In the last year I got my first filling here and had a horrible experience. The dentist refused to explain what was going to happen even when I asked multiple times. His lovely dental hygienist took pity on me clearly seeing it was important and tried to explain as best she could. Well sure enough the rushed job ended up with me having nerve pain and sensitivity for a month & a half afterwards but now I've gone to another dentist and I need the whole filling replaced because there is still a shadow of concern showing up on the X-rays and now the insurance won't cover it. One hurts so bad I cant chew on that side and is extremely sensitive to cold/hot water. I paid over $7,000. They said I should get a night guard which is another $450. read more

I been a patient for two years. And I had a lovely dental hygienist but didn't know she left. I was there last week and I believe they overcharged me even thought I had a dentist provider. I was there for a dental cleaning and X-ray. The dental hygienist just started that day and I know she only did a dental cleaning but office charged me for a periodontal. I know the difference since I've had this service many times. When I left I paid for my copayment in cash but the receptionist did not provide a receipt. I canceled my follow up. I called my provider the following week and I was shocked at the amount they wanted my provider to pay $700 the max for X-ray and standard cleaning. I also emailed the person handling the paperwork. But she sent me another paperwork for something else we talked about. The service I had was for cleaning and not a periodontal as submitted to provider. I will not be returning. If you're a patient please make sure you asked for receipt and whatever work you'll be having in the future so you can compare the paperwork against what they sent to dental provider. read more

I started going in 2017, and had years of great cleanings with Kerri, who was the best hygienist I've had. Then about 2 years ago they suddenly switched me to Lori, with no explanation...never even told me Kerri was gone. Lori is good too, so I didn't mind that much. But since then, I've just experienced so many issues that I ultimately have to find a new dentist. Here are the main issues: 1. Their price of standard xrays has gone up dramatically. I used to pay roughly $250 for cleaning + xrays. The last time I went, it was almost $400. When I asked what about it, the receptionist just shrugged and dismissively said "prices went up" without even looking away from her computer. If they go up that dramatically, I feel like I should have been told beforehand so I could make a choice if I wanted to do them or not. Instead, I feel like I got scammed, because I asked around to other dentists and they do them MUCH cheaper. 2. They got rid of their office manager who was great, and replaced her with a very rude lady (see the numerous other complaints about her on Yelp). I think they may have hopefully gotten rid of her as she wasn't there the last time I went. 3. The last time I went, I had an appointment for 10:00am. By 10:20am I was still waiting, so I asked. A hygienist I've never seen before came out, called me by the wrong name, said she could see me soon, seemed like in a big rush. I asked why I wasn't seeing Lori, my normal hygienist, and they told me I wasn't scheduled for her. Uhhh...what??? I don't like being just switched around randomly without any communication (again). So I told them to cancel, and now I'm searching for a better organized dental office. This used to be a fantastic dental office, so I'm pretty stunned at the dramatic decline. My mom felt the same way, and she left about 2 years ago. My girlfriend also had numerous issues with them and left after 1 consultation. I put 3 stars, as they did provide years of good service, but I need a place better organized. read more

Office experience was fair at first but that quickly went south , I went in 15 minutes prior to my appointment (as they ask ) time of 8:15 am , I checked in , registered on my phone, and waited. After about 20 minutes PAST my scheduled time, I informed staff that I would make a call while waiting outside, since it didnt seem I was getting called anytime soon. ( i mean you would think if you are early, and have the first appt of the morning, WHY they are still late is beyond me) but again, I stepped outside to make other medical appt calls to ensure I could get on with my day. While I was still on my call, someone came outside to get me, and I simply let them know I would be right in, as I was finishing my call, ( after all they did run behind in the first place) , I walked back in and sat down, and some rude assistant with long black hair , said "they've been waiting for you!" in a rude tone. I didnt say anything, immediately, and then told them "would you like me to come back, I can come another day" of course NOT they said, they would not want that as they wouldnt be able to bill for services not rendered. So I waited, at this point it was 45 minutes past my appointment time, and I patiently waited. It sad to see such poor customer service as they say one apple can spoil the whole bunch, because the dentist and hygiene staff were professional and polite, however without PROPER training of the front desk staff, I highly doubt people would come back as in my case, so I will sadly be looking for a new dentist in my area and take all 6 of my family members needs elsewhere. This place must be so busy, and clearly not in need of any business. I called to cancel all their appointments, the young gentleman who helped on the phone was the most courteous by far. so thank you kind sir for being a HUMAN with etiquette. Advice to business owners: train front desk staff on communicating delays, in professional tones, and by all means DONT schedule people for times if you will be grossly behind int he schedule, I was late to work, and this is enough for me not to return. read more

My experience has been mediocre at best. I saw Dr. Zhu initually on an emergency basis. 3 teeth removed. I was happy and Job well done. After that, it all has gone downhill. I am not sure it is Dr. Zhu but his staff lacks communication skills. How hard is it to get someone to explain a procedure? Ive spent thousands in addition to maxing out dental benefits. Instead of seeing a real dentist, I am treated by the dental assistants. The dental assistant sliced my gums forcing a temporary denture into my mouth. Blood, pain...no apologies, no acknowledgement accountability until I screamed at her to stop. It happened again and I cannot keep quiet about the inwxcusable traetment. If a patient tells you it hurts and you are a dental offuce that specializes in sleep and painfree dentistry...do something. I have no trust in this practice. read more

I would definitely recommend this practice, especially for those that have an extreme fear of the dentist or, have had a bad experience! I am not an easy patient, due to my fear - and have even been kicked out of a practice for failing to show up for scheduled appointments. I shared this with the staff at this practice and felt they took my concerns seriously! They were patient and gentle with me, while also being firm on how I needed to be more responsible with my oral hygiene. I have been visiting Pleasant Hill Dental for almost 8 years now. The reason I have been staying with them for so long is the quality of their services. The front staff is very friendly, and always greets me with a smile on every visit. The drive from my home to the practice is approximately 1 hour. I have been late a few times, but they have always been understanding. The back staff is also great - they're very skilled at taking my x-rays and assisting the doctor. They have a couple of dentists working. The only doctor I have seen is Dr. Zhu. I have seen many dentists in the past, and I can honestly say Dr. Zhu is extremely skilled while showing the empathy and compassion that patients appreciate. He explains the treatment and provides suggestions that is in the best interest of my oral health. His injections and treatment is pain free.. it's amazing that I do not feel the shot at all!! There is a reason I'm willing to do the hour commute to get to this practice. I would highly recommend Dr. Cheng Zhu and the Pleasant Hill Dental Team. read more

Better get a 2nd Opinion or you will get taken to the cleaners for ALL YOUR MONEY I went to Dr. Marjan in the hopes to find a new dentist, and found myself searching yet again. I found the staff to be friendly, the dental/xray technician to be superb, then waited to hear from the Dentist. As a 36 year old who has had consistent dental care all their life, I was appalled to hear I would need 17 fillings, a deep cleaning, and even a CROWN. To break this down, the overall dollar amount being $4,879.00 and my out of pocket cost would be $1,533.00. (I have GEHA dental insurance, comprehensive, and with no annual cap.) I didn't receive a cleaning from them, and honestly felt rushed to set up future appointments with them, to which I declined. I scheduled an appointment with to Dr. Philip Gruell (DDS) in Alameda for a secondary opinion, and wouldn't you know, NO CAVATIES, NO DEEP CLEANING, AND NO CROWN. I don't know what type of practice Pleasant Hill Dental is running, but it is certainly not with the patient's health or well being in mind. This practice is looking for your money, plain and simple. I've just heard that our beloved Pleasant Hill Dental RDH for 25 years, Kerri Brumbaugh, who has single-handedly carried this office through 3+ dentist and innumerable staff turnovers... has been FIRED WITHOUT CAUSE- on the brink of her retirement from her storied and awarded career- as a direct result of Dr. Zhu's (doctor of the moment) hiring of a new (yet again- new) office manager roughly 5 months ago, Heather is her name. I understand, as I see from other reviews here and there, she sounds like a real peach of a human- yuck. I've also heard from other patients that in that 5 months, the office manager Heather, has implemented unethical billing practices designed to squeeze every drop of $$$ out of the patients/insurance without maintaining Dental/ADA best practices in the best interest of the health of the patients. For example: forcing x-rays before they are medically necessary, exposing patients to unnecessary radiation, AND falsely educating the front office staff to tell patients who question the need that an x-ray is akin to a 15 min walk in the sun -wow- a literal bold-faced lie in order to collect insurance payments!!! Now that's scary- because most people these days will absolutely take them at their word- I mean, they are the professionals after all, right? This new office staff has clearly been directed to "find the money" by any means necessary. Being that I am Pleasant Hill Dental's longest standing patient- I have countless (and I mean that) friends and family at this practice who are solely there because of Kerri and Kerri alone- they would have left ages ago if it weren't for her and the consistent quality of care she provides- no one is a better hygienist, NO ONE. The fact that they HAVE to bother seeing the doctor-of-the-month is a hassle, more than anything... by the way: that is how dentists the world over ensure they can bill for an "exam"... by roughly jamming their fingers in our mouths for 30 seconds and claiming "looks good" after the RDH has done all the real work and actual preventative care. In the months since the new office manager, Heather, joined the practice, I've been told by dozens of these long time patients that the front office staff, at office manager Heather's direction, have knowingly lied to them to tell them that Kerri is unavailable for cleanings (some of these patients have never had their teeth cared for by anyone other than Kerri and this can cause great stress to some) and that they must schedule with some other RDH (some new staff, yet again). Now that Kerri has been wrongfully terminated, we now can see the clear plan laid in place to take patients off her schedule ahead of that. Kerri's proven care, ethics, and decades of trustworthiness are the exact reasons she has been eliminated- as she would NEVER allow the new office staff to make recommendations, or determinations, rather, in any way to the detriment of her beloved patients. Ethics are all we have at this point, as a "small business" of this type is generally given a pass/grey area on most laws that keep larger organizations in ethics check. You can absolutely bet that now that Kerri is not there to keep everyone honest, YOUR best interest/health/teeth will not be at heart, this practice only cares about your money. Thank god we have review sites, like Yelp, to spread the truth- otherwise bad practices like Pleasant Hill Dental would be able to go unchecked. There are so many other dental offices in the area that will provide better, more ethical, care. DM me if you'd like some recommendations. I got dentures put in over a year ago and was waiting for a call back from them to have them adjusted. When I called the staff told me I would have to pay to have them adjusted. When I asked her if they could wave the fee because the dentures never fit quite right she said ok. Then they never called me back to make the appointment. What dentist does that kind of thing? The dentures to this day still do not fit correctly and they never tried reaching out to me again. Very poor customer service after they told me don't worry we will fix them. But never did. Best dentist place in pleasant hill! I had a regular check up and cleaning here and had An amazing experience. The dental hygienist Kerri is very friendly, kind and extremely thorough with the cleaning. She spends her time (45 mins) to do a cleaning using a combination of ultrasonic tools and hand tools as well. Will definitely be returning here again for my future cleanings! In addition the customer service is very friendly and the place is extremely clean and pleasant to be in. read more

Do not go to this dentist! I read comments about the rudeness of Heather the office manager and had the same experience. I got an email from her saying that my son who has autism would need a root canal based on the x-rays they had received from my previous dentist. When I arrived they first said I had no appointment and then said that they hadn't received x-rays. I showed Heather an email she had sent confirming my appointment and stating that x-rays had been received. She said that she hadn't sent the email (but the email showed that it was from her). When it became clear that Dr. Zhu didn't understand autism, I became concerned. Then Heather said that I would have to pay $2000 before they would see my son. We have Delta Dental and have never had to pay that amount before service was provided. I left in tears. I need to find someone who can provide sedation services for my son's dental work but this place does not seem safe. After developing wisdom tooth pain and avoiding a check up for far too long, I decided to give PHD a shot and im so glad I did. The wait time was short and the staff did all they could to take the nerves out of the experience and make the process as calm as possible. I have been coming here for over 10 years and have noticed quite a few negative changes recently. I have never had any issue with the level of care from the dentists here as they have always been top notch. Luz at reception has always been fantastic as have others who have disappeared recently...I don't know the reasons but miss seeing the smiling familiar faces. I should have known things were going downhill when a lady I have never seen before was hovering over me while I was in the chair with a clip board in hand regarding billing.... Really?.. That was a first and very unprofessional. She never introduced herself, but I got the feeling she is in some position of authority. Now i hear the best Dental Hygienist I have ever had has been dismissed. Kerri is amazing and very good at what she does while making the teeth cleaning experience fun with her personality and quick wit. Wow! All I can say is what a mess of an experience.First I was informed that I would only get X-rays and an exam, no cleaning . I had to make another appointment for that . Red flag one! I told he Xray tech ( who honestly did a great job ) that I needed to excuse myself for a moment.When I came back, I found the Xray tech and the "dentist" talking about my X-rays without me. When I sat back in the chair, Dr.Marjan told me of all the dentil things I needed. I needed, according to her, eight fillings and five extractions and two crowns! I could not believe what I heard! Temporary crown came off 3 times while waiting for the permanent crown. I asked for an explanation of why the root canal failed never got an answer. I would give no star if I could. Since the end of March, I have had a tooth infection, and Dr. Zhu had no appointment for me. The office gave me one week of antibiotics and scheduled me to see Dr. Leung (eleven days later after I experienced extreme pain). I was disappointed. I went to a different dentist who took me for an emergency appointment right away. Since my tooth infection, nobody from Dr. Zhu's office has called or followed up on my tooth infection. Today, I called Dr.Zhu's office again to inquire about the upcoming appointments on 5/19/22 for cleaning and filling, which I had scheduled last year. The receptionist, Luz, told me that Dr. Zhu would be out of town on 5/19 due to a conference, and there is no appointment scheduled for cleaning on 5/19. I explained that the other receptionist Brandi scheduled the appointments for me, and I had confirmed the appointments with her again in January for the 5/19/22. However, Luz told me Brandi is at training. I told Luz that I was very disappointed with how they are operating their schedule and said to her that I would look for another more reliable dentist. Within a couple of minutes, Luz called me back at 3:59 pm and told me Dr. Zhu had an appointment at 4 pm for my filling today! I told her I could not be in her office within one minute. You could also tell how they enjoy working with one another, and it makes the atmosphere so much more enjoyable for a nervous patient! I'll likely update this as I go, but when I am particularly impressed by a business that exceeds all expectations, I do feel it should be shared with the community. Pleasant Hill dental is a great place to take care of your teeth and gums and that general area. They're friendly and skillful and they don't waste your time. I'm so done with other dentists that take so long that you have to pee twice while you're there and also have to call the dog sitter and explain why you're going to be late. Not only are they skillful and competent, but I have an aversion (and probably a disability) when it comes to dealing with billing, insurance and money in general, but they were so incredibly patient with me and walked me through everything and didn't make me feel stupid. ...The fact that moments later outside I tried to open the door to a truck that only looked like mine made me feel stupid but they didn't have anything to do with that. read more

I contacted this office last week due to severe pain on my lower tooth cause by a failed root canal performed at a different location. Dr. Zhu advised me get a specific treatment to subside the pain and treat the infection, so I went ahead and agreed to do so. I just received the treatment yesterday morning, and I could tell my tooth is feeling already a bit better. I am glad I found this office, since it seems like they are very knowledgeable at what they do, and it's also close to where I live. Great doctor, great staff member.
