First time at Plum Garden in Pittsford. My sister selected this place. She got married yesterday in a very small intimate ceremony. It was 15 of us. 5 children under 18 .. ranging 16-7 years of age. The experience we had, When I tell you the hostess female was rude! She constantly stood In view watching us. Never said a polite word? Not coming in or leaving? My sister had on her wedding dress for gods sake. Very short every time we asked a question! We had 2 cooks. Our cook was nice and entertaining however shrimp was over cooked, eggs n rice over cooked as well. Just was not an overall good experience. This "Hibachi" restaurant (actually Tepan Table) is a grand show of flying knives and food. Food was quite fresh and cooked perfectly, all they forgot was flavor. Tasteless sauces and sushi. It was a painful reminder as to how boring Asian food is on the East Coast. Several of the staff were quite pleasant. Others did not give a flip and did their thing in a surly fashion. My family living here loved it, so I am that weird California dude who is accustomed to authentic restaurants, not "McSushi". I stopped by for lunch with my sisters, mom, niece and nephew after spending a few hours at color me mine. We were super hungry and didn't want to go far so ended up here. I had a bento box which was pretty standard, and nothing to write home about. The tuna roll tasted a bit fishy so I was skeptical. The others mostly had bento boxes as well and thought they were okay. One sister had their sashimi and sushi lunch which I thought was well-priced for the amount of fish. The scallop and salmon sashimi stood out as being very good. Service was lackluster and everything seemed to take awhile. We had a 7:00 seating and we finally ate at 8:20 . Our waitress was horrible . Unfriendly, didn't care and never came back to clean off our area, so all of us at the table put our dirty dishes on a rolling cart . Our chef was ok , food was ok . We went to the ladies room which was dirty and discussing mess . Carpets in restaurant were also dirty. We'll never go back . Our favorite hibachi place in town. Our family ate a solid filling dinner last night, seated at the hibachi grilling table. Our chef was very good. The food is solid and very good. The salad is ok. The broth soup is decent. The fried rice is terrific. The vegetables are excellent. The grilled chunks of seafood and steaks are also good. Portions are huge. Overall a good experience. read more

my husband and i came here for hibachi, although we did change our minds and dined in instead, im honestly so glad we did. the waitress was the sweetest thing and was so nice and understanding that we didnt know some things on the menu or how to say them and she was very informal with her answers. one of the people making sushi also saw my husband and i trying to use chopsticks and he came over with his own chopsticks and taught us how to use them. he honestly was a very good teacher and although he wasnt very fluent in english, he was very determined to teach us and i loved that. the food was amazing. we tried things we havent tried before and honestly everything was so delicious. we will definitely be back. read more

I wanted to give Plum Garden a second chance. It's been a couple years since I made my first visit, and that wasn't too spectacular. Not quite sure where to go on a Sunday evening for mid-lunch, I gave it another go. We called in to make reservations at 4pm, but were told to 'go ahead and walk in.' We walked in, were greeted and sat down on the diner side. I have to note, the diner side is one of the best Japanese looking restaurants I've seen. I absolutely love the way how everything is laid out with the décor, and the overall atmosphere. If the diner side was a stand alone restaurant, I think it'd look wonderful. We placed in our appetizer (Gyoza) which did take a bit longer than expected to receive. Being only two couples in the restaurant (us included), we're not sure what was the hold up. When we finally received the gyoza, these were very tasty. Tender, tasted homemade but on the lukewarm side. I then saw a "special appetizer" on the small plastic stand on the table, and ordered that as well. It was baby octopus "Ee Taco." These small little guys were tasty and accompanied with a tasty sauce. Placing in a couple kitchen entrees alongside with a handful of nigiri and a roll, these came out in a reasonable time. For the entrees, we opted for the Nabeyaki Udon, and Unaju. The Nabeyaki Udon was tasty and I don't have any complaints. The only thing that threw me off, is there was a piece of chicken in the bowl which from my experience a Nabeyaki Udon doesn't contain chicken. Normally just shrimp tempura and vegetables (as it states on the menu). Good thing I wasn't a vegetarian (who can eat seafood). As for the Unaju, it was a nice piece of eel on top of rice in a box with a top. I have no complaints here, but nothing that blew my mind. I've had better Eel bowls elsewhere. As for the assortment of nigiri, I ordered tuna, mackerel, salmon, egg, octopus, squid, yellowtail, sweet shrimp, toro, scallop, and uni. These are why I drop a star. The tuna and salmon both tasted fishy. Color wise, looked fine, but taste wise was off. Same for the uni. Wasn't the freshest, but passible. The one disappointment that really struck me hard was the toro. Mind you, these are $5 per piece. The slices were extremely too thin, and literally not unified with the rice whatsoever. Seemed like they were just placed on top. Not only that, but again for $5 a piece, I expected them to be at least sliced decently. As you can see in one of my pictures, the piece wasn't sliced correctly and looked like one end was ripped off. There was a peculiar pinkish liquid left on the plate after picking up a piece of toro nigiri. Taste wise, these weren't bad. But I've had better. I also want to note the rice formed underneath the nigiri was too sporadic. From different lengths, and to different amounts. Onto the roll, I only have one complaint which is I wished it was wrapped tighter. But other than that, it was tasty and presented pretty standardly. Now we get to why I'm deducting yet another star. When we finally received our appetizer, I can over hear some conversation by the staff. It was between the sushi chef, and the wait staff. I'm not one to eavesdrop, but from what I had caught, a hibachi chef called off and now the sushi chef is called to take over and cook for a table. This set the sushi chef on a rampage. Cuss words here and there. We were sitting the furthest away from the sushi bar, but we heard everything. It was crystal clear the sushi chef wasn't happy. Besides the cussing, we then heard some utensils being thrown around, clanging in the kitchen and at the sushi bar. Regardless of the situation, we thought it was unprofessional to cuss around customers, let alone throw things around and throw a tantrum. This made us feel uncomfortable, especially since he was still working on our order. Flicking the order receipts off his sushi counter onto the customer seating counter below just set a bad vibe. This behavior left a bad taste in our mouths. Overall, I wanted to give this restaurant a second chance because I remembered how beautiful the interior was, and hope the rice wasn't mushy this second time around. None of the nigiri blew me away, the time we waited for our appetizer, and the behavior and attitude of the sushi chef are the main reasons I won't be returning to Plum Garden. read more

This was my first Hibachi experience so perhaps I have over-starred out of pure excitement. That being said, the food was good and everyone enjoyed themselves, and no one threw out their neck trying to catch a rice ball. So really, everything you could ever wish for in a hibachi dinner. The service was a little slow, but our chef was fantastic at lighting things on fire and throwing rice balls to make us forget about that. The food was delicious, even the soup and salad were nice. Unfortunately the "shrimp appetizer," included in the price of the meal, must have escaped their fiery fate, as they never made it to our plates. Lucky shrimp. Overall, it seems the experience is the main reason to come here, but the food was really enjoyable- hot, fresh, and flavorful! Came to this restaurant with a party of 8! I am expecting Plum Garden to be our new "go to place" for upcoming events!(Hibachi) Simply put, I ordered from the sushi menu and the hibachi menu! So overall I have to give it 4 stars! The service here is amazing compared to other places. Sushi: I order two pieces of salmon, one eel and one octopus and their specialty roll called Green Monkey(not 100% sure). The specialty roll, octopus and eel was amazing! Plum Garden lost one star on their salmon. When compared to the freshness of the octopus it was extremely lacking! Hibachi: Amazing shows done by the chief! I ordered the Hibachi steak and my temperature for my steak was medium and it comes with fried rice and associated vegetables. Couple of my friends orders the same but asked for medium rare but receive steaks that were cook completely. The rice was good but the steak lacked favor so remember to use the sauce that give on the side for an extra kick! I have been going to Plum Garden for over 25 years (my kids were raised on their sushi, and we knew a number of the staff like family), and we loved it. I seldom write reviews after one bad experience, but this was our second. The tempura and sushi were horrible. The tempura had thick coating unlike the light, crispy coatings they were known for, and the sushi looked like it was made by someone who had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Plum House? More like Bum House. Perhaps my standards for Rochester are too high, but this place has really slipped, or perhaps my tastes have been more refined than to be wowed by a hibachi grill. While some of dinner choices (we were a group of six) were pretty decent, overall the quality of food was at best above average. As one example, I tried one of their sushi assortments and found Wegmans' Tastings sushi to be at least 3 grades superior. Even the tempura we had was slightly limp. The sake menu consisted of a choice between hot and cold sake. I asked our waitress if they had any other options and she replied, somewhat jokingly, "there isn't a medium." Ha ha, this was actually probably the highlight of the night. Again, maybe I'm expecting too much, but with over 200 sakes in distribution in the U.S., you'd expect a Japanese restaurant to at least offer a handful of cold-filtered options?? Lastly, and this is where there really is no excuse, one of our party went to the ladies room and found it, in her words, "dirtier than a college dive bar." We're talking wet paper on the ground, urine, just really unkept. She went to the front desk to tell them about this and was met with, "Perhaps people should learn how to tidy up after themselves." Wait, what? Sorry folks, but not only are you selling yourself short on a Japanese restaurant experience here, you're also being victim to who knows what sort of health code violation. I'm really surprised at the 3.0 average rating for this joint. That's all I have to say about that. We went here tonight with my sister and brother in law, and as this was my wife's first hibachi experience, it was a treat. Our chef was very talented and entertaining. Everything was delicious, from the soup and salad through the meal, and I tried all the proteins, rice, and veggies. They even give you a couple tasty sauces that you don't need because the meat is seasoned really well. I highly recommend this place. read more

I don't think Ive ever left a bad review on Yelp but, here's my first! The last time I was here was a year ago and everything was great on the normal dining half. I went this past weekend to the hibachi half and it was the complete opposite! Our reservation was at 830, we arrived at 815 and got some drinks at the bar up front. We were finally seated at 915 which was already ridiculous. We spent 15 minutes chatting with the people at our table before everyone started to become aware and annoyed because a server hadn't come yet. I told the host and a serve came five minutes later only to rush us through the ordering process because we had been waiting... I already knew what I wanted so I didn't mind but, not everyone at our table was ready. 20 minutes later and no food had come yet so my date and I left. It was disappointing to say the very least. Two ratings : 1.5 out of 5 for dining room 4.5 out of 5 for hibachi I've come here three times, and to both sides, hibachi && dining. I'll write reviews on both. DINING ROOM (Non-hibachi) First trip - I can't rate the service for this first trip accurately since it was a family friend and obviously we were treated wonderfully, however I can say I didn't see anybody that appeared to be upset with their service, and the atmosphere was lovely. The meals - Rolls - We tried the Dragon Roll and Crispy Monroe Roll. The Monroe was 'alright', but the Dragon Roll was quite good, For my meal I ordered the Teriyaki Salmon. I can't tell you how perfectly it was cooked. It was amazing beyond belief. We paid and left without anything else noteworthy happening aside from talks of good ol' Hong Kong, and how old everyone is getting. TRIP 2 (Where the 2.5 rating truly comes from...) The second time coming here (to the dining side) it was FAR busier than the first. We kind of had to squeeze through the crowd in order to be seated. We met our waitress who rushed us to pick drinks before even introducing herself, and was clearly forcing a smile. Once we did we began looking over the menu. After careful debate we all knew what we wanted, but...where was our waitress? Since most of us ordered water, it shouldn't have taken almost 20 minutes to return, but it did... She put down the water, and almost walked off before we exclaimed we wanted to order. She (begrudgingly) took our order. I ordered the salmon again, to see if it was as good as the first time, and tried the Plum Garden Rolls this time. A long time later, in a galaxy far far away, we were brought several items at once, some of which were warm, that should have been hot, room temp that should have been cold, etc. The salads and soups were still good, although the soup seemed to have sat out for a bit before being brought to us. The rolls came out at the same time. It was very delicious. Then a bit later the meals came out. The salmon was just as good as the first time. Now, this might seem like an okay time...maybe a 3 or 4.... but...nope...Because as the meal went on, our drinks went down, and our waitress was nowhere to be found. We asked 2 waitresses to find her and neither of them returned, meaning we were all with empty drinks from the moment our food arived, and waiting for our check, for over a half an hour after we finished eating. We didn't complain, however, we simply paid, and left. While walking out, however, a man was audibly complaining and asking for a manager, so it seemed to be a common theme that night. HIBACHI SIDE -------- (Don't worry, not a horror story like the dining) We went for my 25th birthday here and decided to try their hibachi out, along with my almost 80 year old grandmother. Upon walking in we were sat at one of the grills. The wait wasn't very long before we were able to order drinks/appetizers. We skipped on appetizers and got our drinks. Then the chef arrived. I don't remember his name, but I remember he was VERY friendly. He kept the conversation flowing while performing his show. He wasn't the greatest I've ever seen, but he was still very good and with nice skills. During the Rice throwing segment, he made a kind gesture to get closer to my grandmother so it would be easier for her to catch some in her mouth so she could still enjoy the fun that hibachi has to offer. We really appreciated him for keeping her in on it and not just skipping over her or assuming she'd want no part. I had ordered the Filet & Lobster and I wasn't disappointed at all. I very rarely get to eat "High Quality" food due to money, but this was well worth every penny. The lobster was the tastiest I've ever had, and the filet was delicious as well. The vegetables were all perfectly grilled and all in all I'd give the meal a 9.5/10. At the end of the meal, they brought out this cute little sherbert cup with a candle in it. And I'm a fanboy of all things cute, so I was in love with it. Overall for the hibachi side we all loved it. And I highly recommend it. Overview: Pros: +Great food +Great location +Some good staff +Great rolls Cons: -A bit on the pricey side -Sometimes have very bad service -Busy days are hell days. Prepare to be ignored. Overall : I loved the dining experience my first time in it, and I'll go back a third to see if it changes my review. But the second dining experience simply killed it for me. I could not be more disgusted with our whole experience here. We went for my friend's birthday, we had a party of 10. We got there about 10 minutes early, and we ended up waiting 45 minutes when we had a reservation. 10 of us standing by the door, not even able to get a drink because the bar was so slow. I thought the food was good, but what happened next just ruined our whole night. My friend has a seafood allergy and had to have her food cooked separately. I acknowledge this was an accident but the poor waitress(who handled everything really well) forgot to put her food order in. By the end off the meal, we were all getting our checks and she did not get her food yet. They offered us 10% off her check, which was just her food alone since we had separate checks. That's about $3. We were insulted. Her birthday was ruined. So we thought this nightmare was over with...we were wrong. Our friend-ON HER BIRTHDAY-since we went the night before, got food poisoning. Watch your eyebrows and be prepared for some hibachi fun! This is my top choice in Rochester. I don't know what it is about filet mignon cooked on a flat top with Japanese seasonings, but it is out of this world here... And the only thing I've ever ordered in my countless visits. This was the spot my sister and I always picked for our birthday dinner as teenagers. Still to this day I find reasons to come here. It can be a lot of fun going as a twosome because you're seated with other groups to fit the 8 seats at the hibachi table. I have had some great convos during nights like that and gut wrenching laughter cheering for everyone during the rice ball catching contest. On the flipside, bringing a group of friends is an awesome way to spend the evening. If you're all over 21, your chef may decide to do long distance sake chugging with one of his mysterious squirt bottles. It's unreal! You're in for a wild time. Food is good, service is very disappointing. 1st problem was getting seated: we waited at least 45 mins when we were told on the phone just before arriving that it would be 20 mins. There were several groups that arrived after us & were seated more quickly -- we were a party of 4. I've done hibachi before & it's always looked like a cat-herding type of business to me what with the staff trying to place enough people at a table for a single chef but getting passed over was really unfair. 2nd problem was drinks: dinner orders were taken, salad & soup were served quite a bit after. Drinks came about 5 mins after our soup & salad -- should've been brought out first. 3rd problem was the wait for our chef -- about another 45 mins. Over 90 mins before our food was even cooked for us after we'd 1st arrived. 4th, the chef seemed bored & unprepared -- he had to leave at one point to get more chicken & wasn't nearly as entertaining as other hibachi chefs I've had. I had a choice between this and Sakura Home up the street for hibachi. I found myself ended up here primarily due to it being in Rochester longer. It was a Sunday night but the place was not overly crowded. I only had to wait for 10 minutes to get my spot at the hibachi table. In the meanwhile, I grab a martini at the bar. The drinks here were well priced, ie. they were cheap! Six dollars for a martini was worth a try. I waited for my table with the Asian Sun maritini. It was sweet yet aromatic and slightly strong. I was seated in a table with three other ppl. I thought to myself...GREAT...we all have to wait for the whole table to be filled. Surprisingly, that wasn't the plan. We were quickly taken our orders and the food started to come in. I got the seafood dinner which was a combo of shrimp, scallops, and lobster. I also ordered an Osaka for drink since it has barcardi 51 in it (along with peach schnapps and orange juice). The Osaka was mostly juice with a hint of peach schnapp and hardly any rum. Nonetheless, it kept me company while waiting for the chef to come, which didn't take that long either. Fire must had been the theme at this restaurant because every five minute you could feel the heat and intense brightness of the flames coming from the hibachi grill from your table or the surrounding ones. Flame is good... After a somewhat interesting show on the grill, my dinner was ready on my plate. I was a little disappointed with the lobster and the scallops. Although they tasted great, both were slightly overcooked. Fresh scallops should not be overcooked because they would taste just like old scallops. The sauces helped a great lot. Great place to go with friends/family, but also a good spot to bring new faces. The catching of rice balls, onion volcano, and a variety of other tricks turns your dinning experience into a mini culinary show. The steak and lobster or scallops are always superb -- but if your looking for the more traditional chicken and fried rice they have that too. You get a lot of food so come hungry, and enjoy :) read more

We took my granddaughter for her 8th birthday dinner because she absolutely loves their hibachi. It has always been it go to. Our server and cook were wonderful and the food was great as expected. However, the cook behind us we extremely boisterous, foul mouthed and inappropriate. He could see there was a child right there from where he was cooking while he discussed how liked his women with more weight so he could get a good hold their hips....... Great show if was and adult only atmosphere. During both of our services with his disgusting rants, I stepped away to inform the manager. She merely apologized and even stood in the doorway to experience some of his cursing and nastiness. She must have talked to him because he walked by as we were finishing up and he walked up to my daughter to say ," I don't give a *uck, I'm doing my job" with the 8 year old next to her. I was looking for a good Sushi bar in Rochester and this place is not it. I have ate Sushi, in Los Angeles, every other week for the last 10 years, so I know what good Sushi is. Be advised, when I eat sushi, I do not use soy sauce. I prefer to taste the chef's creation. So my first Hibachi in Rochester, I have only been to some in California and was really skeptical towards trying one in Rochester. A good, pleasing Hibachi is hard to find! But I guess I have found one! We were a party of 7 and didn't have to wait for other people to fill the table. Our waiter took orders shortly after we arrived. One problem was that while we were waiting for the chef to come and get started, they began cleaning the adjacent cooking area, smell of bleach was really bothersome. We were amused with his performance.The fried rice was so good I could just have it as a separate meal. The filet mignon was awesome just as my yelper friends had suggested. The one star I am taking away is mostly because of the attitude of the staff. They were just rushing and as a result I did not feel at ease, neither did the other people at our party. Do not go here on a holiday They are understaffed , the wait is long , the food is dissapointing and the portions skimpy .

My girlfriend and I went to Plum Garden after we moved back from Denver, CO. The restaurant seemed pretty dirty and not well managed. We took a seat at the sushi bar for what we thought would be quicker service. Not only did it take awhile for our sushi to be made, but the quality of the sushi was not very good and tasted very fishy. The rolls were on the smaller side and were much more expensive than we expected. Grew up in the area and have had several friends tell me they have seen several "restaurant friendly bugs" in the restaurant. Have tried several other sushi locations in the area and will most likely not be back at this one. read more
