My family has been going to Plum Garden for over 25 years and, sad to say, the restaurant has declined a bit. The food is still ok, but the interior and cleanliness need to improve. The price is fairly high so expectations are also high, but Plum Garden is having trouble meeting them. Our chef checked all the boxes: juggle the cooking utensils, toss the rice lumps into everyone's mouths, onion volcano, etc. But he lacked humor and enthusiasm, which are a big part of the show. The portion of vegetables seemed small and the dipping sauces tasted blander than usual. It's time for Plum Garden to step up its game, spruce up its menu, and reinvigorate the hibachi chefs. Visited Plum Garden for takeout sushi a couple weeks ago and this past weekend for a sit down sushi dinner before going out for a movie. The service in both cases was decent and the sushi came out without too much wait. The sushi itself is nothing to write home about and somewhere around average. The spicy tuna has no noticeable tuna pieces but doesn't have an overly mayo-y taste. The eel roll was decent (most roast eel with sauce has a very similar taste). We tried 2 different offerings for us: conch and uni (sea urchin roe). The conch reminded of a chewy clam that left us saying that it was fine but wouldn't be driven to order it again. The uni seemed to be a bit on the runny side and tasted of an aquarium. I don't know if it was a good version or bad since I hadn't had it before. I would try it again but probably not from Plum Garden. Our fried squid appetizer wasn't crunchy at all and was a bit on the greasy side considering how light the batter was. Mmmm! I love their sushi but beware - under the sushi they put wasabi in between the fish and rice. Yeow! Depending on when I have gone I have gotten either great service or lousy service. The best service I got was on my fiance's birthday when the bartender actually took care of us (it was packed that night) and gave us free drinks and free desserts! First, let me start with the positives. The atmosphere was nice. We received a good portion of fried rice with our meals and......that's about it. I love Japanese cuisine and I especially love the entertainment that the usual Hibachi meal offers. However, the actual flavor of the meal was pretty bland. Also, when my friend and I finished our meal, it took 20 minutes for the waiter to take our checks. And to top it off, after we paid, another waiter proceeded to stand at the end of our table staring at us, basically signaling us to move from the table since we had finished our meal. I was so shocked that happened that I laughed it off. Granted, it was a busy Friday night that we dined in but really? I've never been signaled to leave the table after I meal. The hibachi and sushi are good, maybe even great. Having lived outside the Pittsford area, though, makes Plum Garden a little more down-to-earth than one would imagine from its continuously-packed state. Having lived in NYC, the hibachi is good and fairly priced (comparatively), but the sushi is undersized and overpriced. I guess thats what you get when you compare Rochester sushi to NYC sushi. To give you an idea how much I love Plum Garden for their sushi, consider this: I actually made my sister bring Plum Garden takeout to the DELIVERY ROOM after I had my son. That was a long nine months without sushi, and I wasn't going to wait another minute if I didn't have to! Like other reviewers have mentioned, it is a little pricey, but certainly not out of line for a sushi restaurant in general. The atmosphere is clean and fairly modern, and the servers are always quite friendly. Aside from sushi and sashimi, there is a broad range of appetizers, combination plates, and cooked entrees. I tend to stick with sushi and maki rolls, but everything I've had has been good. There is a hibachi area on the other side of the restaurant, but I haven't gone for that - I imagine it would be a pretty good place to get tipsy with coworkers on a friday after work, or have a birthday party, but I generally prefer my meals to not be airborne. read more

I went with a huge group of friends and we needed two chefs to serve us. One side of the table got the more experienced chef, my side got what appeared to be a rookie. The experienced chef on the other side put on quite an amazing show. I'd give the rookie on our side a C+ for effort (come on every one needs a learning curve). Our rookie over salted the steak but the rest of the food was fantastic (I tried the meat from the other side of the table, it wasn't over salted and tasted just as good as everything else). I almost took off a star because of the over salting, but considering it was a fluke I figure they deserve 5 stars. They have the best fried rice I've ever eaten. The meal also came with onion soup, I'm normally not a fan of onion soup but I'd happily order Plum Garden's again! For $20 I had a fairly high quality meal for two days and entertainment at the grill. I plan on going there again for special occasions. read more

After a terrible experience at a competitor my party of 18 was seated after only 1:30 wait with no reservation. The food was wonderful and the service impeccable, and the chef was amazing! My wife had a a great time and it really was a perfect topper to the week I had planed out for us. I had the Hibachi Steak (well done) and though it was fully cooked it was still soft and juicy. I have been to several hibachi style restaurants and this one was remarkable! Service was polite and efficient with excellent timing thanks to an attentive server. Our Chef was not only funny and talented but extremely observant and very good with children. The miso soup was hot and tasty, the salad was plentiful and with a nice variety of veggies. The fried rice was hearty with interesting flair such as sesame seeds. The portions were plentiful and the meat and seafood was a choice cut. Only possible criticism was that the stir fry veggies were a bit too all dente. Friend had sushi and was amazed at the size and enjoyed it very much. The chef even made. Suggestions about the green seaweed garnish to eat w ginger! It was a busy Sat night reservations wise. Quick turnover but not rushed. Good beer selection. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place and would come back here in a heartbeat. Yea, its great! Food was fresh and flavorful and the service was also very good. We had some seaweed salad which was pretty standard, miso soups, also standard, house salad with ginger dressing, no surprises there either. All good. We had two different rolls, one was the dragon and the other ones name escapes me. They were both very tasty, fresh, and good size. After all that we were pretty full and satisfied. The interior of the restaurant is clean and well decorated, sushi service on one side and the other is for their hibachi menu and service. The only reason I did not give The Plum Garden 5 stars is due to pricing. It is a little more expensive than other venues of the similar variety around town. The plum garden is one of those places that you want to go too as bad as you wanted to go to Chucky Chees when you were a kid. They cook in front of you, make you catch rice in your mouth out of the air, the sushi ain't bad, (almost as good as places downtown), the scallops are amazing. A fairly large and pleasantly decorated Japanese restaurant in a suburban strip mall that serves both Hibachi and sushi. Ah, but this isn't just any suburban strip mall. It's Pittsford. Oooh. Hibachi here is closer to 4 stars. Efficient, interesting, entertaining. Buttery and eggy fried rice that keeps getting better with each bite. Tender and well-seasoned meat. Sushi here is more standard and traditional, a 3. It's quite consistent overall and usually fresh. The service is hit-or-miss. I've worked in a Pittsford restaurant before though, so I know the, um, *challenges* of some of the customers... ;) I'd choose Plum Garden over most sushi restaurants in Rochester if you're just looking for some standard rolls, sashimi or nigiri in a traditional setting. If you're willing to attempt more exotic combinations, higher prices and more upscale environs, check out either Nikko or Next Door. read more

A really nice place for sushi! Went for lunch never having been there before and it was really good!! The side salad is $1.50 and you get a nice sized salad with that yummy ginger salad dressing commonly found in Japanese restaurants. My table ordered the Miami Beach roll, the Spicy Monroe roll, and the Red Sun roll. I think the Miami Beach one was my favorite but the spicy sauce on the Red Sun roll was really delicious as well. The Spicy Monroe was good but nothing special, good for the beginning sushi fan who isn't quite ready for the raw stuff :-). All of the sushi was fresh flavorful. Friendly service, decent prices. Plum Garden has been around for a very long time now. It hasn't changed a bit. I think that's why I can't give them 4 stars. They never change it up. The sushi is the same old stuff they've always made. Luckily I'm more of a sashimi guy but a nice creative roll would be nice now and then. I've dined at the hibachi's a few times and they stay the same as well. Totally average food. This country needs to stop this craziness with the hibachi and switch it up a little. Solid, excellent, hibachi. Ordered the filet... had it cooked just like I wanted it- med rare. Appetizers are the standard hibachi fare.. there was nothing special... which put it at 4 stars. I have high standards when it comes to Hibachi, (Benihana's is a 1 in my book). Portions were generous, you get a huge bowl of rice and a decent amount of meat and veggies. Definitely will fill you up. Seating was a bit tight, but that's almost normal. Made reservations for 3... I'm assuming Hibachi's always easier with reservations since they want the tables some what full... great chef, entertaining as usual. read more

One of my favorite hibachi experiences! The restaurant itself was beautiful it had wall that was like an enclosed waterfall. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. Our chef was very entertaining doing the standard onion Fire volcano and knife tricks. He threw shrimp into everyone's mouths at the table super fun! We didn't say anything we thought someone would notice we were the only one sitting at the bar and were waiting patiently for service but no one came. Finally had to get up and ask the hostess if there was any service at the bar and she said yes and continue doing what she was doing for another 5 minutes or so. Worst experience ever!! The food was not fresh and the service was soooo slow and terrible. The tofu in the miso soup was sour and stale and the cucumber in the rolls was spoiled and bad. This is probably the best Japanese restaurant in Rochester. They have decent sushi (typical rolls and sashimi/nigiri) and other entrees that are not bad at all. Most customers seem to love their Hibachi grill side of dining. Basically, chefs do tricks here and there and cook up the steak/chicken/shrimp along with fried rice and veggies in front of the customers. Most customers are entertained by that, and I hear that fresh grilled meat is pretty good. Me and my girlfriend took a gander at Plum Garden after buy a coupon off from groupon. I would have to say on first impressions it was very nice and bright when first walking in. We went during lunch time, it didn't seem really busy and we were seated right away. The hibachi chefs put on a good show and the food was very good. The prices for hibachi seem competitive for the area and it seems that you get quite a bit of food for your money which is a plus. This once was our go-to Hibachi place. Great food, clean, good service. However, tonight it seemed like a different place. The food was OK, but the service was horrible. We didn't have a reservation...the place was nearly empty at 6pm on a Sunday. They said it would be a 15 min. wait...it was 25...no big deal. From the time we were seated it took nearly two hours before the check arrived. The kid's dinner includes ice cream but never came. We were so ready to leave, we didn't even bring it up with our waitress. Our table sat for 20 minutes waiting for the check. In fact, we had to ask a bus boy to get our waitress...and that took 10 minutes! The attitude of the entire staff was just bad...almost lazy. There was just no sense of urgency. We came to this restaurant for a big celebration, since the place we had initially planned to go to was booked solid. That being said, we were pleasantly surprised with the hibachi here. The waitresses were polite when dealing with our large group, and constantly checked back on us to see if we needed refills, takeout boxes, or checks. The food itself is also undeniably good. Of course, being a hibachi grill, the dishes were cooked in front of us. Everyone enjoyed the onion ring volcanos and the utensil juggling. The chefs were very light hearted and funny, chatting with us as we waited for our food. They offered seconds to anyone who wanted extra helpings of rice. At some point, they began tossing small rice balls for us to catch in or mouths, which certainly kept us awake. According to my older friends at the celebration, the alcohol is very good as well. I didn't have any myself, being underaged and all, but the drinks certainly smelled good-the person next to me had something that smelled of sugar and peaches. I think it was a pink color. First time at this place, ordered the spider roll, assorted tempura and their tempura sushi roll bento box. I didn't expect much coming from Vegas as a sushi chef myself I would give them an overall 5/10. Sushi rice for the rolls are tasteless, can't taste the vinegar at all. The way the rolls were rolled up, seemed like the sushi chef needs to let the rice rest more instead of selling an item i would serve since they're falling apart and not rolled nice and tight. Let the natural taste of the softshell crab be the star instead of tasting mostly lettuce in the spider roll. Eel sauce that came with it needs work. Again, tasteless and bland. Salad dressing for the side salad was garbage. Need to emulsify that dressing so wouldn't be all over the place and broken. Tempura sauce, bland. I didn't even see or taste and oroshi in it. Daikon oroshi, dashi, soy, mirin and maybe sugar. Tuna roll looks as if it has been pre rolled because that was rolled very nice by someone who knows how to. I enjoyed the miso soup though other than that, could use lots of work or perhaps I haven't tried the rest of the items in the menu. I would come back and eat there again though.
