closing time but she was still kind. Check one. I had a question about something on the menu. She took the time to bring me a sample to make sure I would like it. Who does that? Check two. Because of all of that I actually thought she was our waitress. When we said we were ready to order, she mentioned she will send the waiter over to our table. She took care of us.
