I used to be in Rochester for school. I still remember going to Plum garden whenever I had a reason to celebrate. After about two decades, I finally had another chance to dine at Plum Garden. It was as pleasant as ever. It reminded me how much I missed this place. The food is delicious, the price is reasonable and the service is fantastic. During my visit I picked simple but delicious sio may appetizer, followed by some cut of sashimi and salmon bento. I couldn't be happier. After more than two decades, Plum Garden is more than just another restaurant. It's a Rochester institution. Fantastic! Keep up the good work! read more

My wife, daughter and I stopped here for dinner around 7pm on Labor Day to find eight hibachi tables in use (out of maybe 20 total). After a 15 minute wait, we were seated along with two other families, handed out menus and ordered drinks. They have the typical hibachi fare with prices that seem reasonable to a touch on the higher side. My wife and daughter both ordered the filet while I went a little lighter with shrimp. Our first course was an onion soup that was served hot (yeah) with plenty of little goodies in it but perhaps too salty for us. Before we finished our soup, the garden salad with ginger dressing arrived. I found the salad much to my liking and polished it off quickly. Our dressed in all our black chef rolled up with his cart of food to start the show. Well he really only did the bare minimum in terms of show but prepared everything quite well. If we were first time hibachi diners, the lack of show would have been disappointing but we have seen many and we're happy to be eating delicious food. My shrimp was prepared well and when dunked in either of the provided sauces was quite tasty. I ended up with a portion of twenty shrimp which seemed generous to me and also filling. The ladies' filets were cooked to their preferred medium rare and both loved it. We would return again but hopefully get a different chef who cooks just as well as ours did but adds in some more entertainment. read more

It's been years since I've been here and I am pleased to see that it's been remodeled with new decor. The bathroom is a big improvement from their old stalls and the stone walls add a nice touch. Next step would be to get new carpet or fully go with hardwood floors because there's still a stench soaked in the carpet. We had the sushi lunch which came with six nigiri pieces of tuna, white fish, red snapper, salmon, crab, and shrimp. It also comes with a California or tuna roll, but we substituted for the spicy tuna roll at an additional cost. They didn't skimp on the pieces of fish like some other Japanese restaurants do, but the fish didn't knock me off my chair either. They have limited lunch selections and few specials. Also, they didn't have white tuna, one of the best melt-in-your-mouth fish. Service was okay during our lunch hour. Our waitress was attentive at the beginning, but we had to ask another waitress to get our check. The table next to us had to ask for their waitress just to place their order. I think PG is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in ROC. Nowadays, there seems to be a surplus of them. I think they are still one of the best when it comes to their hibachi shows and tricks. read more

Udon thick white wheat-flour noodles in hot soup broth was ok. Man-hat-tan roll tuna, cucumber, jalapeno w spicy sauce, tobiko outside was ehhh, not a fan of seed intact jalapenos. Worst sushi rolls I've ever had. My go to rolls of spicy salmon and spicy tuna were beyond bad. Why? So many problems... Problem #1: Their customer service is unfriendly and unclear. Problem #2: I called in for a lunch special and they said ok over the phone but when I got there they informed me there wasn't a lunch special and it was $22 for 3 rolls. Why didn't they just say that over the phone? Scammers! I was disappointed but still willing to pay since I really wanted to try their rolls. Problem #3: However when I opened up the container, these rolls looked more like huge futomaki rolls instead of the usual bite size mouthfuls. Problem #4: They were extremely skimpy on the fish and added in sprouts as a filler and overfilled the rolls with lots and lots of rice. Could barely see or taste the fish or any spice at all. Problem #5: The spicy tuna roll was white instead of the usual raw red tuna. Something was definitely off here. I feel like I wasted my money getting food here and basically paid $22 for cooked white rice. I don't mind paying for expensive sushi if it is good however this was not the case. read more

This place is wonderful. It was always good. But a few years ago it was bought by new owners and they upped the quality of the food. It's gone from good to great. The sushi sashimi combo is amazing. I recommend substituting the Manhattan roll for the California roll. They give a lot of food for a reasonable price. Not to be overlooked is the staff. If I could give zero stars I would. This restaurant is truly declining. We had an 8pm reservation but didn't get sat until 8:40pm. Waited at the bar for the bartender to make drinks for almost 10 minutes. Service is poor. No apologies for the wait. No interactions what so ever. We didn't get food until almost 10pm. Had to chase down the server for refills or more drinks. Staff was extremely rude and looked absolutely miserable. Hibachi chefs was the only one who was happy. Another five star experience at Plum Garden. Went again for Doug's birthday - a party of six, and everybody enjoyed themselves!! Joseph was hands down the best Hibachi Chef experience we have had and we will try to request him when we come back. Only thing - wish they would work on the decor a little more. The water feature in the waiting area is grimy and the seats in the waiting area have duct tape on them. I'm not a fan of the dishes, either...but I'm just being picky. I had an odd experience at Plum Garden. There were some good things that went along with the bad. Pros: The food is undeniably good. I ordered the filet mignon and scallop hibachi and everything was fresh and seasoned to perfection. The chef was also very friendly and entertaining. I ordered a drink called the Yokohama and I would've drank 2 more had I been given the time. This is where the cons come to light. Cons: The waitress was always in a hurry. As soon as we sat down she somehow expected us to know exactly what we wanted to order. As soon as the chef was done cooking, she handed us to-go containers. I've never experienced anything like this. She had zero patience and there was no excuse for it. There were plenty of open hibachi stations and no one waiting to be seated. Plum Garden is not a cheap place to eat, so I expect a great experience. Customers should never feel rushed. When defining a good dining experience, customers look at the quality of food and service. Okay. So we want to eat at the bar and we understand it is Saturday night but it is an empty bar, we haven't been greeted. And when I finally make it known we were waiting for someone to take a drink order, we get our drinks. Great. Now we want to order an appetizer and an entree but didn't see it necessary to take up a table since there was a 2 hour wait apparently. So, we ask for a menu and the manager says, we've cleared out a table for you to sit. And we only wanted 1 app and 1 entree so to take a servers table from her is unnecessary and kind of mean. We'd rather tip a bartender on the small amount of food we've eaten because a bartender has a lot less going on compared to a server (who we understand is busy) So I say, maybe we can just order takeout. But she put down this vibe that she didn't want us being there. And honestly, if it didn't take over 5 mins of nobody even saying hello, I might have stayed. But fuck 'em. Treat all customers, (bar hoppers/app eaters) the same as every other customer. It was rude. We wanted to spend money for food at a bar but that apparently isn't a thing at Plum. The steak was seriously one of the best I ever had. So much flavor and perfectly cooked. I had the salmon combination plate. Again, the flavor was out of this world. It was similar to teriyaki. When the sushi bug bit me on a Sunday afternoon, all my usual sushi spots were closed. However, Plum Garden rose to the occasion. We were seated right away but were informed that the sushi chef was running behind. It took about 30-40 minutes to get our order. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls (Happy Dragon, Man-Hat-Tan, Plum Garden) and they were all pretty good. I wouldn't say the fish here is remarkably fresh but it was average for Rochester. The prices were more reasonable than I expected them to be. Overall, it definitely satisfied my sushi craving and I will come back if my usual sushi spots are closed. read more

Plum Garden died today at his home in Pittsford Plaza. He was predeceased by his cousin Shanghai. He leaves behind Japanese Restaurants that can cook fried rice!!!! We've been going to Plum Garden for 5 years. It was the "go-to" spot for our kids celebrations or special occasions. The last two times we've gone there's been some hiccups (roof leaking,starting to look dirty). But the food was still good and how can you go wrong when it's cooked in front of you! Well we found out it can go wrong and it did!!! Six year old chooses Plum Garden for a celebratory lunch. Her Dad and I agreed to take her because she enjoys the "show". We are seated with another couple and their daughter. It's empty (2:30 on a Sunday) however it's very dirty!!!! The lady at our table sends back 3 plates because they were unclean. The grill that they cook on had dried food and crumbs all over it( There suppose to clean the grill both before and after it's used). The soup tasted like tap water, the cook barely seasoned or cooked the rice, the rice was "sticky"!!!! Gross I had one taste of it and almost barfed. When my husband asked if we could have "new" rice the waitress wasn't trying to hear it. We left and the the people at our table followed!!! Awful, inattentive, and extremely slow customer service. It took an hour to be seated despite having reservations, and another hour for the food to be served. During that time the waiter visited only twice, and when the hibachi chef finally arrived, he was very, very, very drunk. He (accidentally?) tossed and bounced a steel spatula off the plate of my seated 8-year-old niece and almost hit her in the face. He kept trying to confirm which dinners we ordered, ignored what we said and pushed steak on to the vegetarians' plates anyway. Over and over. The appetizers arrived after the meal -- and only when we asked the hibachi chef, who after three promptings flagged down a waiter. He created a fountain with a squeeze bottle of sake and attempted to shoot it into the mouths of my dinner party. For the most part, he missed and just got sake all over their shirts. I declined. The atmosphere at Plum Garden is more remniscent of a frat party where dinner is served in Red Solo plastic cups, rather than hibachi. We left two-and-a-half hours after arriving. Two hours and twenty minutes of that was waiting around, and ten minutes of trying to get boxes for the food so we could leave. I struggle to leave 5 stars on Plum Garden. It has gone downhill over the years. We went in February. The waiting area was PACKED with barely any standing room. The thrill is the show, definitely not the food or the service. I was disappointed that plates were not cleared out the way, when we finished the appetizers, soup and salads. It was hard to navigate the meal for myself much less with two kids to have enough table space for us to eat comfortably. Our chef was good, nothing extraordinary and with lots of other hibachi and sushi options in Rochester, Plum Garden will not be an option for us to return. read more
