We kind of stumbled in here while strolling through the shopping area. It was the best Mexican food I've had in Oregon! Terrific menu, a slew of Margarita options. 2 in our party had burritos..one poblano, one veggie. They were huge, and delicious. One got a shrimp. Taco, very good. I had the Coctel de Cameron, which was fabulous! Two huge prawns on top, large shrimp, fresh avocado, onions, cilantro in a fabulous tomato broth. I had to take half back to finish later! Jarocho is a lively Mexican restaurant in the heart of downtown, the bar tables by the front window has a view of the river. The food is great; good eats & large portions. My favorite thing they offer is late night service in the summer. Astoria has very few late night food options, so Jarocho stays open until 2am during the "tourist" season. I will first say that we have lived in the Southwest since 2008 and eat Mexican food all the time. Been here for the last 3 months and we're missing it. Karely was a friendly and helpful server. So we were kind of disappointed with the food here. Maybe to others that don't eat it all the time they may think it is good. The Quesdilla with shredded beef was very good, chorizo taco, arroz con pollo that were average, salsa below average and the deep fried ice cream was different and very good. Wish I could rate higher than 5 stars! Food was so delicious, fresh guacamole and street tacos! My mom had the chicken fajitas and my little sister had the burrito. Both were very flavorful and delicious ! Service was just as amazing, you could visually tell they were short staffed but that did not stop them from keeping up with the big lunch rush! Wonderful menu choices! I love molẽ and wasn't disappointed with my chicken enchiladas with molẽ sauce. Mom & friend Betty split on order of nachos with ground beef & a chili relleno. They couldn't clean the plates ... so much food and extremely delicious. The service was so so. Fast with taking the order not so fast with delivery & the restaurant wasn't busy at all. Only 3 other tables while there. Betty & I had margaritas. She's had the tamarino and I had the classic. They were delicious. Strong enough but not kick my ass strong, just right. Once everything was at the table, the waitress didn't check in until we finished & she brought the bill. No big deal but it's always nice when the server checks if anything else is needed or at least to ask how the meal was. Nonetheless we left extremely full and enjoyed our lunch. I'd like to mention I'm from Southern California and enjoy great Mexican food at home. I've eaten at several Mexican restaurants in Oregon and am often disappointed with the food, salsa, and chips. No so at this place. Speaking of salsa, if you like spicy, as for the hot ones OMGOSH they are fantabulis!! You guys will be missing out it you don't go!! Located right on the pier near the water. You can see slivers of the water itself if you sit at the bar. The staff are quick, pleasant, and friendly. We stopped in for a late lunch and enjoyed our food at the bar. Chips and salsa were excellent, as well as the mango chamoy margarita. Most bland Mexican food I've ever eaten. Pork tamales had runny red sauce, more soupy than saucy. Masa was plain, and the pork was dry and flavorless. Pastor taco was even bland. Don't know how you can make something that is supposed to be vibrant and exciting for your taste buds, but end up with such lifeless meals. Location is good, ambience is okay, and service was on par with the food. Maybe they're catering to those people who don't like spice. read more

Since we are from Arizona, where there is a lot of Mexican food, we took a chance on Mexican Food while in Oregon. To our surprise this was more authentic than many places in AZ!! We got to talking to the bartender/waitress and found out she is from Sonora Mexico, just over the border from Arizona! We discovered El Jarocho a couple of years ago, and it has become one of our regular stops whenever we visit Astoria. The location is great for anybody walking around downtown or on the waterfront, and the space is very comfortable, with a great river view from the bar. The food is fresh and authentic. They make their salsa and use genuine queso, Mexican-style cheese, on the nachos. The "small" nachos are a light lunch for two, while the large would easily feed three. The steak option is delicious, and well worth an extra $2. The drinks are generous, the blue margarita has become a favorite. It's as big as it looks in the picture. The prices are reasonable and the staff is relaxed, friendly and efficient. When we're having lunch or an early dinner in Astoria, you'll find us there. read more

This place has good food. However, the service is almost always terrible. Nobody checks on you after you've received your food. Nobody asks if you want another drink. Just absolutely nothing. The food here is amazing, The menu comes from Vera Cruz Mexico. We were greeted with chips, salsa and frijoles. The Margaritas were delicious, as well as the rest of the meal. The service was wonderful, the server was friendly and able to make great recommendations on drinks or food. You get to sit on the pier and watch the boats go by, in a casual atmosphere. They obviously have a ton of seafood places in this town, but this is a must go to place. The prices were also good, very affordable. read more

The reviews for this spot gave me high hopes. The building looks pretty cool from the outside, but the restaurant decor was kind of odd - a lot of "live laugh love" -type plaques on the walls. The service was fine, but we did have to wait a while to order and even longer to get our check. We were also never checked on during our meal. I ordered the steak fajitas burrito (which was hardly a burrito at all) and it was honestly nasty. Not only was there hardly any steak or veggies, but the insane amount of refried beans was so goopy and cheesy that it was inedible. It was also weirdly sweet? Maybe it was just what I ordered, but I was go elsewhere for Mexican food (there's a taco truck right outside which I wish I tried instead!). You do get a lot of food for the price, but it went to waste for me. read more

We ate at one of the two tables outside, as it was a really warm day and we were baking already (inside has no AC). Drinks and food were solid! Service was lovely. Food is amazing. I can't rave about it enough and made my friends go with me another time. I got the fajitas quesadilla and it is a very large portion, but heats up super well. The cheese was so good on the quesadilla and can't go wrong with fajitas so the mix was perfect. I also tried the chimichanga the second time which was also a great portion size and headed up well. The only thing is the first time I went alone I sat outside and the view was amazing, however, the music was super loud. Honestly it was kinda distracting and not very enjoyable how loud it was. I didn't mind as much since the food was good and didn't notice it as much when I went with my friends, but we also went at like 2-3 so the restaurant wasn't super busy that there wasn't that noise adding to the loud music. There is a similar restaurant to this one in seaside as well with the same menu, but the location on the water is awesome if you sit outside. First time in Astoria and stumbled upon El Jarocho Mexican Restaurant and we ordered quesadillas, enchiladas, tamales, margarita and mojito and it was delicious. The food did not disappoint us. The service was great, our waiter made sure to refill our water and if we needed anything else besides what we ordered. The ambiance was chill and it was off the waterfront. It was beautiful. We stopped in for a drink after watching the sunset. Good location close to our air bnb, decent atmosphere. We got drinks and were thinking about food. My friends got a margarita and a Paloma and there was literally 0 alcohol in either of the drinks. I rarely drink and I would definitely taste if there was any in there. We decided not to get food, paid and mentioned it to the server. She was nice but $24 plus for drinks with no alcohol is ridiculous. read more
