I went here for the first time for lunch after craving some Mexican food. They had a good sized menu and I appreciated the lunch menu, which is a cheaper and smaller portion of some of the dinner menus. When you first arrive, you get chips and salsa for you to munch on while you wait. I ended up getting the dinner sized burrito pastor since they didn't have that option for lunch. It was huge when it came out and filled the entire long plate. The plate was warm so I suspect it could've been premade and microwaved. I appreciate they made it real al pastor style with pineapple to counteract the grill pork but I wish the pork would have been more marinated. All in all, it was okay. I was almost positive my meal came with rice but I never got if. read more

The California fish tacos are addictive! The fish is grilled/pan seared so no breading, and has consistently tasted delicious. The shredded cabbage, chipotle crema, and lime add the perfect touch along with the tender, fragrant corn tortillas. For an extra treat, get the fresh guacamole made fresh, at tableside. read more

Plaza Azteca is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Richmond. This particular location is located in the trendy West Chester Commons Shopping Center. This location is normally packed on the weekends, but so worth the wait. The staff is friendly and fast so even at capacity you won't wait too long! Their margaritas are delicious and they are not stingy with the alcohol. My favorite margarita is The Pama Margarita, which is pomegranate flavored. The food here is just as good. I normally order the beef chimichangas or the Burrito Mex. Both are flavorful and spicy just how I like it. Plaza Azteca uses jasmine rice, which is absolutely amazing! They by far have the best rice and beans. This simple dish is elevated with the jasmine rice. The portions are equivalent to the price so you are definitely getting your money's worth! The staff here is so nice. They are always equipped with a smile. They definitely want to ensure you are happy with your dining experience. Pretty darn incredible. Portions were massive beyond expectation, more authentic than I'm used to expecting. Prices were reasonable given the size-- paid a small fortune for a margarita but it came unexpectedly potent. Service was swift, atmosphere was on par despite numerous screaming kids but that'd happen anywhere. I've eaten a lot of queso fundido in my life, and this may have topped them all. They don't play around with the chorizo. Could easily feed two small appetites as a meal. read more

Do not go 1 hour before closing. They push chairs in front of you.. start sweeping floors in front of you. Assistant manager laughing at you and calling names in Spanish in front of staff. This is a place that I frequent a lot as it is a favorite with my clients and myself. The location can be tricky finding it as it is located somewhere (smile) inside The West Chester Commons Shopping Center off Midlothian VA. This is a popular spot especially on Friday's after 4:00p.m so plan on possibly having a short wait. The staff is friendly and attentive and worked diligently on taking care of our needs.The menu is superb and offers a wide variety of dishes. There is something there for even the pickiest eater. If possible check out their menu before going in order to narrow down your choices.Upon being seated fresh tortilla chips and salsa were brought out.Our orders came back fast. I came here expecting to give this place a poor review before I even got my dinner. I called ahead to order and they said I couldnt call in for a specific time and to call back later when I was ready to order. I called back later and went straight to voice mail 8 times so I finally decided to order online. I was trying to avoid this because I had some modifications to orders and it would be easier to talk to someone. I went to order online and put my whole order in and then it didn't give me an option to use my gift card to pay and it didn't give me an option to pay in store later. So I drove there and ordered in person. I didn't want to have to wait and there were a ton of people waiting for tables so I thought it would be a long time to get food. I think it was ready in 15 minutes and the host came over to check on me when he noticed I was still there. He got my food out immediately and the fajitas for two weighed at least 4lbs. We got up and paid the waiter a tip. Told her I was not paying for that food. She understood and said she wouldn't eat it either. Went for the first time tonight (Thursday), for dinner. Service was not bad. Perhaps it's improved since some of the previous reviews. Food was okay, but kinda bland as mentioned by other reviewers. It wasn't bad, just nothing to write home about. And considering they charge a few bucks more than other Mexican restaurants for their meals (and drinks), I expect better. The guacamole was quite fresh, but it was almost entirely avocado... no discernible spices... kinda bland. We added salt to give it some flavor. The salsa was pretty good, but nothing exceptional. I'd recommend saving a few bucks and going to a less expensive restaurant. The food will probably be as good, or maybe a little better, and you'll save a few bucks. P.S. What a terrible experience. My husband and I both ordered the Burrito Fajita. It was served to us within about 2 minutes of ordering and after tasting it, we knew why. It was dry, the chicken and steak was tough and it tasted like it had been microwaved. We complained to the manager who seemed irritated about being pulled away from the basketball game on TV. He replied that he had been the manager there for 5 years and that's how this meal had always been. He then proceeded to walk away leaving the server apologizing for the rudeness. This will be our last visit. There are so many great Mexican Restaurants within a few miles of Plaza Azteca. That is of course unless you prefer microwaved, processed Mexican food and outrageous arrogance from a manager who seems bothered by your patronage. read more

We visited Plaza Azteca in the Westchester Commons yesterday for a quick lunch and really enjoyed it. I love the decor and ambiance. Its a beautiful restaurant. We sat outside under a faux straw umbrella and enjoyed the weather. We ordered the lunch guacamole, queso dip,chicken taco salad and steak fajitas. The guacamole was made to order and it was fabulous! Our waiter Humberto was friendly and very attentive. Of course we ate way too many chips and salsa. Thats one reason I typically steer clear of mexican, the chips and salsa are addictive. Queso dip was very good. The steak fajitas were excellent. My taco salad tasted good but wasn't impressive looking. They may be able to spruce it up with fresh herbs. I was very impressed by the food, service and restaurant decor. read more

I'm really surprised by all the bad reviews. I went with a large party (10 of us) and the service was very attentive and friendly. They actually went out of their way to accommodate us while we were waiting in the bar area. Usually while you're in a bar area, you're ignored by everyone but the bartender, but the wait staff brought us chips, pushed the bar tables together for us, and were absolutely on top of the drink orders. And that was before we even moved on to our table! In terms of taste, I actually found this to be better than many of the places I've visited in Southern California. The ingredients were exceptionally fresh, and all of the salads were well-prepared. The presentation of the food was really well done also - it was colorful which is not only visually appealing, but indicates that the food isn't drowning in cheese/sauce and that they actually care about the more subtle flavors. As I write from the vegetarian perspective - I should note that 9 of the 10 of the people in my party are meat-eaters. In our party of 10 - three commented that it was the "best Mexican food [they'd] had", six of us "really liked it/loved it" and one of us - found their chicken dish to be oversalted and dry. From a vegetarian perspective, I was really pleased to see that they offered 8-10 vegetarian options (including a soup which is a rarity!) - far more than what I'm accustomed to in my home in Southern California. The vegetarian soup was delicious - a salty, savory flavor, and there was plenty of it. I would have liked to have seen a vegetarian salad option, though. So that's a 90% success rate from our table. Though the one person who didn't like their dish raved about the table-side guacamole. It was delicious and it was nice to know exactly what's in it, as so many Mexican restaurants use sour cream as a filler. Not the case here. I'll definitely go back the next time I'm in town, and I would highly recommend it to locals. read more

By and large the best chain restaurant for Mexican and the best Plaza Azteca of the Plaza Aztecas. I've also been to one on Broad, Midlo, down in OBX just to name a few and this one just seems to have it's $h!t together. The quacomole is perfection and just as I had requested; extra lime with lots of onions, lots of cinlantro. DELICIOUS! The store is also very well kept the only down side is the lay out. Something seems a bit off in there and I'm not sure what it is. I wanna say that the I don't like the hostess stand being so far from the door. Also the last time that I was there, there were a gaggle of girls all huddled around the waittress stand/hostess stand obviously clucking away about something, typical restaurant bad habits it was pretty amazing the amount of them huddled around there though. I will be back! Again and again. The price is right, the food is muy caliente and always fantastic. I swear they aren't making quacmole with avocados but rather heavenly butter. LOVE read more

Went 1st time tonight. The food is terrible. It tastes just like it was made from a store-bought package (e.g. "Old El Paso")...only worse. The salsa was bland, REALLY bland. The chicken and steak enchildas only contained non-seasoned meat... nothing else. The sauce on top of the enchilada was also bland. Refried beans: looked and tasted exactly like canned big brand variety. However, the real issue is that as soon as we entered, we were struck by the strong odor of urinal deodorizer. The smell permeated. Both the mens and ladies rooms have huge passage ways and do not have doors on them. While eating, the sound of flushing toilets was a problem. It does not help that the bathrooms are in the middle of the dining room, not in the rear or hidden as is usually done. read more

I would give this place -5 stars if I could . THE WORST service I have EVER received. Waiter couldn't have cared less to take our order, deliver drinks and food or god forbid, offer refills. I went to Plaza Azteca West Chester and when we paid our check. We realized that they over charged us in our drinks. My boyfriend order 16 oz beer that it was $3.50 and then he order 32 oz, they over charged him $9.50. If the 16oz cost $3.50 why the 32 oz is $7.00. My friend and I order a medium margaritas in the menu said $7.00 and they over charged us $9.50 as a jumbo for each drink. Please don't go to that plaza Azteca, they want to rip you off, when you're drinking. read more

We eat here often and never have serious complaints. The food is consistent and tasty. It's not overly greasy and the portions are reasonable. It may not be traditional Mexican but it's still a decent menu with some modern choices. The chips are AWESOME! They're always fresh and warm. If the red salsa is too mild you can ask for a hotter salsa for dipping. $8 for table side guac makes me mad because it's SO good but SO expensive. You can ask for a side of guac (specify "not tableside"!) for $2.25. Sometimes they do have table side guac as special for like $5. The service is average with some servers being great and some being slow and/or hard to communicate with. Food is served hot and fast. Drinks from the bar can be slow though. I wouldn't pay much attention to the negative reviews because there are always quite a bit of people eating here. It's often busy or has a wait list. read more

Went here for a friends birthday and was not disappointed. I had the potato shrimp enchilada which was very good. The other 2 people I went with had good food as well, but my last friend got one of the quesadillas and he did not like it at all. They also charged $1 extra for sour cream on the side which seemed kind of ridiculous to me. Other than that I was satisfied with my meal and it was a good price for the serving size. read more

The restaurant is quiet large with a family atmosphere, there is also have a bar area. We enjoyed the salsa and chips. I ordered chicken wings for starters I would skip those in the future. So today I ventured out to Plaza Azteca and took a look at the menu to find that they have changed. With that I ordered my usual "Plaza Del Mar"!!! So no scallops or seafood Alfredo sauce OK I can handle that. Now let's get real. The new lobster bisque came to me on the plate ICE COLD!!!! The Mahi Mahi was more than we'll done. It was cooked thru but pressed flat and had a texture of more than a brick than a piece of fish. Lastly service was slow very slow. I'll be looking for a New Mexican Restaurant!
